It was clean I'm sure, but it was still a pretty bad defensive play when you know that the refs aren't going to call anything and risk leaving Kobe Bryant of all people open.
Sat Jan 02, 2010 4:47 pm
OK, for those who want it, I've found it.
Pretty good quality too, I might add.
It's amazing he didn't step out of bounds. It really look like his left foot was on the out of bound line. I don't know if the refs check that or not because they seemed to be only checking if Kobe released the shot before the buzzer.
Sat Jan 02, 2010 5:21 pm
Are they allowed to check whether he's in or not?
Sat Jan 02, 2010 5:27 pm
I think they are. The instant replay policy allows them to check whether someone's foot/feet was on the line or not when shooting a three pointer, so the same should be allowed for checking whether someone was out of bounds or not. I'm not 100% sure though.

They are, but I don't think there's any doubt that he was in bounds on that one. Clean and clearly before the buzzer, the review was strictly formality.
Great shot by Kobe as the Lakers once ago demonstrate that great teams that don't quit are seldom out of the game until too much time has slipped away. However, the Lakers have had to rely heavily on Kobe's heroics to eke out wins over some vastly inferior teams in recent weeks. It isn't cause for immediate alarm, every elite team/defending champion/eventual champion has and will continue to have games like that in any given season, but all the same if it continues I wonder if they'll have enough steam come Playoff time.

It was obviously a push-off by Kobe but that is what you expect to create separation. In those situations, defenders are holding anyways. Rodriguez got caught on the wrong side of Kobe & the basket. I don't know what he was thinking.
Sat Jan 02, 2010 8:13 pm
It was? Looks to me more like Kobe ran into the defender and the defender flopped. There doesn't appear to be too much arm extension on Kobe's part.
And having just watched the game in HD, it's pretty clear his heel was off the ground and as such he was in bounds.

Actually, you are right after taking a closer look at it. It was move like an illegal moving screen to get his teammate free, but it didn't look intentional so no foul is going to be called unless it was at the other end of the court against Kobe.
Sat Jan 02, 2010 8:35 pm
No foul on Kobe's push but his foot seems to step on the line, I think that Lakers got away with this win again.
Sat Jan 02, 2010 9:46 pm
I don't know, he comes close but I think he was in bounds when he caught the ball. As for the Kings being called the Queens in the video Pat posted, isn't that as passe as the folks who call the Lakers the Fakers or Rapers? It's a new decade, surely it's time for new insulting nicknames.

Shame Kings didn't have Tyreke Evans playing, otherwise Lakers would've lost again.

His heel is over the line, but it's not touching the ground. Given that it's so hard to tell I think we give the benefit of the doubt to the referees, who both had far clearer views than any offered from any of the video replays.
EDIT: And what's up with Stu Lantz? "No he's not." No-selling your own superstar

Kobe was that open? Out of bounds or not the Kings deserved to lose that one. You don't leave a player of Kobe's caliber to be that open.

Kobe has hit quite a few buzzer beaters in the past 4 weeks or so. I was happy about that. Not happy that we nearly lost to Sacramento.

dejavu... Kobe has become a clutch monster this season.

or his shots are just falling now... the real clutch monster on the Lakers is Fish.

Why is Odom not getting any credit for this, anyway? Sure, Kobe hit the winner, but Lamar was the one hitting all the shots to actually get the Lakers in range to let Kobe do his thing.

Cause Odom is often unappreciated when he has his 1 in 4 awesome game.
Sun Jan 03, 2010 1:47 am
Don't forget it's still Kobe who hit jumpers after jumpers in the fourth quarter to keep the Lakers in the game when the Kings were responding to every shot the Lakers made.
Sun Jan 03, 2010 2:07 am
Sure, but they wouldn't have been close enough for that without Odom's contribution.
Sun Jan 03, 2010 2:23 am
Speaking of which, the Lakers shouldn't be trailing in the first place, no?
Sun Jan 03, 2010 2:48 am
That's not really relevant to the discussion, since it's fairly obvious and the fault of nobody more than anybody else.

We still have another year to go before the new decade. Unless 0 is the new 1. But we have a year to come up with new ones.

0 certainly isn't a 10.
