Alley-oop question

what does matter in an alley-oop? of course it requires that the passer has great passing skill. just sometimes on a fastbreak, whenever i try to alley-oop with my shooting guard passing the ball, the receiver ends up not catching it even if the defender is far. is there such thing as receiving abiliy or offensive awareness is also a big factor? also, in an alley-oop, does inside scoring ability count? coz even in an open alley-oop, players like mutombo or howard can miss it.
will players with high dunk ratings tend to dunk the ball more than to do an acrobatic lay-up in an alley-oop? coz when i use rasho nesterovich alone, he often dunks when he's near the rim but in an alley-oop he seldom dunks.
