Umm guys i dont know how to measure my verticle jump so i'll tell you what i can do. im 5'8 1/2 (5'9) and if i stand directly under the basket and jump i can reach 1/3 way up the net on a 10 foot rim. any ideas how high my verticle is?? its a normal net found on any highschool basketball hoop. and after i complete the air alert program , any ideas how high i might be able to go?? when i run and jump i can reach 4/5 way up the net , close to rim . anyways , how high can you guys jump ??? please answer my questions though , thanks in advance.

Not sure exactly what my vertical is, I'm about 6"0 and can hang of the normal size ring pretty easily can dunk the ring sometimes but its hard because I can't palm the ball.

All I can tell you is that I jumped higher last year. I think it's my 5kg of f*cking extra weight!
Mon Mar 28, 2005 10:31 am
I really do not know how people measure their vertical.

Here's the method we used in PE/PD/Health during the first couple of years of high school when they charted our various physical abilities for whatever reason:
We'd dip one hand in a bucket of water and stand against a brick wall with our arm above our heads, placing a hand print on the wall at the top of our reach. Then we'd have to jump straight up and place another handprint on the wall having reached the top of our jump. Then we'd measure the distance between the two handprints.

Clever, I get it.
It's the same as measuring the distance between the ground and your feet at the top-most part of your jump!

So Andrew, what's your vertical jump?
Mon Mar 28, 2005 10:43 am
Exactly, though easier to mark. It's not completely accurate but it gives you a good approximation.
Mon Mar 28, 2005 10:44 am
Andrew, don't ignore my question, you know it's there

Here's a similar method (also a gym class method). Take a piece of chalk, stand next to a wall, and, reaching as high as you can while standing, draw a horizontal line on the wall with the chalk. Plant one foot next to the wall while you do it. Keep that foot planted, and jump as high as you can. As you're in the air, draw another line with the chalk as high as you can. You move your non-planted foot if you want when you prepare to jump, but don't take your other foot off the ground until you jump. Finally, measure between the marks for your vertical leap.
Keep in mind that most people can jump higher with a bit of a running start, so you can probably jump higher in actual game settings than your vert leap.

Maybe, maybe not... but I hear Air Alert works for some people. If you want to gain vertical without using Air Alert, do plyometrics.
Mon Mar 28, 2005 12:24 pm
wat is plyometrics , and is it free???
Mon Mar 28, 2005 12:28 pm
Hehe, plyometrics is a fancy name for exercises that uses explosive motion. Here's a FAQ:
http://www.weightsnet.com/Docs/plyometrics.html
There's a bit of information on vertical jumping. If you want more information, you can always Google "plyometrics +vertical"

this is good but they dont give organized excersises . i want to start Rim Jumps (medium intensity) but i dont know . they don't have any organized sets , do you have any idea. like 3 sets of 50 a day or something , give me your thoughts cyanide plzzz.

I'm 5'9 and 144 or 145 pounds and when I'm standing right under the net, I can touch the bottom of the rim on 10 feet. With a full running a start, I can dunk the ball with one hand. Can anybody help me?
Mon Mar 28, 2005 1:44 pm
I forget what my vertical i but I am almost 6'6'' now and I can dunk 1 hand vertically and almost two handed. I am not a 2 foot jumper by any means, I don't know why but when off 1 foot, I can do a lot more dunks!

Do you think gaining weight would help or hinder you jump higher? I'm 5'9" 1/2 about 134 pounds and I just barely miss the bottom of the rim. However my friend is the same height but bigger (I guess maybe 140-148) and he's also older (17 1/2, I'm 16) and he can hang on the rim. Maybe the extra weight gives you more power to jump off of?
P.S. oh yea theres another guy that's 18 and extremely buff (same height also) and I don't know how much but all of his bulk could be 160 pounds and he can definitely dunk.
Mon Mar 28, 2005 2:27 pm
hey im either 5'6" or 5'7", havent measured in longest time but I can touch bottom of rim, well I don't kno where I can touch now because I barely played any basketball for past 2 years but before that, that was how high I was getting and then I was 5'5"
Mon Mar 28, 2005 3:13 pm
Weight may help or hinder.. if the extra weight is muscle, then that's fine, but if it's fat, then no. The key is the explosiveness. The quicker and powerfully you can jump, the higher you can go.

That site is full of plyometric exercises used to increase vertical leap.

Excellent site, Jae. "combines weight training with plyometrics" <-- perfect!

"Jumpsoles" is a better system, I think. I'm 6'1'' and I do 180s without any problems, sometimes even 360s.

I posted through the Quick Reply and jumped back to the board index, so I didn't see it. My vertical leap is nothing special, especially these days - probably about 22, 24 inches with my ankles the way they are at the moment. Hardly impressive.
