I think the reason for that "intense" lighting is the dark court, its like there are bright lights on them causing very bright highlights and very dark shadows. I would lower the highlights so all that white isn't on the players, and increase the brightness of the shadows just a bit. You can also change the color of the lighting so its not all-white or all-black. You can change the color for each individual skin color type in the lighting file.
