Joystick problem

I configured my 2 axis, 4 buttons joystick to work with NBA 2003.
After about a minute of playing button 1 (shoot) & 2 (pass) switches, button 3 (jump) does something else. I have to pause the game, open controller window (wich looks as I left it) configure button 2 again, save it & continue playing.
Does anyone can help me?
