After playing Freestyle..this is what Live needs to do..

Postby Bang on Sun Jul 10, 2005 2:19 pm

Freestyle is a Korean online B-ball game. Despite it's problems with some aspects, in many aspects I find it much more realistic than nba live.

1. Shots should have at least a few kinds of bouncing off possibilities. The old swish or obvious miss is kind of annoying.
2. There needs to be a pick button. That would improve co-op gameplay significantly. This is quite easy to implement.
3. Only 1 or 2 dunks per player per game. (As in real life...seriously Shaq had the most dunks with only 200 something, that's just 3 dunks per game)
4. Timing based rebounding. Rebounding should be based on position and timing, so it would be much harder for a newbie to get rebounds. This would allow a much better balance of offensive vs defensive rebounding. Even with offensive rebounding sliders at 100% it's so damn hard to grab a rebound on offense.
5. Game needs to be slower.
6. Timing and position based shooting. People need to miss more.
7. Tricks should fail 50% of the time or maybe 20%. This prevents freestyle abuse.

If freestyle can do all this right, which has nowhere near the budget of nba live, I don't see why nba live can't.

I think just the timing based rebounding alone can change everything for the game. After playing freestyle and being insulted that I couldn't rebound, I realized how easy rebounding was in nba live.

www.fs.co.kr

but chances are, if you aren't Korean you can't play it. (The site is in Korean and the registration requires you to put something that's like your social security number.)
Bored.

It's an online game? Or can we download it somewhere? If so, could you give us a link?

The shooting is gay and its like a wannabe of Street. There are like 5 controls...boring ass game.

Impossible to get a rebound? It's because you haven't played it enough. I bet your level is less than 10. My friend can grab at least 80% of the rebounds based on timing because of people who don't know how to time their rebounds. It's all about practice and timing, which is how NBA should implement the timing. Yes the graphics aren't that good, but the rebounding and the fact that you can set screens yourself is much better. The pick button alone could do wonders for NBA live.
Like I said, it's not perfect, but the rebounds are MUCH better than live. If you play the game more you'd know that. And it's not a wannabee of street. How many dunks do you see in a single frestyle game? Not much, unless you're a newbie and don't know how to play defense. How many tricks actually work? The trick button is only used successfully 20% of the time or so. This alone makes it MUCH different from NBA street. As for the controls, they are a bit limiting, but it's an online game, so you have to do that. Plus, I'm not into all that trixfying to the max and dunking...THAT'S NOT THE ONLY THING ABOUT BASKETBALL. All those additional buttons in NBA Live just serve to do ridiculous tricks that makes more sense.

And for the blocking thing...that's called...LAG..that's your fault. Actually that might be why you can't grab any boards...

Yea, thats what a newbie real basketball player would also say, just practice.

There is a pick and roll button of course, but not a button to do a screen yourself! (This will only happen if you were on offense and didn't have the ball I guess, so for a lot of people it didn't matter.)

Oh and pick and roll doesn't even work properly in live 2005. Sometimes it does, but a lot of times they just stand still and do nothing.

when I wrote comments very similar to these some time ago I got bombed with people around here what do I really want from the game and that if I want to have a realistic game I should hit the court and play. What you're saying here actually corresponds to what I ment - I don't need all those freaking flashy graphics, what's the use of it when the gameplay itself has got tons of flaws. I just need a solid basketball game that simulates the basic aspects of basketball and I just don't care about the presentation part of it. Hell, how long am I gonna be pleased about beautiful graphics, there's always just a limited amount of it in such game anyway, sooner or later I'm gonna need something more anyway. But yeah, we talk about mass market here and so we can't expect it the other way around. I's a big shame because yes, it's ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM to make a great basketball simulation, but the developers just can't focus on that, they must focus on everything that sells. It's practically a closed circle issue and the only hope for real basketball players is to hope that the gameplay will finally evolve throughout the years to a great level along with the graphics. So that we don't buy basketball games only to be fed by stupid marketing short-lasting eye candies but to be able to play some real basketball that makes real fun to be played over and over again and not just create total frustration just like many of the NBA Live series did.

That's absolutely true, the effect of "WOW GRAPHICS!" lasts at max only for 5~10 games. Seriously, remember all those cut scenes in Live 2003? After the 2 billionth time I wanted an option to eliminate all cut scenes. This is especially true in sports games, because who the hell plays the game all zoomed up unless it's boxing or something like that. In fact, I always stretch it out as far as possible and when I play in a small tv, my players look no different from pixels. It's sad that the flashy elements of basketball outweigh the fundamental, but then again...I hate the Spurs for that reason. However, there is a limit to the flashiness. Even super flashy teams like Phoenix don't score 90% of their shots with ally-oops (like I do with Phoenix in nba live 2005). Hopefully like what happened PES did with FIFA, some competition releases an uber realistic, not too much flash type basketball and catch up to NBA Live, making NBA Live change completely. Yes, 2K games are sort of like that, but 2K games aren't THAT realistic neither nor do they sell as much as NBA Live.

There is a pick button, but you can only use it if you are on offball control, I think it's either the post up or the alley oop button when you are off the ball, can't remember which.

Well I tried the post up button, which did nothing if I remember correctly...doesn't the ally oop button just make the guy pass an ally oop?

Hm...I guess I'll try it.

To set a screen I think you have to make it one of your four D pad plays... like when you press left on the D pad for instance it'll call a pick and roll.

No, I know that, I meant I want my player to set a screen. As in we're playing 2 player co op, you have the ball. I want to set a screen PERSONALLY so that you can go through, instead of relying on stupid AI which doesn't respond half the time anyhow.

Well the problem is you need a Korean social security number (Citizen number?) in order to register... Or you can upload a file proving your identity, which is really too much of a hassle..
