The easiest and probably least controversial formulas are my defensive ratings. Most of you that have tried to make roster patches have probably already figured these out.
Again '88 Jordan, '96 Malone.
Blocking: Blocks-per-48 minutes X 20.
Jordan blocked 65 shots in 3255 minutes, 65 divided by 3255 = .020, X 48 = .959, X 20 = 19/59
Malone averaged .769 blocks-per-48 minutes, X 20 = 15/57
Note: Yes I know this is a lot lower than the ratings EA gave them, but how messed up is blocking in Live 2003?.
Steals: Steals-per-48 minutes X 20.
Jordan had 234 swipes, divide by 3255 minutes for .072, X 48 = 3.45, X 20 = 69/84.
Karl had 113 steals in 2998 minutes for .038, X 48 = 1.81, X 20 = 36/68.
Note: Before anybody complains about Jordan only having an 84 in steals, I invite you to create any ten players(with the exception of john stockton and mo cheeks)using this formula and see exactly where 84 stands. This is ment to be lower because steals are too previlant in Live 2003.
Offensive Rebounds: Offensive rebounds-per-48 minutes X 10
Jordan grabbed 149 offensive boards, divide by the 3255 minutes he played for .046, X 48 = 2.2, X 10 for 22/61.
Malone picked up a whopping 193 team rebounds in 2998 minutes, or 3.09 ORB-per-48, X 10 = 31/65. He won't be beating Moses, Sir Charles or Rodman in this catagory, but it's still respectable.
Defensive Rebounds: Defensive rebounds-per-48 minutes X 10.
Jordan grabbed 503 caroms on the defensive end, divided by 3255 minutes = .155, X 48 = 7.42, X 10 = 74/87. Not enough to crack the top 10, but still better than every center he ever played with.
Karl earned his MVP award with 616 defensive boards, divide by 2998, X 48, X 10 = 99/99.
Note: Karl Malone had 99 on the button(well 98.6), had he gone over I would have trimmed the number to 99 and add the excess to his offensive rebounding.
Offensive Awareness: The total of the raw ratings for FG, Passing, and Offensive Rebounding, divided by 2.
Jordan had a FG rating of 82, plus a Passing rating of 92, plus his 22 for offensive rebounding = 196, divide by 2 for a OA rating of 98/99.
Malone had a FG rating of 80, plus his 58 for Passing, and 31 in Offensive Rebounding for 169, half of which is his rating 85/92.
Defensive Awareness: The raw ratings of Blocking + Stealing + Defensive Rebounding, divided by 2. As well as certain bonuses if aplicable.
Jordan had ratings of 19, 69, & 74, added together thats 162, cut half we have 81. All players under 230lbs are likely to be poor shot blockers and rebounders so i give them a bonus of 20, even if they are good at either, so Jordan gets another 99.
Malone had ratings of 15, 36, & 99, together thats 150, divided by 2 = 75, as Karl is over 230lbs and is not a point guard, he gets no bonus so his rating is 75/87.
Note: Besides the 20 I give to players under 230lbs, I also give a bonus to point guards or notable defensive players. For this bonus i just move the finnished Live rating(including th 20 bonus)to the raw rating spot, so if a player were 82/91 he would become 91/95. A player only gets this once, so a great defensive point guard like Payton or Dennis Johnson would not double this bonus.
