    Thierry's Blog: Trade Possibilities
    WashingtonWizards.com | October 20th, 2009

Quick and special update for you Wizards fans. I'm aboard the plane right now, flying to Philadelphia for the game against the Sixers, with my notebook and my Wi-Fi connection... I thought, "why not post the possible players we could acquire?" Some names in the list are what I call "a dream". Players like LeBron, KG or Wade, would be impossible to acquire without sending Gilbert, Caron or Antawn in exchange. List made by myself and forwarded to the manager Ernie Grunfeld. Between parenthesis, the perimeter and post defense of each player. Please, please, post any suggestions!

You could bring Bowen back from retirement. From the post defenders I think Thomas is quite attractive with his athleticism.

I'd agree cut the previews way back or maybe cut them completely. Definitely keep the starting lineup gif's, even if they are shown before the game recap. The starting lineups are great (Y) They let everybody know whose starting on what team & their averages. It also looks cool (Y)

Haven't checked in before now as I don't like wasting my time on dynasties/associations that start & end quickly. I usually wait a few pages before I check in

Young steps up, Wizards hammer Sixers
(PLAYED GAME)
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Image Watch Highlights

The Washington Wizards are heating up and Gilbert Arenas and Co. seem poised to make their move. Arenas scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half and Nick Young showed signs of brilliance in Washington's 121-104 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday night. In his first game as a starter this preseason, Young had 26 points on 10-for-11 shooting in 35 minutes. Antawn Jamison scored 18 for the Wizards, now posting a 5-2 record. "I feel a lot better, more comfortable,'' Young said. "But the biggest thing to me was getting a win. The more I'm out there the more loose it gets and the more comfortable I get, just need to chip off the rust a little bit.''

Elton Brand had 23 points and 10 rebounds and Andre Iguodala added 18 points for the Sixers, showing a new-look, reminder of the 80's. Philly shot 44 percent from the field and Washington a 56 percent, despite the struggles of Caron Butler, who had a preseason-low 13 points, who shot 6-of-16. Despite Butler's difficulties, the Wizards were able to carry an 11-point lead to the fourth quarter. Louis Williams's two free throws pulled the 76ers within four points early in the fourth, but Arenas had two three-point plays and the Wizards ripped off a 9-0 run late to put the game away. Philadelphia is now 2-5 in the preseason; coach Eddie Jordan has taken a toll on the team's performance. "We just have got to get better defensively,'' said Jordan.

But it was still an important victory for the Wizards. "The biggest thing is we won on the road,'' said Young. Wizards assistant coach Thierry Tirieux said in press conference that "everyone that is given a chance so far has taken his game up a level: Javaris (Crittenton), now Nick. I love it." Sixers center Marreese Speights said that "Tonight, the way he (Nick Young) was going, we probably could have put 10 people on the court and probably wouldn't have been able to stop him.'' Speights posted 8 points and six rebounds starting in place of Samuel Dalembert. Wizards' Young said that "I gotta thank coaches Flip and Thierry for this oportunity. I came in early and I was very focused. My teammates thought something was wrong with me because I wasn't talking on the court.''

Yep, Bruce Bowen is a good choice... don't know yet.

Then I would have like 6 shooting guards (I know Bowen is not)... Foye, Miller, Crittenton, Stevenson, Young... Stevenson will be traded sooner or later. Don't like Camby very much, just wrote him down because he's got good defense, might get Wallace.

Great to have another follower checking in, X. Thanks. :D I already cut the recaps a little, as you can see in this last one. I really like to write man, don't blame :P Starting lineups gif's will stay forever, they really look cool, eh?

Note: Scraped the betting game. Might resume it later... only 2 people betting this last one...

Damn. Young could not miss a shot. Really nice, since I like his aggressiveness on offense. In real life I think he could be a headcase or at least has to improve on defense way much in order to become a more than solid player. Cool recap. Keep it up! (Y)

Wizards wrap preseason at Chicago
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Image Watch Highlights

Faced with another possible rebuilding situation with a franchise that's had a history loaded with possible rebuilding situations, the Wiz had to make a decision. Instead of blowing the core up, they augmented it and are hoping for the best. And I don't think they could have done it any other way. No, this isn't a championship team. On paper and in a best case scenario, Washington is still a full step behind Orlando, Boston and Cleveland. And that's with Gilbert Arenas, who has played just 15 games in two years with Washington, back at full strength. The team tried real, real hard — it's paying the luxury tax and it's obviously hoping to win now — and yet the ceiling doesn't really allow for Finals potential.

In comes Flip Saunders, a guy who's done wonders in the past offensively with teams and a guy who can work a sound zone defense when the talent is willing; Flip can really coach. His offense doesn't get to the line much, but he could have the Wizards way, way up there in terms of offensive efficiency in 2009-10, even if they replace Jamison with an offensive zero in Fabricio Oberto to start the season. The defense will be a problem. There's no getting around that, no matter how well the zone collapses. Out goes some dead weight, alongside 2009's lottery selection, and in comes Randy Foye and Mike Miller. Perimeter depth that will help Washington push 105 points most nights. And returning for one more go-round is the team's core of young helpers. JaVale McGee and Andray Blatche provide solid production for their respective ages; Dominic McGuire and Nick Young: young, cheap help.

The core is the key, obviously. Arenas has to be at full strength for this team to succeed. He has to return to drawing fouls, he has to shoot his team into games and he has to be able to stay on the court for significant stretches. Yes, Foye and Miller can help in that backcourt, but Arenas has to be the man here. And Caron Butler, in his prime... don't worry. He'll be fine and more effective with all the help around him. Even with all the potential peril, the Wiz can safely assume playoffs; they might have 50 wins in them if their health returns and everything clicks, and with nearly $24 million in expiring contracts to trade with (Miller, Mike James, Brendan Haywood and Oberto), the team might not be finished with the tinkering.

Image

At Chicago, young Bulls teams in 2003-04 (making the postseason) and 2006-07 (making the Finals) were expected to take a leap, and both squads failed miserably. And you can't quite blame a lack of new blood for such failings, because those squads introduced (relative, in the case of the former) firebrands such as Kirk Hinrich and Joakim Noah to that year's roster. Either way, heading into this season, we can't get too dour with the Bulls chances based on previous incarnations that have failed to live up to expectations. One more time, the team could fail miserably. Or it could threaten 50 wins. Could, honestly, do both. Not a cop out, but anyone telling you they know exactly where these Bulls are ending up is lying. The youngsters will get better. Rare is the season that sees youngsters fall off, save for (seriously) 2003-04 and 2006-07 in Chicago, but Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Tyrus Thomas and Luol Deng will improve, no doubt about it.

Losing Ben Gordon hurts, losing your leading scorer always will, but replacing his looks with more touches for Deng and John Salmons won't be too awful. Chicago will miss his spacing, but they didn't lose a 7-footer with skills. Noah's already been a beast during the preseason. Thomas, you can't help but get a better feeling about him this year than you have in years past, Brad Miller should be solid enough, and the team got a taste last May. Should have been in that second round. But there are so many things to juggle. So many things have to go right. The defense was king for years, and it fell off the face of the earth late last season despite the presence of so many (Noah and Hinrich and Thomas, especially) who were around when the team was lights-out defensively.

The offense is still way too dependent on a transparent attack that relies way too much on perimeter touch without much space to get a shot off. And that late-season regular-season run? Check the schedule. They took on the league's worst, and came out ahead. So, yeah. Half wins, half losses. Cheap wins, tough losses. W's they should have lost, L's they didn't earn. Exactly when you expect them to zig, they'll zag. Chicago fans should be used to it.

Made previews way shorter. Don't blame me, I'm starting to write and really liking it. :)

Wizards waive Vincent Grier; Bowen returns?
    WashingtonWizards.com | October 22nd, 2009

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Washington Wizards waived Vincent Grier on Thursday and the roster now stands at 14 as the team prepares to face the Chicago Bulls tomorrow.

Last week, Paul Davis suffered the same destiny as he couldn't hold to a roster spot. The Wizards have until Monday to submit their final roster to the league and earlier this week, coach Flip Saunders said the team will take a good look at a trade to upgrade the frontcourt, "in case there is a situation where we don't have Antawn (Jamison) at some point of the year."

In other news, now retired Bruce Bowen was spotted at the Wizards' win over the Philadelphia 76ers. He had summer workouts with Gilbert Arenas at Tim Grover's Attack Athletics gym in Chicago. "He talked about coming here. I have offers about coming back, but I think it's too soon. To come to DC to play with Gilbert, that would be great, but not now," Bowen said. "With a healthy team, we can really make a push and surprise a lot of people. Bruce would do a superb job," Arenas added.

Wizards on the rise; rout Bulls
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Image Watch Highlights

About an hour before the Wizards and Bulls tipped things off in Windy City, coach Thierry Tirieux sent out a word of warning from his blog: “If the Wiz beat the Bulls tonight,” he began, “then we will have to take them seriously.” Alright then: consider the country on red alert. How else to describe the current state of affairs after Washington's performance Friday night? Treating the United Center as if it were their own personal playground instead, the red-hot Wizards (6-2) ran the Bulls off the floor 116-99 in the preseason finale for both teams.

Mike Miller scored 21 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter and Gilbert Arenas had 20, 5 rebounds and 6 assists for Washington. Flip Saunders' squad used a nearly perfect second half to run away from its rival, outscoring Chicago 64-42 during that stretch to cruise to victory, with a total team effort which featured nine players scoring at least 8 points and all 12 players scoring and grabbing rebounds. “Gilbert's got that killer instinct for a scorer,” said DeShawn Stevenson, who added 15 points. “He's definitely going to be a cornerstone of this team for many years to come.” JaVale McGee left his best for last, with 8 points and 6 rebounds in 16 minutes, but had 5 personal fouls.

Wizards' Andray Blatche is taking his development in stride. He had 9 points in a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the floor, to go with 8 rebounds in only 11 minutes. “Andray was huge,” said Saunders. “Every year that I've improved, I was never expecting to improve that much. I still feel like I have a little more ways to go,” Blatche added. Caron Butler only had 3 points (but had 10 rebounds), totally restrained by Bulls' Kirk Hinrich, who had 12 points and 5 assists. Brad Miller scored 17 and 6 for Chicago, led by Tyrus Thomas: the power forward posted 20 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks in 9-of-23 from the floor but got ejected in the fourth quarter with 1:14 remaining. Luol Deng, who only scored 4 points, got injured in a collision with Antawn Jamison (11 points) in the second quarter and didn't return. On the other hand, Miller had a stellar defense over John Salmons, who only scored 1 point and also got ejected.

Even Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro said that “it was incredible... we didn't have an answer for them. I still feel dizzy.” Coach Tirieux then added in his blog at the end of the game: “it was the sort of stuff which spawns big dreams, a host of admirers. Small ball at its finest. A 5-man symphony. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better brand of basketball than what we employed tonight.” Something special is happening in DC. This young, athletic and talented team has taken to head coach Saunders’s system in a way which is forcing the league to sit up and start paying attention. This squad won’t lurk in the shadows much longer; not with this sort of pace, ball movement and teamwork, and certainly not with results like the one attained yesterday. The nation has taken notice and the word is starting to spread.

Good luck in your first game. Good win against the Bulls but for you its not "how to stop the Bulls, 76ers or Hawks?", its "how to stop Kobe, Melo, Pierce, Wade", which means that I think your offense is fine but you could have problems on D. Im glad youre finally starting the season.
