Dooling in the dunk contest seems interesting. I have him winning it. The Western All-Stars is a little mixed up, I'm surprised Kobe isn't even in it

Rookies Win For First Time Since 2002 As Two Centers Shine

Image

[HOUSTON, Feb. 24] – The opener of All-Star Weekend in Houston could not have been more exciting as the Rookies faced off against the Sophomores in the Got Milk? Rookie Challenge. On paper it looks like the Sophomores have got the Rookies: Emeka Okafor, Dwight Howard, Andre Iguodala, Ben Gordon, Sebastian Telfair… and the list goes on, every player on the Sophomore team is a starter on his respective team, whereas the Rookies only have Martell Webster, Andrew Bogut, and Deron Williams start for their own teams. As the game neared, it looked like experience was going to beat raw skill. The Rookies haven’t won this game since 2002, when Jason Richardson won the MVP. In 2003 Gibert Arenas led the Sophomores, and then Amare Stoudamire for the Sophomores in 2004. Last year the Rookies were destroyed 133-106 to Carmelo Anthony and the Sophomores; they will look to end that 3 year losing streak tonight in Houston.

First Quarter

As it looked on paper, the Rookies fell behind early to the Sophomores and were not able to get anything going. Dwight Howard did most of his damage early in the game with 6 quick points to put the Sophomores up 6-0, however Howard did not manage to score any more points after that, but he did not need to as the points were pretty well distributed, which each starter scoring at least 4 points. The Rookies were not to be outdone however as center Andrew Bogut start to take over and show why he was the college player of the year and the number one draft pick. Bogut and Granger double-blocked Gordon, and on the ensuing possession, he dunked over Dwight Howard. Through feeding the ball to Bogut the Rookies came back to pull 27-25, but that’s how the quarter ended.

Second Quarter

The 2nd quarter was much like the first, except for that it was Nenad Krstic who dominated instead of Howard. Krstic scored only 2 points in the first, but followed it up with 8 in the 2nd. He also managed 6 of his 9 boards as well and led the Sophomores’ counter against the late Rookies run. The star for the Rookies shifted from Andrew Bogut to Channing Frye, who had a great quarter with 6 points, 2 boards, and great lockdown defense on Howard, holding him scoreless. The score was tied at 49 all with 2 minutes left, but the Rookies were unable to score and gave up scores to Telfair, Krstic, and Iguodala in that span to fall behind by 6. At the break the leading scorers were Bogut with 12 while Krstic and Gordon had 10 each.

Third Quarter

Whatever was said at halftime lit a fire in the Rookies as they came out on fire hitting 5 shots in a row, including three pointers by Chris Paul and Danny Granger. The Sophomores tried to come back behind the slashing Ben Gordon and Sebastian Telfair, but it was just not enough. Bogut again began to dominate and had 25 points by the end of the quarter. Marvin Williams was a good contributor in the points category for the Rookies in the first half, but that took a backseat to his passing and he dished out 6 assists during this quarter. With 2 minutes left backup center Sean May was subbed in for forward Williams, and it all of a sudden became his game. In 2 minutes May scored 4 times for 8 points, and also grabbed every defensive rebound there was as well as 2 offensive boards for a total of 6 boards.

Fourth Quarter

By now the game was almost out of reach as the Rookies continued to surge. Sean May played even better than he did in the 3rd with 12 points, and 6 more boards. The play of the game came from a guard though. The Sophomores Iguodala went in for a windmill, but point guard Deron Williams came out of nowhere to rejected the shot out of bounds. That play summed up the last quarter for the Sophomores as they were not able to get much going and failed to convert on many occasions. Before the knew what happened, the Rookies were up by 20. In a last attempt Gordon tried to bring his team back but it was too late and the Sophomores fell for the first time since 2002, 116-95.

The Rookie Challenge MVP was shared between two Rookie centers, Andrew Bogut and Sean May. Bogut led the game with 29 points, 7 boards, 3 assists, 6 blocks, and 2 steals; May played 7 less minutes and still scored 20 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, had 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.
