Part Four: Race to the MVP
After a long absence, Kobe Bryant is finally back on the top spot in The Race
1. Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers (48-11)
Stats: PPG -- 31.4; RPG -- 4.5; APG -- 4.8; SPG -- 2.1; BPG -- 0.5; FG% -- .543; 3P% -- .476; FT% -- .868
Last Month's Rank: 2
Comment: Bryant finally moved past Chris Paul for the number one spot here on the Race, mainly due to his steady and dominant performances night in, night out. An article was made recently on Kobe's ex-teammate Shaquille O'Neal on joining the 30,000 point club, but it took Shaq 20 seasons to do so. Bryant reached the milestone earlier on in the season, his 16th.
2. Chris Paul, New Orleans Hornets (50-10)
Stats: PPG -- 21.5; RPG -- 4.7; APG -- 10.4; SPG -- 2.6; BPG -- 0.2; FG% -- .553; 3P% -- .437; FT% -- .899
Last Month's Rank: 1
Comment: CP3 finally gets knocked off from the top spot thanks to a February in which the Hornets lost 4 games, leading to their loss total into double digits. Unless they go 22-0 (which they did at the start of the season), they will not be matching the 72-10 record set by the Jordan-led Chicago Bulls.
3. Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls (40-19)
Stats: PPG -- 26.0; RPG -- 3.0; APG -- 8.0; SPG -- 1.8; BPG -- 0.7; FG% -- .529; 3P% -- .367; FT% -- .827
Last Month's Rank: 4
Comment: The only player in the NBA averaging at least 26 points and 8 assists. After back to back losses to New Jersey and then on their Texas trip to the Mav and Spurs, Rose has stepped up his play and carried the Bulls to a nice five game winning streak to close out the month of February. In that stretch he has averages of 32 points, 8.2 assists, 2.4 blocks and 2.4 steals. Talk about getting it done.
4. Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat (39-21)
Stats: PPG -- 26.4; RPG -- 3.6; APG -- 6.7; SPG -- 2.3; BPG -- 1.7; FG% -- .511; 3P% -- .336; FT% -- .777
Last Month's Rank: 7
Comment: After a rough start to the season, Dwayne Wade and the Miami Heat have turned it on in the month of February, going 12-1 for the month despite losing their starting center Jermaine O'Neal to a season ending injury (Torn ACL). Wade deserves all the credit he's getting because he's simply being spectular on both ends of the floor.
5. Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic (45-13)
Stats: PPG -- 19.1; RPG -- 11.1; APG -- 0.9; SPG -- 0.6; BPG -- 2.9; FG% -- .551; 3P% -- .500; FT% -- .559
Last Month's Rank: 3
Comment: At 11.1 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game, Howard is now in danger of losing both rebounding and block titles for the first time in years, especially rebounding as Chicago's Joakim Noah has grabbed 1.3 more rebounds per game thus far. Howard has increased his scoring output and we'll see if that makes the difference in the playoffs for the Orlando Magic.
6. Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas Mavericks (39-18)
Stats: PPG -- 27.2; RPG -- 9.2; APG -- 1.4; SPG -- 1.3; BPG -- 1.3; FG% -- .503; 3P% -- .457; FT% -- .870
Last Month's Rank: 5
Comment: Dirk has yet again managed to bump up his scoring average this month by more than half a point per game as he and the Mavs are just playing great basketball. They probably won't be able to catch Yao and the Rockets for second place in the Southwest division (behind by 4 games), but look for them to hold onto their 5th seed easily (ahead by 7.5 games to the Spurs) and make a good push come playoff time.
7. Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics (34-24)
Stats: PPG -- 17.5; RPG -- 7.9; APG -- 9.0; SPG -- 2.3; BPG -- 0.3; FG% -- .512; 3P% -- .188; FT% -- .596
Last Month's Rank: 8
Comment: Another month, another triple double for Rajon Rondo and a bunch of other games that were almost so. Rondo's league leading number of triple doubles is now 7, Lamar Odom of the Lakers and LeBron James of the Kings are next in line with 5 apiece. Rondo has also upped his scoring average by more than 7 points this season. He is averaging career highs across the board (except for three point percentage) and is easily the best player on a Celtics team stacked with future hall of famers.
8. LeBron James, Sacramento Kings (31-28)
Stats: PPG -- 25.2; RPG -- 10.1; APG -- 6.7; SPG -- 1.9; BPG -- 2.3; FG% -- .465; 3P% -- .291; FT% -- .742
Last Month's Rank: N/A
Comment: As mentioned above, LeBron has now 5 triple doubles for the season. He has stepped up since Manu got hurt and finished the month of February with back to back triple doubles, one of which came in a win against Kobe and the Lakers.
9. Amare Stoudemire, Phoenix Suns (28-30)
Stats: PPG -- 26.7; RPG -- 10.2; APG -- 1.2; SPG -- 0.6; BPG -- 1.8; FG% -- .548; 3P% -- .000; FT% -- .792
Last Month's Rank: N/A
Comment: Despite all the rumors, the February trade deadline came by and passed without the Suns trading away their All-Star big man. Obviously the Suns management are banking on the 29 year old power forward to deliver, and in the final stretch of the season Stoudemire will need to give all that he can get.
10. Pau Gasol, Los Angeles Lakers (48-11)
Stats: PPG -- 22.0; RPG -- 9.7; APG -- 2.4; SPG -- 0.3; BPG -- 2.3; FG% -- .561; 3P% -- .500; FT% -- .713
Last Month's Rank: 9
Comment: While the case can be made for Dirk Nowitzki, we here at the Race believes that Pau Gasol is the most skilled all-round big man in basketball today. In the month of February he has increased his stats across the board and is the perfect compliment to Kobe Bryant in Phil Jackson's triangle offense.

Probably not, as they have 22 games left.
Anyway, I hope Rose gets it.
