actually there is such a rule dk... that states you cant post up for more then 5 seconds... I have no idea what it is called... but it rarely happens in the nba when they stop someone for that... mainly because all the big players are getting double teamed and are passing, I aint sure if they are passing because they are double teamed or because of the rule.

Yes, there is such a rule. But it is very rarely called (if it ever was called already)...

Section XVI-Five-Second Back-to-the-Basket Violation
An offensive player in his frontcourt below the free throw line extended shall not be permitted to dribble with his back or side to the basket for more than five seconds.
The count ends when (1) the player picks up the ball, (2) dribbles above the free throw line extended or (3) a defensive player deflects the ball away.

In other leagues (but not yet in the nba, as far as i know), there is this other rule... "ball hogging". It is aimed at discouraging teams on using too much one-on-one plays by penalizing a player who "hogs" or holds the ball for more than 5 seconds.

Well I have never seen it caled and it is true for Live too, there is no way someone can post up for 5 sec without losing the ball in Live so I don't see what the point is.

Actually ball hogging rule is present in the NBA. It's just that players are often too smart nowadays and they avoid it. It usually happens in the NBA when a player is double teamed and caught off guard and stopped and could not dribble anymore and is hesistant to pass, in which case he hogs the ball for 5 secs and the ref whistles. (I saw it happen to Reggie Miller once)

Actually, it's a FIBA rule, so most international/amateur leagues apply it. If you are closely guarded, you cannot hold the ball for more than 5 seconds (you will have to either pass, shoot, or dribble the ball so as not to get penalized).

Art. 40. Closely Guarded Player
A closely guarded player (within one normal step) who is holding the ball shall pass, shoot, roll or dribble the ball within five (5) seconds. An infraction of this article is a violation.

The NCAA, they have a stricter version of this rule. Aside from holding the ball, you also cannot DRIBBLE the ball for more than 5 seconds while being closely defended. This is defenitely more difficult because you have no other option but to give up the ball (either to pass or to shoot).

But I'm not sure if it is being applied in the NBA already. I don't think it is (not yet, anyway).

well i have seen it called in the NBA..although i agree..very rarely and hesitantly

and it IS possible to back your way in for longer than 5 seconds in Live 2003..not often but still possible and should still be in the game just for the sake of having complete rules.
