Whew. I'm caught up now, this is really good. (Y)

Thanks for the shoutout. I still think this should go in HC at least as a story if not the whole dynasty.

And I'm going to see them in Toronto!

The league best centers all had a terrible game, Amare with 6 points, Shaq with 5 points and he took just 2 shots! Yao with 8 points. Other the other hand, Kobe is still the man. (Y) Go Lakers. (Y)

March Recap

Playoff Race 2006

Minnesota had a quiet March with only two games. It took a while to reacquaint themselves after the shock sacking of Kevin McHale as Will Sit stayed in his GM position and Mark Moore was introduced as the Wolves’ new head coach. The Wolves, despite being eliminated from the playoffs already, put up a fight against the Miami Heat and helped drop the Heat from the top of their division. The impressive win breathed a sense of life back into the fallen franchise as Sit and Co. try to prepare the team for a better campaign next season.

In Minnesota’s Division, the young Trailblazers continue their roll towards a playoff appearance on the back of a three game winning streak along with Denver’s sudden and on-going meltdown as they sit on a three game losing streak. Their hot start became nothing after that third loss and need to pull off a string of wins to get ahead of Portland for sure.

In the Pacific Division, Amare and the Phoenix Suns look like they will are out of contention for a postseason place. Sacramento on the other hand, is still in with a slight chance. Losing 4 games for the month was good enough for Pheonix to drop out of the playoff picture while Sacramento will need to win all of their games or most of them to stay in it. The Lakers stay on top of the Pacific Division as they extended their win streak to 12 games. Golden State also is looking good for a seeding in the playoffs.

Houston looks destined for the number 1 seed in the Western Conference as Dallas and San Antonio are battling below their Texas rival for a spot in the playoffs. Provided both the Spurs and Mavs win the rest of their games, they will both get a seeding in the middle of the pack. Memphis is still keeping their dream alive with a 3 game winning streak. However, it might be a little too late for Pau’s guys.

Despite a 3 game winning streak, Boston looks doomed for elimination. Lucky for teams such as the Knicks and Sixers, the East is so weak that no one has been statistically eliminated yet but count on those two to be out of the race for a postseason spot. The Nets again lead the Atlantic Division while Toronto is hanging on for dear life. If they win games in April, they may make it. If they don’t, they will be out. No matter what happens though, the only team sure to make the playoffs from the Atlantic is New Jersey as they are surely to be Division leaders.

Meanwhile in the Central Division though, four of its five teams have clinched berths with the Cavs leading the way. It will be interesting to see whether the Pistons or the Bulls can snatch that potential number 1 seed. And the records of the rest do matter. We can assume that the second, third and fourth place teams in the Central Divison will lock up seeds 4 through to 6. This means that the second and third best teams from the Central will probably play against each other in the playoffs. It’s probably better to be the number 6 seed so that you may play an easier team in the first round. In this case, if the playoffs began today, we’re very sure that Indiana would rather play the Atlanta Hawks rather than Detroit. It will be interesting to see if Indiana will try to climb the rest of the table or lose a few to guarantee a number 6 seed against the top team from the lowly Southeast Division.

The Southeast Division is woeful. Miami are playing at quarter capacity as the Hawks overtook the Heat in the standings. Orlando is also hanging onto dear life as the only team sure to get through is going to be the winner of this division. The race for the playoffs is going to be down to Miami, Atlanta and Orlando as one of them will want that top spot and a potential number 3 seeding. Anything else is going to be unpredictable. With Toronto having a similar record to the three aforementioned teams and only two lower seedlings up for grabs, there’s going to be a one disappointed franchises next month.

Players of the Month

Dirk Nowtizki led his Mavs to a 6-2 record for the month and helped the Mavs overtake the Spurs that will help them have a great chance of grabbing a higher playoff spot and possibly home court advantage to begin the postseason. The German Star averaged 28 ppg and 11 rpg to lead his Mavs team.

Allen Iverson’s 76ers may be out of playoff contention after a 3-3 March but the veteran put up 28 ppg, 7 apg and 5 repg and looks like he is making a bid to stay with his Philadelphia team next season.

Rookie Derron Williams scored a career high 40 points this month and despite the Jazz falling out of the playoff race, the rookie is fast proving why the Jazz drafted him last Summer. Next season should be very interesting for Utah. Joey Graham is helping the Raptors stay in the race for a playoff berth. His 14 ppg and 8 rpg and energy certainly makes the task a lot easier for teammate Chris Bosh as Toronto is trying to make the playoffs again.

Dajuan Wagner Is Back...

Dajuan's comeback is all about intestinal fortitude
By DICK JERARDI
jerardd@phillynews.com

DAJUAN WAGNER was "The Messiah." He scored 100 in a high-school game. He averaged 42.5 points as a senior at Camden High. He scored 3,462 points in high school, the most in New Jersey history. He scored 25 points in the McDonald's All-American Game at Duke.

It was never a question of whether Wagner would score, but how much. Nobody could stop him. He just did what he wanted when he wanted.

Then, his body began to fail him. He had stomach pain. He was fatigued. He lost weight. He lost his appetite.

All that was happening while he spent a year in college at Memphis and 3 years in the NBA. He tried all kinds of treatment. Nothing worked for long. It just kept getting worse.

He was eventually diagnosed with colitis, inflammation of the colon or large intestine. Last October, he underwent major surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.

"He was very, very sick when he left the Cleveland Cavaliers [in 2005]," said Dr. Joel Bauer, who performed the surgery. "We did an operation on him and basically he's recovered phenomenally."

How phenomenally?

I hope the Wagner article signifies that Wagner is going to be playing on a team soon. He's probably one of the few undersized scoring guards that I actually root for.

Just reading that article is getting my hyped up about Wagner.

Man, that Chinese dude... i dunno.. he's 29 right... i will go to a game and check him out.. altho... our team could have done heaps better if we could have scored... now we got 5 forwards who can all supposedly score... looking forward to Chinese Beckham, Reinaldo from Brazil and this other dude from Celtic to do some damage for us. If Roar can find the back of the net, we can make Top 3 I think (Y) being optimistic... all we need are goals in the A-League and we're set.

Well, lucky Riot doesnt come in here haha and derron, deron, same thing!

(3) North Carolina 96, (1) Duke 94

Preview - Box Score - Recap

By JING XU JR, AP National Writer
April 5, 2006

INDAIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Reshawn Tyson scored the game winning trey from NBA range at the buzzer. He played defence when it mattered most and did a great job at it. He was poised when his team was down late in the game. He was rewarded with the NCAA title for 2006 but he still needed help from his team mates in the end.

North Carolina toppled their third number 1 seeded opponent in as many games on their way to national glory for a second straight year with a completely different team. With 7 players from last year’s team having left the team, it was up to freshmen Tyson and Rocky Akonnor to lead the team through the tourney.

The win in the Final was a great team effort as Akonnor took up the burden of scoring as the Tar Heels took advantage of the Blue Devil’s lack of size. Tyson came up clutch while fellow Sophomore PG Marcus Kemp made two big buckets to help get UNC back into title contention.

For their opponent’s though, it was a nightmare; especially for Moses Chara. On the night where he was presented with a Team USA jersey from Jerry Colangelo, Chara’s night quickly turned sour with a pre-game tangle with North Carolina’s Tyson. He quickly made up for the delay of the start of the game by playing exceptional basketball, leading his team to a quick and sizable margin in the first half. Chara then saw his NCAA dream go quickly and suddenly down the drain as he was carried off the court on a stretcher with an injury.

A hard hit from big man Akonnor was hard enough to give him a broken ankle. Without their Senior star, Duke let their lead slip away quickly and then gave the game away in the second half.

Coach K, who was appointed Head Coach of Team USA in the National Team’s upcoming World Championship and Olympic campaigns, was bitterly disappointed with his star player’s last ever college game, “It was a great year for Moses and it is definitely a harsh blow to his preparations for his participation with the National Team program.”

Chara’s doctors have advised that he will need to sit out for 6 weeks and take a return slowly. Chara was looking optimistic in a press meet a day after the Final though, “I (Chara) think that I will make it to Team USA training camp. That’s certain but with the NBA, I’m afraid I won’t be able to make all my commitments to trying and working out for teams. My ankle probably won’t be ready by then but teams know who I am and how I play. I’m sure that one of the top teams will pick me up at least.”

Chara is looking like a lock in the lottery but the injury may hurt where he is taken. Originally projected as a Top 3 prospect, the Duke forward who can play either PF or SF and the two guard positions may be looking to slip further, even down to pick 9 or 10. “It’s really unpredictable where he will be taken,” his new agent Thierry stated, “We will see if we can work anything out with other teams.”

For his rival Reshawn Tyson, the freshman pledged to return to College for his sophomore year, “I’m not ready for it (NBA) and I will need more experience leading a team before I make the jump.” Tyson made a great case for himself though; playing his best ever basketball in the second half of the Final. As one NBA scout said, “I never knew Tyson had that range on his shot nor did I know he could play defence like he did tonight. It definitely helped raise his stocks. I think he is definitely worth a mid first round pick. In fact, he may even slip into the lottery. Either way, he’s going to make the lottery next year no matter what.”

Tyson finished the game with 35 points, 8 assists and was named player of the game despite turning over the ball 8 times. Rocky Akonnor was the driving force though as he finished with 22 points; 14 of them coming in a 5 minute period where North Carolina quickly caught up to their rivals. Marcus Kemp was also impressive with 14 points and 7 assits.

Moses Chara finished the game with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in just 18 minutes, playing mostly in the first half. After his teammate left the court, C Andy Kloss finished with a team high 26 points and 11 rebounds. Fitzy Mercer found it difficult to score and finished with just 11 points, most of them coming early in the game.

North Carolina had fallen behind early, 13-7 after 5 minutes. After 10 minutes, it was 19-7 before Duke went on a scoring romp and let the score balloon up to 36-16 with 5 minutes left in the half. As Moses Chara turned up the heat on the court, Tyson struggled as he started off ice cold. The first half ended with Duke on top 49-32 and Chara leading his team’s charge with 18 points and 6 rebounds.

The second half began with a strange twist of events as Moses Chara bumped into Tyson on one play and on the ensuing play, Akonnor flattened the Duke forward. Chara was left rolling in pain on the court as team doctors rushed to his aid and eventually sending him off to a nearby hospital. With Duke up by a large margin, the Tar Heels began to chip away at it.

This led to a scoring run that helped UNC catch up to 61-58 with 9 minutes left thanks to Rocky Akonnor overpowering his opponents in the paint. Tyson then tied the score at 61-61 with a three pointer as Duke called a time out to try to rectify their problem. In less than 6 minutes, the two teams had went on a scoring spree staying with each other; basket for basket. In a matter of minutes though, the Duke team made a flurry of successive jumpers to push ahead to 92-84.

This is where Marcus Kemp came in to lend a hand. After Tyson converted a big three point play, the PG made back to back treys to put UNC up ahead by 1 with 40 seconds left. Duke’s PG Matty King made a great pass, wrapping the ball around to an open Andy Kloss in the paint. Kloss made it 94-93 with just 18 seconds left. It was then up to Tyson who made the most of running out time and then hitting a three pointer, two steps behind the perimeter at the buzzer.

As the North Carolina team jumped up in joy and danced at mid-court, Moses Chara was stuck in a room getting a X-ray taken on his broken ankle. Talk about a bad day!
