I don't know that I'd say broken, but there are a couple of issues. First, there is a bit of a learning curve with the new Shot Meter, in both the concept and the timing required. That's usually the case when the mechanics get changed up, of course. Second, and more troubling, something does feel a little bit off with it - especially online - in that early or late releases sometimes seem to work better than releases that only just miss being Green.

I experienced a bit of weirdness randomly on shooting. After getting used to my guy's shooting style and the timing, sometimes at random, the meter would fill up super fast and I'd end up bricking it badly.

Someone in another post also mentioned that with game controllers, because your hands are somewhat angled holding them, thumbs down usually is not straight down, but down and towards the center, which throws off your shooting. When I shoot free throws, I prefer to take my right hand off the gamepad and just use my index finger straight down on the right stick to ensure it is perfectly straight.

We were actually talking about that in the party chat while playing 2K Pro-Am the other night. Since then, I've been experimenting with consciously trying to pull to the right, and it's actually resulting in more green releases and releases that are at least close to a perfect angle...in shootarounds and offline, at least.

Of course, that's out of the equation when you use the Shoot button, which I still do most of the time for jumpshots. I've noticed that the issue of slightly early/late releases being worse than significantly earlier/later releases applies to both the button and the stick.

I use the shoot button for regular jump shots, and never use the shot meter (I turned it off). I have no issues on jump shots. I actually find the shooting more realistic this year. The quicker shots help the realistic flow of the game.

I use the stick to do shimmy fades and many post moves. I havn't found the timing part or aiming really difficult. I will say however, if you are holding the controller in a lazy way with your right hand slumping, it's pretty easy to misguide your shot using the right stick, causing a brick or airball. Ive just learned to not let my hand be lazy and just pay extra attention when I use those moves. I use the right stick for reverse layups (pushing it towards the baseline), and floaters (pushing back on it), and I do those often... no issues with timing on those either.

I am getting used to layup timing, that it the most difficult adjustment in the game for me. I am getting better at it/finishing around the hoop.

I use a Xbox 360 controller via USB btw.

As I said, I'm having far fewer issues offline than online, owing to the lag. I'd agree that the layup timing is somewhat tougher.

Do you guys know how the game calculates whether a shot goes in or not with the stick vs the X button? Seems to me it could possibly be a penalty to shoot with the stick as there's no way you can be off to the left/right with the X button. (ignoring timing of the shot and only focusing on direction of stick, my guess is that X button is the base probability; if your stick is off, it subtracts a small percentage. if your stick is perfect, it adds a small percentage boost.)

Oddly enough, I've made total mistakes by wrenching the shot stick 90 degrees to the left or right to shoot a jumpshot and have had them go in.

I play with keyboard (no kidding) and I don't feel like I miss more than I should. I was concerned when they said they would implement this new stick direction thing, but at the end of the day it feels the same to me. Other than that, I like the new shooting system, makes hook shots look cool, but I kinda hate those anims after jumpshots.

To me shooting this year just seems unfair, to put it simply. I get that there is a learning curve with the new system but I don't think it's very friendly.

What they're expecting the user to do in terms of timing is simply too difficult. At this point to me at least. I'm just so used to just push the right stick in any direction to shoot. It's all dependent on situations on the court for me. I don't know why, but on different occasions I like to push it to the top right, on other occasions I like to push it to the bottom left, I guess it's just the most natural movement for my right thumb.

Using the shot button feels like an instant penalty. Open shots with the shot button that are just shy of a perfect release don't even get close too many times.
Layup timing on contact layups with the stick is hard enough, with the button it's almost impossible. I don't know how many layups I've had that just roll off, with guys like LeBron.

Maybe I'm just too clumsy for the new mechanics.

I don't know about any penalties on the stick per se, except that it's putting more control in your hands and increasing the chances you can mess things up. I do know that we're supposedly not penalised for using the button, but at the same time I have to imagine it's less reliable than being able to consistently get the right angle and good releases on the stick, since the aim isn't automated and thus we have to be at the mercy of a dice roll to some extent.

Actually on keyboard if you simply press the button corresponding with right stick down, you get a perfect aim every time.

I agree, shooting takes some getting use to, from previous versions. I know I've shot more air-balls and blowed more layups than ever before. Even when you have a perfect release, there's no guarantee it's going in.

It should. Green releases are supposed to be guaranteed baskets this year.

Also, are you suppose to move the right stick up or down to shoot jumpers? I usually use the button. And are you to move the left stick, to control the direction of the shot? I have played 5 games where it's damn near impossible to score. I've been on the wrong end of a couple of blowouts vs the CPU. It's discouraging...

Down for jumper, up for bank shot. Various angles for layups, but those are timed too.

Aiming on jump shots is the "down" or "up" with right stick, left stick is for momentum.

^^ So Dommy, you're a 2K vet, how do you like the shooting changes? Thx for the tips, but I still suck at shooting.

In game, I'm still used to the prior years' 2k's shooting system and flick the stick all over the place to shoot jumpers. Gonna have to retrain myself.

For free throws it's simply great. Easy bonus most of the time.
For open jumpers it's pretty fine bonus as well, though I found that shooting with the X button is simply fine alternative.
For momentum jumpers I'm using X most of the time though.

I find it confusing for posting up though. As far as I understand it, you have to start the specific move with right stick and then quickly move it down or up? Like I said, it feels confusing, maybe I'm just missing something.

The gathers are pretty fluid though.

Another problem are fadeaway jumpshots out of the post, for which you have to push the right stick away from the basket.
On broadcast camera angles that means you're getting a 90 degree left or right aim on every shot.

edit: I guess that's sort of what Dommy was talking about.
I haven't tried only triggering the shot pushing it away from the basket and then quickly aiming down, but even if that is the proper way to do it, it's not very intuitive and tedious

I don't get post ups either, fade aways are always banked?

From three-point range, a near-perfect release while holding up on the stick also seems to be a pretty effective, usually swishing instead of banking (even though it's supposed to be a bank attempt). Unless they've been toned down in the new patch, bank shots from midrange are also pretty reliable weapons.
