SEASON AWARDS
MOST VALUABLE PLAYERDwight Howard, C (ORL) - 21.8 PPG/13.1 RPG/0.9 APG/1.1 SPG/3.1 BPG/58% FG/14% 3PT/53% FT
Runners-up: LeBron James (CLE), Tim Duncan (SAS), Carmelo Anthony (DEN), Kobe Bryant (LAL)
Having carried Orlando to the best record in the East, Dwight Howard staked his claim to the 2009-10 MVP trophy. Howard led the league in blocked shots, was third in rebounding, and was first among centers in points. His dominating defensive presence was key to Orlando's ability to shut down their opponents, and there's not a more feared presence in the paint than that of Dwight Howard.
ROOKIE OF THE YEARTyreke Evans, G-F (SAC) - 13.5 PPG/2.9 RPG/3.9 APG/1.8 SPG/0.7 BPG/43% FG/34% 3PT/73% FT
Runners-up: Stephen Curry (GSW), Johnny Flynn (MIN), Blake Griffin (LAC), Brandon Jennings (MIL)
Tyreke Evans didn't shoot the ball very well in his rookie year. He didn't lead the rookie class in points, or rebounds, or assists. There were flashier names to choose from, players with more gaudy numbers. What stuck out about Evans, though, was his presence. Whenever he was on the court he was making things happen for the Kings, be it the pass the leads to the assist, rotating quickly to cover a shooter, pushing the ball up the court, or wreaking havoc in the passing lanes. Evans pushed a surprising Kings squad into the playoffs, and for that he rightfully gets the RoY nod.
6TH MAN OF THE YEARMarcus Camby, C-F (LAC) - 6.3 PPG/8.7 RPG/1.1 APG/0.3 SPG/1.9 BPG/46% FG/0% 3PT/67% FT
Runners-up: Rafer Alston (NJN), Rip Hamilton (DET), Mike Miller (WAS), Andres Nocioni (SAC)
Marcus Camby adds a 6th Man award to his trophy case (which already includes a defensive player of the year). He was a stabilizing force on the resurgent Clippers all season long, anchoring the defense, mentoring Blake Griffin, and generally doing anything he was asked.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEARDwight Howard, C (ORL) - see MVP
Runners-up: Tim Duncan (SAS), Kevin Garnett (BOS), Josh Smith (ATL), T. Thomas (CHI)
MOST IMROVED PLAYERAntonio Daniels, G (MTL-POR) - 9.4 PPG/2.0 RPG/5.5 APG/0.8 SPG/0.2 BPG/45% FG/43% 3PT/78% FT
Runners-up: Nazr Mohammed (OKC), Anthony Randolph (GSW), Lou Williams (PHI), Jason Thompson (SAC)
Antonio Daniels had a career year - in the final season of his career. Despite his stated intention to retire at season's end, voters couldn't bring themselves to ignore Daniels' late-career resurrection. As a member of the Monarchs, Daniels helped lead the expansion franchise past all expectations. Later traded to Portland, Daniels filled in nicely for an injured Brandon Roy down the stretch, helping the Blazers win the Pacific division.
