Assigning roles

Postby Andrew on Mon Oct 27, 2003 9:29 pm

I've been watching some Bulls vs Knicks games from the early 90s (their first round matchup in the 1991 playoffs, to be precise), and I was reminded of how Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan did a majority of the ballhandling, even though Pax was the point guard on that squad.

I think it would be a cool idea to assign roles depending on your lineup in NBA Live. Obviously you can do that already, to a certain extent at least. But I think there would be an advantage to assigning various roles to your players. For example, if you wanted your small forward to be your primary ballhandler and playmaker, he'd stay back to receive the inbounds pass and bring the ball up the floor after the other team scores, or get in a good position to receive the pass when inbounding in the front court.

Similarly, a player could be chosen to inbound the ball more often than other players on your team. Actually, it would be great to be able to designate who you wanted to inbound the ball, but just having the ability to have a player inbound the ball more frequently (rather than always having the small forward inbound) would still be useful.

You could also designate a player as your primary scorer and go to guy. This player would make himself available for game winning shots, would frequently get in a position to score, and wouldn't inbound the ball unless required or desired.

These settings would also be present for CPU teams, and perhaps could be altered by a little DBF editing, though automatic changes should occur in the event of roster moves or injury. I think that would make things interesting, with teams playing like their real life counterparts and forcing you to come up with a different game plan depending on your opponent. It would also ensure that the right players are the first option on offense.

Needless to say, whether it's a CPU or Human controlled team, it should vary depending on what's happening. If the leading scorer is absent, is having an off-night or someone else is simply having a career game, then the game plan could change on the fly.

Your thoughts? Anything to add? :)
