Lakers Prevail in OT as Artest hits buzzer beater



Los Angeles, CA - Ron Artest was just 6 for 22 from the field and 3 for 7 from trey on Wednesday night, but he hit the biggest shot of the night for the Lakers as time expired in overtime at Staples Center.

With his defender Luol Deng helping off to guard Kobe Bryant in the waning moments of the game, Artest popped open on the perimeter and upon reciving the pass from Bryant, let it fire as the buzzer sounded. The next set of sounds would include a smooth swish, and the roaring of the LA crowd as the Lakers pull out a 98-95 win over the visiting Chicago Bulls in overtime.

Kobe led the Lakers with 38 points on 14 for 33 shooting as he outplayed the Bulls superstar counterpart Dwyane Wade in his 38 minutes of play, making outstanding shots on the offensive end and holding Wade to just 26 points on 9 for 27 shooting on the defensive end of the floor.

"He was all over me and tonight was just not my night" said Wade "It's tough, but it happens"

Artest finished with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Derek Fisher, who sank a jumper with 3.8 seconds remaining in regulation to send it into overtime, had 16 points and a team high 7 assists.

Gasol had 8 points and 15 boards while Lamar Odom finished with 8 points and 11 rebounds coming off the bench.

However, even the talented Lakers frontcourt had problems with Joakim Noah on Wednesday night, who dominated the boards with 19 rebounds to go along with his 14 points and 2 blocks. Noah got Andrew Bynum into foul trouble early and the rising talent in LA ended up only playing 16 minutes.

Chicago was led mostly by the efforts of Derrick Rose, who, in 39 minutes of play, had 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists on 10 for 22 shooting; however, Rose also had 4 turnovers, a big factor in the Bulls' loss.

The Bulls had 18 turnovers and just 15 assists, as opposed to the Lakers' 6-26 turnover-assist ratio. The Lakers had an astonishing 108 field goal attempts as a result of that. Had they made more then 36% of those, the score would not have been so close.

"We matched evenly on the glass, so it was the problem with all our turnovers" said Bulls head coach Vinny Del Negro "The shot from Artest was unfortunate, but we put ourselves in those positions with our sloppy offensive execution"

Chicago actually dominated on the defensive end, with Josh Smith leading the way with his 6 blocks. The Bulls had 13 in total while the Lakers only had 1 rejections. On offense, they did shoot 43% but as previously stated, the turnovers granted LA more chances and hence, a higher opportunity for victory.

The Bulls are now 23-16 and are currently second place in the Eastern Conference Standings behind the Charlotte Bobcats.

Durant, Thunder Escapes with victory in Defensive Showdown



Oklahoma City, OK - The extremely low final score of 72-70 normally wouldn't suggest a well played and exciting game. Closely contested maybe, but not exciting.

That didn't apply last night when the Bulls came into town.

As two of the best defensive teams in the league square off for their final regular season matchup, both teams played spectularly on the defensive end and played playoff basketball for the whole 40 minutes of the game. The final score, although low, was not a result of bad offense, but simply due to better defense played by both sides.

"The intensity and atmosphere was great" said Scott Brooks, coach of the Thunder "It was a great game, fortunately we got the win, but it could have gone either way"

Chicago shot 29/83 from the field while the Thunder went 28/83, but had 4 more free throws (12/15) attempted and 3 more made than the Bulls, who got to the line only 11 times and hit 9/11 from the charity stripe.

The Thunder also made and attempted more three pointers than the Bulls and had a better assist to turnover ratio.

Jeff Green led the game in scoring with 20 points, he also had 7 rebounds but the player of the game honors went to Kevin Durant, who ended the game with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists, including 2 free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining to clinch the victory for Oklahoma City.

James Harden had 19 points while Westbrook finished with 8 points and 6 dimes. David Lee had 10 rebounds.

For the Bulls, Dwyane Wade led the way with 19 points, but had to take 28 shots in order to do so as he was hounded by the lanky Durant all game long.
Derrick Rose chipped in 14 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds while Joakim Noah had another big double double in the loss, tallying 11 points and a game high 15 rebounds.

Chicago had one last chance, but Kyle Korver missed a contested 3 pointer at the buzzer. He had 6 points in 5 minutes coming off the bench.

The Bulls are now 3-3 in their 7 game west-coast road trip and will wrap things up tomorrow night in Houston, Texas as they face off against Yao Ming and the Houston Rockets.

Awesome game winner from Brad in San Antonio. Tough losses against Oklahoma City though. Durant played terribly in the second meeting, and it's too bad that you couldn't take advantage of that.
