2009/10 Boston Celtics Season Preview.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Apologies for telling you what you already know, but the story is the same now as it was on May. Even the opening pangs of training camp haven't changed a thing -- Boston's fortunes ride entirely on Kevin Garnett being healthy. This isn't anything new, nor is it particularly revelatory, especially when you consider that teams 1-30 generally kind of tend to perform as well as their best player is performing. Yet Garnett's a special case. For one, his injury isn't a typical basketball-styled malady. Apparently his tendons had to be stapled back onto his right knee.

Additionally, because Garnett is such a unique player, there's no real telling from game to game just what his teammates need to do in his absence, should there be an absence to make up for. Because he does so much defensively to disrupt a game, alongside the usual all-world stat lines, it's not as simple as looking to run more for Paul Pierce, or letting Rajon Rondo dominate the ball a bit more. Let's deal with the half-full approach. This Celtics team is quite talented, there's a blind dedication to winning from the top on down, and obviously have what it takes to get back to that peak. The team is too good.

Rondo's 23. That's young, and he was a borderline All-Star last year. I don't read too much into his white-hot, first-round stats from the playoffs last spring (19.4 points, 11.6 assists, 9.3 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game is nothing to sneeze at), but Rondo has a great chance to become the fifth All-Star on Boston's roster. That's up to him, and on a team with this much peer pressure, I don't expect Rondo to fall backward like he did for some stretches last season. Rasheed Wallace and Ray Allen are two former All-Stars and both can play (when Sheed's head is straight and Ray's ankles are in place). Rasheed can't replace what Garnett brings at all angles if the former Timberwolf were to step aside, but he's just about the closest thing there is to that. Ray's 34, but that jumper's not going anywhere.

Kendrick Perkins, assuming he continues to stay in shape, will continue to improve. He's not even 25 yet, and if he is the weak link in your starting lineup, then you're doing pretty well. Depth? Not great. Wallace helps a ton, Marquis Daniels can really play (there's misgivings about his ability as a reserve point man, but he can help this team if the motivation is there), Glen Davis can score, Eddie House can shoot, but... Shelden Williams can sop up minutes and Brian Scalabrine is still on the team. Could be a lot worse.

The rock here is Pierce. He put the Celtics on his back to lead them into the playoffs with Garnett on the pine last year, he carried the team for years with no help, and though he might level off a bit in his 12th season, he should be there again in 2009-10. No matter what's falling or rising around him. Points, points in the fourth quarter, helping the team toward the win. And the team will win. Hope this doesn't come off as flip, but the team is just going to have to try and make it to the playoffs with tendons intact. This group is made for the postseason, and the trick is going to be getting there with everyone on board this time around. You already knew that. Let's see what happens.

Prediction: 59-23

• There are plenty of uncertainties surrounding the future of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics as they're currently constructed, and after discouraging playoff exits for both teams, the pressure to win now has only increased. Cleveland and Boston were the top two seeds in the Eastern Conference last season, and considering they had represented the East in the past two NBA Finals, but both teams were ousted by Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic. Paul Pierce and the Celtics have held Cavs' LeBron James to 40.0 percent shooting in 14 combined regular-season and playoff games the past two seasons, but James has averaged 30.3 points on 45.1 percent shooting in his past seven games against the Celtics at Quicken Loans Arena, while Pierce has been held to 14.7 points while shooting 34.3 percent. The Cavaliers have won 11 straight at home over Boston by an average of 12.8 points, with their last loss coming in overtime on Dec. 18, 2004. Overall, the home team has won 16 consecutive games in the series.

Image
• An injured Kevin Garnett could only watch from the sidelines when Boston was knocked out of the playoffs on its home court last May. Garnett and the Celtics hope for a much better ending in their home opener Wednesday night when they take on the Charlotte Bobcats. Garnett missed 22 of the final 26 regular-season games, then sat out the playoffs as Boston failed to defend its 2007-08 championship. Charlotte won a franchise-record 35 games last season, but still missed the playoffs. As the Bobcats try to earn a playoff berth for the first time in franchise history, coach Larry Brown will be looking for Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson to take the scoring load. Boston won two of three against Charlotte last season, but two of the games went to overtime, including one in double OT, and the one that ended in regulation was decided by five points. The Celtics have won seven of nine at home against the Bobcats.

Image
• The Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls met in an epic first-round playoff series last season. The dramatic seven-game showdown had almost everything, except for KG. The Celtics and Bulls are set to square off for the first time since last season's playoffs Friday night in Boston, but this meeting could have a different feel with a healthy Garnett on the court. In one of the most exciting playoff series in NBA history, Boston finally eliminated Chicago on seven games as the seventh-seeded Bulls gave the defending champions all they could handle with a league-record four games going into overtime. The teams played a total of seven overtimes in those contests, also an NBA record. While Derrick Rose will direct the offense this season, the Bulls need somebody to shoulder the scoring load after Ben Gordon signed a free-agent contract with Detroit in the offseason. The guard from Memphis hopes to show once again some of the explosiveness that carried him to the Rookie of the Year award last year.

Bets:
Paul Pierce: 20+ PPG on the week :: 1.5/1
    Kevin Garnett: Double-double against Cleveland :: 2.5/1
Ray Allen: Double figures against Charlotte :: 2/1
Rajon Rondo: 10+ assists against Chicago :: 1.5/1

As I did with my 1 game story fiasco with Washington, you all start with 500 coins. Hope I get more feedback with this... You can also bet against these scenarios, for example "150 coins on Garnett not posting a double-double against Cleveland".

Thanks guys. Hope I can get to January, at least.

24 hours until the week recap. Already played the games (against Charlotte, simmed the other two), so, go and bet! If I get to the offseason, hope I don't kill myself here, the leaderboard at the end of the season will be your virtual players draft order.

It has something to do with 2k official updates? I could never login from my 2k10, so, I don't know what's the deal with Player Roles.

Celtics appoint new Assistant Coach
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

BOSTON, October 26th -- Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge announced today that French coach Thierry Tirieux has joined the Celtics coaching staff, along head coach Doc Rivers and Armond Hill, Kevin Eastman, Clifford Ray, Tom Thibodeau and Mike Longabardi, as the newest assistant coach of the team.

A league source said the contract was for two with a team option for a third year. Boston zeroed in on Tirieux this morning. Tirieux is considered to be one of the most qualified basketball minds in Europe, having been a coach for three Euroleague teams (Greece's Panathinaikos from 2003/04 to 2004/05, Spain's DKV Joventut - Ricky Rubio's former team - from 2004/05 to 2006/07, and France's ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne, from 2006/07 to 2008/09 - last season winning the LNB Pro A trophy as co-coach with Vincent Collet), all making at least the quarter-finals of the Euroleague on the seasons he was coaching, and getting public acclaim from top NBA coaches such as Charlotte Bobcats' Larry Brown, San Antonio Spurs' Gregg Popovich and Los Angeles Lakers' Phil Jackson.

“We are very excited to add Thierry to our staff”, said Rivers. “He brings a different head coaching experience to the league as he has at least five years in Europe.” Tirieux will also be writing a blog twice per month to all the Celtics fans. In press conference, he said, “I am very excited to come to this great organization. I look forward to working with Doc and all this wonderful Celtics team and also to be blogging from behind the scenes.”
