cool..i have the same specs as you have..
First, you have to see what framerates you're getting by turning on the in-game framerate counter from the console. If they're in the 40-50 range on medium settings, you should be happy.
If the game is unusually slow for whatever reason, update your ati drivers to the newest version of catalyst first, and then upgrade to directx9.
As for the in-game settings, I think medium would do best for this radeon graphics card. Anything higher and you're just asking for trouble. Play at 1024x768 as well, in-game ansiotropic filtering is alright too. Turn down shadows and reflective lighting to either medium or low.
Make sure antialiasing is turned OFF in your ati control panel too as this would produce a large performance hit.
