Clippers Rumors

Postby KidJustin on Wed Aug 18, 2010 4:10 am

Mike Dunleavy, Sr. to return to Clippers' front office?

Image

There has been speculations that newly appointed Assistant General Manager, KidJustin is taking on the task of dealing with front office personnel before actual NBA players and prospects.

A source close to the Los Angeles Clippers who wished to remain anonymous has admitted that the organization might be willing to re-hire Mike Dunleavy, Sr. and pay him the remainder of his contract over the course of the new contract rather than the lump sum Dunleavy was asking for in the arbitration he filed back in June.

It is unknown what role he will play, but during the press release of the coaching staff, there has been no announcements of any scouting positions being filled.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite poor Summer League, Sofoklis Schortsanitis to sign with Clippers?

Image

Sofoklis Schortsanitis, also known as Big Sofo or Greek Shaq, is rumored to be on a return flight back to the United States. Possibly for a contract with the Clippers, who own his draft rights after selecting him in the second round of the 2003 NBA draft.

During this past offseason his contract with Olympiacos expired and he elected to participate in the NBA Summer League with the Clippers, with an eye towards joining the team. However, because the NBA Summer League is very unstructured and guard-centric, Sofo did not have a good showing and failed to impress the then newly appointed Head Coach Vinny Del Negro. Thus no contract was offered. The Clippers were also busying with contract situations of their own; attempting to land the biggest free agent LeBron James or another high caliber talent and then focused attentions to see if a returned from injury Tracy McGrady was capable of being a top tier NBA talent once again, that it is speculated that they were not able to offer a contract before Sofo left to fly back to Europe to train with the Greek national team.

Greek media also speculated a number of European teams interested in the big man, but he is currently still a free agent.

Clippers News

News from training camp

Today was the last day of training camp at the Clippers training facility in Playa Vista and while the veterans looked like they have brushed off any offseason rust during the week, some of the rookies had some struggles the coaching staff hoped they would get through before the season opener against the Portland Trailblazers.

Coach Vinny Del Negro, brought in because of his success taking a very young Bulls team into the playoffs two season in a row, was caught many times yelling at the rookies for their mistakes. Coach Del Negro was not available for comments after training camp concluded.

GM Niel Olshey had this to say about the new coach:
No, I'm not worried at all about how he is acting towards the rookies. I have complete trust in him to motivate this young team properly and get us where we want to be. Back in the playoffs.

Despite the lack of skills that were on display by the Clipper rookies, 2nd Round Draft Pick Willie Warren and Undrafted Marqus Blakely did just enough to survive not being cut during this tough week.
ImageImage

Warren was once projected to be a lottery pick, but after deciding to stay another year at Oklahoma State, he found his stock plummet greatly. The main reason, he shined as then teammate Blake Griffin's side kick and then floundered when Griffin enter the NBA Draft in 2009 and he was left to be the main guy at Oklahoma State.

Warren:
Of course it's a relief to know that my job here with the Clippers is still safe! But this game is a business and I understand that. I just have to keep practicing and developing my all-around game. Blake knows the kind of player I can be, I just have to continue to show the coaching staff. At least I got my shooting stroke going for me, I know the team really needs everyone to step up their perimeter game.

Assistant Reggie Miller has been putting each and every player into rigorous shooting drills and had this to say about the rookie shooter Willie Warren:
Willie? A shooter? You people must have been watching someone else. The kid has a knack for throwing the ball toward the basket and having it going, I'll give him that. But a shooter? Please.

He continued:
Maybe he will be a shooter, if I can get through to him and his form. Right now his release is so low, he's practically shooting the ball from his chest. Dead-eye or not, unless your Shawn Marion, expect your shot to get blocked. A LOT.

Blakely on the other hand, had little to say about himself and that he was just happy to be part of the organization and the new changes they are going through to turn this franchise around.

Blakely, listed at 6' 5" played PF (believe it or not) in college. It is unlikely that will be his position in the league. But based on his skills (can't shoot, can't dribble, but an athletic freak who can score near the rim) it seems like the only possible solution. If he can't turn in around, don't expect him to stick around with this team, let alone the league.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall evaluation of the other Clippers rookies:
Blake Griffin - Technically a rookie, technically not, but was the only one that showed that he deserved to be in this league. All signs point to him starting and making his debut against the Trailblazers. Against former number 1 pick that missed their first season, Greg Oden, none the less. Assistant Danny Manning said he is very exited to work with Griffin this season and already has a plan on how to further develop his offensive game.

Al-Farouq Aminu - While he did show strides of improving his defense, especially in steals. He failed to show much else. His shot is still very weak for a SF. He also still has a very shy personality, which does not bode well for him as he regularly becomes timid on the court. And that is against teammates, imagine what will happen when he goes up against Brandon Roy. Ryan Gomes is expected to start over Aminu, but the Clippers are crossing their fingers this guy can develop and be their starting SF in the future.

Eric Bledsoe - Erratic, Erratic, Erratic....but very spectacular. After playing a season off his natural position because he chose to play along side John Wall in Kentucky, he is showing signs of being a capable backup point guard in this league. His sometimes unnecessary passes and shot selection are made up by his sheer intensity when playing the game. He still has a lot of refining to do, so still expect Randy Foye to take the majority of the minutes.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In other news, the Clippers have announced that Mike Dunleavy, Sr. has been hired as a scout for the team and has already been given an assignment to scout some of the upcoming draft prospects in the southwestern region of the US. Alfonso Duran was also hired as a scout for the team and will primarily head the scouting for prospects overseas, especially in Europe. Which will be very vital as the projected number 1 overall pick, Lance Weber, is currently playing in Europe.

We caught up with Assist. GM KidJustin, who had this to say:
We thought enough was enough with the whole Dunleavy situation. The organization just got through a lawsuit between former GM Elgin Baylor and our owner Mr. Sterling; we did not need any more side show attractions that will hurt our young team from winning. As I worked here, I always appreciated Dunleavey's mind and the way he can properly evaluate talent as well as get the gameplan ready for the next team the Clippers are going to face. I hope that this will finally put things to rest.

Recap of Opening Night
Image

ImageImage

In the first match-up between the 2 super trios of the league. It appears that the Heat have got the Celtics number in this one, blowing them out by 30 points. With the King scoring 40 points, also this could have been worse as Wade had a quite 13 point night. Bosh also had 25 points in 25 minutes despite being in foul trouble.
ImageImage

The Portland Trailblazers just torched the hottest offensive team in the league, 120-97. It looks like Amar'e Stoudemire is really going to be missed in Arizona. If the Trailblazers are for real, expect them to steam roll against their next opponent if they aren't ready.
Brandon Roy:
The travel to Staples Center against the Clippers shouldn't be too bad, they better be ready because we are coming!

ImageImage

Speaking of Stoudemire, look what he did in his debut. It looks like the Knicks have figured things out...on defense? The Raptors were held to only 69 points in the game. Then again, this is the team that lost both Hedo and Bosh in the same offseason.

ImageImage

The Wizards and the Magic in the first nail biter of the season. And it was the return of Gilbert Arenas (33 points 10 assits) that overshadowed the rookie debut of John Wall (7 points 1 assist). Is Arenas back? Is Wall a bust?
Recently acquired, Quentin Richardson suffered an injury (sprained foot) that will cause him to miss up to 3 weeks.
BREAKING NEWS! Reports have shown that Aaron Mintz has released a statement stating that his client, Nick Young is very displeased with the Wizards organization. That he demands to be traded away from a team that is not set on winning as a team and not set on utilizing his talents to take this franchise to the next level. Mintz also states that his client would like to return to the west coast to play.

ImageImage

This one is for George7,
Kevin Durant's 25 points was shadowed only by Derrick Rose's 25 points himself. Off the bench, shooters Daequan Cook (OKC) and Kyle Korver (CHI) came through and each scored double digits. Cook only made 1 3-pointer while Korver had 0, oddly enough. Rumor has it that the Bulls might be considering signing undrafted shooter Dionte Christmas, how this will effect Korver's role on the team is unknown. The story of the night was Boozer's 22 points which was the real difference maker.

The Lakers received their rings and, despite barely playing their bench, also defeated the Houston Rockets 105-91 behind Kobe Bryants 33 Points.

*note I wont be writing about other teams all the time. Only for opening night and if there is something special that has to be brought the attention of the audience. In this case it has both  I was hoping to play the Clippers game opener and write a recap, but I got busy so I'll save it for tomorrow.

Martti., haha yea i might recap only a few other (non Clippers) games depending on how they will fit into the story :D

I'm more of a Celtic fan than a Heat fan, but that blowout is getting me excited for the challenge when my Clippers will face them....that won't be until January thought... :?

George7, haha Christmas is a very very streaky shooter from Philly, but played college ball at Temple (So Cal). He was one of the players the Clippers were interested in last year, but he never stuck. If Warren doesn't work out for me, I was thinking of dropping him for Christmas, but if the Bulls get to him first.... :(

And thanks for the training camp comment...too bad there won't be anymore of those until next season. But maybe i've got some other stories similar up my sleeve

now i can't wait to start writing about my own game! so excited i'm a little nervous thinking about it  i hope it wont disappoint since i've gotten all this effort with the off-court things it would be a shame to have a bad dynasty now with poor game recaps (which are the main stories right?)

**PS.
I've been reading through Sit's A Legend is Born Dynasty (the first one)...wow! i'm trying to draw inspiration there for any of my off-court stories

In honor of the late Lorenzen Wright, the Clippers wore the jerseys from 1996, the year Wright was drafted by the Clippers.

The Clippers are a team with many new faces, including two new ones in the starting lineup. And it showed early one as the Clippers struggled to score in the first minute and a half. Oden won the tip off which immediately lead to a LaMarcus Aldrige post move and score over Blake Griffin. "Welcome to the NBA Mr. Griffin."

The opening sequence after that included consecutive turnovers by Baron Davis and then Andre Miller followed by a wide open 3 point attempt by Ryan Gomes. After a Portland rebound, Chris Kaman was able to come up with a steal which resulted in Blake's first chance to score. He misses an easy bucket right at the rim. To make matters worse, Miller would draw Griffin in the post and end up scoring another two points on him. It was not until a fast break headed by Eric Gordon to Ryan Gomes was blocked out of bounce when Coach Del Negro screamed at Baron to control the pace. Once the ball was inbound, Baron immediately fed the ball to Kaman in the post for the Clippers first points, and first jam of the season.
Image

The Clippers began to claw there way back after trailing 4-0. Baron Davis missing a layup at point blank range to tie the game up at 6-6, luckily Griffin is already at the other end and his defense forces the Blazers to take a tough shot. Baron was able to get the ball into the post where Miller went down the help, Kaman kicked the ball back out and Baron hit a wide open 3 pointer to take the lead 7-6 at the 8:51 mark of the first quarter. That lead is short lived after a shooters bounce gives Brandon Roy and his Blazers a one point lead. In the very next play Baron rushes the ball down the floor and hits Eric Gordon for a wide open 3 pointer in the corner to take a 2 point lead this time.

Eric Gordon played hard defense on Roy forcing him to throw it away a few times.
Image

Miller commits his second foul at the 7:20 mark causing Portland to call a timeout. Marcus Camby enters the game and receives a standing ovation from the Clippers fans. Camby was a fan favorite and a complete class act while he was with the team last year.

The Clippers immediately try to feed Griffin the ball inside where he is successful two times in a row, but the Clippers still could not pull away. Primarily because of Brandon Roy's timely post moves and jump shots that kept the game either tied or within two points. At the 4:55 mark, DeAndre Jordan gives Kaman a rest and immediately blocks Dante Cunningham's shot attempt. Portland would get the ball back and take the lead after a Roy jump shot over Gordon. At the other end Baron Davis ties the game with a layup and follows it up with a steal on defense allowing Gordon to post up Roy for the lead. The Clippers defense was excellent tonight. Baron stole the ball in the very next play which lead to an monster alley-oop to Blake Griffin!
Image

In the very next Clippers offensive play, Baron hits Jordan for another alley-oop! Baron with 5 assists early on.
Image

Alrdige tries to answer, but Griffin's defense is too tough as he causes Alrdige to travel. The next time Clippers are on defense, Baron yet again comes up with another steal, this time near half court where he is off to the races. He scores in transition and gets fouled by rookie Luke Babbit. Baron ends up missing the free throw and Roy heads the other way and drains a 3 pointer after they have been stuck at 20 for the past few minutes. Coach Del Negro takes no chances and calls a timeout.

Al-Farouq Aminu got his first chance as Coach Del Negro replaced Ryan Gomes, who had been shooting poorly. His first points of his career was from a layup stretching from behind the basket around two Blazers.
Image

A costly 3rd foul by Baron causes him to sit for the rest of the 1:19 left in the 1st quarter. Batum hits a 3 to cut the lead, but Gordon answers with a 3 of his own. Camby gets a dunk on Chris Kaman and after a nice steal and pass ahead by Roy, Camby scores again with 2 seconds left. The 1st quarter comes to an end at 37-32 in favor of the Clippers.

The second was another struggle for the team, especially as the Blazers realized that a backcourt of Randy Foye and Eric Gordon was not the best at handling the ball and thus applied pressure defense. The Clippers struggled to score inside and out, but a 3 pointer from Gordon kept the lead comfortable.

Due to Baron's foul trouble, Bledsoe made his way onto the floor at the 8:28 mark of the quarter. A pair of Babbit free throws and a Roy slam cut the lead to only 1. An irate Del Negro called timeout in hopes to regroup. Coming out of the time out, they ran their play and got Gomes the ball open for 3, but he could not put it down. Three point shooting from the wing has always been and still his a weak link in the Clippers roster. Alrdige would slam the ball at the other end to give the Blazers back the lead.

After many miscues, such as an Bledsoe attempt to alley to Griffin ended up in the stands, and wide open misses by Gomes, the Clippers found themselves behind after Bradon Roy put on a shooting clinic good to give Portland a 14-2 run.

The Clippers battle back with help from their bench. Bledsoe scores his first points of his career. A slam dunk in traffic against 3 Blazers cuts the lead to only 3.
Image

Baron would return at the 4:51 mark and on his very first move he drives to the basket and draws in Oden leaving Jordan wide open for another alley-oop!
Image

But another costly foul by Baron causes him to set with 4 fouls for the rest of the half. The Blazer would go on with another run while Baron sits. But excellent play by rookies Bledsoe and Aminu quickly cut the lead to 4 after an alley-oop between the two, another dunk by Bledsoe, and a jumpshot by Bledsoe. The crowd was chanting "DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE!" and then all of a sudden Bledsoe causes Bayless to take a forced shot with the shot clock winding down. With good ball movement, Randy Foye gets the ball at the top of the key to shorten the lead to 2 with ouly 49 seconds remaining.

But after a jumper by Batum, missed free throws by Craig Smith, and a slam dunk by Aldridge, the Portland lead is back up to 6. With only 11 seconds remaining, the Clippers get the ball down the floor and Eric Bledsoe hits a jumper in the corner at the buzzer and trims the lead down to only 4. A high scoring half with Portland 72 and the Clippers 68. Baron Davis was the player of the half with 11 points and 9 assists, despite Gordon leading the team with 19 points. On the other side, Roy had already racked up 25 points. Griffin was also near a double double with 10-9 in the first half. The Blazers shot an amazing 60% from the field in the second quarter.

Another poor start in the 3rd for the Clippers as Gordon missed his first shot attempts of the half. Kaman was able to get a block on Oden, but without any help Miller was able to collect the ball and score anyways. Gordon would throw the ball away that would lead to another Alridge slam at the other end. It was not until Baron decided to take it himself and scored on both Roy and Miller pulling the score to 70-76, Blazers. Alrdige would answer with a facial on Kaman plus the foul, but he would not be able to convert the free throw. Griffin come up with a monster block on Roy, who almost ended up in the first row. No foul called as it was all ball and Roy's momentum is what carried him out. When the Clippers get the ball back, Baron is able to jam it home to put them within 2.
Image

Good defense by Griffin and Baron make Alrdige miss twice under the basket allowing Griffin to score a layup to tie the game at 80 a piece with 9:12 left in the 3rd. As they continued to trade baskets, Roy hit a clutch fade away jumper over Gordon and Kaman with the shot clock at 4 to give his team a 2 point lead.
Image

Again the teams traded baskets, until Aminu came up with a steal and a slam to take a 2 point lead with 3:43 left. The bench was coming through for the team as by the 3rd the Clippers had the advantage 30 points compared to the Blazers bench of only 10 points. Andre Miller would end the quarter with a 3 pointer to keep the game within 3 points.

The Clippers manged to shoot 69% from the field in the 3rd, but their slow start and poor defense allowed the Blazers to stay close and shoot 57% of their own.

The fourth quarter was another story all together. This time the Clippers come out with a great start. Gordon and Aminu hit their jumpers. Roy is forced to take a contested 3 pointer. And their tough defense would force Miller to throw the ball away numerous times. The Clippers eventually went on and 8-0 run, including 6 in a row by Craig Smith, who also chipped in 2 block shots during that stretch.

With Baron and Bledsoe on the break, Bledsoe pulled up and drained a 3 pointer, but it does not look like Coach Del Negro was pleased with the rookie's shot selection. Baron would commit another foul and will end up being done for the night, finishing with 23 points, 10 assists, and 5 fouls. Bledsoe also would not return as the backcourt was replaced by Gordon and Foye. Bledsoe headed striaght to the end of the bench without saying a word to Coach Del Negro.

The lead would stretch to 12 when Kaman sends Camby to the line after fouling him near the basket. Camby would go on to miss those free throws but the rebound was collected by Luke Babbit who is sent to the line this time by Griffin. Babbit would proceed to miss both free throws. With 2 minutes remaining in the 4th, the Clippers lead 137-119 as Coach emptied out his bench. Willie Warren made his debut and he took his first shot attempt. A 3 pointer, which was blocked by Brandon Roy.

Shooting Assistant Reggie Miller:
See, what did I tell you...blocked.

After a few more failed attempts, Warren finally got a dunk in the game. With less than 24 seconds remaining, Foye held the ball at half court to let time expire as the Clippers would win their first game of the new season.

The stat line of the night was the Clippers bench putting in 55 points compared to the Blazers only contributing 11. But if Brandon Roy scores 41 points, does it really matter? The Clippers also held the Blazers to only 22 points on 38% shooting in the fourth, they previously scored over 30 points and shot over 50% in the first three quarters. The Clippers were able to win this game thanks to a stellar fourth quarter, but they must continue to train together and not struggle at the beginning. They also shot a dismal 24% from 3 point land, something the team failed to address this offseason.

The Clippers will immediately fly up to Oakland for their game tomorrow against David Lee and the Warriors.

Post game quote:
Blake Griffin:
This was a very tough game, we showed we had the heart and the talent to pull it out in the end. But we still have a lot of work together. As individuals and as a team. It feels good to get the debut out of the way. I think I did pretty good, what do you think? Any disappointment?

Baron jumped in:
What was your first shot of the NBA like again? haha...

Blake:
Ha..ha..shush...
