Balls to the Wall in Montreal - Temporary Hiatus

Hi all. It's been a while since I've been around here, but I'm back with a new association. I'm really enjoying this one, so hopefully it stays. It'll be pretty low key, no flash or frills, and will exist mostly as a personal reference point. Though, a little bit of back story will be provided. It starts in the 2009 offseason.

Edit: forgot to give my association details. I'll be simming most games, and using "coach mode" for the non-sim games. 12 min quarters. Default rosters (with some tweaks). My own sliders. No CPU trading prior to Dec. 15 of each year (to avoid them trading free agents). I will only make trades the CPU proposes to me or for players on the trading block. As an expansion franchise, I will be limiting myself to the expansion salary cup rules. Therefor, I will have a self-imposed salary cap of 66% of the league salary cap in the 1st season, and 75% in the 2nd.

Edit #2: There's been a slight change of plans regarding how I'm approaching this dynasty. Turns out that my roster was too shitty to play the games on coach mode, as we were struggling to put up 60 points against even the worst teams. So, I reloaded my beginning of season save, and decided to sim out the whole 1st season, so that I'd at least have a high draft pick on my roster.

NBA ANNOUNCES DISSOLUTION OF BOBCATS FRANCHISE

The NBA released a statement today notifying the dissolution of the Charlotte Bobcats franchise. Owner Michael Jordan filed for personal bankruptcy earlier in the summer (sources close to Jordan cite gambling debts as the cause of his financial troubles) and folded the team. In most cases, the league would step in and take control of the franchise, but according to the press release the league as a whole lost "approximately $350 million" in the 08-09 season. That, coupled with the uncertain economic climate and the potential 2011 lockout, caused the league to fold the franchise. A dispersal draft of Charlotte's former players is planned.

NBA ANNOUNCES NEW CANADIAN CLUB, DIVISIONAL RE-ALIGNMENT

With the folding of the Charlotte Bobcats, the NBA was left with an unbalanced, 29-team league. Prepared to play out the 2009-10 season as such, the league was stunned when a group of Montreal investors quickly put together a proposal for a Montreal team to join in time for the start of the season. The NBA, desperate for the $300 million expansion fee, granted the group's request, and the Montreal Monarchs were born.

The addition of another east coast team, however, necessitated a drastic divisional restructuring. The new league alignment now looks like this:

MONTREAL MONARCHS UNVEIL LOGO, JERSEYS

The NBA's newest franchise, the Montreal Monarchs, unveiled their logo and jerseys at a press conference today. Also revealed was the team's operational and coaching staff. Here's a quick look at the new team's jerseys:






As for the staff, the team has hired hitherto unknown minor league coach Gus Hattford, whose top assistant will be Lester Cummings. The scouting staff will consist of Quentin Payton as the top NBA scout, with J.P. Haynes, Tyronn Sandford, and Cam Page rounding out the prospect scouts. The trainer is Jon Fox.

Having carried Orlando to the best record in the East, Dwight Howard staked his claim to the 2009-10 MVP trophy. Howard led the league in blocked shots, was third in rebounding, and was first among centers in points. His dominating defensive presence was key to Orlando's ability to shut down their opponents, and there's not a more feared presence in the paint than that of Dwight Howard.

Tyreke Evans didn't shoot the ball very well in his rookie year. He didn't lead the rookie class in points, or rebounds, or assists. There were flashier names to choose from, players with more gaudy numbers. What stuck out about Evans, though, was his presence. Whenever he was on the court he was making things happen for the Kings, be it the pass the leads to the assist, rotating quickly to cover a shooter, pushing the ball up the court, or wreaking havoc in the passing lanes. Evans pushed a surprising Kings squad into the playoffs, and for that he rightfully gets the RoY nod.

6TH MAN OF THE YEAR

Marcus Camby adds a 6th Man award to his trophy case (which already includes a defensive player of the year). He was a stabilizing force on the resurgent Clippers all season long, anchoring the defense, mentoring Blake Griffin, and generally doing anything he was asked.

Antonio Daniels had a career year - in the final season of his career. Despite his stated intention to retire at season's end, voters couldn't bring themselves to ignore Daniels' late-career resurrection. As a member of the Monarchs, Daniels helped lead the expansion franchise past all expectations. Later traded to Portland, Daniels filled in nicely for an injured Brandon Roy down the stretch, helping the Blazers win the Pacific division.

Congrats on getting Wall in the draft. Definitely lucked out with the top 2 teams passing on him. OKC really fucked up their pick. Monarchs didn't make much of a splash in free agency, but you got a solid backcourt now with Wall and Afflalo plus Bayless as the combo guard sixth man.

Thanks Lamrock. I'm really stoked on my roster now. Off the top of my head (haven't played in a couple of days) I'm pretty sure my rotation now looks like this:

PG - Wall/Bayless/Watson
SG - Afflalo/Rush
SF - Outlaw/Balkman
PF - Warrick/Wilcox/Gani Lawal (2nd round pick)
C - Okur/Przybilla/Koufus/Brezec (oddest named center quartet in NBA history?)

I like the looks of that. Should be fun, but challenging. we're gonna be pushing the ball all the time, no matter what.
