2017 Draft Preview: Chicago Sharks
Image
With nearly the entire team coming off the books, David Blatt has a lot of options to choose from

2016/17 Finish: 33-49
2017 Draft Picks: 2nd, 32nd, 52nd, 57th

Pre-Draft 2017/18 Projected Starters
PG. Patrick Mills (FA)
SG. Gerald Green (FA)
SF. Thabo Sefolosha (FA)
PF. Taj Gibson
C. Boban Marjanovic

Key Reserves
Yi Jianlian (FA)
JaVale McGee (TO)
Jeff Green (FA)
Roy Hibbert (FA)

What the Sharks do well

As an expansion franchise, the Sharks surprised a lot of people with how well they played, as they competed hard in every game and caused a lot of upsets as a result. One reason for this is due to their dominance in the paint, with three starting-caliber centers in Boban Marjanovic, JaVale McGee, and Roy Hibbert, as well as 6-9 power forward Taj Gibson and 7 foot stretch big Yi Jianlian anchoring the paint, blocking shots and grabbing rebounds for the offensively challenged Sharks.

Chicago led the league in rebounds the past season, and their dominance inside is also matched by their above average defense. The Sharks generate plenty of turnovers and that defensive ability has helped them get a lot of transition baskets throughout the team’s inaugural season.

What the Sharks need

Consistency at the point guard position is an area of major concern for the Sharks moving forward. Although he played very well and very effectively while he’s on the floor, incumbent starter Patty Mills suffered a myriad of ankle injuries that kept him out for the majority of the season, appearing in only 36 of the team’s 82 games in 2017. This uncertainty at what is arguably the most important position in the modern game is part of the reason why Chicago has been dismal on the offensive end this past season.

Outside scoring is another area of concern for Chicago, as they shot just 31.3% from deep in 2017, with players such as Ty Lawson, R.J Hunter, Shabazz Muhammad, and Briante Weber shooting below 30%, and only three players shooting above 35%, this is a part of the game that the Sharks must reinforce if they are to be successful in this era.

Best Fit for Chicago

It certainly is a great draft to have high-end pick in. Lots of good point guards, quality wing guys like Tatum and Jackson and the unique prospect of Lauri Markkanen. Good luck (Y)

Definitely got very lucky in the lottery there, wealth of options to choose from at #2!

Sharks Exercise Option On McGee, Decline Others
Image

The Chicago Sharks announced today the team has exercised its $1.01M team option for center JaVale McGee. By exercising McGee’s option, he will remain under contract with the Sharks throughout the 2017-18 season.

McGee (7-0, 270), was signed by the Sharks in mid-December last season, and made quite an impact as soon as he was given an opportunity to play, averaging 6.1 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 17 minutes per game over 45 games played (8 as a starter). McGee led the team in field goal percentage (.591) and during his time as a starter filling in for the injured Boban Marjanovic, had back to back games where he set new career highs in rebounds for a single game, including a franchise record of 23 rebounds against the New Orleans Pelicans on the 9th of March.

The Sharks have also announced that they have declined the team options on guards Joseph Young, Briante Weber, and R.J. Hunter, making them unrestricted free agents.

2017 NBA Draft: Live Pick-By-Pick Analysis
Brooklyn, New York -- Good evening and welcome to the live coverage of the 2017 NBA draft, provided by yours truly here at Sharks.com. We will provide on the spot reactions and analysis for all 64 picks as the draft unfolds. Stayed tuned to this space as we will be updating this file regularly as picks are filed and trades are confirmed.

The Chicago Sharks owns selections #2, #32, #52, and #57 tonight, and having been an expansion franchise last season, they are first time participants in this annual event.

The Orlando Magic are on the clock with the first overall selection…

1st Round: Lottery Picks (1-16)

1. Orlando Magic select PG Markelle Fultz (Washington)

Those of us who were wondering if Orlando was going to take somebody else or trade down in favour of Elfrid Payton have their answers now. Fultz can play either guard spot well and score in bunches, and more importantly, is the most likely future star in this draft class. A clear choice at No. 1.

2. Chicago Sharks select SF Josh Jackson (Kansas)

A bit of a surprise as everybody was thinking either a point guard or Duke’s Jayson Tatum for Chicago at No. 2, and as this pick will go down in the record books as the first ever amateur draft pick for the Sharks, they better hope he pans out well. Jackson is a bit raw on the offensive end, but he’s an incredible athlete that can definitely contribute on the defensive end, and that allows him to complement Gerald Green quite well on the wings.

3. Sacramento Kings select PG Lonzo Ball (UCLA)

A lot of good prospects to choose from, but the Kings have ultimately decided that Ball’s unique talents are what have been missing in Sacramento. They desperately need a point guard and certainly got one. Next step is to figure out how to stop his rather loud father from being bigger than the team.

4. Boston Celtics select PG DeAaron Fox (Kentucky)

Everybody was expecting the Celtics to take Tatum when the Sharks passed on him, and it’s safe to say that Isaiah Thomas will not be thrilled with this curveball thrown by Danny Ainge. Just a few months after the diminutive point guard took the Celtics to the Conference Finals, the Celtics have seemingly decided to go into another direction by taking a potential franchise player at his position. Often compared to John Wall, Fox is one of the fastest players in the draft with the ball in his hands and could become a high-level defender at his position.

TRADE
Nuggets receives: Dwight Howard, 2018 1st Round Pick (Top 10 Protected)
Hawks receives: 5th Pick

Just one season after he signed a three-year, $70.5 million contract with his hometown Hawks, the former Defensive Player of the Year is on the move again as the Hawks opted to trade him to the Denver Nuggets alongside a future protected first in exchange for the 5th overall selection. Holders of the 6th pick already, the Hawks will now possess back to back picks, and are now on the clock.

5. Atlanta Hawks select SG Malik Monk (Kentucky)

Speedy point guard Dennis Schroder needs a backcourt mate to play with, and there isn’t a better fit in this draft class than the fantastic scoring two-guard Monk. One of the best shooters in this draft, Monk will fit in head coach Mike Budenholzer’s offense seamlessly.

6. Atlanta Hawks select PF Lauri Markkanen (Arizona)

If Monk is the best shooter in this draft, Markkanen is a close second and is easily the best shooting big man in the class of 2017. Standing at 7 feet tall and weighing 230 pounds, the Finnish native is physically tougher than people give him credit for and has a fantastic offensive skillset that will only get better as he gains NBA experience. Atlanta’s offense has stalled and trailed off in the last few seasons, but the addition of both Monk and Markkanen could reignite Budenholzer's ball-sharing system and allow it to thrive once again.

7. Phoenix Suns select SF Jayson Tatum (Duke)

There was only so far he could fall down the draft board, and the Suns will be absolutely thrilled that one of the most talented offensive players in the draft fell into their lap at No. 7. Tatum is beyond smooth on the offensive end of the floor and he will form a very formidable offensive duo with Devin Booker on the wings.

8. Philadelphia 76ers select PF/C Zach Collins (Gonzaga)

Somebody tell Philadelphia they can only play so many big men at the same time on the floor? As a player, Collins is a terrific one, probably the best defensive big man in this class with stretch-big capability and potential on the offensive end. However, the Sixers are already struggling to give minutes to the likes of Okafor, Embiid, Noel, and Saric, which is why they have been trying all night to trade up for a guard or wing player, which makes this pick absolutely incomprehensible. Trust the process, I guess? Who knows what they are thinking over there.

9. Miami Heat select PG Frank Ntilikina (France)

Considered the top overseas prospect in this draft, the 18 year old Ntilikina is a big bodied point guard has fantastic defensive versatility and a steadily improving jump shot, which are attributes that should complement Goran Dragic well if they choose to play them both in a two point guard system.

10. Charlotte Hornets select PG Dennis Smith Jr. (North Carolina State)

A surprising pick here as Michael Jordan overlooks both the UNC - NC State rivalry, and the fact that he has a star point guard on the roster in Kemba Walker. An explosive athlete and talented scorer who can make plays off the dribble and comes with a ton of upside, Smith is the best available pick at this point and is a legitimate long-term asset for the franchise.

11. Utah Jazz select SF Jonathan Isaac (Florida State)

A late riser in the draft and in his basketball career, Isaac has more defensive potential than anyone else in this draft class. He should be able to defend at all five positions, similar to Kevin Garnett or Anthony Davis on the defensive side, if he fulfils his massive potential. Rudy Gobert is going to love this pick, forget about the Splash Brothers, these two are going to be the Swat Brothers with the amount of defensive stops they’ll get every game.

TRADE
Wizards receives: Nicolas Batum
Hornets receives: 12th pick

Hornets become the second team to get two picks in the lottery this year, as they trade away starting small forward Nicolas Batum to Washington in exchange for the 12th overall selection. Charlotte is now on the clock again.

12. Charlotte Hornets select PF John Collins (Wake Forest)

Perhaps the most offensively talented big man in the draft, Collins possesses an impressive array of post moves that will make a world of difference to the Hornets’ interior play. He does have questionable defensive tendencies and coaches have been concerned with his lack of effort on that end in the past, so it remains to be seen if the Hornets have just shot themselves in the foot by trading away Batum here for this pick straight up.

TRADE
Mavericks receives: Jared Dudley, 2018 1st Round Pick (Top 3 Protected)
Suns receives: 13th pick, A.J. Hammons

The Suns will be the third team to pick twice in the lottery this year following a trade with Dallas, as they send veteran forward Jared Dudley along with a not-so-heavily protected future first rounder in exchange for sophomore center A.J. Hammons and the 13th selection in the draft. As a result, Phoenix is now on the clock.

13. Phoenix Suns select PF Bam Adebayo (Kentucky)

Aside from having the coolest name in the draft (How can you get better than Bam?), Bam Adebayo is a tremendous athlete in the mould of a Tristian Thompson. He’s physical, explosive, hard-working, and will protect the rim at all costs. However, the Suns already have a horde of bigs on the roster, including Dragan Bender and Marquese Chriss, who they picked in last year’s draft. It remains to be seen whether or not at least one of them will be moved to free up some minutes for everybody else.

14. Minnesota Timberwolves select SF O.G. Anunoby (Indiana)

A versatile lock down defender, Anunoby is a dream pick for Wolves GM and Head Coach Tom Thibodeau, who has loved players such as Luol Deng and Jimmy Butler in the past for their ability to do those things. He is injury prone though, and that might not fly well with Thibs, who is known to play his guys an overabundant amount of minutes.

15. Denver Nuggets select PF Isaiah Hartenstein (Germany)

Described as a 7-footer with great potential as an overgrown stretch-four, Hartenstein’s game is exactly the same as his fellow countryman, the future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki. While he hasn’t had a particularly productive season last year in Lithuania, Hartenstein’s got the potential for the Nuggets to take a gamble on, and fits in particularly well with the skillset of their star center Nikola Jokic. If he becomes just half as good as Dirk, this pick is more than worth it.

16. Seattle Supersonics select PF Cameron Oliver (Nevada)

A tremendous athlete who could be the next Draymond Green-type player if he lives up to his potential, Cam Oliver is a very raw, but promising long-term prospect that has fantastic length (7’1” ¼ wingspan at 6’8”), and budding perimeter skills on the offensive end of the floor. Getting picked this high (projected as a second round pick), and in the lottery, no less, must come as a shock to even Oliver himself, but the Sonics clearly believes his long term potential and are ready to roll the dice on him.

2017 NBA Draft: Live Pick-By-Pick Analysis
1st Round: Mid-Late Round Picks (17-32)

17. New York Knicks select SF Justin Jackson (North Carolina)

By all accounts, this is widely considered to be one of the safest picks in the draft, as Tar Heels Junior Justin Jackson is already a very solid all-rounded player who can play defense and knock down long range jumpers with consistency. He’s hard working, intelligent, and reliable. There’s just not a whole lot of upside here, what you see is what you get, but maybe that’s just what the Knicks need, some stability.

18. Toronto Raptors select PF/C Harry Giles (Duke)

The wildcard of the night, Giles was regarded as having potentially the best talent out of all of them in college, but has succumbed to multiple knee injuries (four) and is considered to be a big injury risk. However, at No. 18, this is a completely justifiable homerun swing that might just pan out for the Raptors if Giles can successfully bury his injuries in the past.

TRADE
Bucks receives: Marvin Williams, 2019 1st round pick (Top 10 Protected)
Hornets receives: 19th pick, 50th pick

Michael Jordan is going all in on this draft, as he acquires his third first round pick of the night here as well as a mid-second round selection in exchange for veteran forward Marvin Williams and a future protected first. Bucks add a little veteran leadership as Jason Kidd’s squad looks to make a name for themselves in the Eastern Conference. A win-win for both sides here.

19. Charlotte Hornets select SG Terrance Ferguson (Australia)

Ferguson's choice to go to Australia instead of Arizona opened him up to some harsh criticism. The Australian league is extremely physical, and he struggled to handle it as a teen. His lack of a handle and ideal offensive feel were exposed as well, and he didn't play much. But he has the potential to be the best 3-and-D player in this draft because of his rangy shot, crazy athleticism and strong work ethic. In the long run, he might very well be an upgrade over recently departed Nicholas Batum, whom they traded away earlier this evening in their move up to #12.

20. New Orleans Pelicans select C Justin Patton (Creighton)

The knock on Patton is that he is a jack of all trades, mastery of none, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing as he will be able to do whatever is necessary to complement Anthony Davis in New Orleans. A late bloomer, Patton stunned people this season as a redshirt freshman and still has upside as he becomes polished, and should be able to serve as a viable rotational option for many years to come.

21. Philadelphia 76ers select SG Tyler Dorsey (Oregon)

Wait, they didn’t pick a big man this time? How about that? All jokes aside though, Dorsey is an offensive specialist and can get buckets in bunches when he is on a roll. Unfortunately, when he is not, he’s just a brick machine. At least there are plenty of big bodies to get rebounds in Philadelphia, I guess.

22. Indiana Pacers select SG Donovan Mitchell (Louisville)

A supremely athletic player who can play at either guard spot, Donovan Mitchell has a ton of upside and really should’ve been picked a lot earlier, with a lot of pre-draft mocks predicting him to go in the lottery. His ball handling skills still need work, but he can be a very good 3-and-D style guard who can occasionally help out as a secondary ball handler moving forward.

23.Chicago Bulls select PF Kyle Kuzma (Utah)

An athletic stretch four, Chicago has picked up a player who at worst is going to be a solid bench option, and at best can successfully take over the starting position from the underwhelming Bobby Portis and Nikola Mirotic in the future. They have other needs to fill, but this isn’t a bad pick at all.

24. Detroit Pistons select SF Devin Robinson (Florida)

A physical specimen, Robinson looks the part of an NBA forward with his chiseled upper body and explosive athleticism. He's still quite light at 190 pounds, concerning considering his age, but overall he has the tools that make scouts wonder what kind of player he could be in an up-tempo, switch heavy system with the floor spaced and ball movers next to him. Certainly fits well with Stanley Johnson as a rotational option moving forward.

25. Brooklyn Nets select C Anzejs Pasecniks (Latvia)
One of the very best foreign prospects, Pasecniks has the potential to become a very good backup center or even a starter in the league for years to come. Standing at 7’2”, Pasecniks has tremendous agility for someone his size, covering ground fluidly and being extremely light on his feet. He runs the floor well, is quick off the ground, and can play above the rim with ease, often catching lobs in impressive fashion. Adjusting to the American lifestyle wouldn’t be too hard either, as we are sure Porzingis will be more than happy to look beyond the Knicks-Nets rivalry and welcome his fellow teammate from their days with the Under-18s Latvian National Team to New York/Brooklyn.

26. Toronto Raptors select PG Frank Jackson (Duke)

An exceptionally athletic guard who can get downhill quickly and score both at the rim and make outside jumpers, Jackson is not as good as a playmaker but can be an explosive scorer off the bench, and the Raptors will be just fine with that with the steady Kyle Lowry at the helm.

27. Houston Rockets select SG P.J. Dozier (South Carolina)

At this point in time, Dozier is more of an elite athlete than he is as a basketball player. His size, length, and athleticism should translate well on the defensive end, but he’ll need a lot of development to fit into the fast pace, three point shooting D’Antoni offense in Houston; but if coached right, Dozier at No. 27 could be viewed as an absolute steal for the Rockets a few years down the line.

28. San Antonio Spurs select C Ike Anigbogu (UCLA)

A mobile big man with long arms and a good burst, Ike Anigbogu is a beast on the offensive boards. He has good size and lower body strength to properly box out bigger opponents, and has the high energy that makes for a successful offensive rebounder at any level. While he is a very raw offensive talent at this point, he works hard and gets a lot of transition baskets after a defensive play, which is his biggest strength at this point. One of the best shot blockers in the nation, Anigbogu is also very good at covering pick and rolls - a necessity in today’s NBA - and is also a strong defender in the post. Overall, he’s a hard working talent whose offensive game can be moulded by the right coaching staff. Is there a better fit for him other than Gregg Popovich and the Spurs?

29. Portland Trailblazers select PF/C Thomas Bryant (Indiana)

Bryant possesses an incredible wingspan of 7’6” and has a soft touch around the rim. He has a terrific motor that should get him minutes early on in his NBA career, but will need to improve on that jumper if he is to become a more permanent option on the offensive end. Despite being a sophomore, Bryant is only 19 years old, and has a ton of potential for the Blazers to work with.

TRADE
Thunder receives: Draft rights to 25th pick Anzejs Pasecniks, Trevor Booker
Nets receives: 30th pick, 2018 2nd round pick (via Boston)

Well, so much for Porzingis being able to show Pasecniks around New York. The rookie goes hat swapping just 5 picks after he was drafted, and gets shipped off to Oklahoma City alongside Trevor Booker.

30. Brooklyn Nets select SG Luke Kennard (Duke)

We can’t blame the Nets for trading themselves into this pick and snapping up Kennard, as he was expected to potentially go in the lottery but unexpectedly fell down to the very last picks here in the first round. Kennard can flat out shoot the basketball and is better than he gets credited for on the defensive end of the floor. He’ll prove to be a very good compliment to Jeremy Lin in the Nets backcourt moving forward.

TRADE
Cavaliers receives: Ian Mahinmi
Wizards receives: 31st pick

Cleveland has no need for a rookie as they wish to gear up for another Finals run, and the Wizards didn’t have a first round pick prior to this deal.

31. Washington Wizards select PF T.J. Leaf (UCLA)

Another guy who was predicted to go much earlier than this, Leaf is a hard-nosed stretch-four with a feathery touch from all ranges out to the corner 3-pointer. He may not have star power, but few if any players in this draft have a clearer NBA role than Leaf.

TRADE
Sharks receives: 33rd pick, 2019 2nd round pick
Hawks receives: 32nd pick

Atlanta clearly wasn’t done with just two first rounders, as they trade one pick up back into the first round at the cost of a future second round pick. Chicago happily obliged.

32. Atlanta Hawks select SG Josh Hart (Villanova)

The first-team All-American has amazing statistical projections because he was so efficient and has all the physical tools to be a good, solid shooting guard. He’ll provide some very solid depth in the shooting guard rotation with fellow rookie Malik Monk.

2017 NBA Draft: Live Pick-By-Pick Analysis
Second Round (33-64)

33. Chicago Sharks select PG Derrick White (Colorado)

Chicago needs point guard depth desperately, and having passed on taking one with the No. 2 pick, they pick up a very solid combo guard here after trading their way down from the end of the first round to the first pick of the second round. White possesses excellent size and a strong feel for the game. He’s a good athlete who is very versatile, being able to handle the ball, shoot it from distance, and drive in and create his own shot when needed, his athleticism and size will also make him a good defender, and could make an immediate impact for the guard-deprived Sharks.

34. Houston Rockets select PF Semi Ojeleye (SMU)

35. San Antonio Spurs select PF Jordan Bell (Oregon)

36. Sacramento Kings select SG Sindarius Thornwell (South Carolina)

37. Phoenix Suns select C Jarrett Allen (Texas)

38. Boston Celtics select V.J. Beachem (Notre Dame)

39. New Orleans Pelicans select PG Monte Morris (Iowa State)

40. Memphis Grizzleis select PF Caleb Swanigan (Purdue)

41. Orlando Magic select PF Jonan Bolden (Australia)

42. Utah Jazz select PG Edmond Sumner (Xavier)

43. Washington Wizards select PG Jawun Evans (Oklahoma State)

44. Utah Jazz select PG Melo Trimble (Maryland)

45. Charlotte Hornets select PF Jonathan Motley (Baylor)

46. Toronto Raptors select PG Bronson Koenig (Wisconsin)

47. Oklahoma City Thunder select PF D.J. Wilson (Michigan)

48. Boston Celtics select SG Dwayne Bacon (Florida State)

49. Dallas Mavericks select PG Frank Mason III (Kansas)

50. Charlotte Hornets select SF Malcolm Hill (Illinois)

51. Seattle Supersonics select SG Antonio Blakeney (LSU)

52. Los Angeles Lakers select SG Sterling Brown (SMU)

53. Minnesota Timberwolves select PF Vlatko Canar (Slovenia)

54. Chicago Sharks select SF Dillon Brooks (Oregon)

Measured at 6'6”, 220 pounds, Brooks has a very strong and physically mature frame that predicates a lot of what he does on the offensive end of the floor. He is a good, but not great athlete, generally relying on physical straight line drives getting downhill. He can be a powerful above the rim finisher with momentum going to his right, but for the most part lacks elite finishing ability in a crowd, partially due to his lack of length. With the right system, Brooks might be able to turn into a rotational contributor off the bench someday.

55. Sacramento Kings select PF Ivan Rabb (California)

56. New York Knicks select SG Andrew White III (Syracuse)

57. Brooklyn Nets select PG Marcus Keene (Central Michigan)

58. New York Knicks select PG Kobi Simmons (Arizona)

59. Chicago Sharks select SF Jaron Blossomgame (Clemson)

Measured at 6’7” with a 6’10” wingspan, Blossomgame has the size and length to play either the small forward position or small ball power forward in the right situation at the next level. He’s an excellent cutter off the ball and runs hard in transition, but will need to improve his consistency with his outside jump shot to become a regular contributor on the offensive end of the floor. Similarly, his defense will need some work becoming more consistent, as he has the potential to become a versatile defender who can switch onto multiple positions, but has yet to harness his strengths and turn them into production.

60. San Antonio Spurs select C Jonathan Jeanne (France)

61. Houston Rockets select SF Jamel Artis (Pittsburgh)

62. Oklahoma City Thunder select SF L.J. Peak (Georgetown)

63. Boston Celtics select PF Chris Boucher (Oregon)

64.Utah Jazz select PG Isaiah Briscoe (Kentucky)

And that concludes this live coverage of the 2017 NBA Draft here at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Thank you all for tuning in.

Jackson is a good pickup. He reminds me of Andrew Wiggins. A great athlete who may take a little while to develop his skills.

Phoenix are gonna be good in a few years with Booker and Tatum (Y)

No way I'm having Big Bust Brand come to Chicago :P

Personally he reminds me of a more athletic version of Jimmy Butler when he first came into the league, a good defender who has the potential to get much better on offense in the future.

Yeah Phoenix has a very good offensive duo there, I was struggling deciding between Tatum or Jackson but ultimately I think Jackson's more of a fit with what I want in a player and has a higher ceiling.

Ron Adams Leaves Warriors for Sharks

The Chicago Sharks have hired Ron Adams as assistant coach.

Widely regarded as one of the top defensive assistant coaches in the NBA, Adams had previously worked under Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, Celtics head coach Brad Stevens, and was lead assistant to Tom Thibodeau while the latter was head coach of the Chicago Bulls.

While Adams will be moving away from his home state of California again, it is another form of homecoming for the 70 year old as he had worked in Chicago for 11 seasons in various coaching or scouting roles for the Bulls before he was let go in 2013, a decision that Adams himself has said to be "mystifying" and "hurtful".

Adams will work as the lead assistant under head coach David Blatt.

In related news, Golden State has promoted former special assistant coach Elijah Nelson to replace Adams.

Sonics Hire Andre Miller as Lead Assistant

Recently retired NBA veteran Andre Miller has been hired by the Seattle Supersonics as an assistant coach.

Drafted 8th overall in the 1999 NBA draft, Miller (41) played 18 seasons in the league, and was the NBA's assist leader in 2002. He's the only player in NBA history to have at least 16,000 career points, 8,000 assists and 1,500 steals without making an NBA All-Star Game, and is known for being notoriously obsessed with studying game film, something that is certain to translate well as he embarks on his coaching career.

"I'm very excited to begin the next chapter in my life, and I look forward to be working with this fantastic group of players here in Seattle" said Miller.

Miller will serve as lead assistant under incumbent head coach Milan Mack.

Chicago Sharks Sign Gordon Hayward

Chicago, IL -- The Chicago Sharks announced today the team has signed All-Star forward Gordon Hayward to a four year, $114.47 million deal. Hayward will receive a player option in Year 4.

"After seven years in Utah, I have decided to join the Chicago Sharks," wrote Hayward at The Players Tribune.

A first-time NBA All-Star and the NBA’s Most Improved Player award recipient in 2016-17, Hayward (6-8, 226 lbs.) averaged career highs in points (19.9), rebounds (5.5), steals (1.6), and blocks (0.8) on 45.2% shooting from the field, 34.9% from three, and a career high 83.3% at the free throw line.

Despite Hayward’s efforts, however, the Utah Jazz won only 37 games and failed to make the playoffs for the 5th consecutive season. It is rumored that this stalemate in the team’s development is a major reason why Hayward opted to choose for a fresh start. While the Sharks did not make the playoffs last season, they did post the second best record (tying the 66-67 Bulls) by an expansion team in their inaugural season with 33 wins, and looks to be a major contender to make a playoff push this season.

“I am very excited to be a part of a new project in such a historically great sports town.” wrote Hayward “Chicago has always been a winning city, from the Bulls, to the Bears, to the White Sox, the Blackhawks, and the Cubs. I look forward to be able to help the Sharks organization in writing our own chapter in the storied city of Chicago.”

Hayward will wear the number 20 for the Sharks.

Derrick Rose Returns to Chicago

Chicago, IL -- The Chicago Sharks have signed Chicago native and 2011 league MVP Derrick Rose to a three year, $69.22 million deal.

Rose (6-3, 190) played in 74 games (70 starts) for the New York Knicks in 2016-17, averaging 18.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and a career high 1.5 steals on 44.6% shooting from the field, 31.3% from deep, and 79.4% from the line, all of which are his highest averages since tearing his ACL in the 2012 NBA playoffs. Additionally, the three-time All-Star was also named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for his play in the first week of April last season, and his efforts helped the Knicks (37-45) reached the NBA playoffs for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

“I have nothing but great things to say about the city of New York, the Knicks organization, and of course, Knicks fans everywhere who showed me love and support; but there’s nothing like home.” said Rose, “This feels just like when I was drafted by the Bulls following that year at Memphis. I am very grateful to the Sharks organization for giving me this opportunity and I look forward to playing again in my hometown.”

Over his eight-year NBA career, the 28-year-old Chicago native has averaged 19.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 6.2 assists in 34.8 minutes through 480 games (475 starts) with the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks.

Rose was originally selected out of the University of Memphis as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. He earned league MVP honors in 2010-11 after posting career highs with 25.0 points and 4.1 rebounds while adding 7.7 assists in 37.4 minutes per game and leading the Bulls to the best record in the NBA (62-20). He also won the 2009 NBA Rookie of the Year award and has three NBA All-Star selections (2010, 2011, 2012).

Rose will wear number 1 for the Sharks, with JaVale McGee reverting back to number 34, the number he wore while with the Wizards and Nuggets.

Chicago Sharks sign free agent Jonathon Simmons

Chicago, IL -- The Chicago Sharks have signed free agent forward Jonathon Simmons to a four-year, $4.48 million deal. President of Basketball Operations Kevin Garnett announced yesterday. The Sharks hold a team option for the fourth year of the deal.

Undrafted by an NBA franchise at the 2012 NBA Draft, Simmons (6’6”, 195, 9/14/89) has appeared in 129 NBA regular season games (two starts) in the last two seasons, all with San Antonio, averaging 4.3 ppg, 1.5 rpg, and 0.9 apg in 12.8 mpg.

“Jonathon (Simmons) is an elite wing defender that will provide toughness and athleticism to our team,” said Garnett, “His tremendous work ethic has helped him continually grow as a player and we are very excited to have him onboard with us here in Chicago.”

After two years in junior college, Simmons spent his junior season (2011-12) at the University of Houston. He played in all 30 games, averaging 14.7 ppg., 5.0 rpg. and 2.2 apg., while shooting .512 (154-301) from the floor, leading the Cougars in scoring. Simmons played in 94 games during two seasons (2013-15) with the Austin Spurs of the NBA G League, averaging 12.7 ppg., 4.4 rpg. and 2.6 apg., while shooting .505 (446-883). He made the team after attending an open tryout in 2013. Simmons was named to the NBA G League All-Defensive Third Team in 2014-15.

Simmons will wear the number 17 for Chicago.

Sharks Sign Kyle Korver

Chicago, IL -- The Chicago Sharks have signed free agent forward Kyle Korver to a one-year, $5 million deal.

Korver (6-7, 212) played in 35 games (34 starts) for Atlanta last season with averages of 11.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 26.7 minutes. Hampered by a knee injury for most of the year, the sharpshooter shot just .434 from the field, .780 from the foul line and .418 from the three-point line.

Entering his 15th NBA season, Korver has appeared in 999 games (430 starts) with Philadelphia, Utah, Chicago (Bulls), and Atlanta, owning career averages of 10.0 points and 3.1 rebounds in 26.5 minutes per game. He was an NBA All-Star in 2015 and ranks eighth in NBA history with 1,964 career three-pointers (third among active players) and ninth all-time in three-point field goal percentage (.429). Korver has hit 100 threes or more 11 times in his career, including two seasons with over 220 three pointers. Korver is also the single season record holder for three-point field goal percentage, having made three-pointers at a .536 rate in the 2009-10 season.

Korver will wear the number 26 for the Sharks.

Sharks sign rookie Jordan Bell

Chicago, IL -- The Chicago Sharks have signed rookie Jordan Bell to a three-year, $1.88 million contract. Chicago will hold a team option for the third season.

Drafted 35th overall (3rd pick in second round) by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2017 NBA Draft, Bell was left unsigned and eventually had his draft rights renounced by San Antonio, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Bell (6-9, 224) played for three seasons at Oregon, averaging 7.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks in 24.7 minutes per game in his collegiate career. He was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and was also named to the Alll-Pac-12 Second Team in 2017.

“We really wanted this kid in the draft, so we are thrilled that we managed to get him in the end” said Kevin Garnett, “He’s a fantastic defender that can defend multiple positions, that’s huge in today’s game”

Bell will wear number 2 for Chicago.

Sharks Resign Green, Yi, Mills

Chicago, IL -- The Chicago Sharks have announced the resigning of team free agents Gerald Green, Patrick Mills, and Yi Jianlian.

The leading scorer for the Sharks in 2017 with 16 points per game, Green (6-7, 205) will return on a two year deal worth $6.13 million, a significant rise from the league minimum that the 31 year old, 10 year veteran guard made last season, but still a relative bargain in the league for a player of his production.

Meanwhile, Yi Jianlian will be returning on a three-year, $6.27 million contract following a successful return to the NBA in 2016-17, as the 29 year old forward/center from China put up averages of 8.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in 81 appearances last season after a 4 year absence from the NBA. A sweet shooting seven footer (.375 from deep last season), Yi’s game fits the modern NBA and gives the interior dominant Sharks an option from range. The Sharks will have a team option for the third year of the deal.

Lastly, incumbent starting point guard Patty Mills will return on a two year, $16.36 million contract, with the Sharks holding a team option for the second year of the deal. Mills (6-0, 185) led the team in assists (4.8), steals (1.7), and three-point field goal percentage (.398) last season, but suffered from reoccurring ankle issues that kept him to just 36 appearances (34 starts) for the team. This is essentially a risk-free, prove it deal for the Sharks as the 29 year old former Spur does appear to have enough talent to succeed, but will need to stay healthy to secure another deal in the future.

Chicago’s roster now stands at 15.

Break a leg, Gordon!

Shit, too soon, isn't it? Nice off-season. I mean, that Derrick Rose deal would be a disaster in real life, but I imagine he's probably still rated in the low 80s here, so he should do a nice job running your offense. Should be a playoff year for the Sharks!

Don't want to sound like I'm patting myself on the back but I'd like to think it's closer to ten years :P Thanks! Hopefully it pans out

:( Heartbreaking what happened to G-Time IRL, hope he comes back strong next season, big fan of his.
Yeah Rose is still solid, don't quite remember off the top of my head but I'd say around high 70s low 80s range for sure. Plus, he stayed healthy last season for New York here so worth a gamble I reckon!

Hopefully everyone stays healthy, if they do I definitely think we can nab a spot. I mean, if the Knicks made it with 37 wins last season I should be able to easily slide in now with all the upgrades.

Hopefully a bit more fun to be had with a stronger team, too. It's not ridiculously overpowered, so it should still be fun and challenging to play with, especially on higher difficulty levels.

Hayward is a brilliant signing. Congrats!

I like the addition of Rose, although that is a fair bit of money for such an injury-prone guy. Sounds like he should stay healthy though.

Playoffs are a realistic aim with this newly strengthened roster (Y)

Kevin Durant Signs Four Year Deal with Golden State

The Golden State Warriors have announced that forward Kevin Durant has agreed to resign with the team on a four-year, $133.54 million deal.

Durant will make $35.5 million in the final year of the contract.

The deal will not contain a player or team option.

Stephen Curry Re-Signs with Warriors on Hometown Discount

Stephen Curry has agreed to resign with the Golden State Warriors for a reported four year, $114.47 million deal.

Curry took a significant pay cut from the five year, $201 million supermax deal that he was eligible for, as the 2017 NBA Finals MVP will make $54.9 million less than he would if he had opted for the supermax option.

Curry’s deal contains a player option for the fifth season for $31.63 million.

Blake Griffin Agrees Upon Five Year Deal with Clippers

Blake Griffin has agreed upon a five year, $146.1 million deal to remain with the Los Angeles Clippers.

A six time All-Star, the 28 year old forward is coming off one of his best seasons in 2017, where he averaged 20.7 points, 11.2 rebounds, 5.2 assists and a career high 1.5 blocks over 69 games played and made First Team All-NBA for the first time in his career.

Griffin’s deal will not contain a player or team option.

Chris Paul Spurns Clippers, Joins San Antonio

Free Agent guard Chris Paul has agreed to a Four Year, $24.87 million deal to sign with the San Antonio Spurs.

A 10 time All-Star, the 32 year old point guard turned down a $201 million max deal ($45M in final season) from the Clippers to sign with the San Antonio on the Mid-Level Exception, leaving roughly $176 million on the table.

“It’s not always about the money,” said Paul, “We’ve had a great run but I feel like it’s time to move on. I’m very excited with the prospects of joining with a great organization with a history of winning and I look forward to competing for a championship with these guys here in San Antonio.”

Sources have cited the deteriorating relationship between Paul and Clippers head coach Doc Rivers as a primary reason behind Paul’s decision.

"Chris despises Doc," said one league executive.

Manu Ginobili Re-Signs with Spurs

16 year veteran guard Manu Ginobili has agreed upon a one year, $1.01 million deal to remain with the San Antonio Spurs.

Ginobili (40) is coming off a resurgent season in which he put him the highest averages in six seasons, finishing the season with 13.1 points, 4.8 assists, and 2.0 steals per game in 77 games played (25.2 mpg).

A four time NBA Champion and former Sixth Man of the Year, Ginobili has spent his entire career with the Spurs since being drafted 57th overall in the 1999 NBA Draft.

The deal will also contain a no-trade clause.

J.J. Redick Agrees to Deal with Seattle

Free agent guard J.J. Redick will join the Seattle Supersonics on a one year, $13.62 million deal.

Entering his 12th season, the former Duke standout is a three point specialist, and is tied with Craig Hodges and Jose Calderon at the 16th spot in the all-time career three point percentage rankings (.412).

Picked 11th overall in the 2006 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, Redick has spent the previous 4 seasons with the LA Clippers and possess a career average of 11.7 points per game over 694 games.

Sonics Sign Jeff Green to Four Year Deal

The Seattle Supersonics have agreed to terms with Free Agent forward Jeff Green on a Four-Year, $18.33 million deal.

Green (6-9, 235) spent last season as a member of the expansion Chicago Sharks, and averaged 11.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game in 77 appearances.

A versatile forward with tremendous length, the 31 year old, tenth year veteran actually began his career with the previous Seattle Sonics before their move to Oklahoma City, and was named to the All-Rookie First Team along with then-teammate Kevin Durant.

Jazz sign Otto Porter Jr

Otto Porter Jr. has agreed to terms with the Utah Jazz on a three-year, $32.77 million deal.

The third overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards, the 5th year forward has career averages over 8.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game, but has averaged just over 11 points and 5 rebounds per game in the last two seasons.

As Porter was a restricted free agent, Washington had an opportunity to match the deal, but they have declined the option.

Rudy Gay Agrees to Deal with Brooklyn

Rudy Gay has agreed upon a three-year, $68.93 million deal with the Brooklyn Nets.

A 12th year veteran, the 31 year old averaged 20.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, and a career high 4.1 assists per game last season with the Sacramento Kings.

Magic Sign Tyreke Evans to Three-Year Deal

The Orlando Magic have agreed to terms with free agent guard/forward Tyreke Evans on a three-year deal worth $59.52 million.

The deal contains a player option for the fourth season for $21.55 million.

Taken fourth overall in the 2009 NBA Draft, Evans was named the 2010 NBA Rookie of the Year, and has the unique ability to play the 1-3 positions on the floor.

The 28 year old has career averages of 16.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.3 steals over 506 games played.

Serge Ibaka to Join Seattle

The Seattle Supersonics have agreed to terms with free agent forward Serge Ibaka on a three year deal believed to be worth $38 million.

The deal also includes a player option for the fourth season for $13.76 million.

Ibaka was drafted by the original Seattle Sonics franchise in 2008 (24th overall) but stayed in Europe until the 2009-10 season, where he joined the new Oklahoma City Thunder franchise.

A 6-10 forward from Congo, the 28 year old has career averages of 11.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game over 577 games played.

Nerlens Noel Agrees to Three Year Deal with Atlanta

Center Nerlens Noel has agreed to terms on a three-year, $68.97 million deal with the Atlanta Hawks.

Taken 6th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft, Noel was named First Team All-Rookie in 2015 and had a productive sophomore campaign but has been deemed to be surplus to requirements in Philadelphia, as he struggled to compete with a plethora of other centers in the rotation for minutes last season.

As a result, Philadelphia has rescinded their right to match the contract of the restricted free agent, and Noel will look to make a name for himself with the rebuilding Hawks, who has added rookies Malik Monk and Lauri Markkanen this offseason in the NBA Draft.

Raptors, Lowry Agree to Three-Year Deal

The Toronto Raptors have re-signed free agent guard Kyle Lowry to a three year, $98.05 million deal.

A three-time All-Star (All with Toronto), Lowry averaged a career high 21.4 points along with 4.6 rebounds, 6.9 assists and a career high 2.3 steals per game last season for the 7th seed (38-44) Raptors, who were eliminated in the first round by the Boston Celtics.

Rudy Gobert Re-Signs with Jazz for Max

Rudy Gobert has agreed upon a five year, $120.81 million max contract to remain with the Utah Jazz.

Utah is desperate to keep Gobert after losing Gordon Hayward to Chicago earlier in Free Agency.

Gobert was the 27th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft out of France.

Thunder re-signs Steven Adams

Steven Adams has agreed upon a four year, $95.39 million deal to remain with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Entering his fourth season, the New Zealand native is coming off a career year where he averaged 13.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game over 69 games, all career highs. Adams finished 3rd in the Most Improved Player voting, losing out to the eventual winner Gordon Hayward and Brooklyn Nets guard Jeremy Lin, who finished second in the voting.

Adams was the 12th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft out of Pittsburgh with a pick acquired out of the James Harden trade.

Lakers sign Victor Oladipo

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed guard Victor Oladipo to a four year, $88.89 million deal.

The second overall pick by the Orlando Magic in the 2013 NBA Draft, the former First Team All Rookie spent his first three seasons with Orlando before being traded to Oklahoma City last season, where he showcased his playmaking skills, averaging a career high 7.3 assists per game as he fulfilled the supporting role that aided in Russell Westbrook’s MVP campaign.

In 304 career games played (247 starts) Oladipo has career averages of 15.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 1.8 steals over 32.8 minutes per game.

Definitely, not a super team by any stretch but should be pretty interesting to play with. (Y)

I like the addition of Rose, although that is a fair bit of money for such an injury-prone guy. Sounds like he should stay healthy though.

Playoffs are a realistic aim with this newly strengthened roster (Y)

Cheers! Stoked that Hayward chose us instead of returning to Utah, was a close one!

Rose did stay healthy last season so hopefully he will continue to do so. I've had bad luck with Point Guards getting injured all the time (Patty Mills) though, fingers crossed!

Playoffs definitely my aim this season in the weak East, most of the good signings are in the West as usual

Some interesting moves there. Utah did pretty well to quickly replace Hayward with Otto Porter, whilst also re-signing Gobert. And Philly adding a veteran like Millsap seems like a smart move.

Chris Paul must be happy with the number of mansions he already owns to turn down that much money

I am a bit annoyed that Alex Len got such a cheap deal, considering that I'm paying him something like $16m per season

Certainly some different moves, but a few that mimicked real life as well. I still laugh at Kevin Durant rejoining the Thunder in the second year of my NBA 2K17 MyCAREER.

Chris Paul's decision was definitely the shocker of the offseason, had to do a double take when I saw that amount. Spurs look legit as right now.

Len here just isn't the superstar he is in your game

Yeah definitely, I was surprised at a few of them. Safe to say Philly throwing nearly $100M at another big man made me laugh
Rondo getting a 30m extension made me think that, at the very least, real life GarPax might be (barely) better than their virtual counterparts.

Backcourt: Well, where do you start? The Sharks have a new shiny point guard in former NBA MVP Derrick Rose, which should allow Patty Mills to return to the bench role he so thrived in during his time in San Antonio and hopefully the presence of two starting caliber point guards will enable both of them to have a lighter load and remain healthy throughout the season.

Number two overall pick Josh Jackson has impressed at camp thus far and is likely to start at the three spot, which means that the team’s top signing Gordon Hayward will most likely moved to the two-guard spot, a position he’s played in the NBA in his first few seasons in Utah until moving back to his more natural position at the three in 2013. All of this, of course, means that incumbent starter Gerald Green, who was the star man last season on the offensive end, will be moved to the second unit as an off-the-bench scorer, a role that he has often played as in his journeyman career.

Additionally, new singings Kyle Korver and Jonathan Simmons should get the remaining of the minutes at the wing spots depending on the situation. Korver provides consistent long range shooting at the highest level while Simmons’ athleticism will be invaluable in defensive situations.

Frontcourt: Pretty much unchanged from last season, Boban Marjanovic should once again be the starter, although it must be noted that JaVale McGee has really tuned in during training camp and is competing hard for the starting spot. Head coach David Blatt has a really good problem with having two starting caliber centers, and if properly managed, both could end up being huge factors in the Sharks’ push for the playoffs this season.

Barring any curveballs, the ever so reliable Taj Gibson should once again be able to make the power forward spot his own while being backed up by the sweet shooting stretch big in Yi Jianlian. Rookie Jordan Bell will get spot minutes here and there, but it’ll mostly be a Taj-Yi tag team at the four spot with an occasional appearance as a small-ball four by Josh Jackson.

Season Forecast: The Sharks really showed heart last season, tying the old record for wins by an expansion team of 33 wins set by their neighbors from all those years ago (although both are topped by the 39 win Sonics). They have managed to get upgrades at their weakest areas from last season, getting younger on the wing and massively upgrading their point guard spot, and should health permit it, they will easily be able to move themselves into the top 8 spots in the relatively weak Eastern Conference this season.

It won’t be easy though, with three back-to-back games in the first two weeks of the season that includes games against Western Conference powerhouses in the Houston Rockets and the Golden State Warriors, Chicago will do very well to get off to a good start. Fortunately, the schedule softens up in the latter parts of the first month, making a winning first month a big possibility, something that the team was not able to do (winning record in a month) until March last season.

Offense: B-
The addition of Hayward and Rose, both capable scorers, should give an immediate boost to one of the worse offenses in the NBA from last season. Gerald Green will give their bench scoring a massive boost, and anything extra they can get out of rookie Josh Jackson will only be icing on the cake.

Defense: B+
The Sharks were already one of the best last season in terms of generating turnovers and blocking shots, and nothing really has changed on this end of the floor. Marjanovic, Gibson, and McGee will still be intimating forces to reckon with in the paint, while Josh Jackson should have the ability to be a (much) younger version of Thabo Sefolosha as the team’s primary defensive lockdown player. Adding a guy like Jonathon Simmons didn’t hurt either.

Experience: B+
The team will need a gelling period, but a lot of the guys are veterans who have been there and done it. Expect an injection of leadership from newcomers such as Hayward, and David Blatt is only getting more comfortable in the NBA ranks with each passing day.

Health: B-
Derrick Rose has had one healthy season since 2012 while Patty Mills missed 46 games last season. Boban Marjanovic also dealt with some ankle issues towards the end of last season. Fortunately, there’s a lot of depth added this offseason.
