Pistons end Washington's unbeaten streak
(SIMULATED GAME)
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Image Watch Highlights

Once Ben Gordon's body felt better, his pinpoint shooting returned to form, and just in time for the Detroit Pistons. Gordon, who has been ailing with a stomach flu before the game, scored 20 of his 29 points in the second half and sparked Detroit's game-changing run in a 119-105 victory over the Washington Wizards, who have lost their first game of 4 this preseason. "I have finally been able to work out the last couple days. I missed some shots in the first half but I stayed hungry and made my first few shots after halftime,'' Gordon said. Former Chicago Bull helped the Pistons erase a 13-3 run by the Wizards in the first few minutes after the break, then hit a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to put John Kuester's team up by 10. Washington couldn't recover.

"Ben was cooking", said Richard Hamilton, who helped the Pistons with 18 points and 4 rebounds. The Pistons continue with their good form after a 110-106 win against Atlanta and a 101-97 triumph over Milwaukee. "Once I made a 3, they tried to jump out on me and I was able to put the ball on the floor and take it to the basket and get to the line. It was nice to really feel good out there again,'' said Gordon, who also had 6 assists. Antawn Jamison had a team-high 23 points and Gilbert Arenas flirted with a triple-double, with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 8 dimes, for the Wizards, outscored 92-70 entering the fourth quarter. "We played really hard and it was a hard-fought game but they made the big-time shots tonight,'' Jamison said.

Rodney Stuckey had 10 points and 7 assists in 4-of-11 shooting while penetrating at will in the second half. Javaris Crittenton couldn't stay with the shifty Pistons guard, who found open teammates. "I'm just having fun and my teammates are hitting shots and that's where the assists are from. I can't take all the credit. I'm definitely finding them, but they have to hit the shots,'' Stuckey said. Austin Daye scored 15 points and Tayshaun Prince and Jason Maxiell each had 11 for Detroit. "What we did in the first half was fire the ball up there and we never had any chance to defend the floor. Once we started moving the ball around, we started getting more confidence,'' Pistons coach Kuester said. 8 Pistons scored double figures, including center Ben Wallace (13 points), making his comeback to the team this season after stints with Chicago and Cleveland.

"We finally figured out their zone and started attacking with good angles and knew where we needed to drive and spot up,'' Gordon added. Before he had to leave the game with a right calf bruise, Will Bynum had 10 points and two assists. The Pistons made 52 percent of their shots while forcing the Wizards to veer from their inside-out strategy, with Flip Saunders' team making only 42 percent -- 9-of-21 from 3-point range but 20-of-22 from the charity stripe. "We did a decent job of not letting them get it inside, then they adjusted and started getting the ball into Maxiell and into cutters in the lane and that really hurt us. We were able to get out and run a little bit in the first half,'' Saunders said. Detroit dominated the first half, shooting 63 percent from field and outrebounding the Wizards 22-9. "Gordon had a great third quarter which really hurt us,'' Saunders added. "We ran out of people to throw in there. They deserved it, don't get me wrong; they played well. We just had guys that were exhausted.''

Caron Butler and Mike Miller scored 19 and 15 respectively for the Wizards while DeShawn Stevenson, in his first start, had 13 points. Fabricio Oberto, fresh from a 18-point production against Toronto, went scoreless. Scottish electronic musician, singer-songwriter and record producer Calvin Harris sat courtside with Washington fans, wearing a Gilbert Arenas jersey, and came out on the court and had a word with some Wizards and coach Saunders during halftime.

    Wizards waive Paul Davis
    WashingtonWizards.com | October 13th, 2009

WASHINGTON - The Washington Wizards have waived center Paul Davis, a move that trims their roster to the required 15 players.

The 6-foot-11 Davis was invited by Washington to the Wizards' training camp. Davis, 25 years old from Michigan State, has played 3 seasons in the NBA, all with the Los Angeles Clippers, increasing his point and rebound average in all of them: 1.6, 2.5 and 4.0 in points and 1.4, 2.1 and 2.5 in rebounds.

Davis has a major in Communications and attended Rochester High School in Rochester, Michigan. He was the Michigan State Champion in the NFL's Punt, Pass and Kick competition at age 10. In 2002, he was named the State of Michigan's Mr. Basketball, McDonald's All-American,Parade Magazine All-American, USA Today Michigan Player of the Year and Second Team All-American and Dream Team, All-Metro and All-North honoree by both The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press. In that year he was also selected to participate in the 2002 EA Sports Roundball Classic. As a senior, he averaged 29.7 points, 13.8 rebounds, 4.1 blocks and 3.8 assists.

Undefeated Cavaliers to host Wizards tonight
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Image Watch Highlights

Coach Eddie Jordan was let go just 11 games into his sixth season with the ball club after a 1-10 start to the season. The Wizards were hit hard by injuries and were missing their starting point guard, shooting guard, and center from the previous season in Gilbert Arenas, DeShawn Stevenson and Brendon Haywood respectively. The Washington Wizards finished dead last in the Eastern Conference with an abysmal record of 19-63 last season. They were the only team in the Eastern Conference that did not manage to win 30 games. Normally when a team is coming off of such a terrible season expectations are virtually nonexistent; however, that is not the case with the Washington Wizards. The Wizards spent basically all of last season without Arenas, as he missed the majority of the season for the second straight year with knee problems, but according to various reports, Agent Zero is fully healthy for the first time in years. When Arenas is at his best he is one of the most prolific scoring guards in the entire NBA. He may not be your prototypical point guard that looks to set up his teammates first and foremost, but you cannot deny how talented he is. He is a dynamic offensive player that can hurt you in a variety of ways. He has a very good jumper, albeit somewhat streaky. He is more than capable of creating his own shot off of the dribble and is good at getting to the free throw line.

Arenas is just an all around threat on the offensive end of the floor. Joining Arenas are his two old running mates, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. Last season these two were thrown into the role of franchise players and that simply does not suit their style of play. Both of them are fantastic players that have made multiple All-Star appearances in their careers, but they are better suited as second options. Having Arenas back in the lineup will allow them to become the excellent complimentary players that both of them are. This trio was one of the best in the NBA just a few seasons ago, but injuries have prevented them from playing any sort of extended minutes together since then. With Arenas back healthy, these three players look to remind everybody why they were so highly regarded as a trio. Another major player for the Wizards is returning from injury this upcoming season, and that is starting center Brendan Haywood.

The ‘08-09 Cleveland Cavaliers were fascinating in that they managed to be an elite team with extremely few moving parts-essentially, the team was LeBron James and four other role players, albeit very good ones; the only other playmakers on the team were Delonte West and Maurice Williams, and while they were heady players capable of getting penetration on an unsuspecting defense and making the correct pass as well as knocking down open shots, neither one was really comfortable making plays on their own with the defense keyed in on them-generally, the best offense you’d see in those situations were a 20-foot Mo jumper when the defense went under the screen. The Cavaliers faced a conundrum-when you have a player who can seemingly do anything on a basketball court, and well, is it a good idea to allow him to reach the limits of his capability for production or should you attempt to channel his production? The 08-09 Cavaliers went with the former option, and on an individual level the results were staggering.

LeBron was really, really good. This phenomena has been noted by a number of outlets. He’s reached the point where there’s nothing he could do apart from winning a championship to raise his status, so laying superlatives on him has become almost moot; if he averaged 40/15/15 on 70% shooting next year but failed to win a championship, would he really change anybody’s mind as to how great or not great of a player he is at this point? Second, the Cavaliers chose under GM Danny Ferry’s routine to find players perfectly suited to be effective playing around James. Shooters were brought in; the Cavaliers finished a close second in three-point shooting percentage last season. People who could make plays without needing the ball in their hands were brought in-there’s the previously mentioned West and Williams, as well as Zydrunas Ilgauskas, a former point guard in Lithuania before a massive growth spurt (seriously.)

The other tenet of the Cavaliers’ success was defense; since you don’t need the ball to play defense, it’s much easier to create a great defense out of role players than a great offense. Coach Mike Brown is a defensive coach at heart, and under his watch Williams went from liability to passable, West transformed into a true stopper, Ilgauskas went from glacial liability to steadfast protector of the rim (and against Dwight Howard, back to glacial liability), and LeBron became a defensive dynamo. Anderson Varejao was probably the night-in-night out key to the defense because of his ability to show and recover on the pick-and-roll, which was a key in Brown’s no-switching defensive system. And now we have even more additions: Shaquille O'Neal (if he stays healthy and produces at the level he did in Phoenix last season, he will easily be the best individual player LeBron has ever played with), Jamario Moon and Anthony Parker (solid spot-up shooters and good athletes who can defend and play without the ball in their hands, and their most glaring weakness is their inability to create their own shots, which is obviously not a problem with how LeBron-centric the Cavs’ offense is) and Leon Powe (nice forward who will surely repeat his performance in Boston).

Hanging over the season is this: if the Cavs win the championship this year, LeBron would have to be the first major sports superstar to leave a championship team for another franchise since Wayne Gretzky. However, if they don’t win, well that’s a different ballgame, and one the city of Cleveland really doesn’t want to see played. A lot of teams have said at the beginning of a season that their mentality for the upcoming season was “championship or bust.” I can’t remember a team where both scenarios seemed as real as they do for the 09-10 Cleveland Cavaliers.

James, Williams help Cavaliers hold off Wizards
(PLAYED GAME)
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Image Watch Highlights

Trying to beat the buzzer at the end of the third quarter, Daniel Gibson heaved a wild hook shot from the top of the key. The ball rattled around the rim and dropped in. It was that kind of a night for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Gibson had 10 points in 4-of-5 from the floor, LeBron James had 24 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists and the Cavs beat the Washington Wizards 112-102 on Wednesday night for their fourth straight win this preseason.

Maurice Williams had 18 points and 11 assists and Delonte West had 14 off the bench for the sharp-shooting Cavaliers, who shot 50 percent (46-of-91) and went 6-for-14 from 3-point range. "I never felt the game was close,'' West said. "We controlled the tempo all game.'' The scary part is they think they should've scored more - the accurate shooting masked 23 turnovers, also a season high, and the Wizards winning the rebounding battle 64-42. "I don't think we're quite where we should be,'' Williams added. "We've still got another notch to get to.'' Shaquille O'Neal posted 13 points for Cleveland, who improved to 4-0.

In place of Caron Butler, rested by coach Flip Saunders, Mike Miller scored 12 points to go with 13 rebounds. Antawn Jamison had 19, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Cleveland were able to win despite Gilbert Arenas, who had his first triple-double, with 28 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. "The first of many to come this season", Arenas said. "We just swarmed him and tried to make it difficult for him,'' said LeBron. "We did the best we could. We just tried to make him feel uncomfortable and we couldn't. We had to focus on containing the other players.''

The Cavaliers led 68-54 at halftime after shooting an astonishing 73 percent in the first half (27-of-37) - and only missing four shots inside the 3-point arc. They missed 5 of its first 11 shots in the third quarter and Washington chipped away at the lead, as Jamison sank a free throw and Brendan Haywood scored on a skyhook to pull the Wizards to 83-79. James drove for a layup at the other end just five seconds later to start a decisive 12-3 Cavs run, with James then adding a two-handed dunk to put his team up 95-82, entering the fourth quarter with a wild hook shot from the top of the key that rattled in to put Cleveland up 101-91. Already short-handed without Butler, the Wizards were further depleted when Miller and Blatche each picked up their fourth fouls of the game and went to the bench. Mike James had to play most of the fourth quarter. He had been relegated to the bench for this season, the fourth-string point guard behind Arenas, Randy Foye and Javaris Crittenton. He had only 5 rebounds.

The fans cheered when Arenas brought the ball up the court with his triple double already in the stats and they gasped when he drove the basket and took a hard foul from Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Arenas sank both free throws. "It's been great,'' Arenas said of the crowd's reaction. "They've been sticking behind me no matter what. Hopefully, this is a start for me to continue after my injury, trying to help this team win.'' Wizards assistant coach Thierry Tirieux said Butler will play in Washington's next game, at Atlanta on Monday. "He really wants to play, Flip wants him to play, I really want him to play. Today, he needed a rest,'' Tirieux said. Cavs coach Mike Brown gave forward Anderson Varejao rest.

THank you for Gilbert's TD, wish I had put more coin on it. Loving the screenies. This is making me want to get back into the Dynasty buz, and considering I just built a new PC (AMD Phenom Quad Core, Raedon 5850 1GB Gfx etc) I think the presentation could be quite fun.

Keep it up (Y) im following.

I had a hunch that Arenas will record a triple-double. Otherwise you wouldn't have posted the bet. :D

Tough loss though. Do you have 2K10 already and what are your impressions of it?

I make the bets before the game, didn't know Gilbert would play like that... I was scoring with him at will... his hands were like a magnet, all rebounds to him... all the teammates open...

I got 2k10 last week and have been playing My Player, it's taking all my free time...

Washington looks to bounce back against Hawks
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Image Watch Highlights

The Washington Wizards fans have to be excited about the upcoming season with the forgettable disaster of a season that has just passed. Who could have guessed that Agent Zero would have missed all but two games after only playing in thirteen games the year before and a coaching change in the middle of the season? Then to add insult to injury, Brendan Haywood only played in six games no pun intended. You can’t forget Caron Butler, who hasn’t played in 70 games since the 2005-06 season. The big two of Butler and Antawn Jamison couldn’t compensate for the losses of their fallen comrades. With Arenas and Haywood back in the mix and healthy and the additions of Randy Foye and Mike Miller, the Wizards will look to make a push for the playoffs. Last year was the first time since 2003-2004 they had missed the playoffs, ending their streak of four straight years of making the playoffs for them. Maybe the biggest addition this offseason was two new coaches by the names of Flip Saunders and Thierry Tirieux. Flip has 13 years of experience and a knack for winning; with 985 games coached and a record of 587 wins and 398 losses, he was one of the most experienced and capable coaches on the market this offseason. He should give this team guidance and identity while leading them to the playoffs. Tirieux is considered to be one of the most qualified basketball minds in Europe, having been a coach for three Euroleague teams, all making at least the quarter-finals of the Euroleague on the seasons he was coaching, and getting public acclaim from top NBA coaches such as Charlotte Bobcats' Larry Brown and Los Angeles Lakers' Phil Jackson.

The Wizards have not got much help over the past two years from Arenas, their highest paid player. He has played in a combined 15 games the past two years, starting only 10 of those 15 games. With career numbers of 22ppg and 5.5apg, that is a lot of production to replace; and as the Wizards fans saw last year, it was a mountain of a task that was not scalable. In order for the Wizards to make the playoffs and be successful, they need a healthy and motivated Agent Zero. With Arenas looking healthier than ever, Haywood back from injury and a few new additions in Foye and Miller, the Wizards look again to be playoff contenders in the weak Eastern Conference. The Wizards also have some interesting 2nd and 3rd year players that they will rely on with quality minutes in the hopes that they can produce. The upside for the Wizards is that JaVale McGee was thrust into a starting job because of injury and got priceless experience. He will become the backup to Haywood and should be more than serviceable as his backup with the ability to spot start for the veteran if needed. They also have Nick Young, who only started 2 games last year but put up great numbers in limited time. Dominic McGuire, going into his 3rd year in the NBA, had started 56 games and he will look to build on his strong performance from last year. As you can see, they have some promising young talent around their core of seasoned veterans.

When looking at the Wizards starting lineup there is one positional battle at SG. According to Tirieux in The Washington Times, Foye, Miller and holdover starting shooting guard DeShawn Stevenson are all in the mix for the Wizards’ starting shooting guard job. This seems like Foye’s job to lose with his superior skill set and upside compared to the other two. It is a good problem to have for the Wizards: Stevenson is more of a defensive specialist and can be a very streaky shooter; he can net you 25-30 points one game and the next four games not get 30 points all together. Miller is known as a scorer and defense is second on his mind when stepping on the floor. Foye is the better all around player and I would be completely surprised if he wasn’t on the floor come Tuesday, October 27 with the starters to begin the season. The only thing the team lost was size and they got that back when they added Fabricio Oberto; Ricky Rubio won’t even play in the NBA this season so for the “win now” mentality it was a great trade for the Wizards.

When you look at the Wizards, you see a team with players with the ability to finish number two in the Southeast Division behind the defending Eastern champs Orlando Magic. The problem is Arenas, Butler and company staying healthy long enough to put together that magical season. Only time will tell if this team can ever live up to all the hype that the personnel warrants. Coming for two straight losses, Saunders will rest Jamison and start Fabricio Oberto at power forward.

The Atlanta Hawks had a great regular season but fell short in last season’s playoffs. Though they came up short, the fans have to see the great strides by their team that made it to the second round. This team has a great core of players that they will bring back fully intact this year with their unquestioned leader Joe Johnson, who has done nothing but score 20+ ppg, 4+ rpg and 4+ apg in his first 4 years with the Hawks. He has been everything and more than every Hawks fan was hoping for when he first donned the Hawks uniform. At the end of game you want him to have the ball in his hands. The Hawks need him to take the next step in his development and average about 25ppg, 5rpg and 5apg. Can Johnson raise his game and take his team to the promised land? The rest of the starting line-up is back and ready to start the daunting journey that looks so promising for every NBA team at the beginning of the season. They have increased their win total by 4 or more the last 5 years and with the commitment of management and ownership to not only keep the team together but make it better, you can only say good things about this team.

The only thing keeping the Hawks out of the top three in the East is their youth and inexperience, because they have some great young talent and when the young guns on this team put it together watch out. One of the young guns is Josh Smith: he is one of the best young talents in the league at the ripe old age of 23 and he has yet to reach his full potential. He was the scapegoat two years ago in the playoffs when the pressure of his first postseason got to him. He did much better last year and helped to lead the Hawks to the second round of the playoffs before Cleveland eliminated them. He will be even better this year. The Hawks fans want more and Smith will give them more this year. Key additions of the team include Jamal Crawford (via trade from Golden State), drafted point guard Jeff Teague and free agents Joe Smith and Jason Collins. Out of all the new additions, Crawford was the best of the bunch: he will be the Hawks new sixth man. He can be instant offense for this team, a role that was filled by Flip Murray last year. Crawford is a streaky shooter but if he gets hot watch out because he can drop 25-30 points off the bench if he gets the minutes. The only problem is he may come back the next night and give you 5 points.

While looking over this roster top to bottom, it’s solid but not great, and that will keep them from achieving their number one goal of winning a championship. This team will make the playoffs and maybe win one round, which will most likely have them facing Cleveland, Orlando or Boston. All these teams are deeper and have better starting fives. Beating any of them in a 7 game series would be a monumental task that they were not even close to being up to last year with the 4 game sweep by Cleveland. Maybe Johnson puts up career numbers to hopefully fetch that big payday in the offseason; maybe Mike Bibby comes out and plays like he did when he played for Sacramento; maybe Smith puts it all together this year and becomes the super star he can be. If this all comes together, they just may make it past one of the big three in the second round, but they would more than likely meet another top 3 team in the conference semi-finals and they just don't have the talent to beat two of the top three teams in consecutive best of sevens. Undoubtedly, they will win close to 50 games this year and make the playoffs. The potential of this team is big and we could see them exceeding expectations; until they show on the court that they can hang with the big dogs, they can’t be mentioned with them. At .500 in this preseason, the Hawks will rest Marvin Williams and start Jamal Crawford.
