(1) Duke 78, (8) Geo. Washington 43

Preview - Box Score - Recap

By KEITH PARSONS, AP Sports Writer
March 18, 2006

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) – Moses Chara needs no re-introduction to the people at home watching the NCAA tourney unfold. Or does he?

Since Duke team mate JJ Reddick was suspended by the college for substance abuse and being charged with D.U.I., Chara has stepped up for the Blue Devils.

Despite his brilliant performance in the ACC title game, Chara has still been ignored by opponent’s defences. Chara can only show them why they shouldn’t ignore him.

After a 20 point, 10 rebound performance against Southern University, Chara made the most of the George Washington players’ lax approach toward defending him. He continually made his open jumpers, repeatedly cut into the lane to either dish the ball out or make an easy lay up and added a few nice treys to add good measure.

Not only did the senior abuse his opponents on offence but on defence, he was a tough nut to crack and helped Duke run George Washington out of the gym en route to a 35 point thrashing.

“This really does a lot of good to our confidence,” Chara, who ended up with 29 points (11-18 FG, 3-4 3 PT, 4-4 FT), 7 rebounds and 5 assists, exclaimed, “I know we have what it takes to make the NCAA Final. It sucks that JJ (Reddick) won’t be there with us but I dedicate this to him!”

Duke, for the ninth straight year, made the round of 16 and will meet the winner of the game between Syracuse and LSU.

The Blue Devils led from the start thanks to an open jumper from Chara, then a trey from Chara and then a dunk from Chara. Despite Chara being the only scorer after 5 minutes, George Washington never changed their game plan.

“I was surprised, really,” Chara claimed, “I thought they would start playing defence on me or send a double team. Nothing happened and as a basketball player, all you can do is take advantage of that.”

Duke’s Coach K echoed his star senior’s thoughts, “I really think they (George Washington) did a poor job with their coaching adjustments and all. And to be quite frank, this could have been a much closer contest. Still, a win is a win and it’s their loss and not ours. We’re just thrilled to get through.”

However, one statistic which does go in the losing team’s favour were their rebounding edge over Duke. Chara’s side was out rebounded 40-28 and they were lucky that Geroge Washington didn’t use their size to try and beat them.

When asked about it, Coach K responded, “I guess rebounding has been something we’ve been trying to conquer all season. Ever since Shelden (Williams) left us for the NBA, we’ve always had small line ups out there.”

And for Shelden Williams who went undrafted and is currently playing in the NBDL, he should know that Duke would do anything to have him on their team. At least Chara would after he joked, “We need a big man. You know a team could be better if I’m their leading rebounder.”

i think:

Chara is more mature, has got the skills to be able to make an impact in any NBA team

Tyson is a kid full of energy, i think this guy has a lot of potential and could develop into one of the future NBA superstars, but at the moment he's still to inexperienced and as i said, he's too inconstant

if we need a guy who could help us right after Draft Day we should pick Moses Chara
if we have the time to wait a few years we should pick Renshaw Tyson

judging by this i'd go for Chara, KG is/was isn't getting any younger and his time is running out, if we want to keep him we should look at the present, not the future

but still... it's your decision, GM Sit

(1) Duke 67, (5) Syracuse 66

Preview - Box Score - Recap

By PAUL NEWBERRY, AP Sports Writer
March 24, 2006

ATLANTA (AP) – In a thrilling match up between the ‘Orange Men’ and the ‘Blue Devils,’ one player added to his new found college legacy. A lanky 6’9” forward with shaggy hair scored the bucket that won the game and grabbed the rebound that sealed it.

“It’s definitely one (game) to remember for the ages!” Coach K stated afterwards just after his team had run off the court to the jubilant cheers of their fans. Moses Chara, Duke Hero, basked in the glory as the media pounced on him after he had gotten changed, “I can’t really explain it but it’s a great feeling. I told you we’re meant to be in the next round and the Finals.”

And meant to be may be a good way to put it as Chara’s shot got a lucky bounce into the hoop. The ball had rolled around the rim before looking to roll out but then rolling back in. “Thank God for physics,” Joked a relieved Chara, “I can say I had a great look but the ball didn’t come out of my hands right so it felt like a missed shot.”

Fortunately for the Senior, his NCAA tournament is still going.

That though cannot be said for Syracuse’s’ Moten twins. The two Freshman guards will need to wait till next tournament to prove take their team further. After the game, the two made it clear they would return after a gallant effort this NCAA tournament.

“Hayden and I have had a great experience,” The 6’7” Anthony Moten said, “We lost to a better team and I know we will bounce back next year!” The 6’3” Hayden Moten basically repeated his twin brother’s words, “I guess that it’s over now but we can always look forward to the future.”

It was indeed a great effort by Syracuse as they kept Duke in check for the full game. From tip-off, the Orange Men made it tough for Duke to get their half court game going. Anthony and Hayden Moten kept the Duke backcourt from putting up shots or getting easy passing chances into the lane. Syracuse big man Andy Kloss denied the bigger but less experienced Mickey Bee from getting good looks at the basket.

However, Moses Chara; as he has been able to show in recent games, was solid as ever providing Duke with a scorer and reliable defender. When Hayden Moten scored a floater in the lane, Chara dunked it over him on the other. When Anthony Moten hit a three, Chara did the same but with two defenders chasing him. When Kloss swatted Bee’s shot, Chara rejected Kloss twice.

It was no surprise that when it came down to the final moments of the game, Duke turned to Chara who chose to try to win the game in one go rather than try to draw contact and go for at least a tie with free throws. Chara sank a fadeaway with just 8.2 seconds left.

Chara finished with 25 points (7-16 FG, 1-3 3PT, 10-12 FT), 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. For the other team, Anthony Moten finished with 18 points (6-10 FG, 3-4 3PT, 3-3 FT), 5 rebounds and 2 steals while twin brother Hayden Moten had 15 points (5-12 FG, 5-8 FT) and 6 assists.

Despite beating the Moten twins, Chara only had praise for the duo, “They play like Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. They’re tough to get past on offence, they can score so well and make their team mates better. Most importantly, they just know eachother so well… obviously (be)cause they are twins!”

Coach Jim Boeheim praised the Duke forward in return; either out of politeness or in awe, “Moses Chara is going to be one hell of a pro player.”

(3) North Carolina 72, (2) Tennessee 65

Preview - Box Score - Recap

By HOWARD FENDRICH, AP Sports Writer
March 24, 2006

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Tar Heels march on. Not many thought they would but they did. And the team thinks it has what it takes to keep going.

The second seeded Volunteers received 20 points each from Chris Lofton and C.J. Watson but just didn’t do enough to keep the energetic North Carolina team. Coach Roy Williams was impressed with the victory as UNC was lead by freshman centre Rocky Akonnor’s game and individual career high of 28 points.

Not known as a scorer, or as an impact player for that fact, Akonnor made up for the mistakes of his childhood friend Reshawn Tyson. The UNC swingman was lucky that the 7’3” Akonnor was always in position to put back his misses during the game and was always a dependable last line of defence for whenever the 6’6” Tyson decided not to play defence.

“Rocky played a great game tonight,” Coach Williams stated happily, “I’m disappointed in Ty, he could have played with a lot more intensity and passion. He could have played with a bit more urgency and we’re luck to have beaten a good team to get through to the next round. I guess all in all; we were luck Rocky gave us his ‘A’ game tonight. If he ahd hit his free throws, he could have had at least 35 points though.” Akonnor finished with 28 points on 13 for 15 shooting from the field but only shot 2 for 14 from the charity stripe. He also added 15 rebounds; 8 of which were offensive rebounds, and 6 blocks.

The third seeded Tar Heels were lucky to topple the second seeded Volunteers as Tennessee led for most of the first half. Akonnor who looked out of sorts, as usual, came out of the half time break looking more determined. The big man took more of North Carolina’s scoring load and found the back of the net several times with put-back dunks.

Tyson was poor throughout the game and fizzled into a non-factor by the start of the second half. He often forced passes and shots until he started to intentionally leave himself out of the offence. Despite his unwillingness/inability to be active in the game, Coach Williams kept his young leader on the court in case something happened.

The coach was criticised for it as one coach from Tennessee stated, “Leaving Tyson on the court nearly cost them the game. It was a very sad sight and we tried to take advantage of the situation but Rocky Akonnor played a brilliant game.”

The poor performance from Tyson meant that the high regard many Pro scouts held for him may take a hit. As one NBA scout said, “This game shows how Tyson is still a raw talent. He’s got to play defence all game or at least show an effort to try and play defence. And he’s got to learn to move without the ball. When his shot isn’t falling, he needs to learn how to help his team win without dominating the basketballl.”

Tyson finished on a mere 11 points (5-17 FG, 1-6 3PT, 0-6 FT) and 6 turnovers. He was lucky to register 5 assists, mostly thanks to Akonnor but if any of the misses Tyson had that got picked up by Akonnor for baskets; Tyson would have had more than 10 assists.

North Carolina now face another tough team in Connecticut led by Sophomore forward Rudy Gay. For this game, Roy Williams is literally begging for Reshawn Tyson to play at his utmost best.

(1) Duke 55, (2) Texas 51

Preview - Box Score - Recap

By PAUL NEWBERRY, AP National Writer
March 25, 2006

ATLANTA (AP) – LaMarcus Aldridge decided that he would skip the NBA Draft and stay in college to the delight of Longhorn followers. The Sophomore forward confirmed the media of his intentions to stay at Texas for his Junior year after his team lost a close game to a surging Duke team.

Moses Chara, again being the man in charge of the Blue Devils, came up strong in the clutch sinking back to back to back baskets to give his team the win in the final minute. Chara finished with a game high 26 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists and played great defence on the bigger Aldridge.

Aldridge couldn’t shake off Chara and succumbed to the Senior’s extra experience. He still did a good job in helping pace his Texas team with 21 points and 14 rebounds despite shooting 8 for 21 from the field. “Moses was the better player tonight,” The young Aldridge admitted, “He showed me that I wasn’t ready for the pros just yet and with Texas next year, I will be on a mission.”

Aldridge was expected to enter the NBA draft thanks to his NCAA season and many NBA scouts telling him that he was ready to make the jump after his sophomore year ended. After this game, he made a quick decision to stay in college. In comparison, Moses Chara who was relatively unknown at the beginning of the season has seemingly shot himself into fame and into the picture of being a Top 3 NBA draft pick in the June Draft.

“I’m very proud of Moses,” Coach K stated, “He works hard and has always played brilliantly in training. I now regret that I never gave him enough time on the court in the first three years of his college career but I guess it might have meant to be.”

According to Chara, he doesn’t regret being benched for three years, “I’ve never anticipated going pro. Just playing with the guys in training and being at games has been a great honour indeed. After we (Duke) won the (NCAA) title, watching Shane Battier on that team, I’ve always just wanted to make the team and be in the stadium. I didn’t care if I was on the bench or be a starter or even be just one of the dudes in the crowd.”

Now, the Blue Devils are just one game away from another NCAA championship game.

“It’s surreal, after four years here at Duke, I am finally here and what’s more is that I’m leading a team to the Finals. It’s exciting for sure,” Chara continues, “If someone told me that I would be here now, I would have slapped them silly.”

The game was tightly contested throughout with the 6’9” Chara hounding the 6’11” Aldridge into tough shots and corners where he would turn the ball over. Aldrdige struggled at first, missing his first five shots of the game before he finally figured Chara out.

After getting him stuck down on the low block, Aldridge faked to his right and then to his left before Chara jumped to try and block him. Aldridge pivoted and went right again, softly banking the ball into the hoop to the delight of his fans. That was the beginning of 9 straight points scored by Aldridge before Duke called a timeout and slowly regained control of the game. By halftime, the two teams were locked at a low scoring 31 apiece.

The second half was even uglier as both teams failed to score in the first 6 minutes of the game before Aldridge scored four straight buckets and with 9:43 remaining, Texas was ahead by a mere 5 points. The Longhorns kept ahead for the rest of the game and lead 51-50 with 1:02 left.

After Duke called a time out, Chara stepped back onto the court and quickly sank a long jumper at the top of the key. Then Aldridge’s shot was blocked by Duke’s Kloss and Chara grabbed the ball to dribble down court before popping up for another jumper. He scored from the bottom of the baseline and Duke led 53-51 with 27 seconds left.

Texas called a timeout and shoved the ball right into the hands of Aldridge and the big man missed a wide open lay up before Chara picked the ball out and called a time out. Then with 6 seconds left, Chara cut free from his man and scored a fade away to seal the game and Duke entry into the Final Four.

Duke now face UCLA in the Final Four for a chance to win a place in the NCAA Final.

Preview - Box Score - Recap

By JOSEPH WHITE, AP Sports Writer
March 26, 2006

ATLANTA (AP) -- “I told you so.”

Those were the words of Reshawn Tyson, the North Carolina Tar Heel who hit back at critics with his biggest performance yet in his college career. Third seeded North Carolina upset the UConn Huskies and reached the Final Four.

“No one anticipated we would be here and no one thought I could get the team here,” Tyson boasted after the game, “Let me tell you something. We’re going to win it all.”

The brash freshman is definitely enjoying the spotlight and pretending to be something he wasn’t. “I’m not really cocky or nothing but I decided this is what you people (Press) like to hear and write about so I might give it a go,” The youngster claimed and to prove he didn’t like ego he stated, “Oh yeah, I hate guys who just talk and do nothing. That’s why I don’t like Kobe Bryant.”

UNC stormed into the Final Four with a 15+ point thrashing of the Huskies on the back of a 40 point performance from ReShawn. Despite shooting a sizzling 16 for 24 form the field, the freshman guard showed his inability to apply himself on the defensive end allowing UConn Sophomore Rudy Gay to net 28 points on 10 for 17 shooting.

“Sure, I didn’t play that well on defence but I’m getting there,” Tyson responded to criticisms of his lazy defence.

For Roy Williams, it was a joy for him to see his young team mix it with the ‘big boys.’ He acknowledged what Tyson had to say about how no one thought his team would make it this far into the tourney. “We won it all last year and without seven of our old team here, even I thought it was hard to repeat but I never lost faith in my players,” Williams said, “I’m glad we’re doing well now and surprising a lot of people.”

After a poor effort in the previous game, Tyson lit up the scoreboard early and socred Carolina’s first 7 points of the match. By halftime, he had 17 points and didn’t stop there. He took a breather before coming back on with 17 minutes left in the second half and then scoring his other 23 points in a span of 8 minutes.

With just 9:35 left on the clock, Williams decided it was time to take his star player off the court with Carolina up 65-41. “I think he (Tyson) could have easily got to 50 actually but this isn’t about individual records or anything. We just need to win the games and once the game was won, I chose to rest him for our next game.”

The Tar Heels now have a chance to add to their glorious history by playing in another NCAA Semi-Final game. They will play number one seed Villanova, led by Seniors Randy Foye and Allan Ray, for a place in the NCAA Final.

“It’s really a dream come true and not in my wildest dreams would I imagine us coming up against a big team like Villanova for a place in the Final,” Freshman big man Rocky Akonnor said, “I think that my man Ty will bring his ‘A triple plus’ game that night!”

If North Carolina wants to stay in the hunt though, Rocky is right. ReShawn Tyson needs to play like he did against Connecticut for the Tar Heels to have a chance to make that big game.

- Thanks Coach Mark! Yeh... not sure if we should draft Chara and start him with KGF in the frontcourt... he's definitely the player who will produce right away as Flo and u have said!

Coach Mark wrote:Great performance by both prospects, yet I still think Chara is the better choice, hes a forward right? What are his guard skills like?

- Yeh, Chara is a SF... 6'9"... his potential is average. In comparison, Tyson is younger, 6'6" and his potential is excellent... With Chara's guard skills, he's a good passer and a good defender... got average speed and quickness. Dribbling is average and is a great shooter. Very solid player with limited weaknesses... acutally, as of now, he has no huge weaknesses...

For those stat lovers... here are Tyson and Chara's stats through 4 NCAA tourney games!

SF Chara: 4 GP 4 GS | 26 ppg, 8 rpg, 5 apg, 1.5 bpg
SG Tyson: 4 GP 4 GS | 25 ppg, 4 rpg, 2.6 apg

Oh yeah, I noticed how those stats seem a lil high but they are the premier perfromers in the Big Dance so far!

Please tell me who you think we should draft!

Yeah it sounds like Chara would be best, but after saying that, after i heard both of their abilities when talking to you on msn, Tyson is sounding pretty sweet too, and sounds like a good contributer on offense, we would just have to work on the defense, but since he has excellent potential he should train quite well
