Of course, I realize now that new SpeechIDs for existing players will mean no Marv and Steve speech. It doesn't bother me at all, as I simply play without commentary ("number 1, passes it to number 2, gets it to number 3, he shoots, number 3 scores" is as boring as it gets), but many people play with them, so I don't know what to do.

Ah...well if there's no suitable workaround for that, probably best we don't go that way.

DeRozan and Budinger won't be featured because I wasn't able to create decent SpeechIDs for them. So they're out.

Regarding Speech Files, I have one rule, and one rule only: The SpeechIDs I create must be fairly good, not a Frankenstein-like creation that sound awfully choppy and robotic. That's why I don't take request: You can offer suggestions, and I'll try to do my best, but I won't guarantee success. I've tried with Budinger and I've tried with DeRozan - I just couldn't get anything halfway decent.

NEWS - BIGGEST DRAWBACK REGARDING THE PROJECT:

I've compiled all my Speech Files and added them to the game. They work great.

Andrew, I've followed the NBA Live 07 and 08 SpeechIDs when available. For newer players, I just followed the PlayedID of your latest NBA Live PC.

And that's because I couldn't match the SpeechIDs that are indicated in your rosters: Some players with last names that are included in Marv and Steve's database (Rose, Brown, Evans, etc.), are given a 5XXX SpeechID. Elton Brown and Derrick Brown, for instance, have the same SpeechID in your rosters, so I decided to change the system. So I think it would be best if, for the 3.3 release, you facilitate me the Players.dbf file, I change the SpeechIDs myself, and send it back to you.

And this gives me the opportunity to talk about the biggest drawback I've encountered regarding this project: When adding an arena SpeechID, you lose Marv and Steve's speech. Derrick Rose is no longer "Rose", Tyreke Evans is no longer "Evans", etc, etc, etc. They are "Number x". And we can't avoid it unless we add new SpeechIDs for Marv and Steve, which is impossible. Because I've tried creating an arena Rose SpeechID with a totally different number, and also creating an arena Rose SpeechID with that 5XXX combination. The result was identical: Bye bye play-by-play commentary references.

Feel free to change those IDs, they're leftover from the 08 rosters which make use of a bigger bank of generic surnames. Probably best we use their PLAYERIDs anyway, rather than the 5XXX IDs.

The Speech Files VIII is available, featuring 20 coaches from the last 5 seasons (includes Del Negro, Scott Brooks, Mike Brown, Lionel Hollins and Jeff Bower, among others).

If you check my previous post, the one that you quoted, I actually mentioned Jeff Bower as one of the coach additions. On the other hand, Spoelstra is not included.

These Speech Files are NBA Live 06 only. You cannot create Speech Files for Live 2005.

Mensah-Bonsu in particular was included in NBA Live 08. So I just exported him from there.

In general, Packs I to III contain players from Live 07 and 08 speech databases. Since IV, they are entirely my creations. This has a few exceptions here and there, but as a general rule, it applies.

For example, many of the really excited speeches from I to III were added by me. Also, if my version was, in my opinion, better (especially when I have first and last names available in the database - eg. Aaron Gray), I kept it, as Al Murdoch changed a little bit his voice and his style throughout the years (and I tend to prefer his early work, from 97 to 2003 or 2004). It's a slight difference, but noticeable when working with sound editors.

Then, my later packs contain a couple of Live players (Roy Hibbert, for whatever reason, has a SpeechID in Live 08). Some of them are very tricky, like Mbah a Moute, who contains segments from 3 or 4 different players, and I've tried so many times to get it right that I forget the source. Krystkowiak, for instance, comes from Larry (Bird, Costello, I don't remember), Doug Christie ("Kryst"), Damir Markota ("ko"), and Wally Szczerbiak ("wiak"). It sounds like "biak" rather than "wiak", but in-game, it works nice.

Sometimes it's difficult to come up with something decent, but I try my best. Besides, intonation is fundamental. So, first names can only be covered by first names, and last names by last names, because of how Murdoch gives a rising intonation after first names. Moreover, stress is also decisive, as it influences in how a given work is pronounced. For example, "Marcus" and "Martell" contain the same first syllable, but the stress varies, so it's not the same. If you want to create "Marty", Marcus is your choice. On the other hand, if you want to create "Marquis", Martell works best.

This is a small explanation regarding the speech creating process. Of course, there are other factors involved (like the different tones used in the really excited lines, which on occasions don't allow to mesh them together, unless they sound terribly awful -a syllable very low-pitched followed by a high-pitched syllable, for example; or sometimes the syllables cannot get together because you are forcing them to, generating some clipping or a distortion). But I think you get the point without me getting too technical.

The Speech Files IX is ready, featuring the 47 International Stars from NBA Live 08. These players are from Argentina, China, France, Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain; and they have never played in the NBA. But some of them are quality players that have shown their value in European competitions, like Prigioni, Femerling, Marconato, Diamantidis, Papaloukas, Basile or Florent Pietrus.
