NEW YORK -- Last year's NBA Coach of the Year, 11 time NBA champion and Hall of Famer Phil "Zen Master" Jackson of the Los Angeles Lakers is the recipient of the Red Auerbach Trophy as the 2010-11 NBA Coach of the Year, the NBA announced today.
Jackson totaled 480 points, including 71 first-place votes, from a panel of 123 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Coaches were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote.
This makes it the first time in NBA history that a head coach has won this award on a back-to-back basis. Jackson will also now join Don Nelson and Pat Riley as the only head coaches to win this award on three occasions.
After finishing last season with a record of 59-23 and eventually guiding his Lakers squad to successfully defend their title and adding to his record of championships as a NBA Head Coach with 11, Phil Jackson returned this season for yet another run. In his 20th season as a head coach, Jackson will help the Lakers surpass their previous year's win total of 59 with a 60-22 season. Los Angeles is currently in the second round of the playoffs after sweeping the Sacramento Kings in the Conference Quarterfinals.
Phil Jackson re-joined the Los Angeles Lakers as their head coach on June 14, 2005, less than one year after he left the team to take a year off from coaching. He is currently the NBA's career leader in playoff victories and playoff winning percentage as a head coach.
Jackson guided the Lakers to three titles in his first stint as their head coach from 1999-2004, and guided the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships in his nine years as head coach from 1989-1998.
The Coach of the Year Award is named after legendary coach and Hall of Famer Red Auerbach who guided the Celtics to nine NBA Championships. In 1996, Auerbach was honored as one of the Top 10 Coaches in NBA History as the NBA celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Bulls dominate Celtics, takes Game 1
Chicago, IL - If you did not know any better, you'll think the Bulls are playing an exhibition game against some high school kids.
Shockingly, this was game 1 of the second round playoffs series, and Chicago's opponent, the Boston Celtics, did not play anywhere near the standard required, or expected.
Led by the duo of Derrick Rose and Dwyane Wade, the Chicago Bulls crush the visiting defending Eastern Conference Champion Boston Celtics 91-62 for a quick game 1 victory.
Rose earned player of the game honors after dropping in 22 points and dishing out 10 assists, he was 10 for 20 from the field in 35 minutes of play while Wade added 24 points on 11 for 23 shooting.
But it wasn't the efficient offensive game that made the difference. It was Chicago's defensive efforts.
The Bulls' suffocating defense held Boston to a mere 26 for 82 from the field and 3 for 14 from beyond the arc. Paul Pierce was the only player in double figures for the Celtics, finishing with 24 points and 10 rebounds while the rest of his team were utterly outplayed.
Garnett was 3 for 12, Allen 2 for 15 and Rondo went 1 for 10.
"Give credit to them, they played good and we played bad" Garnett stated after the game "They caught a break with everybody on our team struggling tonight, we ain't going to let this happen again"
The main reason for the Celtics struggles is the presence of the Bulls' big men Joakim Noah and former defensive player of the year Josh Smith. Noah had 14 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks while Smith dropped in 12 points, had 13 boards and 2 swats of his own. Additionally, backup center Brad Miller also had a productive night off the bench, adding 5 points, 5 rebounds and a block on 2 for 3 shooting in just 11 minutes of play.
Chicago pounded the ball inside often and at will as indicated by the 50-24 points in the paint differential. This was a big reason why they shot at an effective clip of 40 for 82 from the field.
However, it was not all glamor and perfection for Chicago, as forward Luol Deng looked hurt following a hard foul by Boston's Rajon Rondo in the second quarter, and left the floor temporary before returning in the second half. Deng was diagnosed with a strained MCL and is questionable for game 2 despite his insistence that everything was fine.
"I'm good to go" said Deng "This isn't going to stop me from whipping their a*ses"

There's nothing unusual about that.
Celtics even series as Big Three strikes back
Chicago, IL - They got embarrass in game 1 by the young Bulls, badly.
They weren't going to let it happen again.
With all members of the Boston big three playing well again, the Celtics tie up the series at 1 games apiece as they defeat the Bulls 100-95.
Ray Allen led the way for the Celtics, going 14 for 27 from the field for a game high 34 points, Paul Pierce added 29 points and 9 rebound while Kevin Garnett had 10 points and 15 boards.
"They jumped us last game, it ain't going to happen again" said Garnett "We are the Eastern Conference Champions, we let them know it tonight"
Rajon Rondo also chipped in with 5 points, 4 rebounds and 10 assists while centers Kendrick Perkins and Rasheed Wallace had 6 points and 8 rebounds each, Perkins added 4 steals.
For Chicago, Derrick Rose and Dwyane Wade once again led the way. Wade finished with a team high 25 points while Rose had a 24 point, 9 assist and 4 rebound performance. However, the two were a combined 17 for 44 from the field and was forced into tough attempts every trip down the court.
Josh Smith added 12 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks while Joakim Noah grabbed a game high 17 rebounds in addition to his 8 points.
But it wasn't enough, as the Celtics came out ready and energized in the third quarter after the game being tied at the half. After a 8-0 run, Boston never trailed again despite the valiant effort from the Bulls.
"Just a disappointing result for us here at home really" said Bulls coach Byron Scott "Now we need to go and retake home court in Boston, this is going to be rough"
Despite often being a team that lacked rebounding, the Celtics pounded the glass and actually out-rebounded Chicago, a very good rebounding team, 51-46. They had 9 offensive rebounds, which led to a disparity of 13-0 second chance buckets.
Also, unlike in game 1, Boston went inside and attacked the rim aggressively, as evident in their 40 points in the paint and 24 Free Throw attempts.
"We allowed too much penetration" said Scott "Our whole defense is collapsing as a result and they are getting wide open shots"
For sharp shooters like Ray Allen, that is deadly.
Game Three will be in Boston as the Bulls will look to regain their home court advantage.

No he doesn't. In Noah we trust.
