2012 NBA DRAFT - LOTTERY1st ROUND (LOTTERY)Stern: “With the 1st pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves select Jaime Buford from Vanderbilt University.”
1. Minnesota: SF- Jaime Buford, Vanderbilt, Sr, 6'8", 230lbsX: “The 2012 National Player of the Year goes number one. He apparently really impressed the Wolves' brass in a workout and interview last week, so much so that they weren't willing to risk not getting him at three. Whilst he's played four years of Division One college, Jaime Buford still has tremendous upside. He's a strong all-round player who excels defensively and will really help the Timberwolves push up the Western Conference ranks.
There was a lot of talk in the leadup to the draft that the Wolves' need of a centre would dictate that Arkansas' Jesse Brown was the obvious pick, but when you're picking at number one you pick the best player with the best upside, as simple as that. The Timberwolves definitely got themselves a winner with this pick, your thoughts Stephen E.?”
Stephen E. Smith: “I actually think Colorado's Franklin Fleming is the best player in this draft but since the Wolves already have umpteen power forwards, I can understand them going with Buford, although Brown would fill their biggest need. Funny thing with this pick is that Buford might not even start in Minnesota. When was the last time a number one pick didn't start? The answer, Andrea Bargnani in 2006 and Kwame Brown in 2001. That's the only two number one overall picks who didn't start the majority of their games as a rookie. Both those drafts were about as weak as this one, so read into this as you will.”
X: “Interesting tidbit there Stephen E. I see you've been doing your research. Looks like Commissioner Stern is heading to the podium for a special announcement. It looks like a trade.”
Stern: “We have a trade to announce. The Phoenix Suns have traded the rights to their second overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, along with the contract of Hedo Turkoglu, to the New York Knicks for Anthony Randolph and Timothy Mozgov.”
[MADISON SQUARE GARDEN GOES CRAZY WITH FANS HUGGING, HIGH FIVING EACH OTHER AND CHEERING SO LOUDLY THAT YOU CAN'T HEAR YOURSELF THINK]Stern: “The New York Knicks will pick next.”
TRADE:
NYK receives: #2 Pick in 2012 NBA Draft, SF- Hedo Turkoglu
Pho receives: SF- Anthony Randolph, C- Timothy MozgovStephen E. Smith: “THE NEW YORK KNICKS ARE BACK IN THE BUILDING!!! YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST. THE NEW KNICKS ARE BACK IN THE BUILDING!!! DONNIE WALSH HAS JUST PROVED HIMSELF TO BE THE BEST GM IN THE GAME TODAY. HE JUST FLEECED SARVER AND COMPANY. WE GOT THAT PICK WITH CHICKEN FEED. WE DIDN'T NEED TO MORTGAGE OUR FUTURE. WHAT DID WE GIVE UP? SOME SKINNY KID WHO CHARLES OAKLEY WOULD USE TO FLOSS HIS TEETH AND SOME RUSSIAN GUY WHO'S NEVER PICKED UP A BASKETBALL IN HIS LIFE. LISTEN TO THAT CROWD. THE BEST SPORTS LOVING CITY IN THE WORLD, NYC BABY!!!”
X: “I'd have to agree with you there Stephen E., the Knicks definitely fleeced the Suns. Obviously Phoenix was once again cutting costs and did the deal to offload Hedo Turkoglu's toxic contract. A sad day for fans in the Valley of the Suns but a joyous one for the long suffering Knicks' fans. Stephen E., who have you got New York taking with this pick? They seem to have a hole in the centre and Jesse Brown could definitely fill that void.”
Stephen E. Smith: “I don't think they can lose with this pick X. They either go with best prospect in the draft in Franklin Fleming and just play him next to Amar'e, or they take Brown. Both players are strong defensively, which is key for the Knicks. For me, I'd like to see New York to take Jesse Brown. He's the tough SOB that the city of New York has missed inside since Charles Oakley left. God knows they need that toughness back before teams like the Heat take them seriously.”
X: “I guess we won't have to wait any longer, Commissioner David Stern is approaching the podium.”
Stern: “With the 2nd pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the New York Knicks select Franklin Fleming from the University of Colorado.”
2. New York: PF- Franklin Fleming, Colorado, Sr, 6'9", 217lbsX: “Looks like Knicks go with best available prospects and will sort out logistics later. Fleming is a 6'9" power forward with a nice wingspan that he uses to cause havoc close to the rim at both ends of the court. He's a good athlete but not a great one. I liken him to Joe Smith, when the Warriors picked him out of Maryland back in 1995. He's going to be a solid player at the very least, potentially an All-Star and the best player in this draft class if he can reach his ceiling.”
Stephen E. Smith: “Joe Smith?!? Way to try to upset many of the Knicks' fans here. Not the comparison I was looking for. I like the pick. Brown was probably the safer pick but the Knicks like to take a few gambles on draft night and him and Amar'e could be a great 1-2 frontcourt punch for years to come.”
X: “Minnesota is up. Let's see what Kahn does with their second lottery pick.”
Stern: “With the 3rd pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves select Jesse Brown of the University of Arkansas.”
3. Minnesota: C- Jesse Brown, Arkansas, Jr, 6'10", 234lbsX: “Great pick for the Wolves. They picked the best available talent and also their position of greatest need. Brown might not start straight away but he will get solid minutes straight away because of his work on the defensive end and working the boards. He will add much needed depth to the centre position, where coach Triano has been forced to play Svensson slightly out of position for much of last season. Brown has great basketball IQ and is only going to get better.”
Let's cut back across to the draft stage where Commissioner Stern is about to announce the Kings' pick.”
Stern: “With the 4th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Tracy Lee of the University of California.”
4. Sacramento: SF- Tracy Lee, California, Sr, 6'8", 220lbsX: “Big surprise here. Many thought the Kings would take one of the many solid point guards at this spot. Lee is a defensive specialist who can defend both forward spots. He's going to bring you steals, blocked shots, floor burns and a lot of energy. Think of him as a rich man's version of Renaldo Balkman meets Chris Andersen.”
Stephen E. Smith: “Bad pick. Bad, bad, bad pick. As I said earlier, there's only about five good prospects in this draft. If you're picking at four, it's a guarantee, no? The Kings should have drafted Burks or Andrew and/or traded the pick. I'm not going to waste my time discussing the Kings anymore. Outside of those few good years about a decade ago, the Kings as a franchise have sucked. This pick pretty much sums up everything wrong with them.”
X: “We now cross back to David Stern on the Draft Stage, with the Portland Trailblazers on the clock with the 5th pick.”
Stern: “With the 5th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Portland Trailblazers select Gordon Burks from the University of Pennsylvania.”
5. Portland: PF- Gordon Burks, Penn, Jr, 6'8", 236lbsX: “Great pick by the Blazers. Burks is the guy they wanted all along and he just fell into their laps. He's a bit undersized but has drawn comparisons to Elton Brand and Zach Randolph, that's how highly GM's think of him. Many GM's rated him the best power forward in the draft, ahead of Colorado's Franklin Fleming, whom went number two to the Knicks. Burks has good upside and high basketball IQ, but you wouldn't expect anything else from somebody who went to an Ivy League school and graduated a year early. Burks is going to get playing time straight away as a backup to LaMarcus Aldridge and will play next to him at times. He's going to give the team a chance to re-tool and press for a playoff berth in the West. Thoughts Stephen E.?”
Stephen E. Smith: “Can’t argue with you there X on Burks. Although calling them a potential playoff team is laughable. They are once again stinking up the Pacific Northwest and have gone downhill with Brandon Roy's knees and toxic contract.”
X: “The Brooklyn Nets are up next. They picked up Leslie Berry last year so seems unlikely they'll look at BYU's Andrew Andrew. I'm thinking they'll lean more towards a backup point guard and future successor for Devin Harris.”
Stern: “With the 6th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Brooklyn Nets select Max Gomez from the University of Texas.”
6. New Jersey: PG- Max Gomez, Texas, Sr, 6'3", 190lbsX: “A solid pick for the Nets. Widely considered the best point guard in the college game, Gomez has good size for a point guard, he's a good defender, he'll make the right plays and he's tough as nails. He may seem unlikely to ever make the All-Star team, but I expect him to have a long career ahead of him. What's your take Stephen E.?”
Stephen E. Smith: “They like them tough in Brooklyn and Gomez won't disappoint. Sure he won't make them a playoff team but hey, the Nets never are.”
X: “The Detroit Pistons are up next.”
Stern: “With the 7th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Detroit Pistons select Andrew Andrew from Brigham Young University.”
7. Detroit: SG- Andrew Andrew, BYU, Sr, 6'7", 205lbsX: “The crowd likes this pick. All-American Andrew Andrew electrified the nation as a senior and the Mormon Nation really got behind him. He's got a cult following and regardless of how he plays as a rookie, the Pistons will sell more tickets. I don't expect him to start for Detroit but he'll get his fair share of opportunities along the way.”
Stephen E. Smith: “He's a top five talent in this draft. What would I say to this kid? Good luck, that's what I'd say. Good luck living in Detroit. You're not in Utah anymore Andrew Andrew. What kind of name is that anyways? Did his parents run out of ideas for kid's names?”
X: “I've stopped trying to understand or explain some names. Whilst we're on the topic Stephen E., what does the E stand for?”
Stephen E. Smith: “Never you mind X. 76ers are up."
Stern: “With the 8th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select Willis Lewis of Louisiana State University.”
8. Philadelphia: SG- Willis Lewis, LSU, Jr, 6'3", 210lbsX: “Very unusual pick. He'll be behind two very good young shooting guards in Evan Turner and Ciro Nunez, so he won't play. Unless this pick is for someone else, which seems unlikely, seems a wasted pick. Philadelphia would've been better grabbing somebody like Arkansas power forward Mark McCloud and bolster up their frontline more. The guard situation was already fine between Turner, Nunez, Holiday and Louis Williams.
Let's see if Sacramento can do any better with their second lottery pick.”
Stern: “With the 9th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Thierry Trichet from Argentina and France.”
9. Sacramento: PG- Thierry Trichet, France, 6'3", 185lbsX: “The Kings fill a hole at point guard. Trichet will battle Aussie Patrick Mills for the starting point guard spot. This marks the second straight year that the Kings have selected a point guard in the lottery. They will be hoping that the Thierry pick helps fans forget about the team taking Washburn last year. I preferred Hasselhoff over Trichet, but the Kings must think that the Frenchmen is a better fit.
The Spurs are up for the first lottery pick since they took Tim Duncan with the first pick in the 1997 NBA Draft. Naturally they won't be getting a player of his calibre, but they've drafted well in the past, so let's see what they can do.”
Stern: “With the 10th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs select Franklin Murray of the University of Oregon.”
10. San Antonio: SF- Franklin Murray, Oregon, Sr, 6'10", 233lbsX: “The Spurs add a stretch 3, which they haven't had since Robert Horry retired. I thought they might go with Christophe Hasselhoff with this pick to get a backup for Tony Parker, but they elected to try and find some frontcourt help for Duncan. A solid pick.
Ahh Stephen E., nice of you to re-join us. Is that what I think it is? Are you eating Cheez Doodles?”
Stephen E. Smith: “A man's gotta eat.”
X: “Memphis are up next, at number 11."
Stern: “With the 11th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Memphis Grizzlies select Mark McCloud of the University of Arkansas.”
11. Memphis: PF- Mark McCloud, Arkansas, Jr, 6'8", 240lbsX: “A nice pickup late in the lottery. McCloud will back up last year's pick Dion Baylor, whom Stephen E. called a loser last year.”
Stephen E. Smith: “Why do you keep bringing up the past. If you want to talk about the Grizzlies and the past, present and future, well they stink, as simple as that. A waste of my time even discussing them.”
X: “We wouldn't want to do that now, would we? Stern is coming out now to announce Indiana's pick.”
Stern: “With the 12th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Indiana Pacers select Christophe Hasselhoff from Augsburg, Germany.”
12. Indiana: PG- Christophe Hasselhoff, Germany, 6'2", 175lbsX: “Seems like a rather large contingent of German fans are at Madison Square Garden tonight. They've got their David Hasselhoff paddle stick faces on display to show their approval. Whilst they might be jovial to see 'The Hov' go in the lottery, it's a bit strange where he ended up. You see the Pacers already have three point guards under contract (Darren Collison, Ramon Sessions and T.J. Ford). Whilst I project a good career for Hasselhoff, he doesn't appear to have a chance to get any minutes for the foreseeable future. Your thoughts Stephen E.?”
Stephen E. Smith: “Larry Bird has been talking too much to David Kahn. I HAVE NO OTHER EXPLANATION.”
X: “Detroit are on the clock. They are probably disappointed Hasselhoff got picked up one spot before they picked but there are still a few pretty good point guards available."
Stern: “With the 13th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Detroit Pistons select Marvin Hale from Miami University of Ohio.”
13. Detroit: PG- Marvin Hale, Miami (OH), Sr, 6'3", 181lbsX: “This is a great pickup late in the lottery. The Pistons continue to retool their backcourt and take the best available player. Just like Andrew Andrew, senior point Hale is a great leader and slid further down than he probably should have. Some GM's rank him as the top point guard prospect in the draft, yet he's the fourth taken. Hale has been compared to Steve Nash, but I think that's because of the similarity of their mid-major backgrounds. Hale's upside isn't as high as Nash's, although even if he's a poor man's version, in this draft the Pistons would have to consider themselves winners. Stephen E.?”
Stephen E. Smith: “SINCE WHEN IS MIAMI IN OHIO? SHAME THE CAVS DIDN'T CONVINCE LEBRON JAMES TO TAKE HIS TALENTS TO OHIO'S VERSION OF SOUTH BEACH.”
X: “In the end it didn't turn out to bad for the Cavs. They were the 2011/12 NBA Champions.
Minnesota are up next, as they make their third and final lottery pick. They've done pretty well so far. Let's see what Kahn has in store for us.”
Stern: “With the 14th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves select Dwight Woolridge from the University of Kansas.”
14. Minnesota: PG- Dwight Woolridge, Soph, 6'5", 172lbsStephen E. Smith: “KAHN!!! He couldn't help himself. He can't seem to go a draft without selecting a point guard. I'm sure he'll have some sort of spin on the pick and why it's so great, but to me this reeks of Reece Gaines all over again.”
X: “Indeed an interesting pick by Kahn given the Timberwolves' point guard depth. This could suggest a trade is on its way as otherwise it's a horrible pick. I thought the Wolves might take South Carolina swingman Richard Sharpe or maybe Penn small forward Brandon Payton.
Word is that Kahn fell in love with Woolridge's size at the point guard position and envisions being able to play him next to Floyd Bradley at times, and have Woolridge defend the opposing team's shooting guard. Woolridge is a steady point guard who makes smart decisions. Many thought he should have stayed in college for another season but being a lottery pick vindicates his early departure from Lawrence.”
