Just curious about something guys, how is it the Aussies don't get too many NBA games or get it late, yet, there are so many NBA fans down under. Wait, forget that, how are there so many on this site?

I had no idea that NBA Live was that popular overseas but mainly in Australia. For instance, I'm the mod of the NBA Live section at another site and even there the Aussies are the main posters. Anybody have any theories as to why this phenomenon occurs? I'm so curious to know.

I think alot of us got addicted to the NBA back in the early 90's because that's when the NBA was shown a fair bit on free-to-air television. These days the NBA is only on paytv, and for those of us who dont have it we get absolutely no basketball coverage whatsoever. Even our own national league isn't shown on free tv. The people who did get hooked on the NBA, stayed hooked over the years despite the lack of coverage. Most Australians get their current NBA knowledge from like NBA.com and things like that, reading boxscores/game reports etc purely because we dont get the opportunity to see the players so it's difficult for us to judge on their playing style.

As far as NBA Live goes, I think that's the same reasons as the above, and curiousity.

Sounds like a win-win situation to me. #2 please. :)

That makes 3 of us. I dont watch any games outside of Raptors games unless its the playoffs. Or what I could do is just install Live 2005 on to my cpu and then just rename the nba2005 files to basketball.

Yea thats all true. It really sux how we can't even see our OWN national league games on TV. Its crazy. We have to pay for everything, and not everyone can afford it. I got into NBA back in the early 90's, from playing Live and from playing basketball myself as a younger dude. I used to sneak into bars and stuff where I could see nba games before it was legal for me to do that. Its sad not seeing your favourite players on your team ever play!!!!
At the moment i get some friends with austar to tape games and givem em to me... but thats usually way after i know the result :)

I should point out that cable/payTV over here is pretty expensive.. like it's not as freely available as it is in the states because of the high price of it

Really? How much would you say it is a month if you had to equate it to U.S. dollars? I'd say the average cable bill here goes for approximately $50.00 a month.

Here's the prices for Foxtel...

Platinum: $111 US initial payment + installation, $66 US per month after that

Basic: $111 US initial payment + installation, $55 US per month after that

Digital Basic (very very very basic :? ... no basketball too): $90 US initial payment + installation, $34 US after that

The main probs are the installation and the initial payment, and also the fact that they seem to think having Hallmark channel and rubbish like that makes up for not putting more decent channels onto the cheaper plans

I'm not sure I could ever give up watching the Kings in the playoffs. Not much can beat that. But I actually did consider chosing Live, which is a lot more then a lot of you can say. At first I was leaning towards Live, but missing Kings playoffs would just be too much. I feel so lucky now that I don't actually have to make this decision :D .

i take 2. i can always play espn until live 06 comes out. and espn is only 20 bucks. it'd be hard, but i can survive without a dunk contest for one more year.

I'd choose number 1. I am totally down with playing NBA Live 2005 all the time, and checking our sportscenter for highlights and info. I have more fun playing myself, than watching others play. By far I choose option number 1 ... But playoffs and finals are another different thing  ... So I'm glad that this is just an hypothetical situation. This year I'll be watching all of the Bulls games and before and after each one I'll be playing NBA Live 2005
bulls fan till i die.

That's about the same as the USA, for almost all cable companies, ESPN and TNT show 4-5 games every week on basic cable, and ABC shows a game every week on antennae broadcasts, plus the local channels that depend on where you live (where I live there are like 20 Wizards game every season shown on antennae and the rest of the Wizard's games are all on a local basic cable channel. In some areas all the games are on antennae, and some areas have them all on basic cable.)

I'm not sure how many NBA games we get a week on cable, but generally it's not alot.

Also, the average wage people are paid over here is lower than the USA... last time I checked anyway, it might've changed but I doubt it.

Gotta go with #2, man. I love the NBA Live games and play the living hell out of them for the first two months after I buy them, but the real NBA is a much bigger part of my life than the Live series. I watch 95% of the Houston Rockets games plus an extra two or three games a week during the regular season. And I am glued to the TV or at the arena during the playoffs. Last year broke such a long playoff drought for the Rockets, and with T-Mac this season, I'm pretty damned excited about the Rockets season.

The only way I'd give up watching basketball for a full season is if I was in a freaking coma.
