Warriors Continue Hot Start, Down Spurs

Nov 1, 2010 San Antonio, TX -- The upstart Golden State Warriors took down yet another Western Conference powerhouse by defeating the San Antonio Spurs 110-107 in their first road game of the young season. The Warriors have opened 2010 a perfect 3-0 continuing their best regular season start since '94-95.

The Spurs could not contain the Warriors' scorching hot marksman Kevin Martin who drained shots, contested and uncontested, throughout the night on his way to a team-high 28 point performance. Martin shot an efficient 61% from the field, 11-18 on the night and 5-6 from the charity stripe.

San Antonio wasn't struggling more than they were being outscored by the Warriors' quicker transition game. The Spurs trailed most of the match but impenetrable fourth-quarter defense and 8 quick points behind their leader Tim Duncan found Golden State suddenly trailing 100-102 with 1:28 remaining.



After exchanging baskets the next few possessions the Warriors were staring at a 104-107 deficit with less than a minute as San Antonio threatened to end the Warriors' win streak.

Golden State had relied on Martin's scoring offensively most of the night, but it was unsung hero Kelenna Azubuike who came through in the clutch and put the game away. Azubuike would bury a trey with a hand in his face to tie the score 107-107 with 42.7 remaining. Moments later after defensive stops on both ends of the court and with the score still tied, Azubuike would bury a second trey to give Golden State the final edge. The Spurs, with 5.4 seconds left in regulation, would launch a desperation three by Manu Ginobili but it ricocheted hard off the rim.



"The first (three-pointer), I had Manu (Ginobili) draped all over me but still managed to get a clean look," said a confident Azubuike. "The second, time was winding down and Steph (Curry) had pulled some defenders and found me at the top of the arc. I was a little further out then usual but caught it in rhythm and didn't think about it; I just let it fly."

Azubuike finished the night with 15 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals including the two clutch end-game treys to seal the victory. Stephen Curry had another solid game with 16 points, 3 rebounds and led Golden State with 6 assists. Veteran's Tim Duncan and Antonio McDyess led the Spurs with 23 a piece, also collecting 9 boards and 5 blocks between them.

Golden State continues on the road facing All-Star Chris Bosh plus rookie-sensation point guard and #2-overall draft pick Warren Lovelace and the Toronto Raptors, who are 2-1 on the season coming off last year's league-worst record.

I would've like to have seen Martin do a little more than just score, but he was a key part in the victory and that's all that matters. Sweet win.

Warriors Undefeated Behind Curry's Career Night

Nov 3, 2010 Toronto, Canada -- Stephen Curry had a career-high 39-point performance to lead the red-hot Warriors in a 121-102 victory over the Toronto Raptors. The win improves Golden State's record to 4-0, one game shy of matching their best regular season start since '94-95.

Curry scored 10 first-quarter points to keep Golden State in striking range when the Raptors opened with a strong 32-24 period behind the efforts of Toronto's Marco Bellinelli. Bellinelli dropping 9 points in the opening quarter and would finish with a team-high 23 points against his former team.

Tough defense and a lightning quick transition attack orchestrated by Curry opened the game up for the Warriors during the second quarter. By halftime, they would not only erase Toronto's early lead but take a 4-point edge into the second half.

During the game a heated battle of point guards developed between Curry and Raptor's rookie Warren Lovelace, Toronto's 2010 2nd-overall draft pick. Lovelace's playmaking ability was apparent as he consistently dissected the defense and found open teammates on route to a game-high 11 assists; but some rookie mistakes were also prevalent as the Warriors forced Lovelace to turn the ball over 8 times.

Both teams held even throughout the third quarter and braced for a tight finish; however Golden State made it an anticlimactic show for disappointed Raptors fans who watched the Warriors go on a 12-0 run as their team went ice cold. With Curry nailing free-throws down the stretch, the Raptors never closed within single digits of the Warriors' lead.

"Steph had a great game tonight," said head coach Don Nelson. "When he's hitting shots and still able to find open teammates, that’s probably when we're the most dangerous as a team." Curry also collected 7 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals along with his career-high 39 points.

Golden State returns home to host O.J. Mayo, Rudy Gay and the Memphis Grizzlies tomorrow night. Expect Oracle Arena to be rocking as the Warriors attempt to match their best start in 16 seasons.

Ahhh I hear ya Thierry... actually this brings me to a problem - and his name is Tolliver

Right now IRL, Anthony Tolliver is a beast (considering originally he was just a ten-day walk-on); compared to Powe, Tolliver's kickin' ass:



Now of course Tolliver IRL is getting uber playing time compared to Powe since the Warriors got like a dozen guys out for the season but I like that he's making the most of it - guys like him belong on my Warriors! But, in here he's non-existent and rated overall at 62.

Though the team is smokin' currently, I'm looking to get some insurance in the Small Forward dept so I need some input

Some options I've been contemplating:

○ re-stat Mr. T (somewhere between mid to low 70s overall) and have him compete for rotation with Randolf, Powe and Jordan; Trade Radmanovic with Wright and/or Turiaf in package for attempted SF upgrade (although I kinda want to keep Wright and see if he develops plus he adds more anorexia to my roster);

○ Re-stat Tolliver but keep roster as is for now since we're winning anyway;

○ Don't re-stat Tolliver and send him on his way in a package deal w/Radmanovic and/or other players for higher-caliber SF;

Other suggestions what to do w/Tolliver? May not happen right away, but something will be done about him

Don't do anything. Tolliver is just a product of the Warrior's up-tempo system. 62 is pretty fair. (Plus, Leon Powe is sorta coming off a torn ACL)

I agree. I've been mulling over what to do with Tolliver in the roster updates and perhaps a few of his ratings could stand to be increased, but it's easy to get too excited about a player when he has a decent stretch (especially due to an uptempo offense or a few big games filling in for someone else) and end up overrating him somewhat.

K-Mart killed you, man. How's Tolliver doing? Last night IRL against the Blazers he played really good. I can now say I'm watching NBA games every night, something I've never done before

good points guys; if Tolliver were a 'last resort' option in my dynasty much as he is IRL, he'd likely get comparable stats nightly even rated at 62... verdict is in and he stays as is (though hopefully he'll improve throughout the season via my Trainer)
