To lighten the mood a little, I'll report on my experience of actually playing this great mod for a bit (that's welcome here, right?)

A while ago I started a 14 game season with the Timberwolves using the 2004 roster and reached the playoffs (the usual 7 games per round). I just went back to it and finished the first round of the POs. I play on All-Star with 7min quarters and URB sliders but this is still URB V32 or V33, so no rebounding update.
Around the league, title candidates Lakers, Pacers & Pistons all astonishingly missed the playoffs

but then the season was only 14 games long, so randomness was a big factor. Still my Wolves will have to get through the Kings, Spurs & Heat on the way to KG's first title, and the Mavs & Rockets will be formidable opponents also, should we meet.
Western Conference Round 1 Wolves vs SpursThe 2 seed Wolves open the postseason at home to the 7th seed Spurs and the legendary Tim Duncan (gulp), so we get a worthy finals candidate and possibly the strongest opponent possible in the first round

.
As it turns out, I'm worried for a good reason, as Timmy & co wipe the floor with me in a merciless 76-39 destruction in which they score almost double my points. Now I'm very

and KG is up in his coaches face, looking all

. As I do not only fear for my own existence but also dread a slightly angry Garnett going all genocidal and annihilating the twin cities If I don't deliver that precious ring he so craves, I decide to rethink my gameplan and play with a little more focus & concentration next time because these Spurs are apparently no joke.
I have three go-to options offensively:
1. Hit Garnett in the post (high or low) and let him either hit a cutter, go 1vs1, or draw the double and hit a shooter.
2. Pick&Roll with Cassell & Garnett. This is great because I get so many options, KG can roll to the rim and finish athletically, pop out for a high percentage jumper or Cassell can look for his own shot, either going all the way or stopping and popping somewhere around the FT line. All those options are valid and efficient but auto-playcall doesn't call those plays very often so I have to force them manually some more.
3. Let Cassell post up Tony Parker. Sam is really good at this and Parker is a nice matchup so I'll give him Post Up High as Play Type but it's not the most reliable play of all time since I will usually get a contested step back/ hop step/ fadeaway jumper out of this and not an easier shot but the Wolves are a jump shooting team, so...
Spree, Hoijberg & Wally all can run a P&R, they can hit open shots either in the half court or transition and Gary Trent can post up but all other options beside the listed three are basically prayers against this San Antonio defense, so my offense basically dies when Cassell & Garnett are both out of the game. Smart as I am I decide this can't happen to much

 .
Besides is it really difficult for me to run a P&R with guys who are not good passers. While Spree, Wally & Fred can hunt their own shot if the defense focuses on the roll man and they get left open they have huge problems hitting the roll man in stride if the defense takes away the shot, most still get intercepted. With Garnett this still works because he can pop out and that pass is easy but good luck running a clean Wally/Olowokandi P&R.
Another strategic element will be to just hope to god the Spurs don't notice that Trenton Hassell is out there and that he can't do anything with a basketball, sound thinking if you ask me...
I'm basically gonna abuse the fact that Garnett is surrendering his free will to me and I'll turn him from a playmaker to a scorer. He has all the tools to abuse fools in the post but always lacked that Kobe-style "me first" mindset, which I think is a weakness when he's playing on crap lottery teams but also great strength when you pair him with other good players like Ainge did in Boston, his willingness to fit himself into a team concept is a major reason why I consider the guy to be top 10 all-time in terms of ability.
Furthermore I'll forego all but the clearest of fast breaking opportunites, for the chances of me messing up, getting the ball stolen and conceding a layup in turn are way too high. Our half court offense is reliable and Pop's men shall have to work hard for every single point.
Defensively I'll try to not do anything fancy and just stay in front of the ballhandler, as I've had bad experiences getting victimised on rim cuts when playing off-ball defense. The guys who can hurt me are Parker who will be given space to shoot (go under P&Rs) and Duncan who I'll try to cover 1vs1 with Garnett. I can't really double him because he's great at finding shooters and the Spurs have those. Also I have some technical difficulties when doubling, because the double team button alsways sends the closest preimeter player to help, which is a bad idea since his man is one pass away & Duncan makes those passes & Parker/Turkoglu & co hit those kickouts at near a 100% clip. Is there a better way than to manually switch to a weakside preimeter guy and and run him all the way over to Timmy? Doubling with my C would also be bad as Rasho is smart enough to cut to the rim for an easy dunk.
Surprisingly '04 Manu Ginobili is nowhere near
GINOBLIII!!!!! level yet, over the course of this series Spree will put the cuffs on him and he'll get outscored by Bruce Bowen.
So the plan is "No Drives, No Threes" (except for Tony, he can shoot jumpers all day), Kevin approves

, I get to live another day (wipes sweat of face).
The next few games I play with the utmost respect for the Spurs and as concentrated as humanly possible (not exaggerating at all

 ) and this happens:

I don't know a better way of screenshotting all the scores of a series in a single screen. All the games were close and went down to the final minute, Game 2 went into overtime and I won by a single point. This felt like this year's Spurs - Clippers series or the Spurs - Grizzlies a few years ago where San Antonio swept Memphis but all the game swere close and I believe 3 of 4 went into OT. One of the best virtual series I played, maybe even THE best (although I distinctly remember a great Shaq vs Kobe finals in 2k7, which went to 7 and I hit a Kobe game winning three in Shaq's face in one game, good times).
As you can see in the screenshot I didn't trust anybody but Garnett with the ball after that disastrous GM 1, 19 shots in 27 minutes, wow

.
Everything came together as I gradually figured out how to score efficiently with him (& later Cassell) and he usually took over the game during the final minute, doing it all, clutch drives, clutch jumpers, clutch passes and especially in GM 4 clutch defense, as he stripped Duncan two times on 1on1 post ups during the final two minutes (I just stayed in front of Timmy and cut off the way to the basket and Kevin stole the ball on his own, very nice

 ).
I really like how the auto play call system only calls plays for the teams star player during the final minute or two, for me & the AI.
Duncan was always dangerous and the focal point as usual but I'm suprised as how effective you can defend him with KG if you concentrate on not making mistakes. OTOH it felt a bit easy to score in the post with Garnett at times. I mean I often got clean dunks on simple hook drives & spin drives vs Tim Duncan! Maybe it's the game's fault as some moves are easier than others as I could replicate some of it with Gary Trent (whom I don't know well, admittedly) but in this mod Kevin Garnett is all powerful in the post. I know he was a great (if infrequent) post player in his time but his combination of skill (post moves), explosive athleticism & shooting ability seems unguardable for the AI. His physique and shooting would make him an effective scorer on the block even with mediocre moves I think, does he need that great Post Off?
Maybe it's not a problem at all it just feels overkill. But then a guy like Kobe also feels overkill because you can easily score with him in even more ways. Playing as Kobe is so fun to me because you score seamlessly, that he gets enough points in the 1st quarter for the AI to straight double him after that and then you get a new challenge, especially with a team like the '06 Lakers (who is he gonna pass to?

). With Kevin I usually only get doubled during the final minutes of the game and he has free reign before that but I'm not complaining about difficulty, I'm getting close & challenging games at All-Star afterall.
What I noticed in this series is that the AI has a hard time getting dribble penetration, it seems easier to stay in front of your man than it seems for real life defenders, I don't remember Ginobili getting by me once, but Parker and also Hart definitely did a few times and then mostly went straight for a layup with a super speedy animation, when I think about it, blow by's usually happen when there is no help defense nea the rim to block the shot, maybe the AI factors this in and doesn't try to get to the cup when there's help lurking? Often they dance around me a bit to get an semi-open jumper off the dribble rather an the layup (those 15 footers also seem more efficient than well defended layups). Anyway the drive & kick game hardly exists.
This was fun, kinda sad to see the Spurs go down so early (like this year) but we have either the Mavs or Rockets waiting for us in the Conference Semis as they're currently duking it out at 2-2.
Btw, Trenton Hassell is (/was) a defensive stopper and should have more than 70 DEF, probably around 85-90. He's just plain useless the way he's rated, can't really do anything well (I deliberately avoid passing him the ball for fear of turnovers as if he were Tragic Johnson or the Kandi Man).
