Kobe nets 30; Odom, Brown help off the bench as Lakers top Spurs, tie series
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (LAL :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, May 20 -- Lamar Odom didn't like the way the Los Angeles Lakers played. He was just glad to get the win. Odom scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as a reserve to help the Lakers beat the San Antonio Spurs, 101-95, in a grinding, physical game, to tie the Western Conference Finals series at one contest apiece. “A win is a win,” said Odom, “But almost everything that went on tonight was kind of terrible.” In the struggle (kind of an absence) of Pau Gasol, Odom sparked a sluggish Lakers attack in the second half to prevent San Antonio a 2-0 lead. “Phil (Jackson) was mad because he didn't think I was having an impact,” Gasol commented. “ At one point I thought I was hurting the team.” Odom had his double-double in only 22 minutes, shooting 6/7 from the field, while the Spaniard shot 5-of-13 for 10 points and nine rebounds. Kobe Bryant scored a game-high 30 points for Los Angeles, but he needed 36 shots.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was pleased that the team made Bryant work for his scoring. “He was the leading scorer, but he had to take 36 shots to do it,” said Popovich. “The team worked hard, but we couldn't get this win.” Manu Ginobili was finally able to get off his slump, with 21 points and eight rebounds to lead San Antonio, while Tiago Splitter scored 12 points and Tony Parker and Larry Hughes added 11 apiece. In search for more size, Popovich started Splitter in the PF spot, switching DeJuan Blair to the bench, but it didn't work out for the Spurs: Los Angeles had 16 second-chance points. That's perhaps the most remarkable statistic in the game: the fact that the Lakers attempted more than 100 field goals to get the win tonight. They even were outrebounded and had more team fouls, but the 10 offensive boards were the key. Bryant also said he was happy the team was more agressive; after having only 8 free throws last game, they had 21 tonight.

After a pull-up jumper by Parker gave the Spurs an 46-40 lead with 1:34 to go in the first half, Odom made a 3-pointer to kickstart a 8-2 run; the scored was tied, 48-48, at halftime. Bryant then dunked to trigger a new 12-2 run in the third quarter, for a 71-61 lead. San Antonio stayed close, but never led again. Ginobili penetrated the lane in transition and hit a twisting, reverse layup to cut the deficit to only four points, but after a timeout, Ron Artest -- bouncing back from his terrible performance in Game 1 -- hit a 3-pointer from the corner and Shannon Brown a layup to push the Lakers' advantage to nine points. “When we got back in it, we did a nice job,” said Tim Duncan, who struggled for 10 points and was presented the Defensive Player of the Year award prior to the game. “But down the stretch they were the better team.” Brown then added another 3, to give L.A. a healthy 12-point lead. “We'll take a win any way we can get it,” said Brown (game-best +14), who posted an all-around game with 12 points, five rebounds and five assists. “The Spurs are a great team and we needed this victory to go to Staples with the series tied.”

Well, it will get tougher now with the series shifting to LA. Even with Gasol playing like this, you got the win. Odom was too much.

Later -- Coach of the Year...

River Walk Chronicles ♦ Spurs Beat (Awards...)

Gregg Popovich named Coach of the Year
    nba.com/spurs/beat | May 22nd, 2011

NEW YORK -- San Antonio's Gregg Popovich is the recipient of the Red Auerbach Trophy as the 2010-11 NBA Coach of the Year, the NBA announced today. Popovich, the first and only coach in Spurs history to receive the honor, led the franchise to yet another Southwest Division title and a league-best 63-win season this year. He guided the team to a 63-19 (.768) record, an 13-game improvement over last season at 50-32 (.610), while finishing at another league-best 30-11 (.732) on the road. The Spurs were 21-20 away from home last year. At the All-Star break, the Spurs owned the highest winning percentage in the West at 40-16 and went on to win 23 of the season's last 26 games. Popovich and San Antonio did not lose more than two games in a row this season, marking the fourth time in franchise history that the squad finished with 60 or more wins (1994-95 and 2002-03, 60 victories; 2005-06 and 2010-11, 63).

The team had winning streaks of 6, 8, 10 and 11 games. The Spurs were 9-7 versus division rivals (Dallas, Houston, Memphis and New Orleans) a year ago; this year, Popovich coached the Spurs to an 12-4 record against those teams. Named the Spurs head coach on Dec. 10, 1996, Popovich has collected a regular season-record of 799-381 (.677) in 13 seasons at the helm and is the Spurs’ all-time leader in coaching victories. The Coach of the Year Award is named after legendary coach and Hall of Famer Red Auerbach who guided the Celtics to nine NBA Championships. In 1996, Auerbach was honored as one of the Top 10 Coaches in NBA History as the NBA celebrated its 50th anniversary. A panel of 125 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada voted for Popovich, who edged out the five other candidates to win the trophy this year:

Yeah, it was a defensive game. Now with the series shifting to LA, will be even harder.

Shannon Brown is the team's 7th man, 12-5-5 is a very nice statline for a reserve. Odom, well, just what the team needed to make up for Gasol's struggles.

osaki wrote:Tough loss, now you have to take one at Staples. Good Luck

Thanks man, will need it.

Yep, it has been the way for them lately. Their offensive boards killed me.

Yes it was. But I'm glad I made Kobe work for his scoring, despite the loss. Odom was too much.

Last time I checked he was 10% in morale. :? I guess he now feels better with this win.

If Odom keeps playing like this, they have a chance.

Again, I had a tough week, just had some homework done for school and now I have that famous "teams from 1931-2002" test on Wednesday, and Crysis 2 is taking all my freetime, so Game 3 will come Wed night or early Thursday...
