GRIZZLIES VS. SUNS
American West Arena, Phoenix, 7:00 p.m., PST

TV, radio: FSAZ; KTAR 620
Records: Grizzlies, 17-11; Suns, 22-3.

KEY MATCHUP: AMARE STOUDEMIRE VS. PAU GASOL
Gasol is the leading scorer on one of the deepest teams in the league averaging 17.8ppg. He is averaging a career-high in rebounds, pulling down 11.5 a game. With the way Stoudemire has been playing, it will be hard for Pau to overpower him. It will be Pau's quickness against Stoudemire's athleticism.

INSIDE THE GRIZZLIES
The Grizzlies have won 6 of their last 7 games and every since acquiring Mike Fratello as their head coach, they are 10-2. Jason Williams will be out for tonight's game with a bone spur in his foot. The injury occured against the Clippers on December 19th. Earl Watson will have the starting PG spot in tonight's game.

INSIDE THE SUNS
Phoenix can reach an all-time high 10-game winning streak if they can beat the Memphis Grizzlies. Stoudemire continues to shine for the Suns as he scored 28 points against the Nuggets on Monday. Steve Nash is leading the league in scoring with 9.2apg, while injured Jason Williams trails him with 7.5apg for 2nd place.

Suns Roll on Grizzlies
The red-hot Suns are now winners of 10 straight

PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- Amare Stoudemire, Shawn Marion and the red-hot Phoenix Suns proved to be too much for the road-weary Memphis Grizzlies. Stoudemire had 24 points and 13 rebounds and Marion scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Suns extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 97-85 victory over the Grizzlies, who played their fourth road games in five days.

The Suns (22-3) became the first team in NBA history to win 10 games in row after losing at least 50 the previous season and are off to the league's best start since Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls opened the 1994-95 campaign 41-3. "Not many teams in this league get to win 10 games in a row, not many players can say they have won 10 in a row and its a great accomplishment," Steve Nash said. "I think our team should be proud, but I think our team should see signs of complacency and we need to get a little more focused." Memphis took its largest lead, 65-60, with 2:27 remaining in the third quarter on back-to-back jumpers by Earl Watson. But Marion scored the next five points on a 19-foot jumper and a 3-point play and Stoudemire hit three free throws to give Phoenix a 72-71 lead entering the final period.

Stoudemire and Marion carried the momentum, combining for 14 points in a 17-6 run that made it 89-77 with just under four minutes to go. "They test you defensively every way," Memphis coach Mike Fratello said. "From a defensive standpoint they are a nightmare to think about. My hat's off to them, they've gotten off to a great start." Stoudemire hit two easy buckets around a 3-pointer by Casey Jacobsen before adding a jumper to seal the game for the Suns. "This was a game we felt like we should get a win," Stoudemire said. "We know we can go on runs but we have to prepare ourselves for the better teams. We need to start off the first quarter with a run and then end the game with a run."

Posey sparked the Grizzlies' rally in the 3rd quarter, scoring seven of his 15 points and grabbing two rebounds down the stretch as Memphis gained a lead at the end of the quarter. "It's the NBA," Marion said. "Everyone's going to make a run. It's just how we handle it. When we start getting a little lead, we need to put our foot down and make another run for ourselves." Nash, who had 20 and 11 assists help keep the Suns on their feet late in the game. Pau Gasol scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Grizzlies.

By RUSS BENGTSON

Lebron's Cavs stand 14-12, 5th place in the Eastern Conference and 2nd place in the Central Division. Uncharted territory. His averages of 28.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, 7 assists and 2.8 steals are all substantial improvements on the Rookie of The Year numbers he posted last season, as is his 48 percent from the field. An All-Star starting spot is all but assured. But, practice. We’re talking about practice. “I like practice,” LeBron says, turning down the TV. “Practice makes perfect, and if you can get guys around you that are gonna practice perfect with you, it can help your team translate that into game situations.”

That team around him now is mostly new. When Carlos Boozer chose to take his Mailman-in-training game to Utah for what amounted to a $28 million bonus, the Cavs had to scramble to reload. They brought in young bigs Drew Gooden and Robert Traylor to make up the rebounding difference, and Finals-hardened vets like Scott Williams, Eric Snow and Lucious Harris to provide some much-needed playoff experience. A couple months in, it’s easy to tell who’s influenced whom more. “He has a knack to take over practice,” Traylor says of LeBron, “and do some things that—” Tractor pauses, at a rare loss for words “—you don’t expect guys to do. I’ve played with a lot of good players, and I’d say right now he’s probably by far the best.” But the respect has gone both ways. “I think Scott, Lucious, Eric Snow, Tractor Traylor, really brought the key components we need to our team to really help me elevate my game to a new high,” LeBron says. “Those guys come to practice every day and work hard. And that’s key, because I’m a practice player. I translate practice to the game. I don’t just come to the game and play, I love practicin’. Then you see guys working hard like that, it’s just helpful.”

So yeah, he’s not Allen Iverson. Maybe being 10 years younger (and tight-end big) means he can take more of a pounding on an off-day and still go 48 the next night—the 26 points he scored four days after receiving a broken cheekbone courtesy of that Mutombo elbow should speak volumes to that. But the differences get deeper. Ask Snow, who played with AI for years: “AI’s more of a scorer, and he’s gonna score, he’s gonna give it to you every night from a scoring aspect. Meaning he’s a 30-point threat every night, where I don’t think that’s LeBron’s best part of his game. I think he’s the best when he’s giving you 20 numbers and 7 assists, and 7-8 rebounds, just being a li’l more well-rounded.”

It's late in the game, and Tim Duncan's team has the ball. For as long as the basketball public has been watching, that means Timmy gets the ball. Simple, huh? About as simple as deciphering his story, right? Boring guy, boring game; next subject. Not quite. Yes, endgame possessions of a Tim Duncan team still go to Tim Duncan. But where he is when he gets that ball has changed, just like the player has changed.

At Wake Forest, it was the low blocks. TD, using his 6-11, 260-pound frame, which was bigger (and by his senior year, older) than pretty much any decent opponent's, would stick his butt into the defender, raise his right arm firmly as if auditioning for a photo shoot in the low-post textbook, then get the ball and go to work. His strength, touch and knowledge of how to operate were usually too much for any one, two or even three men to stop, and he'd drop-step or power up to get the bucket. As you may remember, Duncan was essentially unstoppable by the end of his time at Wake, picking up the National Player of the Year award after averaging 21 ppg on 61 percent shooting, along with 3.3 blocks and a nation-leading 14.7 rebounds. "His game," said then-Wake coach Dave Odom, "is on a different level than anyone else's."

Duncan's San Antonio Spurs are holding a 23-5 record which is 2nd best in the Western Conference. Remarkable improvements to an already dominant game, and he makes it sound simple. "I think that's what makes players what they are, a willingness to push themselves and a feeling, every night, that you have to prove what you can do," Duncan adds. "I want it for myself," Duncan says, not understanding how there could be confusion on this matter. "I'm a very competitive person and I don't like feeling bad on the court. I don't like feeling like there's something I can't do, and I don't like feeling uncomfortable. So, I like to practice, watch a lot of video and make sure I get my repetitions in so when I get in situations on the court I never feel bad or look stupid."

Both of these superstars love to practice their game and they love to make their teammates better. If you want to be successful in basketball, look to these guys to teach you everything you need. One is very young and is playing like a NBA-Vet, while the other one has already won 2 championships and is on the verge of another one.

RAPTORS VS. SUNS
American West Arena, Phoenix, 6:00 p.m., PST

TV, radio: FSAZ; KTAR 620
Records: Raptors, 15-13; Suns, 23-3.

KEY MATCHUP: JOE JOHNSON VS. JALEN ROSE
Tonight's matchup will be very interesting. Jalen Rose is the type of player that may have a 20-point night, but he attends to allow the person guardhimg to score 30 points. It will be interesting to see how well Johnson plays tonight. Rose is averaging 14.2ppg and 4.4apg for the Raptors this season.

INSIDE THE RAPTORS
Toronto acquired Alonzo Mourning, Eric Williams and Aaron Williams in the trade that sent Vince Carter to the Nets. So far, the trade has worked out pretty well for the Raptors who hold a 15-13 record. Eric Williams and Mourning average a combined 22.2ppg and 15.2rpg.

INSIDE THE SUNS
The Suns are at a season-high 10 game winning streak. Stoudemire may be on his way to be coming the Western Conference Player of the Month if he can continue his huge play. Phoenix have the best FG% in the league, shooting 49% and are also no.1 in the league in 3-point percentage shooting 40%.

Stoudemire Helps Suns Keep Winning Streak Alive
Stoudemire grabbed 19 of the Suns 53 rebounds against the Raptors

PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- The Phoenix Suns didn‘t bite, and Amare Stoudemire made sure they didn’t break, keeping their winning streak alive. Stoudemire scored 33 points to help the Phoenix Suns win their 11th straight contest with a 109-93 victory over the Toronto Raptors. The Suns are off to a franchise-best 24-3 start and tied their second-longest winning streak, trailing only a 14-game streak set December 1-30, 1992.

Phoenix lead throughout the game with their biggest lead at 20-points. "We always play hard when we are down by 20," Raptors coach Sam Mitchell said. "You can't keep getting down by 20. You have to play like you're being embarrassed to start the game. For whatever reason, we get down by 20 and our pride is challenged and we try play hard." Stoudemire, who had a season-high 34 points a few games back, scored six in an 18-5 run that gave the Suns an 8-point lead at the end of the 3rd quarter. "We kind of took it easy for a couple of minutes," Stoudemire said. "That is something we have to work on. We can't have those type of letdowns. I told Nash it is time to pick it up. I was ready to do that and Steve read me and gave it to me."

Shawn Marion had one of the Suns' just three 3-pointers during the outburst and finished with 26 points, while Leandro Barbosa tied a season-high with 17 points and dished out 6 assists, as the Suns raised their record to 11-1 against Eastern Conference opponents. Jalen Rose led the Toronto Raptors with 26 points and Chris Bosh added 24 and 7 rebounds for the Raptors, who fall to 15-14 for the season. Phoenix’s bench outscored Toronto’s 26-11. "They kept coming," Rose said. "What is impressive about them is everyone knows their role and Nash along with Barbosa keeps them happy. They have shooters like Richardson and Johnson, and Stoudemire is a beast."

"I can't complain too much. We are 24-3," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "It is human nature to play in spurts. But I think our guys are smart enough to know that when we go on the road or play certain teams, we have to put them away. We talked about coming out and having a good fast start, but we had spurts and runs."

SUNS VS. SPURS
SBC Center, San Antonio, 6:30 p.m., PST

TV, radio: FSAZ; KTAR 620
Records: Suns, 24-3; Spurs, 23-5.

KEY MATCHUP: SUNS FRONT-LINE VS. TIM DUNCAN
Duncan can change the game in many ways. It will be up to the players like Stoudemire, Marion, Outlaw and Richardson to trap and force Duncan to make bad decisions. Duncan averages 3.9apg, so the Suns must recover quickly on the Spurs outside shooters. Expect to see alot of switches on defense to prevent one on one matchups between Marion and Duncan.

INSIDE THE SUNS
The first thing that comes to mind when you see the Suns is no.32. Amare Stoudemire in the last 4 games is averaging 28.5ppg and 11.5rpg. His play has been key for the Suns down the stretch at the end of December.

INSIDE THE SPURS
San Antonio holds the no.1 spot in the NBA.com's Power Rankings. This game will decide whether the Suns will get that no.1 spot or the Spurs will hold on to it. The Spurs have a deep team with 5 players averaging double figures and 2 players averaging 7ppg or more.

Spurs Stop Suns’ Streak
Stoudemire’s big night didn’t help the Suns overcome the Spurs deficit

Nash fouled out late in the 4th quarter just scoring 7 points

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (AP) -- Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns found it a lot more difficult to run against Tony Parker and the San Antonio Spurs. Parker scored 22 points in 43 minutes and thoroughly outplayed Nash as the Spurs snapped the Suns' 11-game winning streak with an emphatic 122-99 victory. "I knew I had to have a lot of energy and go back at him because if you don't go back at Steve Nash, he is going to beat you every time," Parker said. "I thought in the second half, he was a little bit tired. It was a big challenge for me. Steve Nash is the best point guard in the league and is playing great. That's why you play in the NBA against the best, I love it." Phoenix, which entered the contest with a league-best 24-3 mark and 20 wins in its last 21 games, took a beaten in the 1st quarter losing 39-25 38% shooting. Then the Suns fell behind by 16, at halftime and in the 2nd half, Nash failed to score a single point.

"They scored 39 in the first quarter and that's uncharacteristic for us," Phoenix coach Mike D’ Antoni said. "I thought they set a good tone aggressiveness-wise, physical play and really going at it offensively and picking it up on the defensive end from that point on." Meanwhile, Duncan scored 13 points in the second quarter and 10 in the third before sitting out nearly all of the fourth with the win in hand. Duncan connected on 15-of-22 shots for the Spurs, who made 53 percent (45-of-85) overall. "They just kicked our butts," Nash said. “We didn't show a lot of poise or focus tonight. But maybe that's good for this team, to face a tough challenge like this and learn from it. "We got embarrassed, but we can use that positively. We can make this a turning point in our season. We can learn that we are not a finished product and there are a lot of things to work on and good things we can build on."

Barry collected 23 points and seven assists for San Antonio, which improved to 24-5 for the season. "It was a huge game for us," Duncan said. "We shot the ball a lot better than they did. You don't want to say it's a statement game, but we are excited about the win." Amare Stoudemire went off in the game scoring a season-high 43 points and grabbing 13 rebounds to lead the Suns. Shawn Marion was limited to eight points and Steve Nash seven points. "We just need to play some better defense, that's all," Stoudemire said. "We struggled defensively. This team, we can score all night long, but we have to man up on defense. This might be good for us. It's never fun to lose, but you have to look back at games like this and correct the mistakes you made next game." Phoenix, which entered the contest averaging a league-high 107.6 points, had not lost by more than five this season. "We just ran into a great team tonight," Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We didn't do a good job containing Tony Parker on the pick-and-roll. They are a championship team that did what they needed to do tonight.
