Update will be coming in an hour or so for the 3-point shootout.

Steve Nash Rains Threes, Takes Title
Nash Shows Off With Another Trophy

Round 1 Results | Round 2 Results

Nash crowned champion again after winning Skills Challenge

DENVER, Feb. 19 (Ticker) -- Steve Nash burned one of the underdogs in the last round revealing a hot hand. Nash only had to make 15 shots in the final round to capture the Shootout on Saturday night, defeating Golden State Warriors guard Mike Dunleavy in the finals. Not noted for his long-range marksmanship, but for his ball-handling and passing ability, Nash put on a dazzling display late that brought back visions of the legendary Tim Legler and Craig Hodges. A point guard for the Phoenix Suns, Nash went second in the finals after Dunleavy, the sharpshooter of the Warriors, scored 14 points making all five of his money balls, but only getting four regular balls to go down.

Nash had 13 points through his first three racks and laying off for the last two, only making six to finish with 19 and take home the top prize of $25,000. "I felt like I was shooting a little too fast (in the second round) I tried to slow it down and I started to get hot and I got it going,'' said Nash who won the Playstation Skills Challenge earlier in the evening. Cheered on by teammates Jason Richardson and Michael Pietrus, Dunleavy settled for second as it was his first time in the contest. "I was just worried about Reggie and Allen, but then Richardson got hot and Miller and Allen were eliminated," Dunleavy said."

Dunleavy also has the confidence that he will capture this event down the road. "I'm going to win this thing one of these years," he said. "It's going to happen. I don't know which year but it's going to happen." Reggie Miller, who was the oldest in the contest, the shooting guard of the Indiana Pacers, was a disappointment in the contest only scoring nine in the first round and getting no money balls. "I felt like I should've done better, and I knew that I disappointed alot of people because I was a favorite to win," Miller said. "Many props go out to Nash because he heated up. "He's a good shooter. Hopefully I'll see him next year if I get back invited."

Nash and Dunleavy made the finals by scoring 23 and 22 in the first round. The 2001 winner of the 3-Point Shootout, Ray Allen of the Seattle SuperSonics, scored 16 in the 1st round and came in 4th place. Cuttino Mobley of the Sacramento Kings finished in last place with just eight points in the first round, while Baron Davis and Brent Barry scored 13 and 14.

Steve Nash Q&A

Feb. 19, 2005 -- After watching Steve Nash hoist the trophy for the Playstation Skills Challenge, Steve Nash wasn't going to be satisfied with one trophy and let the opportunity to get in on the action slip away. Nash drained 19 shots in the final round and hit three-of-five money balls for a final round score of 19 points to defeat Mike Dunleavy Jr. in the contest. Here's what Steve Nash had to say after the victory.

Q. So, things are going pretty well for the Phoenix Suns?

Steve Nash: Yeah, definitely we're getting off to a good start for the All-Star.

Q. Did you feel good going into the final round?

Nash: Yeah, I was glad, you know, to make it to the second round and I was the high-point man for the first round which really got me going.

Q. Any prediction on the Slam Dunk contest?

Nash: (Amare Stoudemire) All day long, all day long.

Q. It's been a good year for the Suns obviously, and you making the transition from Dallas, what does this mean to your season?

Nash: I mean, this is just -- I think this is just perks for us. These are just bonuses in us having a great weekend, having a good time and I think it's a tribute to us playing so well together and us being so unselfish with each other, because that's why we are where we are now.

DENVER, Feb.19 -- Three out of the four contestants in the dunk contest are high schoolers. Amare Stoudemire has shined this season on the league-leading Phoenix Suns as they brought Steve Nash on board to run the point position. Half of Stoudemires' points are dunks that come from assists given by Nash. Stoudemire may have the least amount of chance to win due to his height, but he said that he has a few things that he will pull out tonight.

Lebron James finally accepted an invitation to the dunk contest this season after declining during his rookie campaign. He is known for his amazing hops and most people say that he will be the one to win the whole thing. He is also the league leading MVP canidate for the first half of the season. Tracy McGrady was acquired from the Houston Rockets during the off-season and he leads the team in scoring and assist. McGrady has been in the contest before with his cousin Vince Carter in 2000. He has the experience, so he will know what type of atmosphere he will expect tonight.

Manu Ginobili is the smallest guy out there standing at 6'6". He is also the only european in the contest. He has dunked on quite a few people in his short NBA-career and has the ability to twist his body in mid-air. Expect to see him make some noise tonight and not go down easily.

I don't know, it doesn't seem very realistic to have guys like Lebron and Tmac in it.

I think it would be cooler if you had Josh Smith or something in it instead.

if i could switch the dunkers, i would, but i can't. i was happy with the selections because at least there wasn't players like kg or duncan or someone like that in the contest. i know mcgrady has been in the contest before, people really wanted james in the dunk contest and stoudemire was in it this year. ginobili is the only selection i really didnt like because i wouldnt picture him in the contest.

European Ginobili New Dunk King
Underdog Is Almost Perfect

Image
Emanuel Ginobili showing off his new piece of hardware

DENVER, Feb. 19 (Ticker) -- Emanuel Ginobili showed fans tonight that Europeans got hops as well. Ginobili, the starting guard of the San Antonio Spurs, put on a scintillating display Saturday night to capture the Sprite Rising Stars Slam Dunk. From using Vince Carter arm in the rim dunk in his repertoire to just relying on his sheer body movement with 360 alley oops, the 6-6 Ginobili dazzled the five judges that included the legendary Julius Erving. "I think I surprised a lot of people," Ginobili said. “They didn't know that I was going to do some things they never seen but I wasn’t going to embarrase myself, that’s for sure."

After scoring a 47 on his initial dunk in the first round, Ginobili was almost perfect the rest of the way getting two 50‘s and one 45 on his last dunk. He scored 192 of a possible 200 points. Ginobili’s best dunk came with some action camera assistance. On Ginobili’s first dunk of the final round, he stood at the top of the key. Ginobili softly kicked the ball with his leg behind his back to the camera flying near the teletron and as the ball bounced back to him, he grabbed the ball and finished with a 180 reverse slam, bringing a roar from the sellout crowd at the Pepsi Center. Before that, Ginobili perfected his last dunk in the first round. He used the big teletron screen on the left side, took high flight and finished with another reverse 180 slam, clearly putting the pressure on the 6-10 Amaré Stoudemire of the Phoenix Suns in the last round.

Stoudemire scored a 50 on his first dunk of the finals, which was clearly the best dunk of the contest. He threw the ball behind his back, over his head in the corner, caught the ball in mid-air and took it between his legs backwards to finish it with a reverse jam. After Ginobili pulled his dunk in the first round that gave him a 50, it was all up to Amare to try and score high on his final attempt. There was question that Stoudemire’s dunk should’ve received a high score than Ginobili’s dunk as Ginobili put his arm in the rim such as what Vince Carter did in the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest. Stoudemire threw the ball off the shot clock and reverse wind-milled it in that only received a 42 from the judges. "I think I brought a lot of creativity to the dunk contest tonight," Stoudemire said. "That's what the NBA needs. "I think it's one they'll play for years. In my opinion, it was one of the best dunk contests as there we‘re a lot of new things shown tonight."

Eliminated in the first round were Cleveland Cavaliers superstar Lebron James (93) and Houston Rockets superstar guard Tracy McGrady (94). Lebron, who was the fan favorite wasn‘t trying to really impress anyone he said. “I‘m still trying to recover from my ankle injury I had this season and I didn‘t want to mess it up even worse,” James said. I had some pretty nice dunks, but it just wasn‘t enough to get me to the final round.”
