Kobe ends what Gasol starts; Lakers take huge 3-1 lead over a furious Popovich, Spurs
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (SAS :: LAL)

LOS ANGELES, May 25 -- Pau Gasol took care of the first half and Kobe Bryant handled the second. Gasol and Bryant split the offensive load for the Los Angeles Lakers, carrying the team to a 101-84 win over the punchless San Antonio Spurs and a 3-1 lead in their Western Conference Finals series. “I guess the story is one half for each of them,” said Lakers coach Phil Jackson. “An extraordinary effort from both of them. We needed it more from Pau, he finally came to fruition in this series.” The Lakers are within one win of their fourth trip to the NBA Finals in as many years: they can wrap up the series with a victory at San Antonio in two days. Gasol scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half; despite his statline, the Lakers only held a five-point lead before intermission. Part of that had to do with Bryant, who made 5-of-13 shots, but “The Black Mamba” came alive in the second half, shooting 6-of-12. He had ten in the third quarter only, as Los Angeles took control for good: 72-64 into the final frame.

“Our goals are much higher than just winning this series,” said Bryant. “We have to stay prepared. We have to come and try and bury them on their own home court.” But Gasol made sure the Spurs got no closer than seven points in the last quarter, limiting Tim Duncan to only two points -- eight in the entire game. “I had to come out and be more aggressive,” added Gasol. “By me being able to go out and be aggressive in the early minutes, that allowed things to open up for Kobe later.” The Spaniard made 6-of-10 shots and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe, to go with 15 rebounds, two steals and two blocks. During a 6-minute stretch, the Lakers had a 12-2 run, with a 3-pointer by Ron Artest and an up-and-under by Andrew Bynum, that gave them a 90-72 lead. Bynum posted 14 points, collecting seven rebounds and a rejection, while Shannon Brown shot a poor 3-of-7 but had his way for five boards and six assists. “When my offense is struggling, I try and do the little things to help my ballclub win,” said Brown, who has been a headache for San Antonio in all four games so far, posting a game-high plus-minus of +21 tonight.

Looking at the stats, San Antonio was dominated from start to finish: outrebounded, in fastbreak points, points in the paint, reserve points, team fouls, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers. “We had no effort at all,” said Manu Ginobili, who led the Spurs with 17 points. “We didn't match their effort at all. We got murdered on almost every statistic. We couldn't guard the perimeter and got beat on dribble penetration the entire game.” Corey Maggette and Tony Parker added 13 points each for the losing team, which shot 35 percent (31-of-87) and attempted 14 shots from 3-point land, making only two. But a fuming Gregg Popovich went even further, criticizing the game officials; he was fined $20,000 by the league. “I guess I'll let the refs do the interview for me. They were just as important,” an angry Popovich shouted as he walked back from the postgame news conference, over some calls he felt went against his squad. The Spurs were whistled for 18 personal fouls that led to 31 free throws by the Lakers, including 10 calls and five in a row in the fourth quarter. “It's tough to get quality looks. When we get quality looks, we haven't been able to make them, or, the referees didn't feel the same way as us,” said a frustrated DeJuan Blair, who was held to four points, joining Popovich's claims.

I'm playing on Superstar... this loss was huge. Finally, Gasol was on the court and Brown didn't score but had boards and assists. I guess it's a nice challenge for me to bounce back from this 3-1 hole. :)

M&M (Manu & Maggs) pull off stunning victory; Spurs crash Lakers party, now trail 2-3
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (LAL :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, May 27 -- Manu Ginobili's full form appeared just in time to postpone a party planned by the Los Angeles Lakers. Manu scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half as the San Antonio Spurs somehow stayed alive in the Western Conference Finals, with a 101-90 Game 5 victory over the stunned Lakers. “I don't know, it's something about playing the Lakers,” joked Ginobili, who was on attack mode tonight, getting nine shots from the free throw line and banking all of them, for a game-best plus-minus of +18. But the true key was coach Gregg Popovich's defense, using an array of zones and switching man-to-man plays that smothered Kobe Bryant, making him go inside to score, and also put the most pressure on his teammates to make shots; they didn't. “We couldn't seem to stop them man-to-man, so we went to zone and we had more effectiveness,” said Popovich. “In the fourth quarter, we stayed with it instead of going back to man-to-man and there you have it.” Corey Maggette scored 17 points and Tim Duncan had 14, 11 rebounds and three blocks for the Spurs, who held a 46-40 edge on the boards and outscored Los Angeles 64-42 in the paint.

Despite the big defense on him, the Spurs withstood some magic from Bryant, who tied the game at 71 with a jumper to close the third quarter, bouncing back from a 14-point halftime deficit. Bryant led the Lakers with a match-high 26 points. Unfazed, the Spurs opened the fourth frame with jumpers by Maggette and rookie James Anderson before Ginobili added a three-point play for a 78-71 lead. DeJuan Blair then sank two shots from the charity stripe and Maggette made a 3-pointer, before Los Angeles finally scored after four scoreless minutes, taking advantage on a 3 from Ron Artest; the Lakers were now trailing by nine points and could never cut the deficit to less than six after that. “We came out really flat and we can't do that against a team like San Antonio,” said Lakers coach Phil Jackson. “They have too many shooters and they were much more aggressive than we were.” Artest and Derek Fisher shot a combined 6-of-21 from the field. “He did a lot of grabbing and scratching to irritate me,” said Artest of Maggette. “He did a good job of fighting me. You can't do anything but give him credit for what he did.”

Fisher added: “It was a very physical game, probably typical of a playoff match. We couldn't stay composed and they got the good opportunity baskets.” Blair finished the game with 14 points while Drew Gooden added 12 as a reserve for San Antonio. With 7:11 left in the third quarter, Lakers forward Lamar Odom was involved in an altercation that saw Spurs center Matt Bonner ejected and Shannon Brown and Anderson get into a heated argument: Bonner was called for a shooting foul and took an elbow shove from Odom. He went after the Lakers sixth man, but instead tangled with bigman Pau Gasol, before Brown and Anderson started jawing at each other. “I tried to step in and get in the way. I could see him coming after Lamar. He stepped in and took a shot as I was getting in the way,” said Gasol. Odom and Gasol scored 15 points each for the Lakers, who shot 40 percent (35-of-87) and made 5-of-18 3-pointers. Kobe & Co. can close the series 4-2 with a win on their homecourt.
