Chicago Bulls point guard Lindsey Hunter announced his retirement from the NBA today, ending his NBA career. Signed by the Bulls as a free agent to an one-year, nonguaranteed contract on November 13, 2008, Hunter averaged 2.6 points and 1.3 assists for the Bulls in his first season with the team, and on July 13, 2009, Hunter re-signed with the Bulls for the veteran minimum of $1.3 million. “This is my last season; I'm effectively retiring.” Hunter enjoyed a 17-year NBA career that saw him take the court for five different teams: Detroit Pistons (1994-2000 and 2003-2008), Milwaukee Bucks (2000-01), Los Angeles Lakers (2001-02), Toronto Raptors (2002-03) and Chicago (2008-2010). The Jackson State native leaves the NBA with career averages of 8.1 points, 2.5 assists, 1.2 steals and 2.0 rebounds while shooting 38.5 percent from the floor, 35.8 percent from three-point range and 74.9 percent from the foul line in 1006 total games in the league.

The Big Diesel, The Man Of Steel won't be dominating the paint anymore. The 38-year-old, former Magic, Lakers, Heat, Suns center Shaquille O'Neal retired today after 18 seasons and a reputation as the best center ever to play the game. He called it quits after seeing his contract with Cleveland expired, where he averaged career-lows of 9.5 points and 4.6 rebounds, but shooting a career-high 64.2 percent from the floor. The Cavaliers publicly said during the season they wouldn't resign O'Neal, a decision Shaq said he understood. “You need to do things to better the business. I know the Cavs wouldn't have the money available to give me a new contract, so I'm looking forward to continuously supporting the Cavaliers, but from more of a distance. Anyway, the truth is I can't go through the physical grind of another year. This was my final season. I couldn't retire in a better moment, giving a ring to Bron,” he said in a news conference at Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena with LeBron James and Cavs GM Danny Ferry by his side; the Cavaliers defeated the Dallas Mavericks on 7 seven games this past June to lift the Larry O'Brien trophy. LeBron and Antawn Jamison get most of the glory for bringing this NBA championship to Cleveland, this season, but Shaq gladly did the dirty work.

Detroit Pistons duo, center Ben Wallace and guard Chucky Atkins both announced their retirement from the NBA this morning at a press conference at Auburn Hills, closing the final chapter on their NBA careers. Wallace signs off a 14-year NBA career that included a NBA championship with the Pistons on 2004, four Defensive Player of the Year Awards, four All-Star selections, three All-NBA Second Team and two All-NBA Third Team spots, five All-Defensive First Team and a All-Defensive Second Team nods. “There have been so many people who have supported me through my career, from players to coaches to fans,” said Big Ben. “I appreciate all the owners, GMs, doctors, equipment managers, trainers, ballkids and staff who not only supported me, but helped propel me to the next level in my game. I do not take your love for granted. I look forward to continuing these relationships in my future basketball and business endeavors with Detroit.” Wallace, 35, finishes his career having averaged 5.8 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and 29.8 minutes per contest in 985 regular-season games with Washington, Orlando, Detroit, Chicago and Cleveland. Atkins, who originally began his career with the Orlando Magic, signed with the Pistons after that season for his first stint with the team. He later god traded to Boston, and also played with the Lakers, Washington, Memphis, Denver and Oklahoma City last year.

San Antonio Spurs guard Michael Finley has informed the media that he will retire from professional basketball today. “It is time to move on to the next stage in my life. My career has been a blessing and I am grateful to have had this experience.” Finley was signed by the Spurs for the 2005/06 season, and won an NBA championship in 2007 with the Spurs in his 12th NBA season. He was given the "game ball" by his teammates, and specifically mentioned in post-game interviews by Robert Horry and Tim Duncan. Out of the original trio from the Dallas Mavericks, he became the first to achieve a title, surpassing the 2006–07 NBA MVP Dirk Nowitzki and previous two-time MVP Steve Nash. 37 years old, 6-7, 225-pounds, Finley was selected by the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the 1995 NBA Draft. The Wisconsin native ends his NBA career with averages of 15.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 1139 career games over 15 seasons with Phoenix, Dallas and San Antonio; he had a 22.6-points, 6.3-rebounds and 5.3-assists year with the Mavericks on 1999/2000. He was acquired by Dallas on December 26, 1996, along with Sam Cassell, A. C. Green and a second-round draft pick for Jason Kidd, Tony Dumas and Loren Meyer.

Phoenix Suns forward Grant Hill announced his official retirement from the league today. A seven-time All-Star, whose career was slowed by a recurring ankle injury, is hanging 'em up. “Previously I had the desire to always play. But I don't want to live on anti-inflammatories and so forth for the rest of my life. So, I calling 'em quits.” Hill signed a seven-year, $93 million contract with the Magic in 2000, just a few months after having surgery to repair a broken left ankle. He was supposed to team with Tracy McGrady and give Orlando one of the best scoring tandems in the league, but it never quite worked out as planned as Hill played just 200 regular-season games in seven years. In his first three years in Orlando, Hill played four, 14 and 29 games before having season-ending surgery. He sat out his entire fourth season (2003-04) following a fifth ankle surgery. “I felt pretty good this past seasons with the Suns, and I'm excited for the new challenges coming in my life,” Hill added. “82 games is a long season and age has finally caught up with me. This is the right time to retire.”

Portland Trail Blazers center Marcus Camby and forward Juwan Howard both announced their retirement from the league. Camby, 6-11, 235-pounds, averaged 10.3 points and 9.7 rebounds in 839 career games. His most productive statistical season came in 2006/2007 with the Denver Nuggets, when he averaged 11.2 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.3 blocks en route to the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award. “My body has gave me all the signs. It's time to hang 'em up,” said Camby. “I’ll miss the jersey and shorts.” A 2nd-overall selection by the Toronto Raptors on the 1996 NBA Draft, Camby played for five teams in his NBA career (Toronto, New York, Denver, L.A. Clippers and Portland). Howard, less than three days after Camby announced his retirement, Howard announced he was calling it a playing career as well. Howard, whose intensity and effort this year made him a fan favorite with both Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla injured, played in 1043 games over 15 seasons, averaging 14.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, including a 22.1-points, 8.1-rebounds, 4.4-assists year with Washington on 1995/96. “My days on the court as an NBA player are over, but I am looking forward to continuing all my offcourt work and keeping a promise to the kids of Portland,” Howard said. Howard met with Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard and the two discussed options for the veteran forward to keep him involved with the team. In addition to doing some scouting work and learning the business side of basketball, Howard will work on a broadcasting career and will also expand his community efforts and the extensive programs of his foundation.

Yeah me too. But Shaq couldn't pick a better time to retire. :cheeky: Camby played all 82 for the Blazers but was quiet.

Lol, calm down guys, it was just to add some realism... all the stats are on the player profiles on the game, just did research on their drafts and any transactions and best statistical seasons. I know Lindsey Hunter sucks

All or nothing seems to be the guideline for coaches at Detroit Pistons; bring home an NBA championship or see the door. First-year coach John Kuester became the first coach to get the axe this offseason as Pistons president for basketball operations Joe Dumars fired him today, after watching his team stumble to a 32-50 record and pick in the lottery. Last season was the first the Pistons missed the playoffs since 2000-01. In 2005, the Pistons parted ways with Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown after he helped them win a title and almost repeat during his two years with the team. Rick Carlisle was fired after two years with the Pistons following a conference finals appearance in 2003 in his second season and NBA Coach of the Year honors in his first. Flip Saunders was fired after he led the team to the Eastern Conference finals in each of his three seasons. And Michael Curry was shown the door as well, after finishing with a sub-.500 record and an embarrassing first-round exit from the playoffs. “That's part of this job,” Kuester said on NBA TV today. “When you lose, it's the coach's fault. When you win, the players get the praise. Best of luck to the Pistons for the future.” Dumars hired a rookie coach for the second time in a row, Percy Hollins, to replace Kuester.

“The defense of the team has declined. The energy and spark we had in other years just hasn't been there. We've got to get this team back to playing the way it was, and get some momentum throughout the next season and make a playoff push, hopefully,” Washington Wizards general manager Ernie Grunfeld said tonight, adding that he hopes to reach an agreement with rookie coach Brian Fisher by the end of the weekend to replace the fired Flip Saunders. Saunders led Washington to a league-worst 28-54 record last year, his first and only as the Wizards head coach. Gilbert Arenas, the only played left at D.C. of the "Big 3" (Antawn Jamison led the Cavaliers to the NBA championship over Caron Butler's Mavericks) added: “It's tough to have all the changes we've had the last couple years. Coming in, having all the young guys we had, my locker room incident, then with the trades bringing in the new guys... it's just been an up and down season. At November, starting over new again -- that's tough to deal with. I really feel sorry about how tough of a job Flip had. But that's the nature of the business.”

Denver Nuggets' George Karl, Los Angeles Clippers' Mike Dunleavy and Utah Jazz's Jerry Sloan all three announced their retirements from their NBA coaching careers this past week, with no replacements known as of today. Karl's NBA career spanned 37 years, first as a player -- five years with the ABA San Antonio Spurs -- and then as a coach, with Cleveland, Golden State, Spain's Real Madrid, Seattle, Milwaukee and the Nuggets, but after the 2010 NBA All-Star Game, It was revealed in a press conference that he was diagnosed with treatable neck and throat cancer. “My six years in Denver have been nothing but a joy. I’ve enjoyed every moment. We’ve had a lot of success. We’ve shown improvement each year, and I think for us as coaches, it was fun to be a part of that. The players were very receptive to being coached and they worked together. I’m going to miss that. We had success and we’re getting better. But health comes first. I can't thank enough all the teams that worked with me in my career.” Karl led Denver to a 48-34 record last year and a playoff berth as Western Conference's 3rd seed, defeating the Houston Rockets in the first round 4-1 but losing 4-2 to the Dallas Mavericks at the West Semifinals.

Dunleavy announced a couple of days ago that after 13 years of playing and 21 years of coaching, he has elected to retire from basketball. “I would like to thank Mike for all of his hard work and dedication this past years,” said Donald Sterling, Los Angeles Clippers owner. “He has had a terrific career and we wish him the best in his retirement.” The Clippers finished the season with a 37-45 record, 2 games behind the West's 8th seed. Dunleavy said: “It’s a pursuit. Each year is a pursuit for a championship. Every year you have optimism and you try to win a championship. Unfortunately, I’ve never won a championship, but I don’t consider that a negative because we’ve had legitimate chances both with the Lakers and Portland when I was there.”

Last but not least, Jazz GM Kevin O'Connor announced today the retirement of Sloan. “As sad as I am to know that Jerry will no longer be coaching our squad, this day is a celebration of his incredible basketball career, that spans over 45 years,” he said. “Jerry has been like a brother to me and he is the most knowledgeable basketball mind I have ever known.” An American Basketball Hall of Fame induction, Sloan is one of professional basketball's most successful coaches, placing him fourth on the list of all-time most-winning NBA coaches, and is the only coach in NBA history to record 1,000 wins with the same club. He has also coached for one team longer than anyone in NBA history. “I know when it's my time to step down and this is my time. I told Kevin about this before the playoffs and indicated that it was my time to leave the league. I don't have enough words to thank the Jazz and Bulls organization for all this wonderful coaching years.”

Jim O'Brien was fired as coach of the Indiana Pacers yesterday, ending a fraught with embarrassing episodes on and off the court, and became the third NBA coach fired in a week, following Detroit's John Kuester and Washington's Flip Saunders. O'Brien, the Pacers head coach for the last three seasons, was told of the decision by Pacers president of basketball operations Larry Bird. Bird is officially giving the start to a new process of turning around a team that never played a playoff game in O'Brien tenure: no playoff berths. “I just believe a new voice, a new coach, is necessary to change the direction of this team,” Bird said on press conference at the Conseco Fieldhouse today. The Pacers finished 35-47 last season, ending below .500, in four seasons in a row. “We don't really have a choice, that's how I see it, if we want to contend for a championship again. We thank Jim for his efforts. I had a nice conversation with him and wished him luck.”

It looks like injuries have been a factor too, as the team's best player, forward Danny Granger, missed close to 20 games, but the lack of development of some of Indiana's younger players, like guard A.J. Price, forward Josh McRoberts and center Solomon Jones, played a part as well. This season alone, O'Brien had feuds with Mike Miller and Gerald Henderson, benching both of them following their acquisitions from Washington and Charlotte, respectively. Bird wants a new coach in place by the draft in June, when the Pacers will try to get a decent rookie. Bird also added he had not yet talked to any candidates for either a coach or general manager job, but has some names in his head.

It's been a precipitous drop for Indiana. The team fell from ABA three-time champions to obscurity in their first NBA years. Players like Jermaine O'Neal, Reggie Miller, Al Harrington and Jalen Rose, coached by Bird, created a powerhouse in the East in the late 90's, as the Pacers got as far as the NBA Finals in 2000, when they waged a six-game battle with the Lakers before losing the sixth game at Los Angeles. They came having plenty of confidence in their ability to force a Game 7, and even held the lead for much of the game, but in the 4th quarter things started to fall apart as Robert Horry provided 8 quick points off the bench and the dynamic duo of Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant took over. The Lakers outscored the Pacers 37-27 in the final period and clinched their 12th NBA title, and would go on to win championships in the next two seasons to become just the fourth franchise to pull off a three-peat. But since then, Indiana has fallen back to the middle of the pack, including the brawl at Auburn Hills, and now, back to the bottom. Only time will tell if the Pacers will go back to be a force to be reckoned with.

With names like Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Patrick Ewing and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, NBA Legends have plenty of voices and on-court leaders taking places on the sidelines, coaching new potential superstars. “But when Reggie Miller talked, everyone listened,” Miller long time teammate Jermaine O'Neal said today. “He was our coach on the floor. No one who played with him would be surprised that his next step after playing would be the bench.” Former Miller rival and Pacers president of basketball operations, Bird, couldn’t agree more, and after a long and extensive search, Bird asked “Killer Miller” to kickstart his coaching career in the team of his whole life. “I'm thrilled to be joining the team of all my life as the new coach,” said Miller. “I look forward to working with Larry and the rest of the Pacers organization.” In 18 seasons with Indiana, Miller ended up as the organization's all-time leader in games played, minutes played, made field goals, attempted field goals, made 3-point field goals, attempted 3-point field goals, made free throws, attempted free throws, assists, steals, turnovers and most important, points and points per game (31.5).

Miller, 44 years old, agreed to a three-year deal worth approximately $8 million early this morning, and word leaked to the media quickly. By midday, Bird had confirmed that his close friend had been chosen over Flip Saunders and John Kuester, both fired last week, to replace Jim O'Brien. Miller will be introduced to the public at a press conference tomorrow at Conseco Fieldhouse. “We're ecstatic to have Reggie, a legend on this organization, as our new head coach. Reggie and I have had a great relationship for a long time, but he’s going to be our coach because he wanted a challenge,” Bird said. “His reputation as a player and a person is one part, and his great combination of confidence and humility is another. I couldn’t be happier with where we are today.”

There also was an immediate word on who will join Miller on his staff. It is a safe bet that it will be a combination of old O'Brien's assistant coaches, and a pearl from France. Bird also announced that French coach Thierry Tirieux joined the Pacers coaching staff as assistant coach and player development to Miller, along Dick Harter (Pennsylvania), Lester Conner (Oregon State), Dan Burke (Portland State), Frank Vogel (Kentucky) and Jay DeFruscio (Ursinus). A league source said Tirieux's contract was for two with a team option for a third year. Tirieux is considered to be one of the most european qualified basketball minds, and arrives in Indianapolis with a wealth of basketball coaching experience in Europe, having been a coach for three Euroleague teams (Greece's Panathinaikos from 2003/04 to 2004/05, Spain's DKV Joventut - Ricky Rubio's former team - from 2004/05 to 2006/07, and France's ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne, from 2006/07 to 2008/09 - last season winning the LNB Pro A trophy as co-coach with Vincent Collet), all making at least the quarter-finals of the Euroleague on the seasons he was coaching, and getting public acclaim from top NBA coaches such as Charlotte Bobcats' Larry Brown, San Antonio Spurs' Gregg Popovich and Los Angeles Lakers' Phil Jackson.

“We are very excited to add Thierry to our staff,” said Bird. “He brings a different head coaching experience to the league as he has at least five years in Europe.” Tirieux will also be writing a blog for Pacers.com. In press conference, he said, “"This is a dream come true for me. I've always had a great deal of respect for coaching and have spent my whole life around coaches and the game of basketball. I’m really excited about the talent Mr. Larry Bird and now Reggie Miller have put together and cannot wait to get started working with this world-class players. I can’t thank the Pacers organization enough for giving me this opportunity. I am very excited to come to this great organization and I look forward to working with Reggie and all this wonderful Pacers team, and also to be blogging from behind the scenes.” In his role, Tirieux will assist the coaching staff with practice preparation and individual player development.

Sweet dude. (Y) I like Reggie coaching the team, and of course yourself assisting him. You should have really had yourself as the head coach, Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Fratello as assistant coaches, and Reggie Miller as the shooting coach though.

In other news, Pacers President of Basketball Operations Larry Bird announced today that Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Mike Miller, Luther Head and Earl Watson have all decided to test the free agency pool and will not be-resigned by the team. Per club policy, no terms will be disclosed with the media, but with this decision the team has more than $21 million in cap space.

“Getting cap space this coming free agency period was always our top priority,” said Bird. “After weighing all of the options and after conversations with Zydrunas, Mike, Luther and Earl, we believe this is the best solution for this team. We know and appreciate the many contributions all of them made during the past season, and we wish him nothing but the best to all four of them.”

The 2010 NBA Draft Lottery brings us to one of the more interesting and debated aspects of the NBA Draft. Fourteen teams vie for the No. 1 pick in the draft based on the NBA's complicated lottery process. The lottery was originally developed to help the NBA's worst teams rebuild by having the highest pick in the draft, but many times, the results haven't had exactly that effect. Since 1990, only four teams with the worst record have won the lottery: the Orlando Magic (2004), the Cleveland Cavaliers (2003), the Philadelphia 76ers (1996) and the New Jersey Nets (1990). The team with the second-best probability of winning the lottery has fared even worse, winning the lottery just twice: the Magic (1992) and the San Antonio Spurs (1997).

Also, the lottery can change the course of a franchise. In 1992, the big prize was Shaquille O'Neal, and the Magic walked away with the Diesel even though the Timberwolves had the best chance of getting the first pick. How many championships would the Wolves have won with Shaq anchoring the paint? In 1997, another amazing center, Tim Duncan, was the consensus No. 1 pick. And while the Celtics had the best chance of winning the lottery, the Spurs got the lucky bounce that would bring them four championships. Meanwhile, Celtics fans are still mourning over the big guy that got away.

Last year's lottery had some nice prizes like Blake Griffin, Tyreke Evans and Ricky Rubio. The Sacramento Kings, who finished that season with the league's worst record (17-65), had 250 combinations assigned while the Phoenix Suns, the best team in the lottery at 46-36, had five combinations out of 1,000, but it was the Clippers, who had a 17.7% percent of getting the top pick -- selecting Griffin -- , and the Memphis Grizzlies, who had just a 8.33% percent chance of getting the second pick -- picking Hasheem Thabeet -- , who took home the first and second picks. Sacramento ended up with the fourth pick and selected Evans, who took home Rookie of the Year honors last season. This year, there are some great prizes again -- Kentucky guard John Wall, Ohio State guard Evan Turner and Georgia Tech forward Derrick Favors.

As for the Pacers, who have never won the lottery, if anyone deserves a break from the pingpong balls, it's them. Since the Ron Artest brawl, the franchise has been snakebit. A top-three pick could catapult Indiana back into the mix in the East.

The coach is a huge part of a franchise success, but Reggie needs a new squad if he wants to contend. Me and Bird will get him some huge names in the FA pool. :cheeky: Keep watching.

A little more than $21 million. I can sign a big name (Bron, Wade and Bosh all declined their options) and some other scrubs.

Look for the lottery results and a quick mock draft tomorrow. Anyone wants to be included in the draft? Just say Yes here (I have some like Sit, Martti, hova, Lamrock, dare and some others) or send me your info:
