Carmelo Anthony huge game led the Nuggets to the first playoff win

Joe Johnson returned to action for the first time since February

PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- The Nuggets had nothing but winning on their mind in tonight’s game. After getting swept by the Suns in the season, they wanted to prove a point to everyone who was watching. “We wanted to show people that we can beat this team,” Anthony said. Not only did the Nuggets beat Phoenix, but they dismantled them in a 111-97 win to have an early 1-0 lead in the first round of the playoffs. “We came out and executed off plays, and Carmelo was on fire,” Nuggets guard Dermarr Johnson said. Anthony scored 17 of his 38 points in the 4th quarter to keep the Nuggets ahead. Phoenix never led in the game and the Nuggets won every quarter except the last one.

After Carmelo knocked down a three with 9:14 left in the 4th quarter to put the Nuggets up 87-68, Suns coach Mike D’Antoni looked at Joe Johnson to come off the bench. The crowd gave him a standing ovation as he entered at the 9:08 mark. “He wasn’t suppose to play tonight, but he said he wanted to give it a go and after seeing how the team was playing late in the game, I wanted him to get some action,” Coach D’Antoni said. Seconds later, he made his first shot from the corner which was a deep 3-pointer. At the 5:00 mark, Johnson adjusted his shot against Voshon Lenard and was able to get the layup to fall as he cut the Suns deficit to 95-85. “I felt good out there tonight, but the fact that we lost the first game really hurt us,” Joe Johnson said. “I’m feeling great now and I’ll be ready whenever the coach is ready for me.”

The closest the Suns got to the Nuggets was 10 points after Anthony kept knocking down baskets. “Carmelo was just unstoppable,” Quentin Richardson said who led the Suns with 23 points. Richardson was the only Phoenix player who was able to shooting decent from the field other than Jim Jackson ad Steve Nash. Shawn Marion shot a season-low 4-20 from the field, while Amare Stoudemire shot 8-23. “None of the shots were falling, we played exactly how we played against Sacramento a few nights ago when they blew us out,” Jim Jackson said who finished with 15 points.

In Joe Johnson’s return, he scored 5 points, had 1 assist on 52-3 shooting in 7 minutes of play. Marcus Camby, who came back from injury as well, was very productive tonight in the Nuggets win with 17 points and 15 rebounds. “Marcus played like he never was injured,” Coach Karl said. “I wasn’t planning on playing him that long, but he wanted to stay in and he kept producing so we had to keep him in the game.”

 i guess thats the only good thing about losing

im hoping, i might have to put jj back in the starting lineup next game because they did say he was 100% healthy now for the 2nd game. i will wait til after game 2 though and marion and stoudemire should have some good games

Marion is always butter for me :\ I'm sure you'll do better next game though. But I'd still like a picture of Earl Boykins at the title and the title being "Boykins drops 50"

in game 1, he was missing short jumpers and couldnt hit any wide open 3's. boykins will have a hard time scoring 50 no matter how sorry the suns defense is

Since it's the weekend, I will try to play two games today since I won't have really nothing to do.

NUGGETS VS. SUNS
America West Arena, Phoenix, 7:00 p.m., PST

TV, radio: TNT; KTAR 620
SEASON RECORD: Nuggets, 44-38; Suns, 64-18.
SEASON SERIES: 4-0 Suns
PLAYOFF SERIES: 1-0 Nuggets lead

KEY PLAYERS ON SUNS
Quentin Richardson- 23pts, 4rebs, 10-16 FG in Game 1
Shawn Marion- 11pts, 14rebs, 4-20 FG in Game 1
Amare Stoudemire- 17pts, 16rebs, 8-23 in Game 1

KEY PLAYERS ON NUGGETS
Carmelo Anthony- 38pts, 5rebs, 2stls in Game 1
Kenyon Martin- 18pts, 14rebs, 4blks in Game 1
Earl Boykins- 2pts, 4mins in Game 1

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Nuggets did what they had to do in Game 1, showing that they had a chance in this series. Carmelo Anthony put on the type of performance that he use to have at Syracuse during their championship run. He scored 38 points, which was a playoff high for him. "I just know when I had the ball that I was going to attack," Anthony said. "The first game is always important and it's good that we got it out the way and we have to continue the same type of play." The Suns were beaten in every category and two of their top players were locked down on the offensive end combining for 12-43 from the field. In Marcus Camby's return to the floor, he took control grabbing rebounds and scoring in the paint when the Nuggets needed him. "Camby was there for us tonight along with several other players," Coach Karl said. "I was feeling a little funny about letting him start tonight, but it turns out that it was a good move."

Suns guard Joe Johnson wasn't even expected to play at all in Game 1, but he was cleared to play and he was dressed for the game. He only played 7 minutes, but expect for his minutes to rise in Game 2 and there is a possibility of him starting in Game 3 if things go right with his wrist. "I want us to win and if I can help the team in anyway, I will try my best," Johnson said. "I know we can beat this team because we showed that in the season." One key player on the Nuggets who barely played in the game was Earl Boykins. He scored 2 points in just 4 minutes of play and there were alot of questions about why he rarely played from the media. "Boykins is the heart and soul off the bench for this team, but we really didn't need him in this game with Miller playing good and we never let the Suns lead throughout the entire game," George Karl said. "Things may change in Game 2 because you can't expect the same thing every game."

Carmelo Leads 4th Quarter Comeback
Denver takes a surprising 2-0 advantage over the Suns

After scoring 17 in the 4th quarter in Game 1, Anthony scored 16 in the 4th in Game 2

PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- A huge celebration rang in the visitor's locker room as the Nuggets were able to overcome a 9-point deficit heading into the final quarter and come out with another big win over the Suns in Game 2 of the 2004-05 NBA Playoffs. Denver had three players scoring in the 20+ point range with Carmelo leading the way once again with 29 points to go along with 12 rebounds and 5 assists. He is averaging 33.5ppg in the series and has been doing it all for the Nuggets in crunchtime.

Denver was able to open up the 4th quarter scoring five straight points, cutting their deficit to 78-74. Amare Stoudemire picked up his 6th foul at the 8:34 mark and had to sit out for the rest of the game finishing with just 12 points and 9 rebounds. Carmelo pulled up for a 3 at the top of the key that moved the Nuggets within' 84-83 with 8:26 remaining in the game. Joe Johnson snapped the mini run made by the Nuggets with a 3-pointer of his own at the 8:06 mark to put Phoenix back up by 4. The Nuggets took their first lead of the quarter after Anthony made a fadeaway over Marion to put Denver up 90-89 with 6:37 left. "We fell apart in the 4th," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We allowed them to score 42 points and you will never win a game that way."

Quentin Richardson made a big 3 with 2:31 left in the game to put the Suns up 99-97. Afterwards, it was all Nuggets making big shots when they needed them. Kenyon Martin put up a circus shot in the paint over Hunter to put Denver up 108-103 with 38 seconds left, but Phoenix didn't give up. Joe Johnson who returned from injury in Game 1 was able to make his 2nd three of the game with 30.6 seconds left after the Suns called a timeout. He cut the lead to 108-106 and scored his 10th point of the game. The Nuggets used most of the clock on their last posession, then Andre Miller passed it to Anthony who was 28 feet out to make the 3-point bomb over Richardson wiht 6.9 seconds left to give Denver Game 2. "He came through for them when they needed him," Richardson said. "I couldn't believe he made the shot though because I guarded him pretty tight."

The Nuggets are on the verge of having a big upset over the Suns if Phoenix can't pull themselves together in Game 3. Team officials reported that Joe Johnson is expected to start in the next game and the Suns will bring Jim Jackson back off the bench. "We have to regroup quickly before this thing seriously get out of hand," Stoudemire said who fouled out in the 4th quarter. "They have scored 111 points in each game against us and its ridiculous." The Suns were up by 11 points heading into halftime, but the Nuggets outscored them 72-56 in the 2nd half.

Crap, this is reminiscent of the Nuggets knocking out the Sonics back in 94, i believe. They were the 8th seed then , too.

BTW, this is unbelievable. By far the best dynasty here, keep it up. (Y)

Maybe now I should take the time to read all 15 pages...

yea, if i get down 3-0, there is a tough chance of me making a comeback.

boykins did get a block in the game but it really wasnt a block BLOCK, it was like one of those blocks where he goes up for a rebound and they give him a block for it for some reason. that has happened a couple of times in my game. it does hurt that ive lost home games, but we are a good road team as well. we will have a certain routine going on for game 3 and 4 though and you will have to wait and see what it is first :P if i get knocked out of the 1st rd, it will be like the whole season was basically a waste, so the nuggets need to expect somethin in game 3 :x

Yup agreed there, hoping a comeback bro! The Gold Back Burner,

me too :( now the series has to go six games, but since im puttin johnson back in the starting lineup, i should be back to normal hopefully.

I will try to do Game 3 preview and recap tonight before I go to bed. If I don't then it will definitely be tomorrow because I want to play them again so bad.

Man WTF are you doing lol?
Stoudemire is choking, only 12 points and 6 fouls...
It would be great to see an 8th seed team become the champions though, just like NY almost did in 1999, but that's means you'll probably be out in the first round (or it has to be the East 8th who does it) so nevermind.

Yeah! So you've got to win these games.

Yeah, I loved that. That was my favorite Knicks team.

But I don't want that happening here.

Come on man. You gotta win the next game.

What defense are you doing?
