Summer of Free Agents 2011
One of the biggest FA acquisitions this year - J.J.Barea
2011 Free Agent class wasn't nearly as talented as the FA class of 2010, but it had some talented players at the start of their careers and some respectable veterans, who could strengthen all 30 NBA teams rosters. So let's take a brief look at the biggest Free Agents this summer and where they went to.
NBA champions, Dallas Mavericks, strengthened their bench with Leon Powe and veteran Grant Hill. Leon Powe, who averaged 3 points and 3,3 boards per game last season for the Memhpis Grizzlies, will be the back-up of Dirk Nowitzki, but Grant Hill, who played all 82 games last season and averaged 15 points and nearly 5 rebounds, is expected to be the leader of Dallas' bench alongside Jason "The Jet" Terry. Unfortunately for Dallas, they didn't just acquire players this summer, but hey also lost one important piece from their championship winning team in J.J. Barea, who went to LA Lakers to take the starting point guard job there. Barea, who played only 37 games last season due to injury, will have his first starting job in his career.
Last year's NBA finalists, Miami Heat, added much needed talent at the center position. They signed Mehmet Okur, who started only 4 games last season and mostly came into the game from the bench, averaging 9 points and 5 rebounds, will take the starting center spot for the Heat. Okur wasn't Heat's first option to sign, it was Samuel Dalembert, who decided to join the veteran team Boston Celtics and start at the center position there. Dalembert, who didn't start any games last season for the Sacramento Kings, is one of two big signings for the C's alongside Shane Battier, who will add depth at the small forward position and bring tough defense to Boston.
Other Eastern Conference favorite Chicago Bulls finally got a shooting guard, who could start alongside Derrick Rose, in J.R. Smith. Tayshaun Prince joined Deron Williams and Brook Lopez in New Jersey, while Al Thornton went to Cleveland to help rookie Wyatt Moller raise the Cavaliers to the heights they were during the LeBron James' days. But Jamal Crawford returned to New York to help Melo, Amare and the Knicks reach the NBA finals.
Here is the list of mention worthy free agents and their destinations this summer:

Magic and Grizzlies makes a trade
Orlando Magic will be Kurt Thomas' 10th team in his NBA career
Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to a trade that will send Kurt Thomas and Sam Young to Orlando and Daniel Orton, Earl Clark and Chris Duhon the other way. After the trade officially happened, Orlando Magic also signed guard Jeremy Lin to a one year contract.
Magic's reasoning to do this trade was pretty simple - they needed someone that could play defense outside of Howard and William, and a player that could give Dwight some minutes of rest in games, which they hasn't had since they traded Gortat to Phoenix. Now with Young and Thomas they have both - a good backup center and a guard/forward that you can put on James, Wade or Rose on defense. With the signing of Lin, they also didn't loose any depth at the point guard position, although Lin won't see much minutes unless Arenas or Nelson suffers an injury.
Grade for Magic: A
Grizzlies added some young talent to their team through this trade, which won't help win games right now, but could do it in the near future. When Grizzlies drafted Steve Rivera, it was clear that Sam Young will fell out of rotation with Gay, Rivera, Mayo and Allen eating up all the minutes at the shooting guard/small forward position. Kurt Thomas also wouldn't see much minutes, because of acquiring DeAndre Jordan, who will take the back-up centre spot. And that's why Grizzlies got young and talented Clark and Orton from this trade - they are still developing and they don't need much playing time yet. They also got Duhon, who will be a good 3rd point guard for the Grizz.
Grade for Grizzlies: B+

Dwight's rebounds are a little low, but still a nice offensive start for him.
