I hope so. I'm actually excited about my chances with the team I've put together. The building phase is over and the pressure for success is now on. LeBron leaving Miami certainly gives me a better shot at a title, although his Magic team will be very good in a couple of years.

Lately I've been playing GT5 and FIFA, but should get back into this soon enough. (Y)

You've landed Wiggins! Nice. Being a Toronto native myself, I have some invested interest in seeing how he performs. Good luck!

Nice (Y) Great job by Andrew Wiggins. Once you get a few more essential role players in place, and wait a couple more years for potential, I can see you winning it all.

That Beal, Wiggins and Wall trio are looking incredibly promising. That trio is reminiscent of Durant, Harden and Westbrook, there's just so much firepower from the perimeter. Plus you have Cousins and Noel to compliment them on the inside as well, that's a super stacked starting 5. It's championship or bust!

Report: Wizards sold to Qatari group

Image

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver today announced that the NBA's Board of Governors have voted unanimously to approve the sale of the Washington Wizards to the Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) group. QSI is a branch of the emirate’s sovereign wealth fund, headed by Ahmad al-Sayed.

Ted Leonsis, as chairman and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, is believed to have accepted an offer of around $500 million for the franchise. The new owners assume ownership of the Verizon Center as part of the deal. The telecommunications company's naming rights deal for the 18,500 capacity arena will be retained by QSI, but they may look to use one of their own companies for the naming rights after the current deal expires to help them with their worldwide plan of raising awareness of their national brand, especially ahead of the 2022 football World Cup in Qatar.

QSI recently purchased French football team Paris Saint-Germain and invested heavily to turn them into a force in Europe. They have spent more than $500 million on buying players, which indicates that any threat of luxury tax penalties for the Wizards won't be a problem. It seems that the Wizards will follow a similar path to that of the Mikhail Prokhorov owned Nets and look to keep as much talent on their roster as possible, no matter the cost.

Qatari owned TV station Al-Jazeera is expected to negotiate a deal with the Wizards to broadcast every game live into the middle east. Any deal could rival the Lakers' 20-year $3 billion deal that was signed in 2012 with Time Warner Cable.

Supposedly the key factors in choosing the Wizards as the NBA team to purchase were the team's location in the nation's capital and the possibility of future success due to a talented playing roster. Adding value to the team were the fact that the team finished with the second best record in the league last season, star point guard John Wall was named the league's most valuable player and college phenomenon Andrew Wiggins was recently drafted with the top pick in the 2014 draft.

Many experts have compared the hype around this group to the Oklahoma City Thunder when Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, James Harden and Serge Ibaka were first coming into the league together. The only difference is that Washington now has the ability to keep their group together.

The recent on-court success and this ownership change is all a bit hard to believe for even the most die-hard Wizards fan. Things are looking up for the team that was a laughing stock for most of the previous decade. They made the playoffs for the first time in seven years (only to be bundled out by LeBron James and the Heat) and have started this season with ten wins from eleven games.

-----

All of the ownership dealings obviously haven't affected general manager Steve Kerr as he revealed today that he had agreed a deal with Oklahoma City GM Sam Presti that will see the Wizards land young forward Perry Jones. In return the Thunder receive veteran Antawn Jamison and a 2015 first round pick. The pick is believed to be the one secured by Washington in the draft day trade which saw DeMar DeRozan join the Pistons.

Kerr was pleased with the deal, "Perry is a great acquisition for us. He's a young guy who is eager to prove himself in the league and he can play a big role for us off the bench. We needed some cover for [Noah] Vonleh whilst he recovers from his injury."

The 23 year old forward can cover both the power forward and small forward positions and was a member of the Thunder's 2013 championship team.

New Wizards owner outlines grand plan

Image

New Washington Wizards owner Ahmad al-Sayed sat down with ESPN's Chris Broussard today and gave his first interview.

Chris Broussard: Mr al-Sayed, welcome to the NBA. What made you decide to become the owner of an NBA team?

Ahmad al-Sayed: Thank you. Well, as you may be aware we have been expanding our business into global sports in recent years and owning a team in the most popular basketball league in the world seemed like a logical move for us.

CB: Ok, so why the Wizards?

AaS: Obviously there are numerous reasons for choosing the Wizards franchise over the rest, but mainly we just saw the opportunity to own a team full of young talented players who we believe are on the verge of achieving something special.

CB: So it wasn't just a financial decision? On court success matters to you as well?

AaS: Of Course! Who would buy a team and not care how they are performing?

CB: Good point.

AaS: Actually, if anything, having the team be successful is the best way to have a healthy financial situation with any sporting team. So naturally we intend to make our team as successful as possible. We'll provide all the resources necessary to create a winning team.

CB: So you intend to invest heavily in player contracts with the Wizards?

AaS: Yes and no. We want to give the coaching staff the personnel to compete at the absolute highest level, but we certainly won't be giving ridiculous contracts to players just for the sake of it.

CB: You have Cousins and Wall already locked into long term deals and guys like Beal, Noel and Wiggins to think about in the future, should we expect to see any of them leave now that the team seemingly has the ability to keep them all?

AaS: Well, it's probably too early to say because it also depends on what the players want to do. We feel that this group has a big future together and intend to do whatever we can to keep them together for as long as possible.

CB: Do you have any specific goals for the team in the next few years?

AaS: I think we'd like to win a championship in the next three years. I think that is a realistic goal for us.

CB: How much do you personally know about the players on your team?

AaS: I can't lie and say I watched a lot of NBA games in the past, but I've certainly kept an eye on the playoffs in recent years. I actually watched a fair few Miami Heat games last season to follow LeBron James and in the playoff series against the Wizards I was really impressed with John Wall. I'd heard that he had won the most valuable player award buy hadn't really seen him play live. It was a great surprise to me to see someone be so dominant in a game against Miami. Obviously now I'm delighted that he is playing for my team.

CB: How about Andrews Wiggins? A lot of people are calling him the new LeBron.

AaS: Well, again, I had heard his name being mentioned a lot as an amazing young college player but hadn't seen him play. But once we started negotiations with Mr Leonsis to buy the team, I decided to watch as many Wizards games as possible. Andrew seems to be fitting in nicely to the NBA and doesn't seem to be feeling the pressure of being the top pick. I think he can become a great player in the history of the NBA if he maintains his work ethic and desire.

CB: There has been talk of a deal with Al Jazeera to broadcast Washington games exclusively into the Middle East. Is this true and how much will the contract be worth?

AaS: Firstly, I don't like to discuss details of deals before they are done, but yes we are in talks over a deal. We feel we can really grow the Wizards brand and that of the NBA in general by giving millions in that region access to live games and more content.

CB: Could it rival the $3 billion deal the Lakers have with Time Warner Cable?

AaS: We'll have to wait and see. Perhaps. (Laughs)

CB: Former owner Ted Leonsis was a very hands on guy. He would sit on the sidelines during games and cheer the team on. Will you have a similar approach?

AaS: Unfortunately I am a very busy man, but I do hope to attend at least one game every month.

CB: Finally, who do you see as your biggest rivals for the championship this season?

AaS: There are many quality teams this year. I think Oklahoma City and San Antonio are favourites right now. They just have experienced superstar players and winning mentalities. I think Philadelphia, Detroit and Houston are just behind in terms of talent. Then I think Cleveland and Orlando are in a similar position to us with lots of young talented players. Of course you can't write off Orlando this season as long as LeBron is healthy and playing well.

CB: Thank you for your time Mr al-Sayed.

AaS: My pleasure.

Shortly after this interview was aired Wizards general manager Steve Kerr pulled the trigger on two deals which are meant to give his team a stronger bench.

First he sent Tayshaun Prince, Greivis Vasquez and their 2015 first round pick to Miami in exchange for Mario Chalmers and Mike Miller. Both Prince and Miller are on expiring contracts. Kerr revealed that he was delighted to add Chalmers to the team after he had been part of the Heat's 2014 championship winning team. "To have a guy who just last year was a starter in the champion team, now backing up John [Wall] is very cool", he said.

Miami are in strange position. They aren't rebuilding because they've recently re-signed both Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to lucrative long term contracts, but they also aren't expected to retain their title after superstar LeBron James left to join their rivals the Orlando Magic in the Summer. Chalmers had fallen behind Aaron Brooks as starting point guard so in this deal they shed a fair bit of salary and gain another draft pick. Prince should also provide much needed cover for young small forward Alex Poythress.

Next he agreed the return of former Wizards player Emeka Okafor in a deal which sent Daequan Cook and Kosta Koufos to the Bucks. The former number two pick had been with the Bucks for three seasons and Kerr dumped his monster contract to gain cap room. Now the 32 year old is back on a slightly less expensive deal (2yr, $6.5m) and a solid backup for DeMarcus Cousins.

Milwaukee have fallen into relative obscurity again after making the 2011 NBA Finals and this deal was all about shedding salary. Okafor was third in line behind Kendrick Perkins and Ekpe Udoh in their rotation. Koufos had shown glimpses of being a decent NBA player for the Wizards this year and should be a handy backup for the Bucks. Cook may find playing time hard to come by though as he'll have Monta Ellis and JJ Redick to contend with.

I like your team, it's got a nice mix of veterans and young players that teams usually need in order to win in the playoffs. The bench has some strong utility players but I don't see any offensive firepower coming from there. That might be your Achilles heel.

That's why I brought in Chalmers, Miller and Okafor. None of them will likely reach 10 points in most games, but I feel they offer more than Prince, Koufos, Vasquez and Cook did.

That Celtics win was my 12th in a row after losing the season opener against the Blazers. I'm still behind the 76ers (14-1) though because they are on their own 11 game winning run.

Next game for me is against Dwight, CP3 and Josh Smith and their (13-2) western-conference-leading Spurs. :cheeky:

Howard, Paul and Smith just never got into the game. They kept going to Nick Young as their first option.

Paul - 8pts, 4ast (4-14 fg, 0-3 3pt)
Smith - 6pts, 4reb, 1ast, 1blk (2-9 fg)
Howard - 10pts, 5reb, 2stl (5-9 fg)

Vonleh finally played after getting injured early in the season. He scored most of his points in garbage time, but looks handy. :)

The trio of Parker, Wiggins and Randle will be very fun to follow, I'm glad you have Wiggins, whose ceiling is the highest.

I actually watched the two college games that those 3 were involved in the other day. All three look like they have big futures.

I'm happy that I lucked into the top pick and landed Wiggins. I wouldn't have been unhappy sliding a few picks down though as it was a deep draft and I already had lots of talent on my team.

Lots of pressure to win a championship (or five) though with two #1 picks (Wall + Wiggins), a #2 pick (Noel), a #3 pick (Beal) and a #5 pick (Cousins) in my starting line-up.

Nice to see guys like Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson, Nikola Vucevic, Kenneth Faried and Derrick Williams staying in smaller markets for the long term. Even if the Timberwolves did offer way too much to keep Williams.

Can't really understand the Kings offer to Fredette though. They already gave a big contract (5yr/$37m) to Isaiah Thomas last season. Plus they've got two younger (and arguably better) point guard prospects in Ryan Harrow and Andrew Harrison on their roster.

The league leaders in scoring is interesting... 4 out of the 5 players in there are guards and Louis Williams is a bit of a combo guard as well.

Realistically speaking, the day that Jennings leads the league in scoring is when he'll probably be able to get the green light to shoot 35 long twos per game.
