Hornets Wrap Up 12 Days Of Giving

New Orleans - With owner George Shinn and his wife Denise leading the way, the New Orleans Hornets completed this year's 12 Days of Giving initiative by adopting two families in-need, as identified by the Housing Authority of New Orleans.

"We're so blessed to have the opportunity to help so many people this holiday season", said Shinn. "From the luncheon with 1,400 seniors in attendance to the 200 complete turkey dinners we gave to residents at the St. Bernard Housing Development, this has truly been a season of giving."
The partnership between the Hornets and the Housing Authority of New Orleans has taken center stage during the 12 Days of Giving, with half of the team's major donations and events benefiting HANO residents. For the final donation, Hornets staff members made cash donations to help purchase some big-ticket items for the two adopted families.

On Christmas Eve, the Shinn's delivered to the home of Sheila Augustine a new sofa, love seat, and chair to go along with a new 32" television set, toys, and Christmas dinner for the seven grandchildren that she is raising in her St. Bernard Housing Development apartment.

From there, the Shinn's traveled to the Westbank home of Ramona Smith, where they delivered new beds, comforters, and sheet sets to go along with a new washer and dryer, gifts, and a complete turkey dinner for the nine children she is raising in her Fischer Housing Development apartment.

Hornets - Read To Achieve

The Read to Achieve program is a NBA initiative, in which all 29 teams participate, designed to promote adults reading with kids and online literacy. It is a year-round program designed to help young people develop a life-long love for reading that reaches an estimated 50 million children a year. Read to Achieve is the most extensive educational outreach initiative in the history of professional sports.

Under the Read to Achieve umbrella, the New Orleans Hornets focus on the following programs:
Kindergarten through fifth graders participate in the Books & Bugs Reading Program
Middle school students are involved with writing seminars through the Heart and Sole Program
Ninth through 12th graders prepare for the Hoops for Higher Education Scholarship
Students are also recognized for their reading achievements through the Outstanding Reader Program

Forms for the Books & Bugs Reading program and the Outstanding Reader program have been mailed to schools throughout the 10-parish region in and around New Orleans. If you would like to participate in either program, please contact your school administrator to see if forms are available.

As a part of the overall Read To Achieve program, the Hornets will hold Reading Timeouts every month throughout schools in the New Orleans region.

yea he never asked me about it and i didn't want no one to take one of my ideas from my dynasty since i haven't seen it nowhere else. i dont think it's right to do that especially since you did basically the exact same way i did it by putting your community part and then the read to achieve. i hate when people do that, while they can still come up with another idea. its not that big of a deal, but putting something like that in your dynasty knowing i had it kinda pisses me off.

WASHINGTON (Ticker) - The New Orleans Hornets will try to win their season-opener when they face the Washington Wizards on Tuesday.

In the offseason, the Hornets had added few players, like Lee Nailon, Junior Harrington, Chris Andersen and rookie JR Smith.

In their last game of the season, the Hornets defeated the Wizards 94-78, with 26 points of Baron Davis and 23 points and 14 rebounds of Jamaal Magloire; and David West chipped in 11 (5-7 FGs). New Orleans shot a .451 from the field. For the Wizards, Jarvis Hayes and Jared Jeffries posted 15 and 13 respectively. Off-the-bench, Etan Thomas added 16. The team finished the season with a 41-41 (.500) record.

The Hornets got defeated by the Miami Heat in the first round in the playoffs in a 7-game round.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 (Ticker) -- Byron Scott had to be happy with the way the New Orleans Hornets shared the ball.

Baron Davis had 29 points and 10 assists as the Hornets won their season-opener with a 101-88 decision against the Washington Wizards.

The Hornets played their first regular-season contest as a member of the Western Conference since 1990.

Gilbert Arenas scored the Wizards' first 17 points and he didn't score after that.

PJ Brown (10 rebounds), Matt Freije (3/3 3FGs) and JR Smith (6 rebounds) each had 12 points.

"We had a game under our belt," Scott said.

"It's been a fun ride so far," Davis admitted. "I love this team."

Antawn Jamison, offseason adquisition from Dallas, posted 19 points and 8 rebounds.

Off-the-bench, George Lynch added 9 points and 4 rebounds. For Washington, Anthony Peeler scored 8 points (2-3 3FGs).

"We still need a bunch of little things that we need to clean up to make ourselves a better team," Jamal Mashburn said. He was seeing the game in the bench in street clothes. He will be out for all the season. "That's about it, we're going to be a good team."

Showcasing a brand new starting lineup to start the season, New Orleans got a beating third-quarter by their starters, beating the Washington Wizards, 101-88.

Baron Davis had 29 points, five rebounds and ten assists.

In addition to Davis' performance, the Hornets got solid efforts from their center, PJ Brown, with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Hornets had won six straight openers with this win over Washington on Tuesday.
