Curry, Warriors Close 2011 On High NoteDec 30, 2011 Oakland, CA -- "Relentless," was the word point guard Jameer Nelson used to describe Golden State's Stephen Curry in a 126-110 victory over the visiting Orlando Magic, the Warriors final game of 2011.
From the opening quarter Curry attacked the opposition's defense and Nelson in particular, who picked up his second foul just minutes into the match and spent a majority of the night observing from the bench.
With Nelson sidelined in foul trouble, Curry and the Warriors kept the pressure on Orlando's 2nd-year backup point guard, Stanley Knight, who turned in a decent 15 point, 7 assist evening but hurt the Magic with a game-high 7 turnovers.
"Coach (Johnson) told me to stay aggressive and keep the heat on their play makers," said Curry who finished with a game-high 30 points, 7 assists including a perfect 12-12 from the charity stripe. "We knew Dwight (Howard) would be his usual dominant self inside; so the goal was to try and contain everyone else."
Golden State led by 7 after the 1st-quarter and as many as 19 midway through the second, if not for a 7-0 run by Howard to end the quarter which shaved the Warriors' lead down to a dozen by halftime.
But Howard's monster 20 point, 17 rebound night was not enough as Golden State held even with Orlando in the third period and put them away comfortably in the fourth. "Turn the ball over and commit as many fouls as we did, you can expect to lose," said a frustrated Howard.
Also visibly disappointed was Kevin Martin, who lost the personal duel against Vince Carter in the battle of swapped, former teams.
"Those guys know my tendencies and preferences well and forced me to take a few tougher shots than usual," said Martin who went 0-3 from downtown and finished 7-15 from the field for 16 points. Carter totaled 23 points also notching 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals in a solid all-around performance.
Curry and the Warriors will have a few nights off then ring in the 2012 new year defending home court against rising star Tyreke Evans and local rivals, the Sacramento Kings.
