Four Spurs over 17 points ignite win over Nets; Parker, Farmar ejected after fist fight
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (NJN :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, February 25 -- The two small forwards wanted to guard each other in the final moments -- Carmelo Anthony on Corey Maggette and vice-versa. It had to end like that. “I didn't even ask,” Maggette said. “I just told Manu to go somewhere else.” Maggette scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds to help the San Antonio Spurs to a 108-104 victory over the new-look New Jersey Nets. The Spurs (41-17) moved 1 and a half games behind the Lakers (43-16) in the race for the West's best record. “It's an important win for us,” said Manu Ginobili, who was guarding Anthony in the third quarter but moved to Anthony Morrow in the fourth. “We need to be a great team at home to have a better seed for the playoffs.” Ginobili scored 19 points, four assists and eight rebounds. Tim Duncan had 19 points and nine rebounds staying perfect from the field (8-of-8 field goals), dominating in the first half, scoring 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting as the Spurs built a 56-54 advantage. San Antonio increased its lead to 14 points in the third quarter before a 14-2 run helped New Jersey pull within 68-66. Morrow hit three consecutive jumpers in the spurt, ending the night with 11 points.

Anthony finished the game with a a game-high 36 points, 22 in the first half, but he shot 2-of-9 from the field when Maggette was defending him. “If you want to win, you have to be able to defend the best player on the opposing team,” Duncan said. “Corey didn't have any flaws on that.” The Spurs responded in the fourth period with a 10-0 run as Duncan ignited it with an up-and-under and Ginobili capped it with a pair of free throws, increasing the lead to 82-70 with 2:03 left. New Jersey then closed to 99-96 on a 3-pointer by Sasha Vujacic, who scored 9 points off the bench. But DeJuan Blair converted two freebies and Larry Hughes added a dunk in the final 15 seconds to seal the win. “We're just trying to get good momentum going heading into the playoffs,” said Blair, who scored 17 points, his best scoring output since February 3 (21 points against the Lakers). “We definitely need to turn it up in the next couple of games to keep our leads. We can't let this happen in May.” Hughes and George Hill added nine points apiece off the bench for San Antonio. When the final buzzer sounded, Maggette mooched some popcorn from a man in courtside seats after a whistle from the referees and the whole arena chanted his name; his wide array of dunks drew tons of “Oohhs” and “Aahhs” from the crowd. “A dunk contest invitation? That's something I would certainly look at,” said Maggette, who participated in the event in 2001.

The loss was the fifth in six games for New Jersey, which is at the 10th seed in the East, struggling to stay in the playoff race. It's clear that the team needs some time to mold after the big trade with Denver in the deadline. “Those are the kind of words that make your heart drop,” said Brook Lopez, who finished with 19 points and a season-high 18 rebounds. “One of the things you shoot for, is making the playoffs. When that doesn't happen, it's a huge disappointment. March is just around the corner, we need to bounce back if we want the eighth seed.” Troy Murphy had 15 points and eight rebounds, making 7-of-9 shots. Chauncey Billups posted six points but 13 assists, 3-of-10 from the field. Jordan Farmar was held scoreless, but the true embarassment for Farmar was his fist fight with San Antonio's Tony Parker (who shot 1-of-9 for 5 points). With 5:47 left in the game, and the Spurs leading 94-90, the game turned ugly when Farmar and Parker became tangled up in a fastbreak. Farmar knocked Parker to the floor with his right elbow, then glared down at him. When Parker stood to face Farmar, the Nets guard threw a punch with his right hand and connected with a solid blow. Parker recovered and also threw a punch at him. Both were immediately ejected and are most certain to get suspensions from the league. “I'm not going to back down from anybody,” Parker said. “I don't care who you are.”

Lost two of three games against them. Thank God I don't have to face them again, at least until the playoffs. :P

hova- wrote:27/10/5 by Timmy D and you lost? Wow, really surprising, I though that your inside presence would beat the Thunder single handedly. At least Gooden played well. (Y)

Yeah Tim is unstoppable. Whenever I'm behind by more than ten points I go with him and he scores easily. I guess the difference was OKC's 3-point shooting, they made them when they had to, I didn't. Gooden's melting nicely.

mandich wrote:Amazing All-star weekend recap , shame you lost , surprised Durant didn't took the game winner. (Y)

Thanks man. I was able to double-team Durant quickly, he was able to pass before a jump ball call. I wanted Parker to stay with Westbrook, and Manu make the double-team on KD, but the game screwed me :(

dare wrote:Hey man I tried the Melo trade before the trade and he still plays for the West despite being a Knicks player. Hope 2k notice this bug.

Yeah, it's a small bug but a bummer for the All-Star Game. We should add that to the 2k12 wishlist...

megarover wrote:Duncan must have dipped into a time chambers because that was 03 Duncan caliber numbers.

Yes, as I told Hova, he's easily my best player. He's having a decline in his scoring, but I'm fine with it if he's a monster on the boards and is averaging a career-high in blocks. :bowdown2:

Last 2 games for Parker: combined 11 points and a combined 3-of-16 from the field. Need to test this team without him so I'm keeping him in street clothes for a couple of games.

River Walk Chronicles ♦ Spurs Beat

Parker suspended; Quinn signed to 10-day contract
    nba.com/spurs/beat | February 26th, 2011

SAN ANTONIO -- Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs and Jordan Farmar of the New Jersey Nets has been suspended three games without pay for getting involved in a fist fight, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations. The incident occurred following a Nets fastbreak with 5:47 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Spurs' 108-104 win over the Nets last night, at the AT&T Center. Parker will serve his suspension in the Spurs next three games: February 27 vs. Memphis; March 1 at Memphis and March 2 at Cleveland. Farmar also will be out for the Nets next three contests: February 26 at Houston; February 28 vs. Phoenix and March 4 vs. Toronto.

More than almost any other NBA player I can think of (perhaps since his ex-Spurs teammate, Bruce Bowen), Parker has a career that is a matter of perspective. On one hand, he's a champion and a gentleman. On the other hand, people just love him. He hung on and hung on through injuries, bruises and perhaps some small struggles in his court play, but found a home in San Antonio and has flourished as a hard worker who plays a big role on the closest thing we have to a dynasty these days along with the Lakers and Celtics. If you are rooting for the Spurs, you gotta love TP. But I would say its unfair for Parker to be suspended like this; not only Farmar started the fight and punched the Frenchman twice -- he did it when Parker was on the floor. Because of the anger of the moment, Parker responded, and he did it without thinking first, so we could say it's an understandable decision by the NBA.

We're not saying Parker is a “clean” player -- in fact, there's some lapses in games where he plays very hard defense. But Farmar clearly whacks Parker with his fists, and Parker then responds with a punch of his own. If Farmar's actions were intentional, and it looks like they were, then he's is just as dirty a player as any other. A suspension for the former Laker was bound to happen eventually, as he has played less and less minutes in coach Avery Johnson's rotation, with Chauncey Billups and D.J. Augustin sharing the point guard duties most of the time -- even Sasha Vujacic and rookie Ben Uzoh have played more minutes than Farmar lately. Nevertheless, Parker does not try and injure guys when he's on defense; he just gets under their skin. Some weak minded ones lose their cool. Parker is very close to signing an extension with the team, and the first games he plays when he returns from the the suspension will be crucial as the extension signing deadline is getting closer and closer.

As George Hill and Manu Ginobili were the only players left in the team who could play in the point, the Spurs signed guard Chris Quinn to a 10-day contract. Quinn, 6'2'', 175 lbs., has appeared in 193 regular season games in four years in the league, with averages of 5.2 points, 2.1 assists and 1.2 rebounds in 15.2 minutes per game, while shooting .390% (150-385) from 3-point land. He enjoyed his best campaign during the 2007-08 season, averaging 7.8 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game in 22.3 minutes of play, starting 25 games for the Heat. Originally signed as a free agent out of Notre Dame by Miami in 2006, Quinn was traded by the Heat to the New Jersey Nets on January 5, 2010 and appeared in two preseason games with the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2010 preseason.

Yeah, needed a win. Melo was unstoppable but at least I held Billups. Parker is actually playing some really nice defense. I'd say the only point guards who gave me headaches are Wall and Westbrook, the other point guards, Parker was able to hold them down. :)

I just wanted to suspend Parker a couple of games, he's struggling badly. I invented some punches between him and Farmar.

What? I didn't stop him, he was huge for them. I stopped Billups, I would have lost if Mr. Big Shot got on a shooting streak.

Valdis wrote:That sucks. You really signed to a 10 day contract? How?

When you go to the free agents screen, choose a free agent and where it says "Years" change it to "10 Day". It didn't work for me when I started the association (I tried to do it for S. Swift), but the option wasn't there. I guess it works after the trade deadline? Not really sure. :?

shadowgrin wrote:ASG coverage blows. j/k. Me likey.

Houndy wrote:Maybe he signed him for a year and called that a 10 day contract :cheeky:

I tried to sign Quinn for a 10-day and he said "I feel insulted. I don't want to talk to the Spurs anymore"... :P So I just signed him for the season and we'll see how he plays, if it doesn't work I'll just waive him.

Weekly Rewind N° 18 • Mo-Pete retires, Quinn joins Spurs and more...
    nba.com/spurs/morningcoffee | February 27th, 2011

    Image
SAN ANTONIO -- Welcome to the latest installment of my “Morning Coffee” blog, Spurs fanatics. I have some more tidbits here in the table for us to discuss. I'm doing a weekly report with things that happened around the league, including: signings & waivings; POTW honors; Power Rankings; injury report; All-Star voting and trading rumors. Hope you join the discussion!

Morris Peterson moving onMorris Peterson announced today his decision of retiring this June. Peterson has not played yet this season due to a foot surgery. “I lived a dream of mine,” Peterson said, “so I feel the luckiest person in the world. I am sad it has come to an end, but I'm certain that I've given every ounce of energy and effor every second I've played here.” In 10 years in the NBA, Peterson played 707 games and averaged 10.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in 27.4 minutes per game. He averaged a career-high 16.8 points and 4.6 rebounds in 82 games with 77 starts with the Toronto Raptors in 2005-06. Peterson played seven years with the Raptors (2000-2007) and three with the New Orleans Hornets (2007-2010). “I am forever grateful to so many people and especially grateful to the Thunder... my only wish is that I would have been a little healthier. The mind is willing, but the body is not able.” Peterson was a first round selection (21st overall) by the Raptors in the 2000 NBA Draft.

Players of the Week • The Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant and the New Jersey Nets' Carmelo Anthony today were named the Western and Eastern Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played February 20 - 26. Bryant and the Lakers had a 3-0 week -- with wins over Atlanta, Portland and the LA Clippers. In the victory over the Hawks, Bryant scored 47 points along with eight boards, five assists and three steals. Kobe finished the week with averages of 31.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 6.0 assists. New Jersey's Anthony averaged 31.5 points along with 4.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists, as the Nets posted a 1-1 week -- a loss to San Antonio and a victory at Houston against the Rockets.

Power RankingsBest teams of the week? LA Lakers (3-0), Memphis (3-0), Orlando (2-0), New York (2-0), Philadelphia (2-0). The worst? LA Clippers (0-4), Cleveland (0-2), Golden State (0-2), Charlotte (0-2), Portland (0-2), Sacramento (1-3). High jumps -- Denver (+3), Milwaukee (+3), Philadelphia (+3), LA Lakers (+2), Memphis (+2), New York (+2), New Jersey (+2). Free falls -- Sacramento (-4), Portland (-4), Houston (-3), Utah (-3), San Antonio (-2), New Orleans (-2), Indiana (-2). Check the power rankings (Top 7) here -- the Spurs fell to the fourth spot.

New Spur Chris Quinn hopes to do more than watch • There were worse places to be last year than playing for the hapless 12-win New Jersey Nets, as they tried to avoid a dubious place in the NBA history books -- Chris Quinn had to sit on the bench and watch it. “Neither pleasant, nor pretty," said Quinn. “It was something to endure, so I could get an opportunity somewhere else.” That new chance came with the San Antonio Spurs' 10-day contract offer. A small opportunity, but an opportunity at the end, to play a huge chip off his shoulder following a season-long frustration in New Jersey. “The organization wanted to develop very young guys,” Quinn said. “As far as the veterans, they said, 'If we can get you out of here, we will.' But we were stuck there, and there was nothing we could do.” Quinn played in only 25 games -- and a team-low 8.9 minutes per game. Quinn was playing his fourth year in the league with the Nets, playing three seasons with the Miami Heat (2006-2009).

“I took the punches and continued to work out and tried to get better. As far as playing, that wasn't an option,” said Quinn, who spent almost the whole year deep in the bench, and behind three different coaches: Lawrence Frank, Tom Barrise and Kiki Vandeweghe. “I was healthy and wasn't given an opportunity. I figured when we weren't winning in the beginning I would get that opportunity, but it didn't happen either.” Now, with this chance the Spurs are giving him, it's about demonstrating that he's still got something to contribute. “Having veteran guys that know how to play the game and want to win,” Quinn said, “That is the continuity plan here. This is an organization that has proven over and over that they know how to triumph.”

With Tony Parker suspended for three games, the Spurs were seeking a reliable backup, who could play right away and give rest to George Hill. “In a perfect world, I'd want Parker back on the team, and no injuries at all. But that ain't gonna happen. I needed a backup and I think Chris can do a great job,” coach Gregg Popovich joked. “Tony's averaging a career-low in points, but he's helping his teammates in the court like never before. He has a Finals MVP trophy in his home, because he accepted his role -- that's probably unreplaceable.” Quinn arrives in San Antonio without a guarantee and wants to show that he's better than what the common wisdom might say -- Popovich didn't rule out a potential signing until the end of the season if Quinn makes an important impact on the squad. “I'm a guy who's been on good and bad teams. I've been hurt and I've been healthy,” Quinn added, “But in my years in the league, there's only one thing I couldn't handle; my time in the court. That's on the coaches. That's why I'm here to do anything the Spurs ask me to do.” Just don't ask him to rot in the bench.

Maggette's flawless night, Duncan's old school performance lead Spurs past Mayo, Robinson, Grizzlies
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (MEM :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, February 27 -- After allowing their last two opponents score over 100 points -- a win and a loss, and both by 4 points or less -- the San Antonio Spurs expected a a low-scoring game from Memphis, specially after a 24-point win in December. When that plan failed, the Spurs enjoyed an opportunity to change their style. Corey Maggette scored 23 points, Larry Hughes set a season-high with 19 off the bench, and Tim Duncan entered the time machine as the Spurs withstood the Grizzlies' 3-point barrage to win the game, 122-112. Memphis lost despite shooting an acceptable 48 percent from the field and an impressive 62 percent from beyond the arc (10-of-16). “The way they were on fire tonight, you have to run it right back at them. That was what we were doing,” Hughes said. “We've been a pretty good defensive team last month, but now we are on a small problematic lapse, I'd say. We are suffering way too many points, we have to work on that.” After San Antonio's Tony Parker received a three-game suspension, the Spurs signed guard Chris Quinn to a 10-day contract and the former Net didn't disappoint: 3 points, two rebounds, three assists, a steal and even a block in only 9 minutes. “I was definitely excited to make my debut with the Spurs,” Quinn said. “I feel I'm now a better person and a better player than before, and hopefully I can convince the coach that I'm useful.”

Maggette said he realized he just repeated a feat he accomplished on January 22: score at least 20 points and stay perfect from the field. Maggs scored 23 points and shot 7-of-7 from the field, including a 3-pointer and 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. “The guys were saying I should keep the ball, create my shot and go to the free-throw line,” Maggette said of his statline. “But all that mattered to me, is that we got the win. We're heading into March with confidence.” The Spurs blocked 10 shots -- Memphis? Only one. “It shows we are real focused on defense,” Duncan said. “Without all these blocks, we would have lost. Just as long as we get the victory, it's ok. We always have trainings and scrimmages to work on our miscues.” Duncan had 3 of the 10 blocks, including 22 points and eight rebounds. “Our offense was very solid, probably one of the best it has been all season,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich added. In total, six Spurs scored in double figures: DeJuan Blair added 16 points and 10 rebounds, while George Hill (starting in place of Parker) and Manu Ginobili scored 12 points each. The Spurs have won two in a row, starting another winning streak, and four of their last five. The Spurs now embark on a small two-game road trip to start March: a rematch at Memphis and the following day, a game at Cleveland against the league-worst Cavaliers.

O.J. Mayo scored a season-high 28 points and was 13-of-21 from the field, and newest Grizzly Nate Robinson added 23 points and a season-high 13 assists. Even with Mayo and Robinson combining for 51 points, the Grizzlies were not close at the end after allowing the Spurs to make 57 percent of their shots from the field in the fourth period (12-of-21). “They're one of the best teams in the West right now and there's a reason why,” said Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins. “It's hard to stop a player like Corey, and the rest of their guys are very athletic. We couldn't slow them down when we needed to.” San Antonio outscored the Grizzlies in the paint 74-42, and their bench outscored Memphis's, 37-19. The Grizzlies, who fell to 14-19 away from the FedEx Center in Memphis, were coming to San Antonio with five consecutive wins. Marc Gasol had 11 points and an incredible career-high of 24 rebounds as the Grizzlies took a 21-12 lead in the first quarter, but a 23-7 run by the Spurs posted a 35-28 lead entering the second period. “It's always nice to get a career-high, but when you lose it doesn't mean anything,” Gasol said. Rudy Gay had 17 and Zach Randolph 14 points for Memphis. “It's definitely not the effort,” Hollins said, “Because three of our players had season-highs. We have to play a little smarter.”

(Y) Quinn had a really nice game. Hopefully he can keep up.

You really need to work on that defense, this kind of a defensive effort is a shame of the Spurs organization :scold:

Quinn definitely had a good debut there. For me, that game by Hughes is a huge stat. If he had a normal instead of great night, that might be the difference between winning and losing.

P.S. Don't hurt Cleveland too bad!

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged.
One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world.
The other, of course, involves orcs.” — John Rogers

lol, good picture

I didn't look at there since I posted here lastly, you made 57 matches  As Valor said, you need a great defense because you allowed 112 points, it reached the highest limit of allowed score for Spurs.
