River Walk Chronicles ♦ Spurs Beat

    Ginobili: “We're all on the same page.”
    nba.com/spurs/beat | March 8th, 2011

    SAN ANTONIO -- Finally, they got it; the embarrassment got to be too much. Finally... there was concerted effort. Deciding after a loss at Memphis a week ago that they were fed up with themselves, San Antonio put together three marvellous contests mixed with offense, defense and intensity, leaving all to wonder why they can't do it night in, night out. After a 36-point win at Cleveland, and resounding victories over the Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Lakers, the only two teams with better records, the only thing the Spurs wanted to do was bask in the glow of finally getting things together. “I think the message was loud and clear after we loss that game against the Grizzlies. We had given up 38 points in the last quarter, if I remember correctly, and it seemed like we were just going through the motions,” said Corey Maggette. “In the team flight back to San Antonio, Pop came in here and he emphasized how we wanted us to play this games. The guys who weren't going to do it weren't going to be out there in the court.”

    Funnily enough, that's what they did. After an offensively challenged Grizzlies team hung 68 points on the Spurs on that second half, Cleveland got only 37 in the first half in the next game. The Spurs held the Cavs to 3-for-19 field goals in the first quarter for only 11 points; Cleveland missed 12 shot attempts in a row, and it looked as if the Spurs actually knew what they were doing defensively after the disaster at Tennessee. They turned Cleveland's best player this season, Anderson Varejao, into just another player, frustrating him with a switching defence and holding him to 2-for-7 shooting from the floor, for a season-low 5 points and a plus-minus of -35. Coach Gregg Popovich went to Tim Duncan on Varejao for long stretches of the night. “We started switching a little bit on defense. Tim's on a bigger, stronger guy than against the Grizzlies,” said Popovich. “We felt that was the best matchup and he did an excellent job.”

    Two days later, strategy aside, a huge victory over Miami came from a determined and sustained effort. Manu Ginobili continued his offensive assault with another great performance: 24 points, three assists, a huge steal on Dwyane Wade in the fourth period, shooting 7-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-6 shots from 3-point territory and a perfect 5-for-5 at the charity stripe. “You have to will yourself to do it. I think if we want to be a good defensive team we're going to have to put in that kind of effort every night,” Manu said. “That's what it's about. If we play with this energy, we're going to win a lot more games.” Wade and LeBron James carried the Heat's offense through the contest, but the key for San Antonio's win was Duncan's work on Chris Bosh. The former Raptor, who entered the game averaging 23 points and 9 rebounds per game, was limited to 14 and 7, and the Spurs, invigorated by Larry Hughes' 21 points off the bench, used a 15-3 run to close the game.

    As the Spurs were posting a thrilling, back-and-forth game against the Lakers two days after, you could hear the fans at the AT&T Center screaming for their team. Those days of fans at the Spurs' arena booing are now in the past. Trailing by as many as 8 in the first half, they got some a much-needed boost from Tony Parker -- after the Frenchman was injured for three games, he returned against Miami for 16 points, eight rebounds and six steals, and chained a great performance with another: 15 points and six assists. “I think the first half, we didn't know what we were doing,” Parker said. “Manu even said to me, 'Don't get fooled, we're not playing well.'” Duncan was active on the glass -- 16 boards and smothering defense over Pau Gasol, who only scored 12 points. That seemed to energize the Spurs and demoralize the Lakers, who struggled down the stretch. Ginobili added: “It was of huge importance for us to get all on the same page and right now we are. Our rotations worked to perfection, and we got both Miami and the Lakers taking the jump shots we wanted them to take. An exceptional week for us.”

I held both Kobe and Gasol, that was huge. Artest surprised me, he almost got a triple-double.

Comments on the article? Finally understood how to play at 100% with this team. Tomorrow -- Pistons @ Spurs.

Maggette's all-around play, Ginobili's scoring propel Spurs over Pistons
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (DET :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, March 9 -- The plan for the Detroit Pistons was to play small. When San Antonio's Corey Maggette stepped up big, they had no answer. The Pistons couldn't overcome a seven-minute drought to open the game, and began their comeback too late as the Spurs won the contest 92-83. Maggette scored 17 points and added a season-high 11 rebounds; 14 of those 17 points came in the first half. “I was just taking what the defense gave me,” Maggette said. “I just started feeling it. They gave me space so I could drive to the hoop, and got a lot of free throws.” Even though the Pistons were coming off an impressive 98-95 win at Milwaukee some days ago -- and three losses afterwards, but the Pistons were playing acceptable basketball -- the coach Hugh Wilks tweaked his lineup to play small in long periods of the game. The change didn't provide the early spark Wilks wanted, as the Pistons were 0-for-10 from the field to start the game before a jumper by Richard Hamilton with 5:04 left. After the jumper, they shot 5-of-8 to close the period. “Obviously, we made some bad decisions that got us in a rut,” said Wilks, who took over fired coach John Kuester. “It's more our fault than anything. We weren't as aggressive as I wanted us to be.”

Much of Maggette's early scoring input came at the expense of Tayshaun Prince, who often was a step behind. “There was nothing I could really do, except try to make him miss and that didn't work out,” said Prince, who was held to 6-of-16 shooting for 12 points. Will Bynum scored a game-high 19 points and nine assists for Detroit, who also enjoyed 17 points from Hamilton. The Spurs took a 20-point lead in the beginning of the second quarter and stretched the advantage to 38-14, but Detroit cut the lead to 54-43 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Pistons had a 15-6 run with 4:30 left to cut the deficit to only six points, 67-61. A key was Wilks assigning swingman Austin Daye to defend Maggette; Daye held Maggette to only three points in the second half. “I feel like a prophet,” said Bynum, who has been praising Daye for weeks. “I've always said that if Austin gets more minutes, he is going to be very good. We go against each other in practice and I know what type of player he is.” Both teams shot below 40 percent, as free throws were the catalyst. The Spurs also outrebounded Detroit, 58-46, grabbing 16 offensive rebounds against the Pistons' only 6, and won the battle in the paint 56-34.

The Spurs had a 14-4 run in the fourth quarter for a 85-73 advantage; in that run, Manu Ginobili scored eight of his 15 points. Maggette was the standout, but the first words from the Spurs coach Gregg Popovich were: “Thank God for Manu. He gives it everything he's got every night he steps on the floor. He takes his job very seriously and the results are right there, his teammates love playing with him.” DeJuan Blair and Larry Hughes scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds apiece for San Antonio. Maggette, and also Tim Duncan -- with 13 points, 12 boards and three blocks -- were largely responsible for building San Antonio's lead, but Ginobili's fourth-quarter explosion helped turn back Detroit's comeback. “We fought back despite being down by 24. We showed we are not going to quit,” said Carl Landry, who shot 0-of-8 and was scoreless. At one point in the second half, Popovich played three small guards together: Tony Parker, George Hill and Gary Neal, to counter the Pistons' trio of Bynum, J.J. Barea and Ben Gordon, all these six players with a 6'4'' height or shorter. “Our defense pretty much caved,” Gordon said. “We gave them a lot of easy opportunities at the basket, a lot of free throws. The fourth quarter is when you want to hold a team down, not put them at the free-throw line or take open shots.”

Dodson, Williams lead Kentucky past Will Sit, Blue Devils with first-quarter excellence
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (Kentucky :: Duke)

DUKE, March 10 -- Darnell Dodson and the Kentucky Wildcats were determined to avoid losing back-to-back games for the first time this season. Dodson scored a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds to lead the Wildcats to a 68-58 victory over the Duke Blue Devils. Jeff Williams scored eight of his 10 points during a decisive 8-0 run in the fourth quarter for the Wildcats, bouncing back from last night's 82-74 loss to Purdue. Kentucky held a 22-7 lead after the first frame but the Blue Devils raced and cut the deficit to 60-58 in the fourth, before the Wildcats embarked on an 8-0 burst to end the game. “We tried to get Jeff on the floor a lot more with Darnell,” Wildcats coach John Calipari said. “He got a lot of guys involved and overall did a great job for us.” Williams added nine rebounds, five assists and four steals to his statline.

“After the second half started, we locked down and were a lot better defensively,” said Perry Stevenson, who scored 14 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. “We didn't lose our temper, we took the game by the throat and controlled it.” The brothers, Miles Plumlee and Mason Plumlee, scored 9 and 8 points, respectively. Mason added 14 rebounds and three assists, while Lance Thomas added eight points for the Blue Devils, who had their first loss after a three-game winning streak. Will Sit shot 3-of-7 for 6 points, to go with one rebound and four assists. Sit was in pole position to get double-digits in assists, but his teammates couldn't sink the shots. “I just wanted to be aggressive,” Sit said. “Coach allowed me to move and cut and make plays, not only for me but for my teammates.” Williams was happy his team was able to pull out the win at the always difficult Cameron Indoor Stadium. “This is a tough place to play. I think we did a good job of keeping our composure and not get caught up in the college-like atmosphere,” he said. “We got good minutes out of Darnell and Perry to pull it out.”

Spurs top Tyreke, Kings thanks to Parker's impact, Duncan's marvellous retro performance
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (SAC :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, March 11 -- Like a fine wine, as Tim Duncan ages, it just gets better for the San Antonio Spurs. One of his best games of his career helped his team bolster their first seed hopes, as Timmy scored 19 points and almost achieved a quadruple-double with the Spurs posting a 98-95 win over the Sacramento Kings. Duncan also finished with 12 rebounds, nine assists and six blocks. Tony Parker added 21 points, including 14 in the second half, in also one of his best games. “Tim had an awesome game, one for the books in all areas,” Parker said. Sacramento led 25-23 after the first quarter, but Duncan dunked to cap a 11-2 spurt to open the second quarter. Manu Ginobili made two shots from the free throw line and Parker scored a fastbreak layup that extended the lead to 42-35 with only three minutes left in the first half, but two consecutive jumpers by Tyreke Evans tied the game at 49 right before intermission. A key to the first half was San Antonio's dominant play in the paint, which resulted in 28 points in the inside and 11 free throws. The Spurs made 10, with Parker, Ginobili and Larry Hughes draining two each.

“We all played with intensity, and I think a big key was that we helped each other on offense and on defense,” said Ginobili, who notched in 17 points and four rebounds. “We were in command of the whole first half, I'd say, which allowed us to play more loosely. But Tyreke was on fire and tied the game. The second half was another story.” Duncan just missed on the fifth quadruple-double in NBA history and the first in 17 years -- the last player to accomplish the feat was his Twin Towers partner, current assistant general manager of the Spurs, David Robinson on 1994. “I wasn't focused on that. It would have been news to me,” Duncan said. Sacramento grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and held a commanding 47-37 edge on the glass, as DeMarcus Cousins grabbed 12 and Jason Thompson added 8, but the Spurs' accuracy from beyond the arc was too much to overcome. The boards disparity certainly did not please the Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. “They dominated the rebounds. I'm surprised how tired we looked in the second half. Cousins and Thompson were too tough,” said Popovich, “But thankfully, we were able to make our 3-pointers and Tim was unstoppable. I'm sure that he had no clue what his stats were. He is that good.”

Cousins added 18 points to those 12 rebounds off the bench, and Tyreke Evans scored a game-best 32 points and five boards. “We were aggressive and got into them,” said Cousins, “But we couldn't make our treys and Tim was just a monster for them.” The Spurs held a 25-13 edge in assists, boosted by the nine dimes by Duncan and eight by Parker. Duncan's explosion offset a poor performance by Corey Maggette, who only had six points. Spurs forward DeJuan Blair contributed another solid game with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Rodney Stuckey managed 23 points and six boards for the Kings. “I expected us to come out with a lot of energy and compete and try to win, but it just didn't happen for us,” the former Detroit Piston said. The Kings remained with the eleventh spot in the West standings, tied with Portland and only 1 game ahead of Phoenix; the New Orleans Hornets are 3 games away for the 10th spot. The Spurs did move only a ½ game ahead of the LA Lakers, which lost to the Miami Heat last night. San Antonio has won seven of eight and now start a three-game road trip, with stops at Houston, Miami and Dallas.

Ah, Duncan was so close to that quadruple-double. Surprised the Kings put up that much of a fight!

Duncan was solid, it it shouldn't be that hard against the Kings.

I couldn't get that last assists for a triple-double at least. Both Tyreke and Stuckey were having huge games.
