First Hand Impression (Peter's Review)

Postby baller status on Wed Sep 28, 2005 12:44 pm

(I know that threads have been made like this), but i think my review may help people more then a bunch of crap others have written. First off, after the installation, i noticed that there was a pop type of hip hop music on the main nba live menu page, which may or may not be good for some people. I configured my controller and played as dwayne wade in practice mode.

the main buttons/actions are the same for the most part, so it wont take that much time to get used to the controlling. the ice-skating affect is still there, :x and the dribbling got dimmed down a few levels, mainly because the post up/back down is the down movement of the right analog stick. i thought id try out the "superstar" feature. so i pressed the button for it and also hit the dunk button. he dunked it of course... so i tried the superstar button with the pass button near the rim. he dunked it again but did a windmill dunk. same thing happened with the pro hop button. the shoot button did another dunk. i decided to see what would happen if i pressed those combinations farther away from the basket. he would sometimes do an almost-dunk, but miss it most of the time. when i hit the superstar button+pro hop button though, he did an alley oop to himself, which was kinda surprising.

i played as shaq, duncan, allen, and kidd in practice mode also. shaq did a variety of dunks near the basket with the superstar button. i thought the shooter superstar was kinda interesting because u can make the shooter "follow through" with his shot, keep his hand in the shooting motion after the shot, do an automatic bank shot, or a fake pass then shoot shot. so that was a unique addition i thought. i couldnt do superstar moves with kidd because he was a passer/playmaker (which i thought was kinda dissapointing because when i played an exhibition game i had no idea as to which pass was which when i controlled parker, thus turnovers were created). duncan kinda dissapointed me also-his "superstar" moves didnt match him at all. he did some weird ass shots in the post and did not fit him at all. but other then that-the superstar feature seems like a very good addition once i get the hang of it.

i played an exhibition game as the spurs, my opponent was the nets. the arcade feel is there, but the scoring doesnt play out like its arcade style. on superstar, it was a very hard game, most likely because i was trying to implement the superstar moves in the game. but the AI i can tell has been improved because the computer tries at almost every fast break opportunities and makes u work on defense in the half court set. as of right now i didnt mess with the sliders except for fatigue because im getting a feel for the gameplay, but i can tell ill have to later. like i said earlier, itll take time to get used to the superstar feature, but i think its a good addition. one highlight in the game that i remember the computer did was on a fast break. happened quite early in the game with like 10 minutes left. i didnt think the comp. would push the ball up so i didnt get back on D so fast.... jefferson was near the 3 point arch and kidd was near the halfcourt-kidd bounced passed to jefferson and jefferson finished with a 2 handed tomahawk. that was a pretty cool play i thought. only played 1 quarter but i can tell that this will be a good game. i may play later if i have time/feel like it and ill probably post again after i play it.

edit: o ya... the crowd sounds more realistic i noticed... as i was down for the majority of the quarter, they booed me frequently and cheered in a different way then in the past when my team made a big play. also, i had had a nice (although kinda unrealistic) alley oop close to the basket from ginobili to duncan. had duncan been a more athletic dunker, it woulda been more realistic but the alley-ooping i think has improved vastly too.

It's because of all the new guys. There have to be like 100 guys who joined since the beginning of September. It was so much more peaceful and civilised here before then. I'll bet any money they'll ruin this thread too :x

Haha yeah, steve is pretty boring as a co-commentator, sometimes you will go literally minutes before he says something again which isn't so bad.

I joined here this week but I've been playing live since 95, so I promise not to be as annoying as some of the newbies around (Y)

I will share my REVIEW this week as I got the copy earlier.. I think SLIDERS would hel alot better to have a more SIM game instead of Arcadsh type..

It's early to judge though! RIGHT review is in our HAnDS and not with IGN or GAMESPOT.. (Y)

Does anyone else find that Marv says "and..." way too much! Like, before every line of speech?

Good review Peter (Y)

I believe the key word was "impression"... his initial feelings on the game. And yes, it's very easy to get an impression from playing just a bit of a game, the differences become quickly apparent.

man, i have wanted to play nba live but ive just been so busy lately. i played it just now for like 30 minutes... i cant really concentrate (tired), but the game plays real good and as soon as i get used to the freestyle superstar, itll make the game that much better. the ball icon must be "scorer" for superstars. its hard to believe the likes of randolph, duncan, ming and other like them (big men) can score the same way as james and more athletic players. i havent even touched the dunk contest/3 point mode, so ill probably do those next time. my biggest thing that i would hope that they improved on is the online gameplay (easo)... but i doubt that ill get my wish.

I already started my dynasty Rockets team last night till 5am.. I got blown out on my first game by the KINGS because of unfamiliarity with the new buttons but manage to win 3 in a row after..

The game is very much better than 2005 especially on the spacing, fixed block shots, sweet shooting, dribbling, cross-over, lay-up (reverse) and DUNK animations, tweaked camera angles (press box), little bit improved net, nice off ball animations and mocaps, alley-hoops, Dunked on scenarios, player evolution and superstar mode but most often the HIGHFLYER & POWER superstar players like wade & shaq were really UNSTOPPABLE..

The STATS so far were unrealistic because I played under 7mins per qtr ALL-star and the final scores reached to 80-90+.

Maybe I have to ADJUST more on the SLIDERS.. STATS on the steals were good based on my current sliders and same with the REBOUNDS..

I'm a little disappointed because of only few cut-scenes installed in the game..

OVER-ALL, the game is a worth of your penny!!! (Y)

The scorer icon is the same but there are inside and outside scorers... the outside guys hit like fadeaway j's and stuff while the inside guys do hookshots. Some moves are similar but mostly they are designed to work better from inside or outside... you know? Like Duncan isn't going to drive the lane and pull up for a 20' fadeaway jumper.

before i play again... does anyone know how to do the instant replay animations? it has those arrows and a number "4" at the top of the screen but i cannot figure out what to do. ive replayed 2 plays so far, but couldnt figure out which buttons i pressed because i pressed a lot at the same time. maybe its the combination of all 4 buttons?...

Whenever you see it just push button 4 (aka the pro-hop button IIRC). It may delay a second but you certainly get a replay.

Took me a while to figure out what you meant by input. I don't think of it as input, most of it is spamming, some is good, and I acknowledge that (Y), but don't tell me that OMG LIVE IS SEXY is imput.
