Clippers Edged Out In Home Opener, Despite Baron's Big Game
Pistons 114, Clippers 109
November 9, 2009 - Another day, another loss. While the loss wasn't nearly as bad as the fiasco of a season opener, it is still disheartening to lose the first home game to a team that I can already tell is going to suck. The Pistons, fresh off the puzzling signings of Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon came into the Staples Center and played like shit. Because they were playing LA's other team, they got the win anyway.
The Charlie V acquisition looked solid in the first quarter though. Old man Marcus Camby did a great job crashing the boards, grabbing 6 in the first period, but failed to contain the soft forward. A pair of threes by Eric Gordon and (my man) Rasual Butler kept the game from getting out of hand. In the second quarter, we saw more lapses in the Pistons' once prestigious defense. Super sixth man Butler had a party out there (according to Kenny Smith at least), but Rodney Stuckey dominated the small, untalented Sebastian Telfair, helping Detroit to a 61-52 halftime lead.
Baron Davis came out of intermission firing on all cylinders. He and Chris Kaman formed a dynamic duo in the third period, with Kaman scoring reliably in the post, and Davis playing like Steve Nash. Their solid play did not go unrewarded, as we cut the lead to three. Then, for some reason, our pathetic excuse for a coach decided to finish the quarter with a frontcourt tandem of Craig Smith and Al Thornton. Long story short, we entered the fourth down 10 points.
A pair of treys by Tayshaun Prince made the game look almost out of reach early in the fourth. Rasual Butler (who happens to be third in the NBA in both PER and true shooting percentage) led an 11-2 run to narrow the gap a bit. Dunleavy wisely went with Baron, Eric Gordon, Butler, Camby and Kaman for the final minutes of the game. Richard Hamilton's hot shooting helped maintain the narrow Piston lead. WIth 21 seconds, Eric Gordon missed a potential game-tying three, and after a failed steal attempt, were forced to foul Hamilton with 10 seconds to go. Hamilton sunk both, then the Clippers missed a pair of treys to finish the game.
Rarely does a team shoot 52% from the field, commit just 5 turnovers and lose, but we did just that. The Detroit Pistons committed 14 turnovers and 25 fouls, but shot 59% from the field, which made all the difference. After the game, Dumbleavy said "Defense, defense, defense. That's the key." No shit, Sherlock. Despite Rasual Butler's gaudy stats, yet again outplaying Al Thornton (who had 8 points and 5 rebounds on 3-8 shooting), there has still been no announcement about a change in the starting lineup.
With the loss, the Clippers fall to 0-2. On the bright side, their average point differential improved from -28 to -16.5. Yay. In their next game, they face the (also winless) New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, concluding the three-game month. Despite Nate Robinson being benched and on the trading block, we'll probably still lose.![]()
Big Ben (of all people) dominating | Why is Baron so happy?![]()
Detroit limited Rasual Butler to just 27 points | Hamilton killed off the Clippers at the line(1-0) 28 33 27 26 114
(0-2) 22 30 26 31 109
JORDAN Player Of The Game: Charlie Villanueva (Pistons): 24 points, 9 rebounds, 9-13 FG (35 minutes)
He may not have eyebrows, but he sure does have game. While Detroit's other offseason addition (Ben Gordon) had just 8 points on 3-9 shooting, Charlie Villanueva dominated on offense, and was a major reason for the Pistons' first half lead. Former defensive player of the year Marcus Camby failed to keep him in check, and was himself limited to 4 points on 1-7 from the field (though to be fair, Camby did have 13 boards).MCDWYANE Shitass Of The Game: Sebastian Telfair (Clippers): 2 points, 3 assists, 2 turnovers, 1-6 FG (11 minutes)
Sebastian Telfair was given a solid chance in the first half, playing most of the second quarter. Dumbleavy would come to regret this as Telfair played like shit, being a liability on both ends of the floor. Bassy posted a -13 in his time on the court, and Baron would play the entire second half.
Other Noteworthy Performances
Rodney Stuckey: 19 points, 8 assists, 4 rebounds (33 minutes)
Ben Wallace: 12 points, 10 rebounds (27 minutes)
Richard Hamilton: 20 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals (38 minutes)
Tayshaun Prince: 17 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3-4 3pt (35 minutes)
Baron Davis: 24 points, 12 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals (39 minutes)
Rasual Butler: 27 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 10-14 FG (30 minutes)
Chris Kaman: 18 points, 8 rebounds, 4 blocks, 8-12 FG (37 minutes)
Eric Gordon: 22 points, 3 assists, 8-19 FG (36 minutes)

Lamrock wrote:Hope everyone's enjoying this. Contrary to The X's belief, I think it is very possible to play an entire 29 game season... At least if you have the proper time on your hands. At least for now, that's what I plan on doing. Hopefully the amount of player stats I include in each recap is satisfactory. I'll post player averages every month as well.
This needs a catchy name.

Clippers Overcome Pathetic First Quarter, Edge Knicks For First Win
Clippers 114, Knicks 107
November 12, 2009 - Thanks to a 51-41 edge in both field goal percentage and rebounding, the Clippers overcame butterfingers and an awful first quarter to defeat the Knicks. The win prevents us from suffering a winless November and relieves us (at least for the time being) of cellar dweller status.
At first, it looked like it could have been a very ugly game, even for our Clippers. Rookie point guard Toney Douglas looked like a certain point guard named Tony, scoring 13 points. With our offense stagnant and defense nonexistent, the Knickerbockers got off to a hot start, leading 36-20 after the first quarter. Despite shooting 1-8 to start the game, Eric Gordon played the entire first quarter.
Gordon finally got to rest in the second quarter, and the Clippers went on a 14-4 run, with leading sixth man of the year and most improved player candidate Rasual Butler scoring at will in his place. Sebastian Telfair, cousin of sensitive guy Stephon Marbury and Knicks fan, had a modest line of 4 points and 4 assists, but posted a team-high +15. This time's Dumbleavy's small-ball lineup (Telfair, Baron Davis, Butler, Al Thornton, Craig Smith) worked well. The Knicks used a scoring run late in the quarter to get the lead back to double digits, but Baron finished the quarter with an and-1, then a trey to put us within 4 at the half.
The Knicks started the second half strong, but ran into trouble when David Lee was sent to the bench with his fifth foul. The dynamic duo of Baron and Butler, along with Eric Gordon finding his stroke from behind the arc, helped us take control in the third quarter. Thanks to our best defensive stretch of the season thus far, we overcame seven third quarter turnovers to take a four point lead going into the final period.
The momentum continued into the fourth, with our lead getting as high as 11. Things were going swell until the Knicks took their final timeout with two minutes remaining. Danilo Gallinari sunk a three, then Wilson Chandler intercepted a pass followed by a dunk to put the home team within striking distance. Chris Kaman fouled out David Lee, but couldn't convert at the line. Chris Duhon converted on a three-point attempt, closing the gap to 109-107 with under a minute left. Baron drained some clock, then broke the Knicks' hearts with an alley-oop pass to Thornton. Duhon attempted to dish it to a wide-open Gallinari, but the pass was intercepted by Baron. The Clippers made 3-4 of their foul shots, and the Knicks missed all of their quick three-point attempts, as we earned our first victory 114-107.
Thanks to his sharp shooting and clutch heroics, Baron was the obvious player of the game. Rasual Butler was also very good, putting up 23, 6 and 6 on 14 shot attempts. Butler currently leads the league in PER with an amazing 32. He obviously won't keep that level of play up, but it is very encouraging. Don't know why he isn't starting though... Gallinari had a career high 25 points, but did so on as many shot attempts. With the win, the Clippers improve to 10th in the West, and become one of 17 teams to have a win this season. The game concludes the month. Our next will be on December 1, at home against the Indiana Pacers.![]()
He sucks at everything else now, but at least Marcus can still rebound | Toney Douglas scored 13 on the PaperClips in the first quarter![]()
Al Thornton actually didn't suck (too much) this game! | 6'3" Baron Davis abused D'Antoni's Knicks in the paint(1-2) 20 36 28 30 114
(0-2) 36 24 20 27 107
JORDAN Player Of The Game: Baron Davis (Clippers): 28 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, 10-15 FG (36 minutes)
Baron Davis had a dominant game, filling up the stat sheet, and scoring a season (and game) high 28 points on just 15 shots. Baron scored 17 of his 28 in the pivotal second and third quarters, and had the game-winning steal. Davis now averages a career high 59.6% from the field and 3.3 steals per game. He also leads all point guards in current all-star voting.MCDWYANE Shitass Of The Game: Larry Hughes (Knicks): 7 points, 2 rebounds, 4 turnovers, 2-10 FG (22 minutes)
Unsurprisingly, Larry Hughes was the shitass of the game. After all, he is probably the shitass of the second half of this decade. Hughes made the most of his minutes off the bench, committing half of the Knicks' turnovers and going 20% from the field. We may not have won this game if not for him. Larry Hughes, thank you for taking so many bad shots. Marcus Camby had 9 rebounds, but was scoreless on 6 shot attempts. He would have taken this award had we lost.
Other Noteworthy Performances
Rasual Butler: 22 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists (29 minutes)
Eric Gordon: 21 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds (33 minutes)
Chris Kaman: 12 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, 5-7 FG (34 minutes)
Al Thornton: 11 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists (35 minutes)
Danilo Gallinari: 25 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 10-25 FG (30 minutes)
Toney Douglas: 21 points, 5 assists (28 minutes)
Al Harrington: 15 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks (33 minutes)
Chris Duhon: 11 points, 8 assists, 4-14 FG (30 minutes)

Month In Review: November 2009
December 1, 2009 - November has come and gone, and thanks to the 29 game season, the Clippers have played just three games. Because of this, I shall be only doing a small recap for the month, showing standings and player averages. More in-depth recaps will happen after each trimester of the season. Right now our Clippers are in 11th place in the Western Conference, but are only a half game out of a playoff spot. Due to a hot shooting streak, our sixth man Rasual Butler amazingly leads the league in PER by a wide margin.
Baron Davis was diagnosed to with knee tendinitis. He will play and start in tonight's game against the Pacers, but will be limited. Davis leads the team in scoring, assists and steals. This recap is nothing special, but hopefully it serves its purpose.
