Into Darkness: A Manchester United Retro Rebuild

The summer of 2013 was supposed to be a continuation. A passing of the torch, not a breaking of it. Sir Alex Ferguson had stepped away, but the machine he built still stood — champions of England, loaded with winners, driven by a culture that demanded excellence.

Instead, what followed was the beginning of the darkness.

In reality, Manchester United turned to David Moyes. Power shifted upstairs to Ed Woodward. The transfer market became a battlefield United were no longer prepared for. Panic replaced planning. Prestige was no longer enough. The champions became chasers. Old Trafford, once a fortress, became a place of doubt.

But in this story, history does not unfold the same way.

This is a world where the warning signs are seen early. Where the club recognises that modern football demands modern thinking. Where structure, football knowledge, and long-term vision return to the heart of Manchester United.

No panic buys. No scattergun strategy. No surrendering elite standards.

This is a story of undoing mistakes before they are made. Of rebuilding power behind the scenes. Of restoring fear in Europe. Of taking back control of the narrative.

This is not just a season.
This is a reckoning.

Into Darkness — where Manchester United face the fall… and fight to prevent it.

Sir Alex Ferguson retires as Manchester United manager

Sir Alex Ferguson retires as Manchester United manager

20th May 2013.

Sir Alex Ferguson has stepped down as Manchester United manager at the end of the season after 26 years in charge.

The Scot, 71, has won 38 trophies during his reign at Old Trafford and will now become a director and ambassador for the club.

His haul includes 13 league titles, two Champions League crowns, five FA Cups and four League Cups.

"The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about. It is the right time," Ferguson said.

Everton's David Moyes is the bookmakers' favourite to take over, with Jose Mourinho, currently at Real Madrid, also tipped.

BBC sports editor David Bond says United are confident of announcing a successor to Ferguson before the weekend.

He believes they are looking for someone who understands the club's history and is committed to youth development while employing an attractive, attacking style of football.

While United look for his successor, tributes to Ferguson have been led by Prime Minister David Cameron, who tweeted:, external "Sir Alex Ferguson's achievement at #MUFC has been exceptional."

Former Manchester United and England striker Michael Owen says the Scot's managerial record will "surely never be eclipsed".

Ferguson believes the squad he leaves behind "bodes well for continued success".

His final game was against West Brom and was his 1500th in charge at United.

United co-chairman Joel Glazer says: "His determination to succeed and dedication to the club have been truly remarkable."

Chief executive David Gill says: "What he has done for this club and for the game in general will never be forgotten."

Ferguson, who will undergo hip surgery in the summer, is confident his successor will take over a club in good health after winning their 20th top-flight title.

"It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so," he said.

"The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one."

Ferguson praised the people he felt helped him build the club from a team that had not won a title for 26 years into one of the biggest in the world.

"I must pay tribute to my family, their love and support has been essential," he added. "My wife, Cathy, has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.

"As for my players and staff, past and present, I would like to thank them all for a staggering level of professional conduct and dedication that has helped to deliver so many memorable triumphs. Without their contribution the history of this great club would not be as rich.

"In my early years, the backing of the board, and Sir Bobby Charlton in particular, gave me the confidence and time to build a football club, rather than just a football team.

"Over the past decade, the Glazer family have provided me with the platform to manage Manchester United to the best of my ability and I have been extremely fortunate to have worked with a talented and trustworthy chief executive in David Gill. I am truly grateful to all of them.

"To the fans, thank you. The support you have provided over the years has been truly humbling. It has been an honour and an enormous privilege to have had the opportunity to lead your club and I have treasured my time as manager of Manchester United."

Ferguson is the most successful manager in the history of the British game and famously won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, external in 1999.

David Gill, who is also stepping down this summer after 16 years at United, revealed Ferguson had been planning to make his succession easier by putting in place a young squad and a state-of-the-art training facility at Carrington.

He said: "I've had the tremendous pleasure of working very closely with Alex for 16 unforgettable years - through the treble, the double, countless trophy wins and numerous signings.

"We knew that his retirement would come one day and we both have been planning for it by ensuring the quality of the squad and club structures are in first-class condition.

"Alex's vision, energy and ability have built teams - both on and off the pitch - that his successor can count on as among the best and most loyal in world sport.

"The way he cares for this club, his staff and for the football family in general is something that I admire. It is a side to him that is often hidden from public view but it is something that I have been privileged to witness in the last 16 years.

"What he has done for this club and for the game in general will never be forgotten. It has been the greatest experience of my working life being alongside Alex and a great honour to be able to call him a friend."

First-team coach Rene Meulensteen said: "He told us just this morning. He called us in his office and told us the decision he had taken. I think he is feeling a sense of relief in some ways now."

Owen feels taking over from Ferguson is going to be a difficult job.

Manchester United Appoint Dan Ashworth as Football Director

Manchester United Appoint Dan Ashworth as Football Director

Sky Sports News – Breaking News

Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Dan Ashworth as their new Director of Football, replacing long-serving chief executive David Gill as the club begins a new era following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ashworth, who joins from the FA where he served as Director of Elite Development, will take charge of football operations at Old Trafford with immediate effect. His appointment marks a significant structural shift for United, as the club moves toward a modern footballing model with a clear separation between executive leadership and football strategy. This was a costly hire as the English FA did not want to let Ashworth leave.

New era at Old Trafford

Ashworth’s first and most pressing task will be to lead the process of appointing Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor, after the legendary manager stepped down following 26 years in charge and a record 13 Premier League titles.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Ashworth said:

“It’s an honour to join a club of Manchester United’s stature at such a pivotal moment in its history. Sir Alex leaves behind an incredible legacy. My responsibility now is to help ensure the club continues to compete at the highest level by appointing the right manager and building a sustainable football structure for the future.”

Strategic overhaul

United sources have indicated that Ashworth will oversee:
The managerial appointment process

Long-term squad planning and recruitment strategy

Academy and pathway development

Integration between scouting, analytics, and first-team football operations
The move is seen as a major step toward modernising the club’s hierarchy, bringing United in line with Europe’s elite clubs that operate with a Director of Football model.

Ferguson replacement priority

With pre-season fast approaching, Ashworth’s immediate focus will be narrowing down candidates to replace Ferguson. A shortlist is believed to already be under discussion, with both domestic and European managers under consideration.

Outgoing CEO David Gill will remain at the club in a transitional advisory capacity, ensuring continuity as Ashworth takes control of football matters.

Sky Sports understands United are keen to make an appointment swiftly, with the aim of giving the new manager maximum preparation time ahead of the 2013–14 campaign.

Baby-Faced Assassin Returns: United Gamble on Solskjaer After Molde Miracles

Baby-Faced Assassin Returns: United Gamble on Solskjaer After Molde Miracles

Wednesday 5th June 2013.

Manchester United have stunned the football world by appointing club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their new manager — a bold and emotional gamble inspired by the Norwegian’s meteoric rise at Molde.

The former United striker, forever remembered as the man who sealed the 1999 Champions League final, returns to Old Trafford with a glowing reputation after a promising start to his managerial career in Norway.

Solskjaer, just 40, has led Molde to their first-ever league title and quickly established himself as one of Europe’s most talked-about young coaches — blending modern tactical ideas with a deep-rooted understanding of the Manchester United culture.

The appointment has been driven by new Chief Executive and Football Director Dan Ashworth, who is believed to have been impressed not only by Solskjaer’s results, but by his man-management, attention to detail and strong references from Sir Alex Ferguson himself.

Ferguson Influence Looms Large

Sources close to the club insist that Ferguson played a key advisory role in the decision, with Solskjaer viewed internally as a man who “gets Manchester United” in a way few candidates could.

One senior club source told the Daily Mail:

“Ole understands the pressure, the expectations and the standards. He has been learning his trade properly, not just waiting for a big job. Sir Alex believes he has the temperament to handle this.”

Solskjaer’s close relationship with former United staff has also been a major factor, with the Norwegian expected to retain much of the club’s trusted backroom team from the title-winning 2012–13 season to provide stability.

A Romantic Gamble — Or Inspired Move?

While supporters have welcomed the emotional pull of Solskjaer’s return, there are already question marks over whether his limited experience is enough to handle the biggest job in English football.

Managing Molde in the Norwegian league is a far cry from navigating the Premier League, Champions League and the relentless scrutiny that comes with leading Manchester United.

However, those close to the appointment argue that United are not simply chasing nostalgia — but betting on a modern coach with fresh ideas, strong values and a fierce desire to prove himself on the biggest stage. Cardiff City are one of the other clubs that interviewed him this summer.

Clear Philosophy and Transfer Backing Promised

Solskjaer is understood to have been promised a clear football structure, with Ashworth overseeing recruitment and long-term planning — a move designed to avoid the chaos and confusion that can follow major managerial transitions.

United insiders say Solskjaer has already identified key areas for reinforcement, with younger, athletic players prioritised as part of a gradual squad refresh.

In his first words as United manager, Solskjaer said:

“Manchester United is my home. I’ve learned a lot since my playing days, and I believe this club can move forward by staying true to its values while embracing modern football.”

For a club still adjusting to life after Ferguson, this is a leap of faith — one built on loyalty, belief and the hope that the Baby-Faced Assassin can once again deliver at Old Trafford.

Whether this proves to be inspired thinking or dangerous sentimentality remains to be seen.

Manchester United Complete Double Swoop for Eriksen and Carlos Casemiro

Manchester United Complete Double Swoop for Eriksen and Carlos Casemiro

Manchester United have completed a major double signing, securing the services of highly-rated midfielder Christian Eriksen from Ajax and Brazilian defensive midfielder Carlos Casemiro from Santos.

United moved swiftly to beat off strong competition from Tottenham Hotspur to land Eriksen, agreeing a deal worth £11.5 million for the Danish playmaker. The 21-year-old had been heavily linked with Spurs, but new United chief executive and football director Dan Ashworth made Eriksen a top priority as part of a new, modern recruitment strategy at Old Trafford.

Eriksen is expected to play a key creative role in United’s midfield, with club sources comparing his profile to that of Paul Scholes — a player manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær greatly admired and played with.

Alongside Eriksen, United have also completed the signing of Carlos Casemiro from Santos. The Brazilian arrives in a part-exchange deal that sees Anderson return to his native country Brazil. Casemiro has recently impressed during a loan spell with Real Madrid B, catching the eye with his physical presence, tactical discipline, and maturity beyond his years. Real Madrid are believed to be blind sided by the move.

United believe Casemiro has the potential to become a long-term anchor in midfield, providing the defensive platform to allow more creative players to flourish.

In a knock-on move, Tottenham Hotspur have responded to missing out on Eriksen by completing the signing of Shinji Kagawa from Manchester United for a fee of £8.5 million.

The double swoop represents a major statement of intent from United as Ashworth and Solskjær begin reshaping the squad with a clear focus on youth, technical quality, and long-term team building.

Roy Keane Joins Manchester United as Assistant Manager: “Our Love of United Bonds Us”

Thursday 6th Feb 2025.

Roy Keane has officially returned to Manchester United as assistant manager, reuniting with Sir Alex Ferguson in a stunning development that signals a new era at Old Trafford. The former captain, known for his fierce leadership and no-nonsense mentality, has put past differences with Ferguson aside, declaring that their mutual love for United has brought them back together.

Speaking to club media after signing his contract, Keane addressed his long-standing feud with Ferguson, which stemmed from his controversial departure in 2005. However, the Irishman made it clear that the past no longer matters.

"Our love of United bonds us," Keane said. "I can’t watch my club fall any further. When Sir Alex called, I knew I had to be here. It’s time to restore standards, restore pride, and fight for this badge again."

Keane’s arrival marks a shift in mentality at Old Trafford. Known for demanding excellence both on and off the pitch, he is expected to instill discipline and passion in a squad that has been widely criticized for its lack of leadership. Sources inside the club say he will take an active role in both training and matchday preparations, ensuring that United rediscover the intensity and hunger that defined Ferguson’s greatest teams.

With United still in the FA Cup and Europa League, Ferguson and Keane’s reunion in the dugout could be the jolt the club needs. The glory days of the past may be gone, but under this legendary duo, United will fight again.

Third Time’s a Charm: Cristiano Ronaldo Signs Short-Term Deal with Manchester United

Thursday 6th Feb 2025.

Cristiano Ronaldo is officially back at Manchester United for a third spell, signing a short-term contract until the end of the season in a stunning move. The 39-year-old forward, who recently negotiated a buyout of his Al-Nassr contract, reunites with Sir Alex Ferguson in what could be a fairytale ending to his legendary career.

Ronaldo, who scored 145 goals across his previous two stints at Old Trafford, was eager to return after Ferguson’s shock appointment as interim manager. Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports, Ronaldo said:

"Manchester United is my home. Sir Alex is my football father, and when I heard he was back, I knew I had to return. I want to help this club fight again and finish my career where it all started."

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is expected to make his debut in United’s upcoming Europa League last-16 tie, adding much-needed firepower to an attack that has struggled all season.

Mount Gives Up No.7 Shirt as Injury Ends His Season

In a symbolic gesture, Mason Mount has relinquished the iconic No.7 shirt to Ronaldo. However, the midfielder won’t get the chance to share the pitch with his new teammate, as United have confirmed he has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a serious knee injury. It’s another frustrating setback for Mount, who has endured a stop-start campaign since his summer move from Chelsea.

Luke Shaw Set to Retire After Injury Heartbreak

Meanwhile, reports suggest that Luke Shaw is considering retirement after yet another injury setback. The left-back has struggled with persistent fitness issues in recent years, and sources close to the player say he is seriously weighing up his future in professional football.

United’s season has been chaotic, but with Ferguson, Keane, and now Ronaldo back, the club is looking to restore its identity. Could this legendary trio inspire one last push for silverware?

FA Cup 3rd Round - Man Utd 2 - 0 Leicester City

Friday 7 February 2025 22:29, UK

James Tarkowski lashed in an incredible 98th-minute equaliser as Everton salvaged a dramatic 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Mohamed Salah had looked to have stolen the show when giving Liverpool the lead late in the game, completing a turnaround started when Alexis Mac Allister cancelled out Beto's early goal. But Tarkowski's rocket is the moment everyone will now remember.

Abdoulaye Doucoure and Curtis Jones both saw red in the melee that followed the final whistle as raw emotion engulfed the stadium, supporters having spilled onto the pitch after the equaliser. When the dust settles, Liverpool still sit seven points clear at the top - although Arne Slot and assistant Sipke Hulshoff were also sent off for their complaints towards referee Michael Oliver.

But it was Tarkowski and Everton who had the final say that mattered in this derby farewell to Goodison Park, the clubs now deadlocked on 41 wins apiece here for eternity.

Team Lineups

Manchester United 4-4-2: Bayindir, Mazraoui, Yoro, DeLigt, Dorgu, Garnacho, Ugarte, Fernandes (C), Amad, Hojlund, Zirkzee.

Subs: Amass, Collyer, Ronaldo, Maguire.

Leicester City 4-2-3-1: Hermansen, Justin, Faes, Okoli, Thomas, Ndidi, Soumare, De-Cordova Reid, El Khannouss, Ayew, Daka.

Subs: Winks, Coulibaly, McAteer, Buonatte.

Player of the match: Rasmus Hojlund

But Mac Allister made a late run to nod in Salah's cross soon after to level it up and when Iliman Ndiaye was forced off injured, Everton's hopes of shining brightly in the Merseyside derby farewell to Goodison Park began to lose some lustre.

And yet, Liverpool never did gain full control, Everton having the better of a bitty second half. Doucoure headed wide when well-placed. Branthwaite had a goal disallowed for an offside in the build-up. The Goodison crowd ached for a winner

Nets trade Thornton for Jack

Nets, Cavs and Celtics exchange players.

Cleveland could be giving LeBron James something to think about, thanks to the Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics.
The Cavaliers will ship guard Jarrett Jack to the Nets in a three-team trade, according to multiple reports. The deal would clear enough cap space for a serious run at James, who left Cleveland for Miami in 2010. ESPN’s Marc Stein was first to report the deal.

Brooklyn would also get Sergey Karasev, reports said. General manager Ronnie Hobbs would be giving up guard Marcus Thornton to the Boston Celtics and the rights to three prospects to the Cavaliers.

Here are the details:

Boston Celtics get: Marcus Thornton-Tyler Zeller, Cavs 2016 protected pick. Top 10 in '16, '17 or '18. Unprotected in '19.

Brooklyn Nets get: Cleveland's Jarrett Jack and Sergey Karasev.

Cleveland Cavs get: Draft rights to Nets prospects: Karaman/Drejer/Bavcic. And cap space -- more than the $20.7M needed -- to sign James.

The Cavaliers have been trying to clear enough cap space to lure a big-time free agent — James, anyone? — with a max contract. This certainly opens the door to that possibility. Or could it be to Carmelo Anthony? Keep tuned as LeBrons Decision 2.0 looms large.

James to Heat or Cavs?

Postby RMJH4 on Thu Jul 10, 2014 11:10 pm

LeBron to choose between Cavs and Heat

Image

In an juicy twist of irony, free agent LeBron James will choose between his home state team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, that he scorned four years ago by bolting to Miami, or return to the Heat.

The Cavs sure are making the effort to attract James; they will trade guard Jarrett Jack to the Brooklyn Nets in a three-team deal that will free up more money under the salary cap to offer to James. Yahoo! Sports reported that while James’ agent has met or had discussions with the Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets, the league’s premier player will either return to the Heat or rejoin the Cavaliers.

Miami president Pat Riley flew to Las Vegas, where James is hosting his annual basketball camp, to meet with the superstar on Wednesday. It was Riley who convinced James to leave his home team and chart new territory in Miami, where the Heat won two titles and made it to the NBA Finals all four of James’ years there.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Nets have agreed to take on the contracts of Jack and young player Sergey Karasey from the Cavaliers in a swap that also will see the Celtics acquire Brooklyn’s Marcus Thornton, Cleveland’s Tyler Zeller and a future first-round pick from the Cavaliers. The Cavs will have to acquire at least one future second-rounder from either Brooklyn or Boston to complete the transaction.

The moves would give the Cavaliers $21.7 million in cap space. Meanwhile, ESPN’s Chris Broussard reported that the Cavaliers are also now trying to strike a deal with Heat free agent guard Ray Allen as a means of enticing James even more into a return to Cleveland.
Riley is working, however. He reached agreements to sign center-forward Josh McRoberts and forward Danny Granger on Monday.
The meeting with Riley on Wednesday is believed to be the last meeting James has participated in since opting out of the final two years and $42 million of his Heat contract.

Phone call with Sam Presti

Postby RMJH4 on Tue Jul 15, 2014 10:02 am

Phone Rings...

"Hello Ronnie, its Sam Presti here."said Presti

"Hey Sam how are you? Didn't expect to hear from you!" said Hobbs

"Yeah I wouldnt have thought so. Have you talked to Paul and KG yet?"said Presti

"Just a little this morning. Why?" said Hobbs

Just gauging if you are keeping them and they are happy with Jason leaving." said Presti

"Yes they are fine, just wondering what direction i'm heading in. Upgrades etc, but happy enough here." said Hobbs

OK. Are you happy to stand still? I might have an intriguing offer for you. There are several different variations of this one." said Presti

"Hmm. Go on fire away Sam." said Hobbs

"Well we didnt progress how we wanted this year. Our roster doesn't fit properly anymore. I think we've hit a road block that wont be moved in San Antonio. We'd be interested in taking on Deron." said Presti

"Wow. Well with all the bad media coverage out there about his ops I didn't expect to hear that. But I'm listening" said Hobbs

"Well two ball dominant guys aren't working for us. I would like to take KG and Paul off you aswell." said Presti

"OK i see where you are going here. If you're going to offer me Russell in return I can certainly guarantee you those two guys. I really like Paul and KG, but man we could do with Westbrook over here. Any interest in a Deron and Brook package?"said Hobbs

"Lopez? Well i'm not sure. I'd have to think about that. I think Deron can hit top form with us again, but Brook i'm not sure about. Tough injury to recover from. So what i'd like is, Deron, KG, Paul and something else draft pick or international rights maybe?" said Presti

"So let me guess you are giving up Westbrook, Perkins, Collison and who? They almost match up salary wise. I'll talk to Paul about what he'd be willing to take salary wise. I think we can work something out. The Mini MLE would work out salary wise for you. 3.33 mil S&T?" said Hobbs

"Ok, let it sit with me. Em something like Perry Jones as the 4th guy? That contract would be perfect, a player option in the 2nd year too, we can resign him for more the following year." said Presti

"I think that's about even talent wise." said Hobbs

"Now we're making progress. Deron, KG, Paul (Contract Dependent) for Westbrook, Perkins, Collison and Jones. Any chance we can take next years Bucks 2nd Rounder too?" said Presti

"Hey why not! I don't really want it, you don't have much faith in J-Kidd either!" said Hobbs

"OK I'll run this through upstairs. Keep it quiet, we both could take some backlash from this one." said Presti

"I'll run it by Lionel, see what he thinks. Cheers Sam" said Hobbs

Is he serious? Russell Westbrook for anything we have? He could have the keys to the Barclays Center for him if he wanted! Wait til Lionel and Mikhail hear about this. KG and Paul will be big losses, but they are almost 40 and on the downhill. They get to join the 2nd best team in the west, they have to be interested. Daylight Robbery for me though! Its Winning Time baby!

LeBron signs with Cavs

LeBron James sign with Cavs

The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed free agent forward LeBron James, Cavaliers General Manager David Griffin announced today. Per league policy, terms of the contract were not released.

"We could not be happier to welcome LeBron James home. Yesterday, LeBron, through his essay, told us he wasn't going anywhere except Cleveland and that 'Cleveland is where he always believed he would finish his career.' These words and commitment put all of us, including LeBron, in the best position to build our franchise the right way and achieve the kind of goals we all know are possible. Expectations will be at the highest levels but no one should expect immediate and automatic success," said Griffin.

"LeBron's motivation to return home is clearly fueled by the kind of emotions and ideals that we can and should embrace. The contract and those details are secondary to his commitment to Northeast Ohio and the Cavaliers. It extends well beyond the boundaries of basketball and speak to his love and passion for his family, home, and our fans. He communicated his role and growth as a husband, father, teammate, community leader, and business person. This resonated in a special and personal way for all of us. LeBron put it well when he stated; 'In Northeast Ohio, nothing is given. Everything is earned.' We can't wait to get started and look forward to his leadership, on and off the court, for many years to come."

The Akron, Ohio native returns to the Cavaliers where he remains the franchise's leader in points scored (15,251), scoring average (27.8 PPG) field goals made (5,415) and attempted (11,403), free throws made (3,650) and attempted (4,917), steals (955) and minutes played (22,119). He also ranks second in team history in three-pointers made (771), second in assists (3,810), third in defensive rebounds (3,183), fourth in blocks (482), fifth in total rebounds (3,861) and is tied for seventh in games played (548).

An advocate for change and community responsibility, James launched the LeBron James Family Foundation in 2004 with a mission to positively affect the lives of children and young adults through education and co-curricular educational initiatives. In 2011, in partnership with the Akron Public Schools, his foundation launched its pillar program, "Wheels for Education", with its mission to improve graduation rates in Akron. In 2012, James pledged $1 million to renovate his old stomping grounds at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School as the completion of The LeBron James Arena had its ceremonial grand opening on December 14, 2013. He and his foundation also work regularly with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, renovating a local Boys and Girls Club in every All-Star host city each year, an initiative that began in 2008 in New Orleans.

James is a four-time MVP (2009, 2010, 2012, 2013), a two-time NBA champion (2012, 2013) and a two-time Olympic gold medalist (2008, 2012). The 6-8 forward has also garnered other numerous achievements over his career including: Ten-time NBA All-Star (2005--2014), two-time NBA All-Star Game MVP (2006, 2008), eight-time All-NBA First Team selection (2006, 2008--2014), two-time All-NBA Second Team selection (2005, 2007) and five-time NBA All-Defensive First Team selection (2009--2013). James was originally drafted by the Cavs with the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft and went on to earn the NBA's Rookie of the Year Award in 2003-04.
James has played in 842 games (841 starts) with career averages of 27.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 1.7 steals in 39.5 minutes per game with Cleveland and Miami. LeBron has the third highest scoring average in NBA history to go along with 37 career triple-doubles and 267 career double-doubles. He has scored in double figures on 834 occasions, including 701 games with at least 20 points, 339 games with 30-or-more points, 52 40-point performances and 10 50-plus efforts. James will begin the 2014-15 season having scored in double figures a career-high 572 consecutive games, a streak that began on Jan. 6, 2007. He has scored over 2,000 points in nine of the last 10 seasons and has averaged at least 20 points in all 11 of his NBA seasons.

This past year, James was selected to the All-NBA First Team and All-Defensive Second Team after averaging 27.1 points (ranked third in NBA) on a career-best .567 shooting from the field (fourth in NBA), 6.9 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.6 steals in 37.7 minutes over 77 games (all starts). He was the only player in the league to average at least 20 points, six rebounds and six assists. The two-time NBA Finals MVP also led Miami to its fourth straight NBA Finals appearance during the 2013-14 season. For his postseason career, he has appeared in 158 playoff contests with averages of 28.0 points, 8.4 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 1.7 steals in 42.5 minutes per game.

Blockbuster shot down by OKC

D- Will and Westbrook Blockbuster Trade shot down by OKC ownership

Image

In a trade that would have shocked the NBA world, Russell Westbrook and Deron Williams almost swapped teams. The OKC Thunder needed to make some changes to beat the NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs this coming season. Nobody could have foreseen this change. Williams looked shaky all last season for the Nets and struggled to perform consistently all season. OKC wanted to do this trade to add the championship experience of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. Incase that wasnt enough the Nets threw in the rights to Bojan Bogdanovic, the promising European player.

It was due to be a big but risky haul for the Thunder. The Nets were slated to get back the expiring contracts of post defender Kendrick Perkins, and Nick Collison. Perry Jones III was an interesting throw in. Neither Perkins nor Collison hold a lot of value for the Nets, but the Brooklyn franchise needed a major shakeup. And it looks like GM Ronnie Hobbs almost did it, but you wonder if he has been reading the Billy King handbook. He didn't give up any future draft picks (Not like they have any to give...) but adding in Bogdanovic to get the deal done could have come back to haunt them.

The Thunder on the other hand were really banking on Pierce, Williams and KG stepping up to the mark of their once outstanding careers. Their experience will be vital, but they need to contribute to make this worthwhile. An unprecedented risk by GM Sam Presti, who has still been trying to make up for the James Harden trade.
When Presti presented the trade to OKC ownership, they were at first intrigued. But when they asked Kevin Durant's opinion on the trade, it was game over for Presti. Westbrook and Durant are very close, and they believe they can win together. You have to think that Presti will be on shaky ground after this attempted trade.

Williams, Pierce, Garnett unhappy in Brooklyn

Image

With the dust settling on the failed blockbuster trade between OKC and Brooklyn, several players have been extremely unhappy. Durant on the OKC end, is sticking up for his buddy Russell Westbrook. Obviously Westy is pretty unhappy that Presti thought Deron Williams could get it done in OKC instead of him.

On the Brooklyn side, Paul Pierce who is technically out of contract was apparently only going to resign with the Nets to make this trade go through. Pierce seems set on a reunion with Doc Rivers in Los Angeles. KG is also keen to follow Doc to LA LA land and is believed to be asking GM Hobbs to find a way to make this happen.

Hobbs who is obviously disappointed his major roster shakeup has been rebuffed is said to be exhausting every avenue to give new coach Lionel Hollins more to work with. Hollins has his idea of the talent that he needs to work with and Hobbs seems to be keen to give Hollins a clean slate to work with ASAP.

Surely Brooklyn is now at risk of losing Pierce to free agency. Who else might follow him out the door?!

Livingston signs with Warriors

The Golden State Warriors have signed free agent guard Shaun Livingston to a contract, the team announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released.

Livingston, 28, appeared in a career-high 76 games with the Brooklyn Nets last season, averaging 8.3 points, 3.2 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.22 steals in 26.0 minutes per contest. The 6’7” guard established single-season career-highs for games started (54), minutes played (1,974), points scored (629), rebounds (246), and steals (93). He scored in double figures a career-high 27 times, including a career-high four games of 20-or-more points. The Nets posted a 35-19 mark with Livingston in the starting lineup and a 19-4 record when he played 31 minutes-or-more. In 12 playoff games, he averaged 9.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists, while shooting 51.2 percent from the field.

“We are very happy that Shaun made the decision to join our team,” said Warriors General Manager Bob Myers. “He is a veteran player who, we believe, adds a lot to our roster with his versatility. He possesses the size and skills to play both backcourt positions, which will provide Coach Kerr with added depth and options throughout the season.”
