I've got a little brother that's 15 about 6'2 and 62kg (132 pounds real lanky) He can nearly touch the rim he's about 1-3cm off and he was wondering if he worked out hard enough on the jumpsoles from JUMPUSA he got for Christmas if he'll be able to dunk. I've told him the he'll probably be able to but he wanted me to ask the experts (you fellas).
Thanks alot

well he's obviously really skinny, I think working to strengthen his calves and stuff would help. Like if he did High Jump and Long Jump and all that stuff in track his vertical would definitley go up.
I've never done that stuff myself (jumpsoles that is), but I've heard that they do work, not always though.

Your brother must jump 1 inch. I just turned 15 about a month ago. I'm like 5'10" (140 lbs) and I can easily touch the rim. I first touched rim when I was 14. I almost dunked the other day. Serious

Every time there's a thread about jumping, everybody feels the need to go like "O I'm like 5'2'' but I can touch the rim no problem."
Sun Dec 24, 2006 12:02 pm
Yeah it happens every single time. If there was an NLSC get together there wouldn't be one single ugly or fat person and everyone would be candidates for the NBA dunk comp.

I'm serious about me. O well, I don't need you believing me. People around my school have seen me touch the rim so that's good enough for me.

So you feel the need to put down someone's brother and gloat about the fact that you can ALMOST dunk?
Sun Dec 24, 2006 3:21 pm
Exactly, the thread's purpose is not to let people know if you can dunk...it's to help someone else out. I know it might be a difficult concept for some...

Maybe the 8 foot rim
Anyways, he should practice high jumping, maybe it wont help him with his height anymore, but it will help him improve, jump also train his calves, better push-off.

I'm 6ft, and can't dunk, or even come close to touching the rim. No worries though, I've seen myself dunk in some pretty surreal dreams, so that's all that really matters to me.

jump soles can ruin the ankles.

Increasing vertical jump
One of the most frequently asked questions in the athletic world is "How can I increase my vertical jump?". A higher vertical jump has obvious advantages in many aspects of sports such as basketball and volleyball.
There are many different ways to increase one's vertical jump, with much controversy on which method is the most effective. A more scientific breakdown of vertical jump is required to comprehend methods to improve performance.
Vertical jump is a measure of how far off the ground one can elevate one's own bodyweight. To do this, an individual must produce power.
In physics, power is computed using the following formula :
Power = Work / Time
In relation to sports, Power is better described as:
Power = StrengthxSpeed or Power = Force / Time
Therefore, to increase power (and consequently vertical jump), and athlete must train to improve both strength and speed.
Strength can be increased using traditional strength training, with emphasis on the posterior chain (or "p-chain") which consists of the hamstrings, calves, lower back and glute muscles. Studies have shown that the majority of force generated during a vertical jump is generated by these muscles, and most importantly the quadriceps which are not part of the p-chain but rather the anterior chain.
Therefore, arguably the two most important max strength lifts for improving vertical jump are the full back squat and the deadlift.
Speed in the vertical jump is a measure of how fast one can exert force. In the vertical jump, there is a very short time period in which force can be generated to use in a vertical jump(0.2s). Hence, it is very important for an athlete to be able to exert the maximum force possible in the shortest amount of time. Speed training reduces the "time" portion of the power equation, resulting in more overall power.
Speed training consist of two elements: Plyometric exercises (exercises which allow you to absorb the more energy during the countermovement, or eccentric contraction, of an explosive movement such as jumping or sprinting) and explosive training such as jump squats or power cleans.
An important fact to note is that plyometric and explosive exercises are not necessary until an athlete has built up a fairly strong strength base (commonly set at between 1.5 and 2 times an athlete's bodyweight in the full squat and deadlift exercises). The reason for this is that even if the time portion of the power equation is reduced significantlly, the overall power will still be a lower number if the force portion of the equation is neglected.

Well your brother needs to understand, that for him to increase his vertical with jumpsoles,he needs to work really hard on strenght and power. Also he should work in the gym a little to gain muscle in his legs, which will help him .
Just wearing jumpsoles doesn't mean you'll increase your vert, you need to train with them
Sun Dec 24, 2006 10:22 pm
^Thats exactly right. You can increase your leaping ability and speed with jumpsoles, but you need to train correctly.
Get him Air Alert 3. It is a jumping explosiveness workout program, and it is one of the best, if not the best. There are other vertical leap programs, also, I suggest googling "vertical leap program" or similar. Also, since your bro is so skinny, I suggest he try to put on some muscle.
Sun Dec 24, 2006 10:43 pm
yeah... that's why jordan farmar doesnt look like he's got a 42 inch vertical cause he doesnt have much speed... unlike players like wade,i've read he only has 38 inch vertical but coz of his speed,he must be jumping 38 inches all the time...

If he's skinny and quite weak, I wouldn't suggest AA3, because there is an exercise in there that can really fuck your knees if your legs aren't strong enough. I would go with Air Alert II.

Air Alert is cool. I have used it for a little while. Also, walking around with ankle weights might help.
Mon Dec 25, 2006 3:13 am
I did Air Alert II.....got till week 9 before an ankle injury. It helped me tremendously (hand over ring). However, it is a demanding excercise and you can't cut corners.
It's also an excercise you need to do in the off-season, when i did it i had bball full on all year round.
Mon Dec 25, 2006 8:22 am
Damn all of you who can jump high. I am only 5'9" and 125lbs (kinda skinny) and my standing vert is only 18"
Mon Dec 25, 2006 11:30 am
I did the Air Alert III jumping program and I wouldn't suggest it to anyone, even people with a strong body... I have strong legs, I did the program, it fucked up my knees. I don't suggest anybody to do that thing.
I didn't try Air Alert II but if it doesn't have that Squat Hops excercise I think it's okay.
Anyways, your brother should gain some weight and power if he wants to do any sort of sport: He's almost 190 cm and only 62 kg? Hell I'm 10 cm shorter than him and weight like 20 kg more lol.
Mon Dec 25, 2006 11:51 am
How old were you when you did it though? I wouldn't do AA III until I was at least 16.
Mon Dec 25, 2006 11:55 am
How about the Vertical Jump Bible? I heard that one was good also.
I have been reading up on Air Alert 3 and alot of people have mentioned that it has been messing up their knees.
Ever hear of the one that guarantees to "double your vertical leap"? Sounds like bs to me.

I'm 5'7" and my vert is 21". I'm even heavier than you.
You're my bitch.

Wouldnt advise the ankle weights...they can fuck up your joints pretty easy. But i agree with what everyone else has been saying: find a workout plan, work on it, and your brother if dedicated enough will get the dunk. The shoes cant help if you dont have the aptitude yet...

I did it last year so I was fourteen... I don't think that matters a lot though. It depends on how strong your body is, not how old you are

I think Air Alert is a better program, not only you jump higher but you get bulkier too.
*Also can harm your knees
