'MEKA WINS BACK-TO-BACK TEAM MVP HONOURS

With a total of 83 points, Emeka Okafor has won his 2nd straight Bobby Phills Memorial Medallion for the 2005/06 season. Okafor didn't really secure this year's award until PG Gilbert Arenas went down for over a month with injury. Okafor's consistent play helped lead him to this year's award, as he beat out surprising rookie Guy Dumars and guard Gilbert Arenas for the honour.

Image
Okafor demonstrates to Garnett that it pays to go to college

The final standings at the conclusion of the 2005/06 season were:

1st - F/C- Emeka Okafor (83pts)
2nd - C- Guy Dumars (66pts)
3rd - G- Gilbert Arenas (65pts)
4th - F/G- Gerald Wallace (33pts)
5th - F- Luke Walton (29pts)
6th - G/F- Kyle Korver (24pts)
7th - G- Steve Blake (17pts)
8th - G- Andrew "The X" Watson (11pts)
9th - F/C- Othella Harrington (8pts)
10th - G- Willie Green (6pts)
11th - F/C- Melvin Ely (5pts)
12th - G- Ben Tshibaka (1pt)

Congrats to Emeka Okafor, the 2005/06 winner of the Bobby Phills Memorial Medallion.

SCOUTING REPORT #4

With March Madness winding down, it's time go Stateside and check out the best that the collegiate system has to offer. We start in the Pacific Northwest.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST

The Pacific Northwest is probably the weakest of the 4 US regions as it only possesses 2 sure-fire 1st Round picks. The top 2 prospects available are NLSC SG's who are intent on leaving their mark at the next level.

JING XU (Jxuusa)

Image

Jing Xu leads off this region and is the 2nd highest rated high schooler behind Gerald Green. Xu is a gazelle on the court and can run all night, as he uses his teammates' screens to his advantage. Xu has a nice mid-range shot and his range extends out beyond the arc. Xu's game does have doubters as many scouts suggest his frail body can't withstand the rigours of the NBA. Tell that to Reggie Miller and Rip Hamilton. Jing Xu figures to be drafted somewhere late in the lottery.

NBA Comparison - Kerry Kittles (pre-injury) meets Rip Hamilton

Image
If you give jxuusa this much room, then it's already over

HONOR GLOW

Image

The debate has been on for a couple of years now. Who's the better pure shooter, Duke's Reddick or UCLA's Honor Glow?!? Well we'll have to wait another year to see Reddick in the NBA, but Honor Glow has recently finished a successful 4-year career with the Bruins. Glow's marksmanship is in high demand by many NBA teams. However Glow's game is more than just shooting the rock. Honor Glow is a strong defender on the perimeter and plays much bigger than his height (6'2") on the defensive end. Scouts say Glow is too one-dimensional and can't create his own shot. However, there's a market in the NBA for guys who can shoot the longball. Glow is a true marksman and figures to go somewhere in the mid-to-late 1st Round.

NBA Comparison - Anthony Peeler (now) meets Derek Fisher

Image
Honor Glow one guy you don't want to play in H-O-R-S-E

RONNY TURIAF

Image

Turiaf is slotted in as a late 1st Round pick. This is due to the fact that the 'Zags star PF has fire in his belly that coaches love. He's an enforcer and will do the dirty work at both ends of the court. Turiaf has solid post moves, is a very good offensive rebounder and is developing a mid-range spot-up J. This French strongman will not find a home somewhere late in the 1st Round.

NBA Comparison - Etan Thomas

Image
There's nothing soft about this Frenchman

NATE ROBINSON

Image

Nate Robinson is quick, he's got a 42-inch vertical leap, he's exciting, he takes over games at will from the PG position, he's strong, he can get to the hoop at will and has a killer instinct. Sounds like a lottery pick to me. Wait a sec, he's 5'9" at a stretch. His jumpshot isn't reliable, and he's more of a scorer than a shooter. Scouts figure these could cause problems at the next level. He's now slotted in as an early 2nd Round pick and is unlikely to squeeze into the 1st Round. The team that picks him with their 2nd Round pick is going to get a steal, that's for sure.

NBA Comparison - Earl Boykins

Image
Who knew that Webster would one day play in the NBA?!?

Nice updates, too bad it's a very weak draft class...

One question: Who can create me? I have a pic and a headshape suggestion and would like to see me included in a dynasty, but i'm crap in any artistic endeavour so....

it ain't really a very weak draft class....I just haven't edited all the player's ratings yet....I'd say it's an average or good draft class....only a couple of top talents and most of the rest of the 1st Round is all pretty similar so you could be getting a better player at 16 or 18 than you would at 6 or 7....just like real life I guess....

as for who can create you, just go to patch requests forum and post a pic of yourself (it is best and easier to make if the pic is straight on, of a reasonable size and quality, has good lighting, and your mouth has to be closed), and suggest an NBA player's headshape that is similar to yours (perhaps Luke Walton in your case) and they'll probably do it....but if you don't have high quality pic like I didn't, you end up as CK put it, a clown

jxuusa wrote:oh whoa, the paul watson thing is interesting, never noticed it until i read it again. though i thought there was a cutoff age. still, amazing
and the everybody loves raymond... nice

I just noticed this, missed it the first time around....there is no real cutoff age otherwise I wouldn't have been eligible to be drafted in 2005 draft (over 22) and neither would guys like Seraph, cocobee and my older bro....I'm using lower limit cutoff for college and Euro players starting next season (I think I said something about that in an earlier scouting update)....it doesn't apply to NLSC players....I could have included my brother as a Free Agent (like I'm doing with Luis Scola and Sarunas Jaskevicius this season), but I like the fact that his drafting will be random....even if he was 35 I would have him in the draft, even though he'd probably retire after his rookie season

SCOUTING REPORT #5

We now head down to the US Southwest, a region that possesses 6 possible 1st Round picks and the potential No. 1 overall pick.

US SOUTHWEST

ANDREW BOGUT

Image

Bogut sprung onto the basketball landscape at the Under 18 World Championships where he led his home country, Australia to the gold medal, and in the process, won tournament MVP honours and caught the attention of NBA, collegiate and European scouts. Bogut chose to head to college at Utah. Bogut only need two seasons with the Utes to realise that he was ready to move onto the next level. With the dearth of talented bigmen these days, NBA scouts are salivating at the thought of a talented bigman such as Bogut. Andrew Bogut has great footwork, is a very good passer for a bigman, especially out of double teams, can step out and hit the mid-range jumper, has some nice post moves, is a good rebounder and a pretty decent shotblocker. Unlike most international bigmen, Bogut is not intimidated by any opposition, as proved at the 2004 Athens Olympics where he played players like Tim Duncan tough. Bogut is a lock to go in the Top 3, and has a very good chance of going No. 1.

NBA Comparison - A Mix of Vlade Divac, Kevin McHale and Brad Miller

Image
As I said, he can intimidate, as can seen by his clenched fist he's ready to go

GERALD GREEN

Image

Gerald Green is a superb athlete who at 6'8" can play both the SG and SF positions. Green is silky smooth and could develop into something special. At the same time, Green is a high schooler, and his selection will be based solely on his excellent potential. Green is a lock for lottery, and should go in the 6-10 range in this year's draft. The team taking him will have to wait a couple of seasons for Green's game to catch up to his athleticism, but it could be worth it.

NBA Comparison - Tracy McGrady

Image
Green figures to breathe some life back into the Dunk Contest next season

DANNY GRANGER

Image

Here's a fact for you. Danny Granger was the only player in college basketball to average over 18 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks in the 2004-2005 season. Those stats speak volumes about his game. But it goes deeper than that. Granger is a pretty good athlete, has great intensity and instincts, and could really become a good defender in the NBA if he sets his mind to it. Granger does a bit of everything, and should be able to help the team that picks him in many ways. The main downside on Granger is his durability and his inability to play a college season without games lost to injury. This doesn't bode well for the gruelling 82 game season that he'll face in the NBA. Either way, some team will take a punt on him somewhere in the middle of the 1st Round.

NBA Comparison - Smaller version of Eddie Griffin (less the problems)

Image
Who knew The X had it in him to make a cyberface?!? Not me....

SALIM STOUDAMIRE

Image

He took the nation by storm with his heroics in the NCAA Tournament. Now his college career is over, Salim Stoudamire must now turn his focus on securing a 1st Round selection and a guaranteed contract. It will be tough for him, but he could squeeze into one of the last few 1st Round slots. Stoudamire is a lefty who can flat out shoot the rock. As can be seen by his NCAA tourney results, he's not afraid to take the big shot, and he can light it up big time when he's on. Problem with Salim is he's a SG in a PG's body and will have to make the transistion to PG. Problem with that is that he probably doesn't have the skills like Arenas had to make that switch. At the very least, he'll be a spark off the bench and be a great spot-up shooter. Let's see if he can squeeze into a guaranteed contract.

NBA Comparison - Nick Van Exel

Image
He's that good that he can shoot with his right hand as well as his left hand....haha....j/k....I'll edit that

once I'm finished April summary and final 2 scouting reports, I'll do small season recap with league leaders, final standings, awards, etc....then I'll move on to playoffs....maybe I'll be able to pick them a bit better this year  ....

APRIL SUMMARY

Well, this is the last month of the season, and you all knew he was virtually impossible to make the playoffs, and you were right. It was a gallant last month though as the team went 4-3 for it's 2nd straight winning month in the franchise's history. After the All-Star break the team put up a winning record. It's a shame the team stunk it up prior to ASW.

It's been a good season, with improvements all around. Main surprise was the strong play of "That Guy", and he's become a fan favourite around the NLSC no doubt :D . I think he's the frontrunner for ROY, especially after his superb month of April, which was probably the best month of basketball by a rookie bigman since Tim Duncan. Check out his stats for the month below.

As for the other players, Okafor was rock solid and despite not making All-Star team this season and his numbers dipping slightly, he did it with a lot less shots and a lot more efficiency. Look for 'Meka to continue to flourish in Bobcats' colours. Gerald Wallace was re-signed and expected to explode, but his game just never took off as he struggled to find his niche. However, after the ASW, Wallace seemed to come out of his shell and become more of a factor in games, and it's no surprise the team starting winning.

Gilbert Arenas was brought in from Washington to star at PG, but I felt he was a tad erractic, and never gave the team the leadership it so needed. Judging by his last couple of games this season (he averaged close to 30ppg and played clutch ball), things will improve from Arenas. Kyle Korver, another newcomer, started the season out as the starting SG and played well, but the team never got the W's, so he was replaced by 2nd Round draft pick, Andrew Watson, in the starting lineup. Funnily enough, Korver's production did not drop one bit, as he became a valuable 6th man.

Talking about Watson, he was never expected to be a factor this season as he provided a steady head and stroke from behind the arc. He's still got a lot of work to get his game to the level he wants to, but he's definitely got a future as an NBA player if he can find his niche. The 3rd and final rookie was Ben Tshibaka, who was left undrafted out of college, but the 'Cats saw something special in the kid and took a punt. Whilst Tshibaka has been mostly stranded on the IR this season, he really has shown that he has a future in the NBA as a backup PG.

Willie Green was brought in to backup at SG, but quickly got displaced by rookie Watson in that role. Green showed flashes of brilliance during the season but his inconsistency frustrated the team's coaching staff. Green's role is unknown for next season. Steve Blake was a late signing at PG to backup Arenas. He played sparingly until Arenas with down with injury. When this happenned, Blake stepped up bigtime for the 'Cats and helped the team turn it around one at a time.

Melvin Ely was once again a rock off the bench, backing up at PF and C, and looks to be part of the future in Charlotte. Luke Walton started season out as starting PF, but with the emergence of Guy Dumars, he moved to the bench as a 6th man, where he flourished. However, once Korver moved to the bench, Walton's minutes have slowly dwindled, however he remains a key cog off the bench. Othella Harrington had his moments, but was mostly on team for insurance. As was token big guys, Michael Bradley, and Watson's good mate, Sean Marks.

I think that covers all the players, if I missed anyone out, I apologise to them. If you hadn't already realised, the team finished the season 22-36, which equates to a pro-rated record of 31-51, which I think was a strong effort, especially considering at one point, I was something like 5-20 or something. Hope you all enjoyed the season, the off-season will be coming soonish.

NLSC PLAYER UPDATE (APRIL '06)

This is a monthly section that will highlight different NLSC Players each month. As there is only one NLSC Player at the moment (me :P ), for this season it will just be a short recap of what my guy is doing. Once next season (06/07) rolls over, I'd say that this piece will hold a bit more interest to you guys.

SG- Andrew Watson (The X), 6'2", 220lbs (31st pick in the 2005 NBA Draft by Charlotte)

Image
In the much anticipated The X vs. The Mayor matchup, one player's game went up while the others went down

April was a trying month for Watson as he suffered an injury early in the month. After returning from the injury, Watson seemed a bit out of sync. Perhaps he hit the Rookie Wall that so many talk about. Either way, it's been an exciting season for Watson, as it has exceeded all of his expectations. Let's see if Watson can turn this solid rookie campaign into a fruitful NBA career.

Andrew Watson's 2005/06 Stats:
6.2ppg, 1.6rpg, 2.5apg, 0.63spg
5.21 NBA Efficiency Rating
4.01 Raw Birdie Score
3.39 Weighted Birdie Score

As always, if you wanna see how your player is doing birdie-wise, go to http://www.livedynasty.com/ and check it out. I'll probably incorporate Birdie Scores a little more next season to see how each NLSC player matches up, efficiency-wise.

Nice job, a good closure for the season...

Where did you finish draft-wise, 6th or 7th from the bottom?

23rd in league, so I guess that means I'm like 7th from the bottom....players like Chris Taft, Tiago Splitter, Fran Vazquez and Gerald Green could be available at that pick, so will likely have to grab another big....but we'll see....there's a lack of quality SG's in this draft which is not good :(

yeah I'm glad I finished out the season well....from last season I think the team has gone from pathetic to being mediocre this season....hopefully average next season and then keep on moving up....a gradual progression upwards  good to see your Warriors' record looking very realistic too but you got a good team so it should get better and better as you go along....just need to add a couple of pieces :D

hm, too bad you got eliminated again, but good job anyways on the recaps, and have a good draft

yep, missed out again....I just have to put together a good November and December for once and I'll be aight....yep, cheers....

I've got the last 2 scouting reports completed....I'll post them in the next couple of days....then some awards to hand out (hopefully another ROY :D ) and then playoff coverage....

Ow, c'mon, give Luke a chance at PF... you'll be missing out on the next (undersized) kevin McHale...

from last season I think the team has gone from pathetic to being mediocre this season

I'm kind of in the same groove, leading the Warriors from being mediocre in the last season to pathetic in this one

you got a good team so it should get better and better as you go along....just need to add a couple of pieces

I'll trade for Jerry West first and wing it from there...
