Chapter 3
“What was that?” Will Sit had both of his arms in the air as he was shouting from the sideline.
Reshawn Tyson looked down at Russell Westbrook who was laying on the floor. Ty turned around and made a face at the game officials. He also had both his arms in the air and began to shrug and shake his head.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Ty was muttering as the ref called a technical foul on him.
“That’s a flagrant!” he yelled at Ty.
Westbrook sank one freebie and the Kings retained possession at halfway. Kevin Durant was trying to stay in front of Moses Chara but the Kings superstar drove hard towards the hoop. He tried to get past Durant who would not have any of that as he yanked Chara’s jersey and the ref called foul. Chara had the flu and had struggled all night but he was playing great in the final quarter of a tight game. He was chewing gum and approached Durant on his way to the free throw line.
“You can’t touch this.”
Durant sneered, “You’re a dick.”
Chara lined up both of his free throws and kept his shooting hand in the air as he backpedalled down the floor after the second made free throw. His pair of freebies had the Kings up by 3 with 40 seconds left. The crowd was booing as Chara reached the other side of the court and he reacted by holding his right fist in the air in a sign of defiance. The crowd jeered even louder as Kidd pushed the ball up the floor. Durant evaded his defender and freed himself up on the perimeter. He caught the ball and launched a three point attempt. The ball grazed the front of the rim and Mingyu Li was able to grab the rebound. The lanky forward put up a shot and converted the second chance opportunity as the Seattle faithful roared with massive approval.
“One point down,” Sit nodded at George Karl and then looked back towards the court.
The Kings unsurprisingly put the ball in Chara’s hands with the clock ticking down. Chara, who had 12 points, dribbled down the clock as his teammates ran an isolation for him. Durant was up to the challenge of staying in front of Chara. The shot clock was about to run out as Chara dribbled hard to his left and put up a pump fake. That gave David Lee time to rush over to help put pressure on Chara. He put up a shot over both the players and from the moment it left his fingers; he knew it wasn’t good. Chara sprinted towards the hoop, leaving his defenders in the dust. It looked like a slow motion replay as he leaped towards the hoop and sailed towards the rim. The ball bounced up off the hoop and he grabbed it as it came back down. Chara landed and was swarmed by defenders. The ref called a foul, stopping the game with 8 seconds left. Chara would go to the line and calmly sink another two free throws to bring his tally to 14. Seattle had two time outs left so Sit called one.
“Let’s get an easy two points here. Get the two and then we go and foul them,” he instructed his troops.
Durant spotted Jason Kidd on the edge of the perimeter. Kidd caught the ball and deftly passed the ball to a wide open Chris Wilcox on the low block. Wilcox nailed the short jumper and the Stealth immediately shifted their focus to defence. With less than five seconds left and being one point down, everyone scrambled to try and foul the Kings in order to send them to the line. Sit was jumping up and down on the sideline as the clock ran out of time and no foul call had been made. Sit jumped onto the court and ran up to one of the game officials.
“What was that? Where was the call?” Sit had both arms in the air and yapping to the ref.
The crowd was booing both teams off the court tonight as Andrew Bogut and Lee pulled Sit away from the officiating crew. The Kings came away with a close win. The Stealth still had that sour taste in their mouths from months ago when they lost to Sacramento in the Western Conference Finals. Durant was the first to get out of there and headed straight to his locker to get changed and leave.
“A fax from the head office,” the secretary put it on Sit’s desk.
“Expected,” Sit laughed.
He had been fined for his post-game comments and conduct after the Stealth-Kings game. David Stern had been on a three year long crusade to silence coaches and managers from criticising his game officials and Sit had clearly crossed the line. His secretary left his office and Sit returned his thoughts to a more pressing matter.
“I’m thinking that we need a bit of a shakeup,” Sit said to Karl.
“What do you mean?”
“We could probably get a good deal involving David,” Sit suggested, “He’s a great guy and a great player but he just hasn’t performed as well as he could have for us. I’m not happy with how he’s played this season. I think in an alternative universe, he’d probably be an All-Star calibre forward.”
“He’d probably still be playing for the Knicks,” laughed Karl, “And still playing because they never got Lebron.”
“I signed David up to be a third option but he hasn’t been that impressive. I don’t think he’d want to stay with us after this season. Might as well try to get something out of this for him. Final year of his contract after all,” Sit said.
Karl stated, “You don’t call the shots around here anymore.”
“Doesn’t hurt trying to bring it up with management,” Sit smiled.
“Any players you thinking of targeting?” Karl asked.
Sit replied, “I was hoping you’d help me with that.”
Karl thought for a moment, “let’s make a list.”
“What do you think of these trade rumours?” David Lee was being quizzed after a Stealth training session.
Lee was a bit taken back at the directness of the reporter posing him the question. His agent had called to indeed tell him that Seattle were thinking about trading him and he had to be prepared if he had to leave.
“I’m not performing up to scratch so I’m not surprised that I might be getting shopped around,” Lee politely answered.
The reporter pressed on, “We’ve heard that the team is not happy with your performance over the past few years. Do you think you have justified the contract you signed with the team?”
Lee nodded, “We’ve made the playoffs every year I’ve been here haven’t we?”
“You’re off contract at the end of the season. If you were still here, would you want to stay in Seattle even if they are trying to get rid of you?”
“If the opportunity persists, I would love to stay with the Stealth. They’ve treated me well. Being in trade talks is all part of the business. Chris Bosh has been in trade rumours for a while now and same with other high calibre stars so I can’t really complain. I’m just going to keep coming to work and doing my thing,” Lee stated before turning around to leave.
“Wait! David!” the reporter yelled and followed Lee.
Reshawn Tyson was sitting with Rocky Akonnor and sipping on his water bottle.
“You look a bit under the weather,” Rocky mentioned to his friend.
“Just getting some bad sleep recently.”
“You going to be ok?”
Ty wiped the sweat off his forehead, “I will be fine.”
“Momma asked if you want to come around for dinner tonight?”
Ty grinned, “I’d be glad to.”
On the other side of the gym, Coach Sit was walking rookie Jao Wu through a few things.
“I know that it may get frustrating at times but we are working you in slowly,” Sit explained to Wu.
“I want a bigger role,” Wu exclaimed.
Sit patted him on the shoulder, “I’m sorry but I just can’t fit you in right now.”
“Even with all of the trade rumours, David Lee has been exceptional tonight!” Doug Collins said, “Seattle has really dominated this second half and they are pulling out all of the stops to win this final period.”
Reggie Miller added, “A career night from Bogut and Lee’s best game for this season. You get your usual output from Durant and Tyson and you’ve got yourselves a big Seattle win. Jason Kidd doesn’t even need to score a bucket for these guys to win.”
Collins laughed, “And Jason hasn’t scored a single point in this one but he’s led his team brilliantly against the Timberwolves. Let’s go down courtside with Cheryl Miller who is standing next to Jason Kidd. What do you have for us Cheryl?”
“Jason, you had 13 assists but no points,” Cheryl stated, “What’s it feel like when you have a night like this?”
Kidd responded, “I’m just lucky to be on a team with so many offensive weapons. I’m lucky to have two of the best scorers in the league and our frontcourt really stepped up tonight.”
“David Lee has been in the news lately and he’s come out tonight to score a season high 20 points. What advice would you have for him regarding all of these trade rumours?”
“I spoke to David before the game and told him to keep his chin up and to play and show what he has to offer our team. I am tremendously proud of how he has played recently and I hope he continues to work hard.”
“Jao Wu really came into the game and gave you guys a bit of a spark, how important do you think his performance would have been in boosting his confidence a little bit?”
Kidd thought for a second, “He’s really working hard behind the scenes. As a number 1 pick who doesn’t get all the minutes he would have expected to come with that draft position, I think he is handling it well. He’s a confident kid and tonight he showed that he can come in and change the pace of the ball game.”
“Thanks for that Jason and congratulations on the win. Back to you Doug.”
Doug Collins thanked Cheryl and continued, “107 to 101 here in Seattle. The Stealth enjoy a thrilling come from behind win here tonight with Andrew Bogut scoring a career high 30 points. Rashad McCants was the high man with 34 for Minnesota and it’s so long from everyone here at TNT. I’m Doug Collins accompanied by Reggie Miller and Cheryl Miller. Stay tuned because coming up next are Ernie Johnson, Kenny ‘The Jet’ Smith, Charles Barkley, and Chris Webber on Inside the NBA.”
