Paul George headlines 2015 free agent class

Image

In between each NBA season there is a period of time in which teams can change their fortunes with a single signature. In some cases it may take three, as Miami found out. The free agency signing window is an exciting time for fans when their team has money to spend on out of contract stars. The 2015 class isn't quite as deep as it was in 2010 when the Heat united LeBron James and Chris Bosh with Dwyane Wade to create the now cliched "big three". However, there are some exciting young players coming off their rookie contracts who will attract a lot of attention and probably big money offers. There are also a number of veterans that will be looking to extend their NBA careers in the hunt for that elusive championship. Several teams could be players in the free agent market including the 76ers, Clippers, Bucks, Knicks, Suns, Lakers, Heat, Jazz and Grizzlies.

The Knicks in particular should have substantial cap room to work with during the upcoming off-season considering they will only have Tyson Chandler ($2.43m), Rocky Ledo ($1.73m), Steven Adams ($1.49m TO) and Travis McKie ($571k TO) on their books. They could really build a star-filled team after missing out on LeBron James in 2010 and having to settle for Amare Stoudemire. It's widely accepted throughout the NBA that they will be specifically targeting Paul George, Ricky Rubio and Enes Kanter in the hopes of luring them all to New York.

21/3/15

Wizards hopes of beating 1995-96 Bulls' record hangs by a thread

Image

After losing their ninth game of the season against the Nets in Brooklyn yesterday the Wizards now have a 60-9 record, meaning that they cannot afford to lose any of their remaining thirteen games if they hope to break the Bull's amazing 72-10 record from the 1995-96 season.

Wizards' remaining games

vs Jazz (Enes Kanter, David West, Gerald Green, Eric Gordon, Nate Robinson)
Utah are struggling out west and shouldn't cause too much trouble for the Wizards. They look likely to land a top 5 pick in the upcoming draft.
Season series: Wizards lead 1-0

vs Heat (Chris Bosh, Udonis Haslem, Michael Beasley, Dwyane Wade, Aaron Brooks)
The Heat have been dreadful since LeBron left, but have added Beasley since they last played Washington. It should still be a win against one of the worst teams in the league though.
Season series: Wizards lead 2-0

@ Bobcats (Andrew Bogut, Al Jefferson, Carmelo Anthony, Victor Oladipo, Tony Parker)
The Bobcats have a team stacked with talent and are furiously chasing that eighth seed. Even after adding Bogut and Parker the Wizards still narrowly beat them.
Season series: Wizards lead 3-0

vs Hawks (Al Horford, Thaddeus Young, Kawhi Leonard, Louis Williams, Trey Burke)
The Wizards have won all three meetings with the Hawks this season and with this being a home game they should come out on top again.
Season series: Wizards lead 3-0

@ Magic (Nikola Vucevic, Julius Randle, LeBron James, Shabazz Muhammad, Rajon Rondo)
This road game in Orlando could be the toughest in this stretch for Washington. Orlando are under-performing for their talent level, but are a real threat to anyone who will face them in the playoffs.
Season series: Wizards lead 2-1

@ Mavericks (Nikola Pekovic, Dirk Nowitzki, Danny Granger, Monta Ellis, Darren Collison)
Dallas are clinging on to a playoff berth in Dirk's final season and could be a tricky opponent for the Wizards in Texas. Wiggins dropped 62 on them on March 1st though and will be looking to do it again.
Season series: Wizards lead 1-0

@ Spurs (Dwight Howard, Josh Smith, Vince Carter, Nick Young, Chris Paul)
The western contenders look a tough opponent on paper, but Wizards have done well recently against them thanks to their bench depth. Washington won by 34 last time they met.
Season series: Wizards lead 1-0

@ Cavaliers (JaVale McGee, Aaron Gordon, Danilo Gallinari, Klay Thompson, Kyrie Irving)
Cleveland recently added Thompson to partner Kyrie, but Wizards have their own deadly backcourt duo in Wall and Beal. Could be a shoot-out in Ohio.
Season series: Wizards lead 2-0

@ Bulls (Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson, Jabari Parker, Jimmy Butler, Derrick Rose)
Danger game for Washington. Derrick Rose has averaged 45 points in his last three games against the Wizards and they don't seem to have and answer for him.
Season series: Wizards lead 2-1

vs Bucks (Cody Zeller, Royce White, LeBryan Nash, OJ Mayo, Brandon Knight)
The Bucks are in the tanking race for the top pick and as such will likely offer little resistance, especially in Washington.
Season series: Wizards lead 2-0

vs Celtics (Willie Cauley-Stein, Jared Sullinger, Tobias Harris, Avery Bradley, Marcus Smart)
Bosotn currently lead that race for the top pick and with a team of young players shouldn't be much of an obstacle for the Wizards.
Season series: Wizards lead 2-0

vs Cavaliers (JaVale McGee, Aaron Gordon, Danilo Gallinari, Klay Thompson, Kyrie Irving)
The Cavs will have a tough time facing Wizards in Washington as they will want to win for their fans in their last regular season home game.
Season series: Wizards lead 2-0

@ Heat (Chris Bosh, Udonis Haslem, Michael Beasley, Dwyane Wade, Aaron Brooks)
The Heat should put up more of a fight in front of their home fans, but the Wizards should close out the season with another win.
Season series: Wizards lead 2-0

Wizards head to Miami with history within their grasp

Image

The 2014-15 Washington Wizards have already had a historic season and they head to Miami tomorrow with a chance to stand alone amongst the greatest regular season teams in NBA history. They tied the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls' seemingly untouchable 72 win mark with a nail-biting 100-99 win against the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Verizon Center last night. Led by reigning MVP John Wall, who had 26 points, 8 rebounds and 12 assists, the Wizards sent their home crowd into delirium as the final buzzer sounded and they had outlasted an epic second half fightback from the Cavs. They are now level with the most wins in NBA history with 72 and still have a game left to play in which they can take the record outright.

Wizards owner Ahmad al-Sayed, who bought the team last November, was present to watch his team equal the historic mark and after the game expressed his delight, "It is such an amazing achievement and the atmosphere in the arena was so special. They [Cavs] really fought back in the second half, but we maintained our composure and got the important win." Mr al-Sayed was particularly glowing in his praise of his star point guard, "John Wall was phenomenal once again for us. For me he is the MVP again this season because his form has been consistently high all season. Sure, he may not score as much as perhaps LeBron [James] or [Kevin] Durant, but he is our leader on the court and with our amazing season I just can't see how the judges could look past him." Wall is averaging nearly 19 points and 13 assists per game and is the overwhelming favourite to win back-to-back MVP honours.

General manager Steve Kerr had mixed feelings after the game, having been part of the Bulls team that previously held the record. "Firstly, I'm just so proud of this group of guys. I remember how hard it was to achieve this as a player and these guys have been fantastic all season. I think a tiny part of me would be happy if we lost in Miami and shared the record with my Bulls team, but I honestly would be delighted if my guys can get the record for themselves." Asked whether either Michael Jordan or Scottie Pippen had contacted him about the record Kerr responded, "Well, both guys contacted me about a month ago and were actually pretty complimentary about the team. They did kind of jokingly suggest that if it gets close I should rest Wall and Cousins for a few games before the playoffs [laughs]."

Whether the Wizards can beat the Heat or not, they will need to win the championship now to truly be held in similar regard as the Bulls team led by Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman which won the title and finished the season with a combined regular season and playoff record of 87-14. The Wizards have already taken one record off the Bulls though in the form of the most road wins in a season. They currently have a 36-4 road record, which eclipses the Bulls' 33-8 from their record season, and the trip to Miami tomorrow gives them the chance to increase their record to 37-4. They have actually been better on the road this season than at home (36-5). Given this fact it is unlikely that they will fear traveling to any arena during the playoffs.

The Heat have been a shambles this season following the departure of superstar LeBron James over the off-season. The loss of the best player in the world has seen them have an astonishing fall from grace. In less than twelve months they have gone from NBA champions to contenders for the first overall pick. Washington will secretly be delighted to have the chance to create history against the Heat in Miami after they ended the Wizards' playoff dreams last season. It would be the perfect revenge for the Wizards after failing to capitalise on a 61 win season last year. Don't expect Miami to just rollover and allow the Wizards to take the game though. They have already secured the third worst record in the league thanks to an amazing tank effort after the all-star break and will want to put up a good effort in front of their home fans to close out the season. They have nothing to gain from losing and nothing to lose from going toe-to-toe with the Wizards. Veteran Dwyane Wade in particular will probably want to prove a point after many experts this season have commented that Bradley Beal has surpassed him as one of the top shooting guards in the league.

Whatever happens at American Airlines Arena tomorrow night, it's safe to say that Kerr has accomplished what he set out to do only 31 months ago. The Wizards are relevant for the first time since the 1970's and with a young core could be a powerhouse for the next several years if their new wealthy owner puts his hand in his wallet to keep this team together. With an amazing 133 wins in the past two seasons, Washington have shown that they are the kings of the eastern conference during the regular season. Now they have to show everyone that they can produce the needed results in the heat of the playoffs and secure only their second championship in franchise history.

I bet you'll do it, the current Heat team shouldn't pose much of a threat.
