Chapter 32

Reshawn Tyson was tired. He had not felt this way in a long time. His layoff from basketball, due to a strained groin injury, was every bit disruptive but it did give him time to relax and reflect. Tyson had spent time at the hospital where his girlfriend was still in a coma. He also went to visit the graves of his mother and brother. He spent countless hours in rehab with the Seattle team trainer who was assigned to him but also spent time visiting places from his childhood. Tyson then came to realize that he was wasting his life away by dwelling on the past. Despite the fact that everyone who knew of his problems told him that everyday, he had to realize it himself.
Ty called his college coach, Roy Williams, “Sir, I finally have it all figured out.”
After a short chat with Williams, the Tar Heels coach convinced Ty to go back to Seattle when he was recovered.
“Everyone has problems son,” Williams said, “It’s how you solve them that matters. Go back to Seattle and practice with the team. Get your mind off of things.”
Ty loved basketball as much as all of the people he had lost in the past. He came to the realization that no one could help him battle his depression but himself. One way to relieve the stress and negative feelings was to play basketball. With a renewed vigor, Tyson returned to Seattle. Although, he didn’t see a future on the Seattle Stealth basketball team for as long as Durant was around; Ty decided on one thing. He did not want to be pushed around anymore. Ty had become upset because he wasn’t accepted by some of the players. He had moved on from this. Ty was stronger. I should be a star on this team, that’s why they picked me, Ty thought to himself. Ty was going to come back and reclaim his spot on the team. That was why he had returned to Seattle to rejoin the team just before they finished off the Clippers in the first round. I may not play this season but I will be ready for next season, Ty said in his mind.
Ty looked around and smiled; he loved the feeling of the sweat dripping down his forehead. He loved the pain in his calves after another taxing training session. He loved the love shown for him from his best friend Rocky Akonnor as well as team mates who were excited to see him back like DJ White, Chris Wilcox, Trevor Ariza, Sebastian Telfair, and David Lee. He also loved the guidance shown to him by captain Jason Kidd. Training was about to end and the players were stretching to warm down. George Karl called everyone over to discuss the game for the next night. He made the shocking call to a stunned Stealth team.
Karl announced, “Tyson. You’re starting at the two.”

The bombshell had been dropped and George Karl looked around in a bit of insecurity. He was catching some icy glares from a few of the players, namely Raja Bell, Andrew Bogut, and Kevin Durant. Trevor Ariza didn’t look too thrilled either as he thought he had the starting spot down pat.
“We’re going with Bogut, Wilcox, Durant, Tyson, and Kidd. We’ve got to win this game tomorrow or we’re pretty much gone for the series. This Portland team is outstanding and we don’t want to be down 0 games to 3,” Karl explained, “Pull your heads in boys and bring out your best tomorrow night! Go home and get some rest.”
Karl and his staff hung around after training to check out some more video of both teams. Ty was congratulated by some of the guys while Durant was fuming. He walked over to Ty.
“I thought your season was over!”
Ty ignored him.
Durant taunted him, “You’re a drama queen acting like you’re all that but you’re not. Tell coach you ain’t ready to play. You’re going to lose us the game if you play!”
Ty shoved Durant back, “I’ve had enough of your shit man. Back off.”
Durant was fuming and grabbed the neck of Ty’s jersey, “You want to say that again?”
“Yeah, back off,” Ty shouted, “You got a problem with that?”
Akonnor yelled, “Let go of him!”
Durant let go of Ty and walked away. Akonnor asked if Ty was ok and the two of them left the court to hit the showers. Karl and the staff had seen everything but did not say anything.

It was game day and after shoot around, an angry Durant called a team meeting. Everyone from the team was present as they sat around the table. Durant and Kidd were sitting at the head of the table. Rasheed Wallace was sitting nearby and watched his team mates fill the room.
“So what are we here for?” Sheed asked aloud, “Are we going to talk about our jerseys? Because they are really crap jerseys. The grey ones look like shit and smell like it too. Hey Bassy, don’t you agree?”
Telfair looked away as some of the other guys chuckled.
“Funny how the grey jerseys look and smell like shit,” Sheed continued to ramble on, “And the purple ones, boy oh boy, why don’t we just wear pink, we’re already halfway to queer with the purple ones.”
“Anyone told you that you smell like shit today?” Chris Wilcox asked.
“You been smoking on that reefer again Sheed?” David Lee called out.
The whole room burst into laughter as Sheed yelled back, “Hey! Don’t hate on Mr Top 50! When my back is good, I’m going to dunk on your skinny white ass!”
Everyone was there and Durant briefed everyone, “So I called this meeting today to discuss the game later. Tyson should not be starting.”
Bogut butted in, “I agree.”
“We need to discuss who we think deserves to start. I personally think coach has it all wrong and Raja should start the game,” Durant finished.
The room was silent; so silent you could hear a pin drop. Sheed had a drink of some water from a cup then filled his mouth with the rest of what was left. He pulled his head back, then started to gargle loudly.
“Cut it out!” Wilcox elbowed him.
Sheed nearly choked but quickly swallowed the water down. He looked around the table and flashed everyone the widest grin he could muster.
Ty spoke up, “Look, I know that I have been away for a long time but I believe I have what it takes to help us get back into this series.”
Bell yelled, “Shut up rookie!”
Ty took offence, “Hey, you’re getting old. And it’s showing, I’m not a rookie anymore old man.”
“No, I told you to shut up!” Bell yelled even louder this time.
Ty laughed, “Go play with your girlfriend Steve Nash.”
Bell leapt up and across the table at Ty. Bell was restrained by Bogut and Ariza.
“Come on, take a punch!” Ty taunted Bell.
Durant then gladly accepted the challenge and lunged at Ty, tackling him to the ground. Only seconds passed before it was pure chaos in the room with players from both sides of the table going at each other. Two of the coaching staff ran in and blew their whistles.
“Break it up! Break it up!” one of them yelled.
The other was shouting, “This is despicable! How old are you guys?”
“Get back here jerk!” Akonnor was chasing after Durant.
“Don’t touch him!” Bogut was following after them.
Bassy was hiding underneath the table; he knew he was never going to stand any chance in a fight. The only chance he stood was that he would be the first one knocked out. Bell and Ty were being held back from each other as the two of them swore profusely at each other. Kidd had run out to call for security. Whilst the fists were flying, Sheed had crawled out of the room and into the hallway. He sat against the wall and smiled, pulling out a small flask and then took a swig. Good old Hennessey, Sheed was drunk.

Karl had gotten word of the team meeting between his players and how it had gotten ugly. He didn’t need the drama right now, not before the most important game of the season so far. His players were out on the floor shooting around and warming up for Game 3. Karl looked around the empty change room; well, it was nearly empty bar Sheed sleeping in the corner. Karl took his whiteboard and walked out to join his team. The arena was buzzing with anticipation. One pocket of fans was chanting, “My team, my team, my team.” Durant waved to the fans in the crowd to show his appreciation before showing off a tomahawk jam. The fans for even louder as others joined in with the chant. Karl sat down on the bench next to Ty. It would soon be game time.

Louis Nixon: Always Motivated, Always Gunning
Warrior and Sixth Man of the Year, Can’t Be Stopped

May 5, 2011

Image
By Woody Hannes
ESPN.com Writer

The Golden State Warriors have a 2-0 lead against the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round. The Warriors are the seventh seed in the Western Conference. They have a terrific All-Star in Monta Ellis but the rest of the roster isn’t that flash. Everyone is pretty solid but on paper; not good enough to take out the Denver Nuggets like they did in the first round. So what happened? Louis Nixon happened…

When the Golden State Warriors picked up Louis Nixon with the 12th pick of the 2010 NBA Draft, they already had plans of grooming him to be Monta Ellis’ backup. It was only a month into the NBA season that they realized they had drafted a steal. The 6’2” 199 lbs PG from Vandebilt, overlooked by 10 other NBA teams in the lottery (New Jersey had two picks), went on to win Sixth Man of the Year honors. The Warriors made it to the postseason.

Nixon was highly touted after an outstanding freshman campaign and was slated as the third best PG prospect for the 2009 NBA Draft behind the Nets’ Barney Steele and Mavs’ Stanley Mayo. Nixon led the Commodores in scoring (13.6) as well as assists (4.3) that year and led them to a surprise Sweet Sixteen berth. As a result, he was named to the All-SEC Freshmen team for 2009. Despite his rapid rise to national media attention, Nixon opted to stay for his sophomore year with Vandebilt.

Nixon managed to up his scoring average to 16.3 as well as lead the team in assists (4.8) and steals (1.7) but his team did worse than the previous season. Vandebilt only made it to the NIT and were knocked out in the first round. Nixon’s stock weren’t looking good as other prospects cropped up and pushed Nixon out of the picture as the best PG prospect. Chris Hova was leading Alba Berlin, Ray Lliach led the Huskies to an NCAA title, and Aaron Karl was having a fine individual season at Rhode Island.

Nixon worked hard at workouts with NBA teams and showed off his scoring ability and ball handling. That was when the Warriors fell in love with him as they loved his ability to play in the open court. Golden State was sure that Nixon was a sleeper and picked him ahead of where he was supposed to be picked; late in the first round. The team can look back and appreciate the risk they took on him. And the fact that it worked out.

Nixon was brilliant as he averaged 11.0 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 6.1 apg for the regular season. His solid play during the season came in just 22.4 minutes each night. That calculates to 20 points and 11 assists if he were to play 40 minutes; numbers close to the guy he is backing up. Nixon stepped up in the playoffs, averaging 13.8 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 5.5 apg in just 21.6 mpg. That’s 25.5 points, 10 assists per 40 minutes; numbers that just jump out at you. The kid is efficient and he’s still finishing his rookie season.

Nixon has scored in double digits in 5 of his 8 playoff games. He scored 15 points in 19 minutes in Game 2 against the Los Angeles Lakers yesterday. Nixon burned the Nuggets with 27 in 24 in Game 4 of their first round series. And the super sub also sets his teammates up as he has recorded 5+ assists in 5 of his 8 games also. He had 8 dimes in Game 1 against the Nuggets, 11 in Game 2 against the Nuggets, and 8 in Game 6 against the Nuggets.

“He does a little bit of everything,” Don Nelson stated, “It’s a luxury to have him on the bench.” The veteran coach has also hinted at starting Nixon alongside Ellis and the best part is that he would be the only coach in the NBA crazy enough to try that. However, right now the Warriors are winning and even Nelson knows not to screw around with a winning team.

Nixon understands it too, “We’re winning and if I am doing my job, I will keep doing it. I don’t need to start to help my team win games.” When Nixon joined the Warriors, the last thing he thought would happen was that he would get game time. He even remembers when he called up the Washington Wizards’ Gilbert Arenas for advice, “Gilbert is a friend of a friend. I called him to ask about what it was like to be starting from the wrong side of a team’s rotation and what it took to get to be an important piece of the puzzle. He gave some great advice and I am just so lucky that I even get a chance to play.”

The rookie has been playing on a twisted ankle for the series against the Lakers and after scoring 15 in Game 2, the Lakers’ Jordan Farmar refused to believe that Nixon was playing hurt. “He was all over the place,” Farmar was in disbelief, “No way he was hurt.”

Even when he is injured, Louis Nixon is always motivated and always gunning.
