Would it be possible to manually force it by switching the iff files? It would require switching them back otherwise the jerseys are going to be messed up for other modes, but perhaps that's a possible solution.

Well, if you switch the .iff files for a retro jersey and the current home jersey for example, it's going to affect all modes including ones where you can actually select which jersey you want the team to wear.

I'm thinking you could do that, you'd just need to change it back afterwards.

I'll probably catch some of it but I'm driving down to Sydney this afternoon for a New Year's Eve party so I'll have to record it and see how it ends tomorrow.
