Spoelstra Refuses Comment On Lineup Change
May 6th, 2012
Miami Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra is refusing to answer questions with regards to his lineup change
in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, when he started the injured Jimmer Fredette at the point
guard spot over Rookie of the Year Liam Washburn, who was the starter throughout the regular season and
playoffs thus far.
"No comment" Spoelstra said "Next question"
He would only say that it will remain so for this series until he decides a change needs to be made.
Washburn only played 7 minutes in game 1, and was the third point guard off the bench. He has claimed
that he is physically free of any injuries and does not know why Spoelstra is benching him.
"Hell, don't ask me" Washburn said "Ask him, he's the one who's coaching"
Fredette, meanwhile, had just 5 points and 2 assists on 2 for 13 shooting. The Heat lost Game 1 79-104.
Game 2 is tomorrow evening at 7:00pm at the United Center, Chicago IL.

Noah, Bulls hold off Heat Rally to take 2-0 Series Lead
Noah dominated the Heat on the offensive glass
Chicago, IL - Defense Wins Championships, or at least, playoff games.
It's cliche, but it's also true as witnessed on Monday night in Game 2 of the Bulls-Heat Eastern Conference Semifinals Series.
Chicago's defensive anchor Joakim Noah racked up 20 points, 15 rebounds (7 offensive), and 5 blocks as the Bulls held off a late Heat rally to take home the 100-93 Game 2 victory, and will head off to South Beach holding a 2-0 series lead.
Derrick Rose continued his spectacular play as he finished with 30 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists on 11 for 22 shooting from the field in 36 minutes of play.
Luol Deng added 16 and 5 of his own, while Carlos Boozer had 12 points and 7 rebounds.
The Heat were once agian led by Dwyane Wade, who notched a game high 36 points to go along with 6 assists. He shot a very efficient 17 for 29 from the field but had just 3 free throws.
Michael Beasley finished with a double double at 10 points and 11 rebounds, but Defensive Player of the Year Josh Smith was bothered by foul troubles and played just 22 minutes. He would finish with a mere 4 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals.
The Bulls once again dominated from the start, but Miami picked up their defense after allowing 31 first quarter points. The Heat bench also played a huge role in Miami's comeback attempt, led by Dorrell Wright, who had 10 points, and Mike Conley (7 points, 7 assists). The Miami bench outscored Chicago's reserves 28 to 15.
The Bulls lone contributions from the second unit came once again from the 40 year old Shaquille O'Neal, who had another solid game as he finished with 8 points and 6 rebounds in 14 minutes.
Once again, Rookie of the Year Liam Washburn of the Miami Heat was left on the bench as Jimmer Fredette started again for the Heat. Fredette would have a much better game than his Game 1 performance as he finished with 8 points and 4 assists.
However, the Heat went 0 for 10 from three point territory in this game, and one must wonder why Spoelstra did not start, or even play Washburn, who is a solid shooter and definitely more so than the injured Fredette, for more than just 7 minutes. Washburn was 2 for 3 from the field and notched 4 points and 1 assist.
Nonetheless, Spoelstra has maintained his stance at playing Washburn as the team's third string point guard behind Fredette and Conley, and now he must live with the results.
The series will now shift to Miami for Games 3 and 4, as the Bulls will look finish the job.

Rose's Heroics Lifts Bulls to Triple Overtime Victory
Derrick Rose hits the game winning jump shot as time expires
Miami, FL - Dwyane Wade stood motionless, transfixed and staring blankly at the basket.
You can hardly blame him.
After knocking down a clutch shot over Derrick Rose in regulation to send the game into the extra period, Wade and the Heat could only watch as the Bulls forced another, and yet another overtime despite their attempts to pull ahead with the win.
First it was the improbable three point shot from Kyle Korver at the end of the first overtime, shooting over both Wade and Fredette and somehow wills the ball in.
Then, it was a clutch three from Derrick Rose near the end of the second overtime.
Finally, Rose took it a step further, as he shakes free from the defense of Dwyane Wade, and calmly knocks down the game winning jump shot as the buzzer sounds at the end of the third OT.
"Unbelieveable." Wade said "I am at a loss for words now."
Wade, who played nearly the entire game save 5 minutes, finished just one assist shy of a triple double as he racked up 39 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists, he was 15 for 25 from the field and 8 for 9 from the charity stripe.
Despite his efforts, however, Miami is unable to come up with the critical Game 3 victory as the Bulls snatch away the 121-120 triple overtime victory here at American Airlines Arena, and take a commanding 3-0 series lead in these Eastern Conference Semifinals.
No team in NBA history that trailed 3-0 has ever won a seven-game series.
"Doesn't mean it's impossible" Erik Spoelstra said, "Why can't we be the first one to do it?"
The Bulls concur.
"We are not going to look at it like we have a 3-0 lead, but rather we are down 0-3." said Byron Scott "We have to approach every game like it's a game 7 if we want to advance"
They might be able to relax for a day after this hard-fought victory though.
Derrick Rose had one of his best playoff performances in his career thus far, finishing with a career playoff high 46 points along with 6 rebounds and 9 assists. His 21 field goals made included the three that sent the game to triple overtime, and eventually the game winning shot at the buzzer.
All-Star center Joakim Noah followed his strong play from Game 2, as he finished with another huge double double of 20 points and 17 rebounds, along with 3 steals and 4 blocks. His rebounds, steals and blocks were all game-highs.
Luol Deng added in 17 points and 7 rebounds and Shaquille O'Neal continues his solid play from off the bench with a double double effort of 11 points and 10 boards to compensate for Carlos Boozer's struggles tonight.
Boozer had just 8 points and 2 rebounds, and was benched by Scott in favor of O'Neal for most of the fourth quarter and in all of the overtimes.
Kyle Korver would shake off his slump and put up 10 points on 4 for 7 shooting, none bigger than the three pointer over Wade and Fredette that sent the game to double overtime.
For the Heat, Wade finally receieved some help, although it appears to be still not enough.
Michael Beasley had 24 points and 10 rebound, while Jimmer Fredette finally contributed a little bit more, finishing with 19 points and 3 assists but shot just 8 for 23 from the field.
Mike Conley continued his strong play from the bench as he racked up 16 points in 15 minutes played. Josh Smith's slump, however, continues still as he was held to a mere 4 points, but did have 10 rebounds and 6 assists in the losing effort.
Starting center Dan Hicks played a career playoff high 44 minutes, and notched a career playoff best 15 rebounds alongside 2 points and 2 assists.
Liam Washburn, however, still remains stuck on the bench by Spoelstra. Washburn played just 6 minutes despite the three extra periods played and ended the game with 5 points on 2 for 4 shooting.
For the Heat, their backs are now against a wall as it's "Win or Go Home Time in Game 4. After all the things he's done in the offseason to get to this point, you can be sure that Dwyane Wade will not be satisfied with that outcome.
Game 4 will be back here at American Airlines Arena on Friday Night.
